I took a microswitch apart for a VW Beetle actuator, the spring inside and all the metal just fell to bits. :'( I bought another second hand actuator and it also had a duff microswitch. I might have a pop at fixing this one. Did you just use electronics cleaner like he did in the vid and is it all good now?

Thank you for time and commitment you have in contributing to the greater good.
Tried the things you suggested above but was still operating intermittently.
The solution in my case was to pry the motor retaining tabs apart (as there was carbon staining apparent through the translucent plastic end plate) blow out the deposit, gently clean up the tiny armature with a bit of fine emery paper, scrape the insulator with a fine blade, I only had brake cleaner available, so splashed a bit of that on, dried off with an airline and reassembled.
    Now it functions perfectly.

He knows what he's talking about. However, it is not necessary to remove all these parts to get that troublesome switch out. Just clip the wires and replace it without opening that delicate cover and separating all the mechanicals.

Yep just remove the retaining clip if that microswitch (door open/closed sensor) is the problem.

Your videos are great! Very informative, I've been wanting to do this repair for a long time on my MK4 Jetta but was a little wary, but watching you preform the repair has given me a better sense of what I need to take on the project. My only concern is that where the lock cylinder meets the module is broken as well as there is no resistance when I turn my key.

We have 2008 Tiguan, already changed the door lock module couple years
ago, but here comes the problem again, that's how I came here. We've
spent almost all our vacation in Italy searching for the VW services so
we could lock our car because the lock broke at the beggining of the
journey and the front door couldn't be locked automatically nor manually!!! And it is not the only lock problem that we've had. I think
VW's have some s*itty door lock systems. Thanks for the video BMAC.

Yes and no. I bought my wife a cheap Honda Logo and its of so poor quality everywhere, that we're mentally prepared to "forgive" the flimsy design and always buy a new replacement, whereas the VW is expected to never fail AND be repairable without any doubt. Why? If spares (OEM, not Chinese knockoffs) cost about the same.

Thanks mate. I removed the lock with a microswitch for the Škoda Octavia A5. It's a different lock, but it's the same micro switch. It does not have to open a lock like in your video, because it's outside the lock. I did not have such an electric cleaner, but I cleaned the contacts with fine sandpaper. Now the micro switch works normally.

WOW, this was extremely helpful in getting my driver door fixed. The way you walked through and explained every single part step-by-step could not have been done any better, and thank you for using an HD camera to film this so we can see the small parts, especially when it came to re-seating the T-bit back in to the black clip. Definitely one of the best walkthroughs I've seen on here.
My driver door doesn't recognize when it's open whatsoever and the old WD-40 trick didn't help at all, so my next step is taking it out and doing exactly this. Do you think it'd be best to re-solder all the contact points while it's open too, or is that not what causes the problem with the door not recognized as being open? My alarm has never gone off on me and and it locks and unlocks as well as arms the alarm using the key with no problems, but if I don't have to spend all that time and money on buying a solder gun for something that isn't the problem then would be a huge saver. Thanks again, keep up the great work!

Thank you, 1958, for the awesome video and very well detailed description on RENNLIST. I'm a visual guy, so I'd like to ask for a link to the video where you show how to remove the panel. You mentioned some wires get pulled, others you work around. Need to drill or grind rivets, then sheetmetal screws to keep things together. I'm confused. Mostly afraid to do it incorrectly and end up with a door with no panel. I know his is an old post but I'm hoping you have a link to a video for this... thanks, you rock. V.

Brilliant video. I've got this module on both my own 3-door VW Golf (2003) and my mother's 3-door VW Polo (2007) - on both passenger doors. The passenger sides puddle light doesn't come on, central locking affected on passenger doors, and a diagnostic scan comes back with an issue pointing to door module. It's a great video, and so is your other one - about actually accessing the module. I might give it a try. Thanks so much - you're the best.

