This is exactly the kind of test that hundreds ( if not thousands) of car mechanics wish they had the resources to do . Top marks for seeing this thru Great video
This is really spooky...I awoke this morning with a thought for the day..that being I wanted to know everything thing there is to know about a Disco 3 oil pump... astonishing, my life is complete now...what a great upload...cheers you are amazing 🤩
Christian is a genius. All that precision engineering just to run some tests. Great work.
I know a lot more work went into this wonderful video than is apparent. Christian's craftsmanship is most excellent! I did similar (but more crude) testing with the oil pump of a 1.6L VW Rabbit (Caddy) diesel, so I can certainly relate. I found that pumping the oil heats it significantly, and somewhere I may still have those records. A larger displacement pump may create more heat, but I doubt this will be a problem for you. I would like to reinforce the comment about replacing the pump when replacing the timing belt! My wife had a 1997 Toyota Camry, and I wasted a great deal of time looking for an oil leak - even changing the oil pan gasket - to no avail. The leak was from the intricately shaped oil pump cover o-ring, which had hardened and cracked. After that, I made it a practice to change the o-ring when changing the belt - BUT - as you know, not all o-rings are the same! At one point, I purchased a belt change kit that included the belt, the cam and crankshaft seals, the oil pump seal, and the oil pump o-ring. That o-ring in the kit was not thick enough, and I still had to buy one from Toyota! At one point, I also bought a camshaft seal that leaked, even though it was new. It is disappointing when a large job is finished and there is a problem because of new part quality. This can happen even when a lot of attention is focused on the details. Thank you for your wonderful video, Vera and Christian!
We can fully relate to you. When we changed the oilpump on my Disco 3, we still had a oil leak. We keep an close eye on it since the oil it looses is only minute and just collects on the underbody protection. But we will be replacing the oilpump and all belts and hopefully eliminate that leak soon. 👍🙋♀️Vera
Christian's workmanship is second to no none.
Always interesting, and the thoroughness that he applies to his analysis of
LR components, is amazing.
Vera's comments from behind the camera, while always being accurate, alway make me smile.
Thank you.
😅🤗🙋♀️ Vera
Besides the good information this video and others in this channel provide, what actually amuses me is the way Vera looks at him every single time in every single video. Definition of love.
The only thing I have to say it is "Thank you for the effort you put on this videos". You are very creative and at least I am grateful for all your efforts. I think most and maybe all, are grateful. Keep up the good work!
Good video as usual guys. What I did learn from this video is - without Vera, Christian would not know where anything is. 😜
Thank you for the content guys. Amazing attention to detail as always along with the odd chuckle. Keep up the good work .
Fully appreciate the effort and time that you went through to do this for us.
As always, an enthralling watch. factual , informative, and delivered in a charmingly harmonious environment. an abject lesson in how to educate and entertain , why was school never like this.
Lovely to watch the engineering. I am English and drive a 70 series Toyota, so I will never have this problem but I can still learn and enjoy.
I was already planning to replace my oil pump, I have about 290'000km so it will benefit from a new one.
You make my life complete, you always make great entertaining videos and bring a smile to my face knowing the world is a better place for all your efforts
Perfect timing with this video. My 2007 D3 is due it's timing belt and I know the pump was replaced with the upgraded FOMOCO one in the last change and so I was therefore considering whether I need to do the pump again. After seeing your tests I will do the pump again. Keep these videos coming as they are a real encouragement and source of great information and fun to watch.
I would be checking if the current build of the pump is still an OEM grade pump - it could be a stamped aftermarket part as time is moving on.
@@einfelder8262 it's a FoMoCo as I know the previous owner 👍
What an absolutely brilliant video. I can't believe the amount of engineering Christian does, to perfection, to demonstrate or test the functionality of a part. Vera's laugh whilst all the machining is going on is very contagious btw! Great episode, which I'm guessing took far far longer than the length of the video. Well done, again, you two, you really are a great couple. Take care.
Another quality educational video from the LR ninjas. Congratulations Christian - your work bench is now waterproof ...
My favourite German Engineer - Vera! You've trained Christian the apprentice well too Vera.
Another great video on the intricacy on the workings of the LR oil pumps.
You guys are absolutely amazing. My girlfriend and I are watching all your episodes every week, it is the highlight of the week. 🙂
🤗😃🙋♀️Vera
to increase the oil pressure, you need to change the oil nozzles! New ones will have a pressure of 1.4 bar at idle!
