Today we look at how VW door latches fail. This is an issue not just with the Jetta as shown in the video. This is a part that I have replaced all across the brand. Every car in the VW line has had an issue with door latch failures. You may also hear them called "door lock modules". That is because they are such an important part of the central locking system

My wife's 2013 Passat driver door actuator went south this week after we just got the clockspring replaced under warranty. VW wanted to charge $630 to replace the actuator and bowden cable. I purchased replacement OEM parts myself (recyclers and eBay) and my grand total was $128. The only tools I had to buy was a triple square for my ratchet. I can confirm that water getting inside is a major culprit. We've had pretty constant freezing, warm, freezing, warm here in MO for the last 2 months and then with the polar vortex, the extreme cold has frozen the water inside it completely solid.
Great job! I had my door lock open/close micro switch fail on my '01 beetle several years ago. What a nightmare! It happened on a road trip too. Open the driver door and the interior lights did not come on. Raised cane w/the burg alarm too! The next nightmare was getting the latch out to repair it. I couldn't get it out w/o removing the whole window regulator system! Basically, gut the door. Then worry about breaking stuff like the little snap tabs on the trim and such. Anyway, I found that the switch was fine, it was that the back plane the switch was mounted to fatigued causing the switch plunger not to work! Somehow I managed to band aide the thing and it's still working to this day....most of the time! While I had everything apart, I cleaned and oiled the window regulator pulleys and slides. Window glides nice now. Whadda pain!
I don't understand how people can give a thumbs down to an informative video... maybe they meant thumbs down to / towards the latch failing, in any case, they should post the reason why! Thanks for the video Charles! Happy holidays and a great new year to you & your family!
I'm here w/ Charles because of your video
tducketts Thanks for watching watching my videos & following me to his channel! Have a great Holiday & all the best for the new year!
***** HAHAH, that is exactly what I thought too. When I find a video I don't like, I just click away. No need to waste time on it. I hope that you and your fam have a wonderful holiday man. Glad to connect with ya. Cheers to 2015
tducketts That is AWESOME! :) :) :)
***** I know. It is awful. It takes all I have to sit in that chair and film. LOL I just cant seem to sit still :)
I've replaced all four locks on a Passat. I got lucky with that pre tension spring, I just put the cable back in the door handle in roughly the same position it came out and they work fine. Always wondered what spring was for !
Hi and thanks for the video! You could also have said something about the how to fix “freezing failure” that seems to be really common in at least Passats in colder climates. Door won’t open, or won’t lock until warmed up etc. Some people see this is because the latch freezes (water ingress from window seal), and some people see it’s caused by moisture in the exterior or interior door handle bowden cables, which then won’t move (unlock) or move back (lock). Suggested fixes include liberal application of WD-40, windshield de-icer, or opening up the door and lubing latch and cables with white lithium grease. Looking forward to a video on this!
where would you spray wd40?
Yes, I want to know this, too. My 13 Passat just started having this problem. The driver's side door wont unlock first thing in the morning.
@@bretgtimk7968 Everywhere, like you always do with WD-40 😁
Seriously, if you suspect a cable problem you do have to get to the cables first, so the door panel needs to come off. WD-40 displaces moisture and loosens dirt, but it's not that great as a lubricant. That's why I was asking HumbleMechanic about what would be his recommendation for the best cable lubrication solution for the long term. Removing and reinstalling door panels is not something I want to do regularly.
Help for some, I sprayed PB Blaster dry silicone lubricant into my door lock. The temputure got to -5 f and the lock still worked. 🙂
gonna try that one thx@@faliray4889
You've had the answers to every question I have for my wagon, I appreciate that lol
Hey man. Love the videos. I'm learning a bunch and am better able to diagnose issues in my van as a result. For example, I recently bought a 2002 Eurovan MV and it had four lock related issues... 1) it came with 2 different keys and no remote entry key fob. 2) the power locks weren't working at all 3) while I could lock the driver's door, I couldn't unlock it manually with the key. and finally 4) the liftgate wouldn't lock. I checked the fuses and #14 on the lower level was blown so I swapped that and voila, the power doors locked... and then the fuse blew again, so there is probably a short in the wiring harness somewhere, but at least I know I don't need a bunch of $80 actuators. I bought a new genuine VW/Audi liftgate handle w/ tumbler, watched some vids and was able to rekey the driver's door and liftgate to match the ignition, passenger door and sliding door. So that's problem 1 and 4 completely sorted. And problem 2 narrowed down. That leaves 3. In rekeying the driver's lock I noticed that a previous owner replaced it with an aftermarket handle and cylinder.. it opens fine from both inside and out, it locks easily with the key, and the actuator works, but when I turn the key left to unlock it nothing happens... it feels like it catches very slightly and then nothing. Any suggestions? I don't want to buy a new handle if it is really an issue with the latch mechanism, and vice versa. Thanks in advance.