I i ow this is old, but if you see this - thank you. I didn't need to fix the door sensor, but I've been trying ti figure out a way to install a cheap relay-based remote locking kit in the VWs, becsuse my lock cylinder is busted. Installing such a kit is a proper PITA on these VWs because at least on the Passat B5, the driver door key and lock cylinder doesn't actually actuate the door lock in any mechanical way; it only rotates that plastic cam, which push on those two microswitches to trigger the door lock actuator. And if you can't make it do that, you're kinda screwed because the door locks circuit on these cars actually operate over can-bus. The only circuit in the car that does.
Thanks to your video, I now see how I can hook this up: drill a small hole, hook the remote kit relay outputs to the pads on those microswitches.

sweet dude I will give this a try. I noticed a small piece of white plastic fly off when you opened the parts, what was that? did you break something? You also mentioned a rubber seal that was broken or cracked. You didn't mention replacing it. I think what happens is that people forget to close their windows and water gets inside the door and allows dirt to get in there like your video. I think that's what happened to mine.

  • @sjkellogg
    @sjkellogg 10 лет назад +4

Thanks a lot for the video, helped a lot! (1999 Passat 1.8t)
The problem I found with one of my modules was neither the switches nor the solder connections, but the little motor was having trouble. I tested it with a 9-volt battery and found it would operate intermittently and would work once I gave it a nudge. I sprayed it with some all-purpose lubricant (need to buy some of your electronics cleaner, probably) and it seems to work much better.
The problem I had was that I'd hear the whir and maybe see the lock move a little, but not make it. Sometimes helped by alternating lock & unlock until it would engage.
Next door to do is driver's-side rear, which has some of the symptoms you mention... central unit never recognized that it is opened and lock actuator doesn't work.

I've got a Mk1 Octavia and it wouldn't sense if the drivers door was open, so no alarm sounded if you left the lights on when you opened the drivers door with the ignition key removed. Thanks, this is an excellent video. I recently had my door module replaced because the alarm would go off at random, the dome light didn't work, the indicator signal for headlights left on didn't work, and the doors would lock when they shouldn't. Everything is now working fine, except the alarm has still randomly going off. Is there possibly a reset or something for the alarm that should have been completed? It was an expensive repair, and I'm at a loss. Appreciate any suggestion (s).

Nice video. What would your think the issue is when the door won't lock or unlock (electrically). I have to use the 'mechanical' key lock on the drivers side and then have to reach across the seat to unlock the passenger side with the handle. My passenger side door stopped first and then months later the driver's side also stopped 'electrically' locking/unlocking. I was going to purchase an entire module, but after watching your video very much feel I could repair them instead. I thought it might be either a solenoid or motor (not knowing how it really functions). Would be very interested to find any suggestions for repairing my issue. Thanks!

Thanks for this video, it was seriously helpful.
Its worth noting that my Australian delivered Bora 4Motion V6 was slightly different than in the video.
The spring catch that you showed is different but not likely to cause a problem. The big difference is that the microswitch is permanently mounted. The silver housing to keep it in doesn't exist and the 2 locator pins at the bottom are welded in, so not made to pull it out. I broke the welds and super glued it back in. It works for the moment but if it goes again I'll buy a replacement. What "went" on mine is that the welds had probably stretched and the 'button' was sitting above the part it is pushed in by. Hard to explain. Switch wasnt being switched.
I'm not sure if its worth doing the other doors as they've all gone. Might just buy replacements as I cant see my "Fix" lasting too long.

I had the little plastic pin that holds the spring to the housing break off it appears, when I took the switch apart the contactor and spring were just floating around. Don't have time to order a new microswitch and I'm not doing this twice! :D Thanks for great video to confirm what my problem was!

The micro switch you dismantled and cleaned.....would that prevent the doors from locking? My '09 TDI locks wont light up the actual lock rocker switch on each door. At least 2 wont anyway...and they dont lock. I also dont get the confirmation horn "beep" when I clock it. Exterior lights do flash though. Love the videos! Excellent job!!