As ever, fun to watch. Very informative and its good that someone goes to the lengths you do to test and build rigs that actually make sense when being used!. Keep it up, always makes good informative viewing ;-)
Christian and Vera wonder’s never cease ))) wonderful video and presentation from you two and as always very entertaining love watching Christian his detailed explanation)))). 🇬🇧😃❤️😃
Great video as usual and well needed education on this topic!
The only thing I would have suggested had I been there would have been to adjust the precision flow valve such that 1 or 1.5 bar was maintained on all three pumps. You would then have demonstrated the difference in flow rate between the different displacements and levels of wear. Other than that, bravo!
It's another Totally Epic Late Late Show with Christian and Vera! ;) Thanks so much for the ongoing edutainment digging deeper and deeper into the finer points of this engine. You're both awesome :)
Another brilliant video, very informative. Thanks Christian and Vera
Excellent, flow rate & pressure measurement!! A must see for anyone running a JLR vehicle with this engine.
This is really super! Wow, what an effort and thoroughly entertaining! Thanks!
Now that you have your test rig, you should test liquid moly and also Lucas fully synthetic additive with fresh and worn out oil in the different pumps to see how much they help. You might need an oil heater (sump heater). Thank you for the video.
Brilliant footage! so glad my D3 got a new FoMoCo uprated pump 6 months ago along with all front and rear belts, tensioners etc!
Great stuff. The conclusions help Disco 3 owners with their maintenance and overall care of their engines.
Christian&Vera,Fantastic test!
Hvl.
Wow, absolutely amazing!!!
Congratulations to both of you! We will wait your next video and see step by step the oil pump replacement. It will be really interesting, to keep to cost low! Thank you in advance.
We posted this video already. Christian
Another amazing and very entertaining video, thank you both
I am impressed and amazed!
Well done both of you great video. I was fixing the gearbox on my lawn mower today and thought it’s Sunday so it’s LR Time. Definitely something to look forward to after chasing detent balls around the garage
😅👍 We had to do that this last fall and it was definitely more difficult than working on our Disco 3. 🙋♀️Vera
Each week you two impress me more.
Vocês 2 são sensacionais,,vídeos muito bons ,Deus vcs abençoe
😃👍 Thank you 🙋♀️Vera
Very well done guys, interesting conclusions and sound experimental method.
Well done both for such detail.”Especially love the precision flow control valve” I cannot though seem to find it in the LR parts catalogue 🤔👍👍
I hope you continue your videos, as I enjoy them every Sunday. I have joined on patreon to support the videos going forward 😎
Oh that is great, I hope I already contacted you, if not I will do today. The last couple of days we have been so busy unfortunately. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
Amazing restore.
Great video - thanks. Loved the comments (several times) - Christian: we have to keep the oil clean as it's going back in Vera's car - Vera: No it's not! - Please note that we are all on Vera's side here 😉 😘
😅👍And of course I got my way, he ordered 10 L of brand new oil for me. I just have to make sure that he does not put it into Fabians car next Saturday. 🙋♀️Vera
Thanks guys your both amazing
I looked through my You Tube this morning before I went out looking for a new LR time video, back home now and prayers answered 😁
Wow you really went the extra mile in this one 🙏
I love your content and your relaxed style. I have a disco 4 and my wife has a disco 3. Both have done more than 200,000 miles. It would probably be useful if I was a better mechanic. Thanks for your great videos guys. John
Doctor of Land Rover Discovery, I dub you two! I always enjoy your videos!
Another great video! Thank you.
I have a 2009-2010 RRS, 3L diesel- i must check the pump!👍🤣 Just love you guys! Fantastic video!
Fantastic and informative as ever.
🏴👍
Very good! I liked this episodevery much!
wonderful job
My 04/2008 build D3 had upgraded pump from the factory. Installing new pump now @ 315,000 klm.
Hi, as always a fantastic video , many thanks for such an extremely informative video,
Interesting video on the other Achilles heal of this engine, great team effort.
Great video Christian👍
Brilliant, my new favorite channel , that was a lot of work and dedication , thank you, ( and no, I don't think I'm up to owning a Disco 3 or 4 yet , I'm not brave or talented enough , you have my respect and admiration though ) another great video.
awesome awesome and totally cool. this video was like a very deep informative audiobook.
That was great. Thank's.