I wish I had watched this video and some of the other diy videos before I spent $450 on replacement of the door lock mechanism. This is the 2nd time I have had to replace them. My issue was the locks continuously locking/unlocking when accelerating over 10mph. 1st time was covered by warranty, but this second time, a year later it was a different door so was no longer covered. Got it fixed at my dealership and less than a week later, the issue started again, but on another door! So, I'm assuming I will have to replace every door eventually. This time, I will trying to repair it myself...so frustrating!! Anyways, thanks for the informative video! 👍🏼
That lock/unlock madness at 15kp/h is currently driving me mad on my Amarok. Thanks for the video - it's been helpful to find out what is finally wrong with my door. Now to find out how much VW is going charge me to get it fixed...
2018 VW Atlas front passenger door electrical fault 105k miles. Bought one from a junkyard on ebay for $55. Replaced myself. Still very happy with my first VW since the 90s. Vehicle is awesome.
What about repairing it? Sounds like the most common issue is in soldering joints, that can be easily fixed by re-soldering them. Very informative video!
Actually the main problem with them is the solder points at the plug which typically crack. Also, the mechanical switch on the mechanical portion of the module fails... Those are the 2 main fail points, NOT the specific switches on the circuit board.
Thanks for the info I just figured out why my door open light won't go off on my mk4 gli Jetta. Thx sir
Audi, too, Charles. My passenger front failed on Friday evening. 2008 Audi A4. It did last 16 years. I'm not looking forward to replacing module after module, but that's modern cars. My 2000 A4 was much simpler. I'm dreading getting a 2020's car.
Yeah Charles! Going back to 2014 for this one, I'll tackling this (and a door seal leak problem soggy floor yuck) on my b6!! Thanks for the great info as always!
Thank you. Liked the info you presented in the video. Gave it a thumbs up.
I recently bought a 2003 VW Jetta for my daughter. It's in pretty good shape for the most part but both rear doors don't open or close with the remote key. However when I touch them I can feel like they are trying to move when the buttons on the key remote are pressed. The drivers door actuator sometimes opens and closes with the remote but sometimes it only moves just a little, not enough to lock the door completely or open it completely.. When this happens (which is most of the time) we have to put and turn the key in the lock for it to open or lock. Sometimes to get it to open we have to turn it several times and it seems to be getting worse. The windows and lights work fine and there is no issue with the alarm. My question is do you think new actuators/locks are in order or could it just be in need of lubing?
I have tried the Russian way today and it freaking worked . My driver side door is back to normal and locking with the key . All you have to do is tap on side of the door by the lock with a wrench or a small hammer by the bottom screw holding the lock to the door frame and you re just fine again but don't break it and blame it on me
Charles. Awesome video. I have an MK6 Golf variant which is based off the mk5. On occasions when opening the front right door won’t always open. You have to lock and unlock the car again and then you can usually get it open. Does this sound like symptoms of a failing mechanism?
8 people that watched this video, own Toyota and could not figure out why the lock mech. looks so different. Not your fault @HumbleMechanic.
Thank You for doing an Exceptional Video(s). I ordered a new Cheap replacement and decided to yank mine apart. What I found (in my case) was the switch that tells the car if the door is open or not had failed. I carefully removed the switch and ohm'ed the contacts. In the Closed position sometimes it would not make contact. I cleaned the contacts (and checked the circuit board for bad solder joints). *My car would re-lock the doors and do weird stuff, maybe open the door and the Alarm would go off.
Do you happen to remember which contacts were the faulty ones in your case? And do you know what the resistance range needs to be on a functional switch? It's times like this that i wishi had access to the dealer datalink program for VW... I'm a heavy duty truck mechanic so at work when i get a truck with this type of malfunction i know i can get the answer immediately and fix the fault without a problem
@@aaroninfante6589 Yes, the Switch that's at the Top (outside). If you're Careful you can take it apart (and clean the Contacts).
@@1957Panman i appreciate it thank you!