    • @my99ferrari
      @my99ferrari 10 лет назад

Hey Joey, I know that if the doors are 'seen' as open by the security system, it will not beep, just the lights will flash.. I found that my B5.5 wagon will do that if there is a door that isn't fully closed or the hatch or hood open.. once it's closed, it's sound the horn and flash again..
It sounds like your issue is either with the motors that drive the mechanism, or the micro-switch(es) that sense whether the module is in locked or unlocked status.. if you are able to open to the doors after locking them with the fob, my mechanical inclination says that it would either be the lock motor not turning (due to dirt or a lack of electricity) or a mechanical issue such as a component being broken..
If the door locks, but still doesn't sound the horn, I'd check to see if you have interior lights on, if so, it's the micro-switch cleaned in the video that would be the issue.. if the doors are sensed as closed, then it'd have to be one of the two micro-switches that sense if the module is in a locked or unlocked state.. (most likely the one that is activated when the module becomes "locked")
Getting dirt or foreign objects in that sealed electrical area seems very unlikely though.. I'd bet money that it's mechanical.. all those plastic gears and parts are very easy to break if forced.. I found that out the hard way after playing that 'lock, unlock' game with someone in my 98 Volvo and they pulled the handle as the module was locking and broke it and I didn't know until someone opened my passenger door (that stopped locking electrically) and stole everything in my car.. damn.. lol
Anyway, I hope that helps and solves your troubleshooting issue!

The actuator on my golf 2008 has a problem that the rear left door intermittently won’t unlock. When you press the button the lock makes a clunk - clunk lock/unlock sound. Sometimes it unlocks but not always. Any idea which micro switch to look at? At AUD 350 to replace the actuator I would rather just fix the micro switch. Hope the house renovation is going well. Thanks, great video

Hey again, thanks to your videos, not so long ago i repaired my vw bora driver side door switch, didn't light up the door light, the roof light, and i didn't knew that it had an alarm when you leave the lights on and pull the key out. :-)) Removed the door panel, removed the lock module and tried to fix it as the video showed. I couldn't split it in 2 to get the microswitch out, but i washed it with WD-40 how i could, and it worked exelent till a few weeks ago. now the lights go on when i open the door, the alarm beeps when i leave the lights, but when i want to close all the doors from inside with the remote, or the close button on the panel the driver side lock rod keeps popping out. is that the switch, or the weldings in the electrical side?

Hi, i have an other question. Did you have ever measured the resistance
of the Microswitch inside of the lockmodule? E.g. from the switch which
    is sensing the locked/unlocked position?
In my rear left doorlock i can only measure 60mega ohm or infinit. And for the SAFE/UNSAFE it is the same . Also the same resistances.

Hi. Great video. I have a 2006 passat and both drivers side doors won't open from the outside when I unlock them using the fob. I lower the windows and reach in to open them. Once opened they function fine until I lock, unlock them again and try opening from the outside again. Will this fix work for my passat? I hear the inner door card is a pig to remove. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Figers crossed this should work for your car. you will have to check all of the sensors and solder points as well.

Great video! Well done and instructional. BUT, had same problem on my 2001 Beetle driver side. Open door, no interior lights, alarm can go off, etc. The lock you have in video looks like an improved version, since my micro switch (with the wires) does NOT come off! It is hard riveted to the steel frame. I took the whole assembly apart like video shows, re-heated all solder joints on board, lubed, checked switches for good electrical functions...All ok. Re-assembled, and still had problem! Turns out that non removable switch fatigued and the plunger was not being pushed in enough to trip it! The fix is to force the body of the switch closer to the latch cam. I jammed a tiny screw under the switch and fixed it! Cheap cheap junk! Too much plastic! Grrrr. Thanks.

Good evening. Firstly congratulations on the video. I did the process on my Golf 2001 and now when I turn the alarm glasses are not closing. The rest was ok including the port light did not work and the headlights on audible alert back to work. If I trigger control I close the windows in the doors work. What can it be?

Many thanks for the informative video, it gives me some place to start. All was well, then my battery went flat and the central locking has refused to work since, except on the driver's door. Other doors will open, but only by using the switch near the window switches on the driver's door handle. Any further ideas would be helpful. Many thanks, Emma

Great job to fix it, but if you don't have your own garage when taking the door out your time out there in the street is limited, so you need a ready new part to fit it as soon as as you can before night time fall.

Many thanks for this video - I just took my rear lock mechanism to pieces and fixed it by reflowing the solder on the circuit board - apparently this (dry solder joints) is a common fault. The symptom was that the rear lock would unlock a few seconds after it was locked, which was very annoying!
