Understanding Volkswagen Door Lock Modules - Part 2

  • Опубликовано: 10 сен 2024
  • In this video, I'll be covering all the mechanical operations of Volkswagen's door lock modules, specifically the driver door lock assembly, and how these devices work. I'll explain why it's pretty much impossible to troubleshoot with the wiring diagrams, but from reverse engineering, we'll be able to. More about that in the next video on the electrics. Also we'll learn how to disassemble the unit and how to put it back together. We'll look at the internals of the unit and see how these components interact with the micro-switches and what these small components do. And we'll look at the most common failure points. Thanks to everyone for watching and enjoy the video.
    For folks would like to learn more about the comfort system, here is a link that MrPmafer provided. moodle.stephens...

    Brilliant! I had almost resigned myself to scrapping my 1998 Golf because of the door lock problems. Your video gave the inspiration and guidance to strip down the driver's door module and realise that my new replacement one was total crap. So, I rebuilt the old one. Now the central locking is fully operational. Thank you!

    My locking rod wasnt moving, and the drivers side door wouldnt lock even though all other doors would, and the alarm armed. So I tried googling the issue but it wasnt until watching your video that any light was shone upon it. If it wasn't for your video i dont know if i would have ever figured out what the problem was. Thanks a million; wish all tutorials were this detailed and thorough.
    Originally, i had the "intermittent locking/unlocking" problem that was addressed in a write-up by taligentx. It was a good write-up and i solved the initial problem, but i overlooked the intricacy of reassembly thereby causing a different problem. He made no mention of aligning the mechanical parts that work together, unlike you. I should have paid closer attention, so thank you and the camera lady for the lesson and video.

    Thanks Terry, a great help and good camera work too, showing all the critical detail. My rear door has been locked closed for two years, makes a noise on the remote locking while trying to open but never does, inside lever didn't release it either. Today I put 12 volts onto the door pillar connector to the lock motor, kept trying the outside handle and after about five seconds it opened. Now I have the confidence to strip it down for a rebuild.

    wonderful exposition that allowed me to repair my drivers door lock, The issue that I was able to solve, was lack of boozer when front lights on with door open, and lack of door bottom light. what I found was one (unless) soldering points on the board where the connector is attached was cracked . I re solder all the points and changed the micro switch located in the mechanical section.

    Fantastic presentation. I really enjoyed this part and look forward to the electrical. I struggle with some electrical . I was investigating yesterday why a unbonded ground in a genset would not power up some residential equipment and I had to study grounding - neutral and ground bonding - floating grounds and finally fixed the problem with a neutral to ground Edison plug. It's amazing how smart they have made circuits today to sense the specific ground. Thanks to guys like you I get to learn . Thanks Terry .

      Hey Steve....With well over a hundred years of refining the electrical code, they've pretty much got it nailed down now. And you can study the code for years and still always learn something. I have to take eight hours of class room study each year to get my electrical contractor's license renewed. Glad to hear that you got your generator fixed.
      As for the electrical, that's why we're here, to share and learn from each other and always glad to help. Glad to hear that you liked the video. The electrical video coming after this one, I feel is a very interesting one too. Take care Steve and always glad to have you drop in.

    Great thorough video. My 1999 VW New Beetle door locks open fine with the fob and interior controls, so the electrical part of the door lock module is working fine. My problem is the key does not open the door. So, I have to use the fob to get in the car. From your video, I learned that the key mechanically opens the car door, regardless of whether or not the micro-switches are working. So, my problem is strictly a mechanical problem with the door lock. Thanks for clarifying that point. I now feel the problem is narrowed down. Thanks again for this excellent video and I will re-post when I find the mechanical root of the problem.

    When you said in depth you weren't kidding. That is probably the neatest unlocking mechanism I've seen. That motor clutch with the springs is a brilliant idea. Too many switches though. The more switches the more chance of failure. Really convoluted design to do something basic. These complex German locks make US domestic locks look elegant, simple, and efficient you know what I mean?

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  10 лет назад

      Hey DJ...lots of mechanical stuff going on with that German engineering for sure. Yes, having that microswitch sliding across the cam for the door open/close function is definitely asking for trouble down the road. And you're right that the US domestic products are no where near this complicated. Thanks for your comment and stopping by.