Thank You. Video helps to get a picture of what’s wrong and make the best choice between me and a real mechanic. 🙂
Thank you! Answered the question why my door latch keeps getting stuck when it gets below 32 degrees.
Help needed, i have an issues with mine. The lock is in deadlock, will not unlock from inside or out side. Even with the key
Need to unlock the latch so i can open the door to remove the latch... 😮
Thank you for the info, this has failed on my Beetle.... I will be replacing the driver side as soon as the part gets her, thank your the little tidbit of info about that spring 👍👍👍
This is a rip off. How can VW have such a failing locks on their cars. VW should replace the locks for free or do a recall and put new locks that works permanently. I am having similar issues and I am frustrated that I have to spend on a known fault of VW which they fail to address.
+Aaron Gnanam I have seen these failures on other brands too.
Sucks either way.
Aaron Gnanam
Failed VW locks won't close. Failed Honda locks won't let you out of your car evwn when pulling both handles. Neither is made to last a lifetime, like everything else these days. My 02 GTI's failed in 2018. Not bad.
Thanks again humble ! Mine finally shit the bed in my 04 r32. Door ajar light is beeping at me nonstop, door light stays on. Intermittent locking with driver side using the keyfob. I got triple squares from when I replaced my hatch latch last year. Great content as always.
recall is only when life or safety is involve. If your vehicle run like shit and safety is NOT involve, they will not make a recall!
Lol! Consumers are funny.
Great my 2012 passat b7 is having a issue on the driver door. Only happens sometimes. I really have noticed this in the winter. Sometimes driver door wont unlock via fob and i felt the handle on the inside being very stiff.
Hi Charles, great vids!
VW Golf MK5 owner, driver's door not locking using the fob. Having taken off the door skin, getting the the lock, I disconnected the power plug, attaching it to the new one.
Using the fob/clicker to close the door and open, I did feel, or hear any movement from the new lock. I replaced the old one anyway. So the door still locks and opens manually with the key (opening all other doors automatically) as it did with the old lock. The door opens with the outside handle, and the inside without issue.
You touched on possible problems, mentioning a broken pin in the actual plug connector. I'm technically minded with ability, but not a mechanic 😊 logically, given that I installed a new lock, if thinking it might be the socket. Any direction, or maybe a vid you've already done would be absolute magic, in the mystery. Or if anyone else has come across this before. Also when I open the door with key, the windows wind down!
Carry on making the excellent vids Charles, inspiring and really helpful to the automotive community, us non DIY mechanics! 👍👍👍
Stephen Headley I’m having the same problem if I try to unlock or lock my two front doors with the key fab it doesn’t work. I have to manually lock or open them. Where did you buy the parts from?
I have an MK4 golf I bought and I've been having issues with my door it gets stuck at the Inn Between mode where it won't open or it won't close I replaced the latch and this is the first video I have about 20 I watched that talks about a preload. Now I still have to kick the door every once in awhile if I don't slam it closed or else it gets stuck in the in between so if it's stuck either going to climb out the window or you're going to kick the door kind of push it in a little bit more now I'm going to take it apart again and see if the preload was never set on that new unit I bought
thank you
2014 JSW cluster said the passenger door was open, but in fact it was closed. I then searched for videos and of course it was a failed part from VW video from you! ha ha ha
Very nice info. Thanks again. PS I was looking for a door ajar switch built into the door lock system, and was wondering about the how the door lock worked. Thanks again.
I have an MKV Jetta that intermittently fails to unlock via remote/unlock button. It always unlocks via interior handle pull, though. Thoughts?
forevermarkel I have the same problem with my rabbit
I have the same problem as well. Has anyone found out of the wiring in the door could be the problem, or is this always a problem where you need to replace the entire latch?
same problem
I have had problems with doors not locking. First it was the driver side front, and now the passenger side.I have cured them both by taking out the rubber grommet and spaying a liberal dose of WD40 or similar light penetrating oil onto the module.I realise this will not work if there is a serious fault, but it's worth a shot before going for a more difficult and expensive fix.
Great video. I had to have mine replaced today on my 2017 beetle. They charged me $1061.00.
Hmm...I have a question about the Jetta Mk5. Are the actuators for the front and rear on the right side the same? And the ones on the left the same (front and rear)? I'm looking up parts online and it's only showing me front parts, but I have to replace one of the actuator's in a rear door...