Too informative as always! Although I am not an LR owner, I do expect to watch your videos every week. Now, if you do have some information and advices for the rest of us diesel owners, that would be great to hear from you.
thank you for the intense video
Another fanscinating and very informative video - I very much enjoy so keep up the great work 10/10 :-)
Excellent video very interesting thank you.
Magnificent engineering
Brilliant! (watching this @ 1:00 am)
I changed my 08 pump with the upgraded FoMoCo pump at 195k km and stripped down the original one - had no visible wear after that km. At 340k now. I've never been happy with the time it takes the oil pressure to build up in these engines - a good few seconds if the car hasn't run for a while, but so far mine is still running very well.
We will change the oilpump now after 120000 km again just for the peace of mind.👍🙋♀️Vera
Sei un grande .
Christian you're a clever old stick thank you very much very useful information
I do love your work, travels and sense of humour. We are about to start our youtube channel and travel across Europe to Southern Turkey in our Series 3 109" that has been part of our family for 38 years. I was going to call her ancient but then realised what an inditement that would be on my wife! If we can document our travels half as well as you and Vera - I will be a happy chappy!
😅👍I am turning 50 next year and my kids are also starting to pay attention to what they call "old" 🙋♀️Vera
Good evening Vera & Christian. Fantastic video to start the new year 😀 I think 2022 is going to really good for LR Time and I’m in for the journey 😂 Take care cheers Stevie 🤩🏴
😃👍 We hope so too. 🙋♀️Vera
Thank you both, I have only just discovered your channel as I start on my fact finding journey into whether buying a discovery 3 or 4 is a good idea or not. I love the content you produce, amazing quality and detailed presented in a very through Germanic style ( which having grown up there I really appreciate and miss ) I am slowly catching up on your past videos and following your recommendations for other sources of information and am learning so much, the one thing I have come to realise so far is that to own and run a discovery it helps to have your own workshop 😂. Thank you again for your content and dedication.
Got that right 😅. No but seriously, if you want to buy a Land Rover, you got to be able to fix it yourself or have the money to have it maintained and fixed regularly. And get yourself a OBDii diagnostic tool and hook it up to your car during test drive. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
Buy a Toyota!! 😉
(And a hammer 😉)
I too am in the same boat as to buy a discovery or not..i have always managed to do the basic servicing and repairs along with my dads quidance on my cars and enjoyed it..but some of these problems leave a small amount of doubt in my mind! Never the less Christian and Vera's videos are fantastic 👌 thank-you both x
Buy the D3 over the D4 ;-)
Hi. Thank you very much for your hard work put on this channel. I have been watching the videos for last 3 years. Very informative and entertaining all the time. I am going to order timing belt of my disco 4 sdv6 engine with 180000km runtime. Seems like I should also change the oil pump
Do it as soon as you can 👍🏻
Yeah, we always change boths together, the oil pump and the rear fuelpump timing belt) at the same time. And we do that at about a 120000km running time. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
That’s crazy, I don’t know what to u guys
Thank u
Why ever lm looking at Disco oil pumps l really couldn’t tell ya, lv watched so many of Christian and Vera’s videos it’s getting like a soap opera fix now every Sunday, no matter what the subject. I feel like an overstayed guest in the house, with glimpse of outside, the drive, road gates and garden, let alone the garage. Keep up the good work you guys, lm missing my old LR already, l can see myself stupidly buying another LR money pit, and selling the X5, as l do miss the comfort and drive ability but l admit not the garage bills.
😅👍I am sure one day you will 💪🙋♀️Vera
Great video, i need a Christian! My dash has engine light, suspension light and parkbrake fault. Joys of LR ownership
😅👍🙋♀️Vera
excelent as always
See you next sunday, thank you 💯
Respect. You just got a new subscriber
I did the first motor belt change on my Discovery 3 m.y. 2007 at 170.000 km, 7 years ago, but at that time I didn’t know about the oil pump issue; now I’ve found a new & upgraded oil pump here in Italy for less than 100€…
I’ve also scheduled a new motor belt change at 340.000 km thanks to your video.
Now 310.000 Km on the clock, hope it will last.