Interior lights didn't come on the other night and the horn started to beep when I tried to start it. Windows wouldn't do the open and close thing when you turned the key either. stuzman52 Yess in deed :-D Last year I cleaned the module and the switch, but it didn't last long, so I decided to make a complete overhaul, reheat the joints, clean the collector , and replace the switch with a new Saya Burgess V4NST7ul model. So I hope i'll do it right this time. It keeps setting off the alarm, and it's pretty annoing for me and the neighbors :-)) So thanks again , and will leave an update to let you know how it went.
      P.S. Last year I bought a module for experiment, and I took it apart but I couldn't put it back together again and I left it that way , so you can imagine how this video helped me understand witch part is what and where it's sopose to go :-)

      stuzman52 Hello again. Back with the feedback :-) Good news, with the help of your video, I managed to take apart the module, cleaned it, reheated the joints, I glued the new Saia Burgess V4NST7UL microswitch , I had a little trouble with the soldering cause I have a shitty cheap no good letcon , and i hardly managed to solder the wires to the microswitch , but in the end I succeeded. After putting it back together I tested it with 2 vires connected to the microswitch's ears ( I meen on the soldered wires) 3 little AG3 batteries and 1 LED. After connecting everything together I closed with a screwdriver the locking arm as if I would shut the door, and voilla :-) the led light turned on. I repeated this test a couple of times, and everything works like a charm. I don't have the equipment you sir have to test it electricly but I'm sure it will work just fine. Now the only thing I have to do is put a little silicon to protect the soldering from cracks and other stuff. Sooo , you helped me save a coulple of bucks , and learn a little bit about this sophisticated door locking mechanism. So thank you again, I appreciate it a lot :-) and looking forward to some other VW DIY videos. I wish you all the best, have a great week , and a greater weekend. God Bless!

    engineering is further more then whats is need for its application;to
    lock and unlock a door with electronic control... the mechanism and

    Thanks for excellent video. Looking over your shoulder is really informative. On the motor in the lock and the centrifugal clutch, I reckon the idea is that it allows the motor to start to spin up before any real load is applied and in that way the likelihood of the motor stalling at start up is greatly reduced. Control of the motor stopping is more likely to be controlled by current sensing in the control unit. Hence the heavier spring that kicks in as the slide travels down the track, suddenly increases the load on the motor and provides a "soft" endpoint that is less likely to jam and not be totally reliant on micro-switches to define the state of the lock, plus also provide motor protection in the even of the total jamming of the mechanism.
    Have you considered if it is possible to make a signal intercepting harness (female to male) for the lock control, so the motor could be driven to an unlock state manually or the offending switches be replaced by manually switched signals?
    Thanks again, great Video+Explanations of a very frustrating VW "feature"! Rob

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  8 лет назад

      +Rob WARD Hey Rob and hope you're doing well. Yeah, I thought of a few things that could be improved on the design such as the switch that senses the opening and closing of the door. Maybe a proximity or capacitive type switch that didn't rely on the physical contact of the cam pressing on a micro switch. On any of these design changes, it takes a far amount of time to research, find a suitable replacement part and then get it engineered into the system. So, when you have a car tore down and the wife needs it to get back and forth to work, most of the time, it's back to how it was. Things like this is when you're retired and have all of this free time to reinvent something. Glad to hear that you liked the video(s) and wish you well.

    I found out what that safe/unsafe switch does. In other countries, apparently this is used to make it impossible to open the doors either from the inside or outside. I used a different method to correct the faulty switch that is on the mechanical part of the module. It looks like it never worked on my car. I didn't bother to replace that switch. I just installed one of those plunger switches cars used to use on my door, disconnecting that switch and connecting it to my new switch. I bought the new switch at an auto supply store, cut the wires to the old switch, and wired it to the new switch. Works really well, and cost a lot less than a new module.

      I'm not sure what the exact problem is, but it's a mechanical issue. Since it works fine when you take it out, you may want to see if the cable from the inside is binding against anything when you pull on the inside handle.

But, still, I think I need some help. The problem with my door is that when I unlock the car, I still can't open the door until I push them a bit and hear the "click" sound, and then I can open them. It doesn't happen every time that I can't open them, so I presume that something is jamming.

      Hi Dreja! If you have a scanner that can look at the door module, you should be able to see the status of the switches to ensure that they are in the correct position. And another thing - the function of rolling up all windows when holding the key in the lock position doesn't work, either!

    Great video, my VW T5's solenoid (door lock system) has packed up. To add to my problem, the inside handle nor the unlock button would unlock the door. Because it is the LEFT door, there is no key entry. So I dismantled the door handle to get access to the latch (unhooked the cable to get better control over lever)and also unhooked the inside door handle cable. (moved the door panel back about 6 inches to get to it). So I tried to unlock the door by Pulling either the inside door cable, door button or the the outside door latch that I now have access too. NOTHING, the door does not want to unlock. Any suggestions?
    Would I be able to access the (Key hole that normally serves the Key ) and manipulate it with a screwdriver as you did in the video? Thanking you in advance.