Awesome video. Passat b5 saloon 1.8T 20V. vcds says "00928 - Locking Module for Central Locking; Front Driver Side (F220)
27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent" . Exam question - accessing the CCM is easy, replacing the door lock is a big deal. three possible causes. bad ccm, bad wire, bad door lock actuator. how would you diagnose which of those 3 before acting
Could outer door cable be out of adjustment on one of these? My '14 CC rr window doesn't drop to open door until the latch is tripped, opposed to correct after handle movement (~8mm) but before latch is released. Curious if that can be adjusted or just an early sign of failure. Door ding indicates that door might have been jarred hard before. Does the latch need to be released after 3:10 setting the cable?
I had a 2006 Jetta and the door latch failed on the passenger side. I now have a 2020 Jetta and the door latch has failed on the passenger side. It is weird like the one you mention in the video. I locks the door every time I speed up (at least it engages, it doesn't actually lock it). I have to engage the manual lock and it stops this from happening but then I can't open the door from the outside. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for this informative video. At 4:40 you suggest that water could get in the mechanism and freeze and cause unlocking issues. Do you have any recommended fixes for that? Winter is looooooooog! Fill the handle up with lock de-icer?
You addressed the door latch mechanism and how it related to mechanical failure, but I’m curious about the electronic failure. In my case the trunk auto lock fob stopped working, then the inside door lock, then the fob for all doors stopped, and now the key in the door lock stopped as well. I am trying to figure out if they are all related?

Hi Charles,
2010 VW CC 2.0T Sport
In June, Both rear door locks failed and both front headlamps failed too. The dealer fixed the left rear and right front headlamp now the right rear door and left headlamp failed. The problem with the doors is the same. They do not lock when I do with the fob, car, door etc. The alarm did not sound with left rear however it does sound when I lock now but rear right door does not lock. Any recommendation. I ordered the parts for the right rear and left headlamp. I will do them myself.
Thanks Charles, excellent content as always.
Does this failure accompany random alarms from the anti-theft as well? I have my 2000 gti that will set the alarm off, if I insert the key and wait like 30 seconds to a minute, it locks the door and if I try to start the car, it sets the alarm off. This started happening after I replaced my battery. Is there a setting in the computer that may have defaulted when I changed my battery?
My Alhambra 2nd generation locks immediately after unlocking with fob.... Man, my Italian cars are more reliable than VAG these days... Oh well, good thing I love working on cars. Thanks for the vid, interesting to see all the designs and weak points that are out there.
Thanks for posting this video! Quick question: the outer latch preload: the original factory module that I removed from my ‘03 Jetta did not have the preload set, and I did not set the preload when I installed a replacement module, and all seems to work fine. Is the preload an optional procedure? Just curious since like I said, mine was apparently not set in the original factory config.
I did not do the pre-load either on my OEM replacement driver's door latch, but I can't open the door after the initial fob unlock unless I hit the handle with the butt of my hand.
Very informative! Described the problem I have with my 2006 Jetta passenger door to a "T". Front passenger door randomly gives false indications in the cluster or falls out all together. Windows and locks on that door fail most of the time.. Almost afraid to use that door because it is such a hassle. I am a clutz with DIY auto repair but now at least I know what is going on. I will take it to dealership to get them to fix it. Maybe I will have them do the trunk latch while they are at it which has been problematic from day one. Dealership would never fix under warrantee since it would only happen in cold weather and dealer is in Tucson AZ so they could never duplicate the problem. So now it is on my dime.
I have 1 door and trunk latch issues,
plus all functions of drivers door not working unless the door is 12" in open position
No lock no window, no mirror
Plus now the wipers and cruse not coming on...
if u have any suggestions please...helps
The tension procedure you briefly mentioned, would this eliminate my annoying 2 step door opening procedure? I have to push on the door to hear a click, then I can operate the handle to unlatch the door. I have never had a car with so many door latching issues.
Likely would
Hi Charles, I am new to your channel thanks for your passion for VW. Your channel has inspired me to work on a VW 2003 Mk4 GTI.
I also have the lock-over-15-mph option ON and it looks and unlocks the rear roor every time I go under 15 that over.
Hey, question. If these fail on so many vehicles, why isn't there a recall to have them fixed?