That is quite a number 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
thank you
Another great video guy's my d3 is booked
In for new belts and pump but not till February, it's done 130 thousand miles and had timing belt done once before at 77 thousand. Going to have nightmares for the next month now🤣🤣
😅👍I know how you feel. 🙋♀️Vera
My god this guy is intelligent love you guys from Sydney
Hi, your Wurth you weight in gold , Your attention to detail is amazing and the time you put in to prove a point . Good old school engineering . Noah would be proud and he saved all the animals , whilst you both try to save the L R Discovery . Great work you two .🤔 🙃 😉
Ahhh Nice maybe the next Time i change my leaking Front Crankshaftseal i change the Pump, good Work you both!
We'll be doing that next on my Disco 3. 👍🙋♀️Vera
I discovered you not long ago and I love your videos!! It's a shame that you don't speak French, because yes I'm French 😃 .. But I take great pleasure in watching you !
We, that workbench is never going to rust. 😊
Another in depth video. You two may need to take a break and just do a 3d print project. Thanks again.
Dear LR Time,
I am writing to the Board of Land Rover and recommend that they establish ato be located in your garage in Germany. Enormous amounts of funding will of course be allocated to you, to be spent at your discretion. Christion/Vera, you are absolute CHAMPIONS. Thank you for your dedication. I am of course subscribed.
Thanks. 🔩🔧🪛 Christian
Love to watch your video's and love the clear explanation of the techniek and the weaknesses of the Disco. Question: can you explain me the difference between the SDV6 and the TDV6 besides the Horsepowers..?
There is no difference. The SDV6 is mapped differently. I found this in the workshop manual. Christian
Another fantastic tutorial. I just had the 7 year service (front and rear belts changed) on my 2014 D4 with the 3 litre diesel engine it was at 85,000km and I did not ask about changing the oil pump. Wish you had published this a month earlier. Great videos and I am now watching out for every new instalment. I wonder if you will be doing any videos on the ZF 6 speed transmission? Like how long between servicing under various conditions. Something for the future perhaps when the opportunity arises.
The ZF needs a flush at 80t km according to ZF for example on a BMW. There will be a Robbie’s guide video on our HP8 down the road. Our LR3 is a manual. Christian
Christian having far to much fun, well done :)
German precision with the perfect English terminology. I'm always impressed! Could I say that, speaking so precisely, you speak German English :) Keep it up! You two are lovely, thanks!
Brilliant!!
Excelent vídeo....🤙🤙🤙💯💯💯as always....👌
I have to agree, a great video with fascinating information guys, love your content. I did notice that your filter looks different to my SDV6 3.0. I don't recall seeing that little plug for the check valve but next oil change I'll have to keep an eye out for it.
Any more tests?
How about the crank shaft surface finish.... as I noticed on my broken one it had a lot of chatter marks from machining all over it which I believe can cause stress points. Thanks 🇦🇺👍
Indeed, the 3L does not have the plug on the filter. I will also check next time how the drain function works. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian if its the same as on my 13my XJ, there is a little vitron (I think) plug that sits under a circular concave spring which sits over the outlet tower. As the filter housing is torqued down the spring holds the plug in the drain passage way. This is why it's prob important to torque down correctly. Six turns of the filter cap removes the pressure & allows the oil to drain back. Should the plug perish the oil will drain away on each engine stop & bang eventually. I think its a bit crap & cannot find a replacement part.
Bonkers... and brilliant😀
In my MY2008.5 there was also the old housing used. Replaced it when the timing belt change was due, because I read too many complaints of the housing will break after service. A few hundred Euros is still less than a broken engine.
That is always the smart way to go. We will be replacing the oilpump on my Disco 3 now for the second time since it already has 150000km on it again. 👍🙋♀️Vera
I wish you were my local mechanic. My D3 is about to have an engine rebuild and the issue i have now is that the company wont be as thorough as you. I have already asked to many questions based on watching you guys. You guys are great please dont stop. OH and can we have an update on Fabians engine. 🙏 how is it running?.
He put on 2000 km by now, and we‘ll see him on Saturday. Then we‘ll do an oilchange and hopefully find no metalchips 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
Brilliant video as always. I was left with one question. As Vera’s pump did so well would you expect a new LR genuine pump to be better than the FAI one Fabian bought or is the FAI one the genuine part? Conclusion seemed to be aftermarket part quality not quite as good but good enough. Thanks for staying up late to both of you…and getting to it early too. Great test.
Probably the aftermarket part is 25% of the genuine part, making it tough to justify genuine. It's also highly likely the "genuine pump" made in 2021 could be sourced from the aftermarket by Ford/Land Rover and be inferior to the 2006 as well (apart from the obvious bracket update).
Ihr seid super!!! lg