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  10 месяцев назад

      One would think that if you removed the door handle and pulled on the short cable or with the door panel removed to gain access to the cable and pulling it would have opened the door. Not sure what's going on unless the door lock module is constantly staying locked. To eliminate this possibility, try disconnecting the battery since there will be no electrical signals trying to keep the door locked. However, make sure that you have any PIN codes for your radio if your car is of that vintage. Good luck and hope it all works out for you! Have a great day!

    I have two genuine drivers doors locks for the seat leon mk1 and the internals in some parts are not as good as that, most parts can be swapped over to make a fully working lock that's worth looking at but the micro switches are handed also some of them have a metal protection lever over the switch like mine, got replacements from chi-na but cant get them now or hard to get, but the old ones can be cleaned out with electrical contact cleaner, in uk the original locks are now around £250 quid so worth having a go and not throwing the old lock away even the copy locks, not seen that on the motor though looks like a motor saver and the motors do burn out.

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  8 лет назад

      When you open the door and close it, take a look at your puddle light down in the door panel or you could also look at your dome light. If you're having an issue with the door switch that works off of the door jamb, you'll notice that the light(s) will come on when the door opens and the light(s) will go off when the door closes. If this doesn't work as described, then you've got a problem with the door switch. But, even still, you should still be able to open the door from the outside. If this seems to work okay, then it's time to take out the lock assembly, (where you stick your key to lock and unlock the car) and take a closer look at the short cable that connects to your outside door handle. When you pull the handle out, check the short cable that connects to a small linkage on the door lock module (check the video(s) for details). If this linkage doesn't go all the way back to its home position, this will prevent the door from opening from the outside. I would guess that this linkage is the issue and so, I feel like you have a mechanical issue instead of an electrical one.

      It's possible but before I change the door lock module, I would want to make sure that there are no broken wires passing through the rubber that connects the door to the A pillar. The radio signal from the FOB is picked up by the central convenience module which sends out a voltage to the door module. The door module is the one that has the power window motor mounted to it. From this module, it sends out a voltage to the door lock module to lock and unlock the door. Check the wiring first as mentioned and look at the wiring between the door module and door lock module. Take a look at the status of these modules with a scanner to verify its operation relating to the the driver door.

      I believe that you're talking about the +12V and negative voltage for the motor. It doesn't matter as the motor will go in one direction to lock and in the opposite direction when the polarity is reversed to unlock.

    How often is it cracked solder joints vs bad micro switches? All four doors of my MKIV Jetta are failed and need the lock modules done. I'm trying to find a source for the microswitches. I figure it would be better to just solder in new microswitches.

      The micro switches within the unit rarely fail. The only micro switch that fails is the one that senses when the door is closed. The most common problem is cracked solder joints especially around the pin connections where the connector plugs onto the door lock module.

      @@stuzman52 Thank you! There are lots of microswitches on eBay for the microswitches that determine when the door is closed. I'll plan on replacing those four and then reflowing solder joints on the others switches. www.ebay.com/itm/124518924291

    Excellent video - Tried to dismantle a lock, out of car, that was double locked. Could not seperate both parts. Could you explain problem. Best regards

    Thanks for the prompt reply. Unfortunately it didn't work. The white plastic lever that the connects to the pull up button refuses to stay up when I prise it up. The replacement lock that I have ready to install (hopefully!) has no such problem for the internal motor turns when the lever is pushed up and down. Its as if some internal spring has been activated to prevent this.

      +camirsw Have you tried removing the door lock cylinder and try pulling on the short cable going to the handle. Here's another fellow from England who describes of how to get a door open. Hopefully, his video can help you out. ruclips.net/video/Fy3KbKkAZZ0/видео.html

    I need a diagram of harness connector’s pins, I replaced a 9 pin actuator instead of 8 pin, And I do not know if there is a difference between pins configuration, or not, because it works good, lock and unlock the door, but the alarm not function properly since I replaced this actuator. If you could help, I will appreciate it.

      You could do a google search to see if there are any free diagrams out there. In my experience, they are hard to find or not available. Other sources that you can use are www.alldatadiy.com or www.eautorepair.net There is a small subscription fee, but you'll be able to access all the wiring diagrams, repair information and technical service bulletins for your vehicle. For the small fee, I think the price is well worth it.

    Hello?
    I watched one of his videos ... doing maintenance on the lock of Golf.
    Friend ... My Golf, so folded to be opened,
    I need to make a pressure on the door pillar, pushing it into
    and after a little click, then I open the door.
    This is happening with 4 doors.
    Perchance, by their experience, would know what the problem:
    And there is only substiruindo repair or full lock?
    Thank you so much.

      Hi Joca...I'm really not sure what you're saying. Sounds like you're pushing on the door pillar for all four doors to get them open. Don't know how pushing on the door pillar will allow your doors to open. Sorry, not sure what you're saying!