Vw is too cheap to make a recall lol
Ugh... Well, that's not going to be fun. The electrics in my drivers door in my car (B5 Passat) was a little wonky if I use the remote (press lock and it would lock then unlock, press unlock and it would unlock just to lock again). Not a big deal to me, and so I just opted to just use the key (I never cared for remote lock). But the other night the key stopped working (can still unlock and lock from the inside, and door handle on both inside and outside still work - just can't lock or unlock the one dor using the key). I see it looks like I'm going to have fun making a repair (more likely will require a replacement).
Could you please post the link to the DIY replacement you mentioned at 8:58? Thanks!

Thank youI have not gone and fixed it yet but I was having trouble after putting the door latch in with the outer door handle sticking out
hi great video ,,stated to have problems with the drivers door it wont open when you pull the handel from the outside ... but works fine with the central locking and opens fine from the inside all other doors works fine its just the drivers door from the outside any help please
Tell me, there is a bora 2001. Doors won't open with key or alarm. With the key, the thrust rises and that's it, you release the key and it goes back. If I lower one glass, it falls by itself, just need to remove ducktape, then from the inside will I be able to open it or will it be like with a key, just raising the thrust, but without opening it?
I'm one of the lucky few with that crazy auto-lock problem. My rear driver side door doesn't always lock all the way, so the system keeps trying to lock it again when hitting the 15 mph mark (mine's actually at 10); driving me nuts! Could that be a poor connection, or the motor going out possibly? Also, is that motor replaceable, or the whole actuator will need to be swapped? Right now, I'm locking that door manually and it's a pain; any help will be greatly appreciated. Great videos man, I love when someone is truly knowledgeable and sharing their passion. Pet Peeve; correcting someone's ignorance while watching 'informative' videos.
Hi great videos I have a B6 passat the N/S/F door won't close from outside
Do you have a video for fixing the door latch itself? My door isn't reporting anything on the cluster, but my driver's side door has to be slammed for the latch to engage and fully close the door.
Going to be doing that video soon. Got a mk5 with a bad latch in my driveway
Thanks so much! Our passat's latch isn't engaging fully and we can figure out how to get to the actual latch inside of the door panel. I'll keep an eye out!
I have a 2013 mk6 GLI that the driverside does not work with the key fob or inside switches. What could be the problem?
I have problems setting the preload on the outer door pull. The spring slips right off the little hook with the slightest pull. Do you have any suggestions? I even heated the end of the spring help it not slip but to no avail
I’ve never ran into one that would not set. It only takes a slight pul to overcome the spring.
I have vw tiguan, and the window mirror dosnt close on the passanger side when i lock the car, but they both work when i operate useing the knob inside. The code reader suggest a centra locking motor, ground to B.
Would that require a lock?
Hi!
I have a Jetta Mk5 2010 Wolfsburg Edition 2.0t and my rear doors don’t lock. The front doors work perfectly fine. Could anyone help me please?
Also I would like to say the video was great and very helpful. Keep up with the good work!
Good day Humble Mechanic. I have a Polo where the passenger door does not want to open from the inside or outside. Now I've managed to remove the inner panel without causing damage to the speakers and so on, but my problem is, I cannot reach to the central locking unit mounting bolts!!! VW SA told me the only way is to break it out. Do you know a way to break the unit without damaging the door?
Question. Where could I go to have a rear sunshade installed professionally? I have a 2013 Volkswagen CC sport plus
Hi Humble mechanic Nice videos thank for that.
Humble on Tiguan 2016 I can open the hatch. I already changed the latch but It stil doesn’t open. Could you help to figure it out why?
On winter season the switch got frozen many time, could be the problem here.
I have an 04 golf tdi the flashers and door locks go off even when driving? Any insight as to what it could be ?
Would have good to hear about the key locking tumler.? How do you deal with that or do you need to?
Hi, There nice illustration.
But I get one question: How to get the deadlocked door that can not open inside and outside. THEN I can follow your instruction and debug the lock mudule?
Thanks.
Yep, my door has done this and I don’t want to pull it apart and cut it off to get in. Is there a fix?
Hi, great channel.. I'm working on a 2008 VW Polo 1.4TDI ... front and rear offside lock actuators ... noticed the plastic bracket held to the card with two plastic pop rivets. This bracket appears to serve no purpose other than to support the actuator whilst refitting (to align actuator with the bolt holes)... correct me if I am wrong... anyway, in both cases, the bracket has become damaged - there is a split/crack ... questions... is the bracket essential to the correct operation of the actuator, does a cracked bracket need replacing?
Really insightful, cheers!!
