    My wife nagged me the other day for watching a violent movie. So I tell her, should we sit down and read the Bible as a family instead? She said ...yes!
    So I start reading the story of gang rape and mutilation of bodies.

      Definitely all the Abrahamic religions do that, Judaeism, Islam and Christianity. Wicca pretty much promotes female empowerment, don't know about Buddism, Hinduism or other eastern belief systems. In some Native American tribes the women owned everything and the men were the spiritual leaders. It's all made up stuff.

    Though, when you put aside the view that the Torah is the supposed word of God, and instead look at it as a historic document that records an ancient culture, the Book of Judges is likely a compilation of different myths and legends of the people in that area. Hence you get stories about folk heroes like Samson, Deborah and Gideon.

    What shocks me today is the literal reading of these bible stories. We really butcher these stories when we tosh them into modern settings and impose the modern categories of 'history' and '21. century moralism' down upon them. Personally I think there's great value to be found in the writings of the ancients - what they are doing with these texts are unbelievable clever but also very demanding of us to dig into because of the distance between us on all fronts. Step one is to find out what genre they are writing in.

    • @emmapeel8163
      @emmapeel8163 3 года назад +2

      yeah .. the literal interpretation lacks any critical thinking .. even though Yeshua states He's telling parables for the dumb.
      there's literal, poetic, parables, family history, etc .. that make up the Bible.

    My understanding of the Lot story was that it was a sin of inhospitality - "to know them" didn't mean sex (and I don't know Hebrew), but Lot was kinda messed up and sent his daughters instead.

    • @exjehovahswitness
      @exjehovahswitness  3 года назад +4

      if to know them did not mean sex than why did the concubine get rapped? in the lot story it was the same, to know them meant to get rapped 100% and no one denies that.
      You are correct that the "lesson" that most modern christians take from this is hospitality but my objection is, why use this story to teach that?

    If that guy who sent body parts of his woman to the 13 tribes of Israel isn't here. 😁 Or the prophet who got torn by a lion for stopping by to eat at the home of another prophet; same prophet who later came to bury his remains, but God didn't punish him for misleading the other one. What was his crime again? Oh yeah he accepted hospitality from a fellow prophet of the same God.

    I think my first clue that the old testament god was evil was when I actually thought about the personal implications of the Tenth Plague. It's particularly key because its a cornerstone of the bible, the tenth plague started the passover, which was later turned into the memorial. But they never talk about how god slaugtered thousands of innocent children at their memorials do they?