Hi i have a 2005 vw golf mk5 5 door hatch. i have a problem that not many mechanics or auto electricians in Australia can diagnose without changing parts. my drivers side front door only and tailgate works when the key is inserted in to the door lock and only locks and opens the boot and front drivers door but with the remote it only locks and opens the tailgate not any door. i bought the car like that. please any advice will help thanks
hi, your video is great..i have a touareg and the passenger rear door one day stop opening. I saw your video and decided i will deal with it myself....And I did it, i took the lock out!!!!
The problem, I live in Panama and the local dealer takes a month! to bring the replacement. I will try to fix it, but the video you refer from the other guy I dont see the link..
Can you post the link from the guy of Deutch autparts pls?
My problem is in the mechanical part, it works fine until it locks, when you unlock and pull the cable, it wont open. From your video I think it will be the the gears or something..
Thanks for your great support

My 2012 Jetta door bounces back when I close it. It won't latch. Does that sound like a failure of this part?
Hi. I have a VW Touran 2007 plate. The rear door doesn't lock nor does the electric window work. Do you think replacing the door lock module unit resolve the problem ??
My wife has a 2012 Jetta 2.5 SE and the left rear module is the problem. She has the 10mph repeated locking problem
I have this same problem with my 2012 Jetta. If you've found how to repair the module (other than full replacement), please share the fix with me!
I replaced it on a 2004 beetle but it’s weird, as soon as I lock it with the key from outside, the only way to open the door again is leaving the key turned to the left while pulling the handle but then the alarm goes on. When you unlock with the key, as you return to the key to the middle to take it out, it locks itself! The old latch didn’t do that. The problem was with the switch that tells the car the door is open or closed.
Great video. i just picked up a 97 golf VR6 and I'm having an issue with the power windows and locks.
i can lock the drivers door with the key, but the passenger side one doesnt lock unless i put the key in the passenger door.
also i gt the passenger side window that rolls down on its own during the night and unlocks the doors. any suggestions as to what to look at.

Haha yeah vw door latches are common. On most VWs. Haha
Hello, very nice videos indeed.. I have a 2008 audi TT, I can lock the doors with my remote, but when I try to unlock it with the remote, I CANNOT open it from the outside, but can only unlock from the inside.....it happened on both driver/passenger side doors...any ideas on what could cause such a problem? thank you .
need new batteries for your remote?
Good job. 05 passat Had r rt dr show open intermit. Got worse. Now int lights, sunroof, windows, n gas-trunk switches won't work. Doors lock but unlock themselves after a sec or 2. What do ya think?

hi mate, I have the vw passat b5. 5, and I m suspecting that I have a problem with the passanger latch, so the problem is when I lock the light flash and car beeps but when I unlock the car no lights flash and no beeps? could the latch be the problem? I found the fuse blowed behind the steering of the lights flashing but it didn't solve the problem I changed the fuse but when I unlock no flash lights and no beeps alarm, thanks, I hope you have some ideas for me 😊
Good vid.
I have a 2002 Passat GLX V6 30v with this problem on the Font Drivers door. Do you think its better to re-solder it or just replace the part? thanks.
I have a 98 Jetta MK3 that when I shut the car off, or even when I am driving, or even when it is parked, the power windows go down by themselves. Now this doesn't happen all the time, it's unpredictable. I've come out in the morning, and sometimes when it's raining to find the windows down. I've owned several MK3 and never had this problem before, any ideas? thanks
Hey Bob did you ever figure out the issue I am having the same problem
So when you put it back together you have to set that preload then finish installing then its how you say tensioned correctly if I got that right?
Sounds like you got it
Hey having an issue with my 01 allroad passenger door. The door opens and closes fine. But when I lock the door wether its with the fob or the interior lock button I can still pull the exterior handle and the door will open. Would that be the switch failing? As I've taken it apart, cleaned it and checked the switch which seems to be working fine. I've been hoping to find a fix before I fork out the 400$ for a new latching mechanism
2002 Cabrio. Replaced the power window actuator and now the dashboard will not light up. It has had work done before I got the car. Power door locks don't work, and the lock on door latch has been replaced. Looks like the door could not be opened and was gutted from the inside to get it to open and then repaired. Could the "door latch" be a reason why after replacing the actuator the dash board will not light up? Might have "hit" something installing the window and now there is failed communication?
The only way to lock and unlock the driver's door in with the key from the outside. Lock and the alarm light is "armed". Unlock, alarm disarms, and the power windows can also go down with the key. It is just the interior and dashboard lights that will not light up at night anymore when I turn on the headlights.
I took my Jetta 2011 model to dealership to diagnose a vehicle start up issue, where the engine stalls on start up. The dealership told me they didn't find any misfire codes but a door latch code and the fuel pump may be not running as required because of this. They also suggested replacing the door latch may solve my issue. Is a door latch in anyway related to my issue?
3:03, I've found a video where a guy says theres no purpose for this spring and he takes it off. My non genuine part the spring pops back out when you put it in the hook. What should I do?
I have exact same situation now and as far I'm guessing, it is here to adjust tension and then when you open the door it just unlatches itself so it is used only once. @HumbleMechanic help.
I have a 2000 Passat... Today it locked and I could not unlock it with the fob or the hard key. The red LED on the fob was blinking when I pushed the button. I thought maybe the programming on the fob got erased so the car was not recognizing the fob. So after having to call roadside assistance to unlock it... I then tried to reprogram the fob. I only have one key so I previously had to use the method where you remove the lock cylinder and use a screwdriver as my "Second key". This time though the door lock mechanism was not locking or unlocking the car... even when turning it manually with the screwdriver. Does that mean I need to replace the door latch mechanism?
My inside door handle keeps slipping (looses tension) when I try to open from inside (outside works fine). Works for few times then looses all tension again. This happened after I replaced window regulator. Is there way to anchor the inner door cable so it won't loose/stretch from opening door from inside? I was thinking of advancing inner door cable further behind regulator panel then taping it down?
I have a 2008 vw transporter Carville passenger door wont open from inside or outside fault no commutation comfort control module . cleared code .still cant open door. any hints or tips.regards tim

I have no communication to drivers rear door control module the window does not go down from Drivers front window switch, would a door lock be the issue?
Hi mate. Ive been looking everywhere but unable to find the right info, so hoping you, or someone else has some insight. Ive replaced the drivers door lock mechanism in my b6 and and now straight after unlocking the car the door wont open, but once the car has been opened from the inside handle it will open from the outside handle. Does the latch have to go in a certain way or is there any info that i need to know?
Many thanks if you can give me any advice. Cheers!
The lock/unlock above 15mph is exactly what's going on with my Jetta Sport 😑.
That's normal. You can shut it off.
Morgan Kovarik can you please tell me how it’s driving me crazy

Morgan Kovarik what do you mean by central?
hello, i would like to get your opinion. i have a 2011 jetta. i tried to lock the door using the remote, but one door does not lock. i.e. when i open that door from outside, the alarm goes off. Based on that symptom, is it electrical mechanical?
I have an 06 Jetta TDi....replaced the door latch and wiring harness on the passenger side. The car still thinks the passenger door opens but it is closed making the alarm go off and draining battery....any thoughts? And it is after the car is in sleep mode, not instantly.
Ok I have a similar issue. My passenger side unlock is not working! All others work fine. The outside door handle is weak on returning to the fully seated closed position and remains 1/8" out. But even if I push to seat it to the door the unlock does not work. Lock works like a champ on fob, switch and 15kms driving speed but no unlock on passenger side only. It sounds like the solenoid is functioning the same as the other doors on both lock and unlock. Could the return spring be shot on the lock mechanism???? And not seating to allow the it to work on the open cycle or could the cable be stretched??? Any help would be great. Any pics of the assembly would be great.
Hi. I have a jetta 2007, when I lock it (from key or from inside) the right front door sounds different (all doors lock, then the right front makes some additional sound like giving up). But it does lock and unlock correctly. On VagCom I have an implausible error, and with "central module comfort system", when I lock from inside, the 3 good ones show up as locked, but this one as "safe". Any ideas how it can be fixed before I tear it appart? Thanks a lot.
My B6 passat has been driving me crazy because the exterior door handle won't open. I've read online that it can also be the cable simply falling out of its track?
Update. Found the issue to be a broken hinge on the Exterior Door Handle Base, it's the spring loaded part that swings open as you pull on handle. Was able to snap handle back in place and get door to open if applying downward pressure while opening handle. Video on how to access and replace Exterior Door Handle Base for B6's would be nice, no luck finding anything so far. Do you remove the interior panel to access this??
I have a 2001 VW Jetta with a door latch problem on the driver door (power windows/locks). Is it possible to just replace the entire door with a door with manual windows and locks?
