    Congrats! You won’t regret it. I “drove” a 7300 for a few years. Stepped up to the 7610 in Nov of 2023. I noticed a difference in receive from the 7300 immediately. I find new things it does all the time. Being able to connect a LAN directly, the diversity receive, and the cw filtering are my favorite differences from the 7300….so far! I’m very happy with my 7610. Good luck and have fun! 73

      Someone else commented about the diversity reception and "tracking". Will be a gamechanger for me. I had a listen around the bands a bit last night... I can tell there is a difference on receive on the 7300 - I want to do a side by side comparison video though!

  • @M0LMK

    Great choice Hayden. Let me know if you get stuck with anything, I've had my 7610 for about 3 years and love it! My favourite way to operate is to use my main antenna on VFO A and a Loop On Ground (using the RX Ant input) on VFO B. You can then set both VFO to the same frequency by pressing and holding the Dual-W button and set the waterfall display to "Dual". Press and hold the "Tracking" soft button in the main menu. This will lock both VFO together and give you "brain powered" diversity receive. Works great with headphones as you can hear signals move from one side of your head to the other as the signal fades from one antenna to the other.
    One of the very few disappointments is that the 7610 fails to remember antenna selections when in the tracking mode so you have to set it up each time. Only a 30 second job but a little annoying!

      Thanks Matt!
      Great tip - I would've never have thought of doing that.
      The only other issue I have come across is storage of repeaters in memories...
      I wanted to monitor a few repeaters on the RX side (maybe scanning) but it seems when I try to program them, it only saves the output frequency. So to talk back you'd need to swap it over to the main band, hit Dual watch, press and hold split, set your tone and then you're good to go. Again a few extra steps, but certainly possible.

    Congratulations Hayden! The look on your face and the noise you made when you took it out of the box we ALL understand 😂I have my eye on a 7610 too down the track. I did own a 7600 (the previous model) and loved it but downsized to a 7300 when they came out as for the amount of time I was on air it was kind of a waste and I was interested in the smaller footprint and SDR etc. The speaker looks great too and I had a previous model Icom speaker I purchased with the 7600. I ignored the fact the price they charge for the speakers is kind of outrageous 😂yes they have a bit of filtering on them (in my last speaker it was a switch that hung different caps across the speaker to change it’s frequency response!) but nothing looks better than the matching speaker!!! For free it’s a no brainer! I look forward to seeing you use your new toy and if I end up buying one (it’ll happen 😂) it’s YOUR fault! 😂73, Craig VK3CRG

    I purchased my 7300 in 2017 and purchased the 7610 about two years ago! I love both radios and don’t plan to part with either one! I like to switch between the 7300 and 7610 depending on my mood plus the 7300 has lower power consumption on receive so allot of times if I just want to listen I’ll turn on the 7300 instead of the 7610 ( not trying to brag of course but it is nice to have the luxury to have a choice of using either the 7300 or 7610…. A blessing) While I do have a 705 as well it is nice that if I needed to operate in a different location I could bring the 7300 along to have a 100 watt radio! 73 and congratulations and enjoy. (P.S. I also liked my waterfall settings on my 7300 and copied them to the 7610 as well!)

  • @hotairfred
    @hotairfred 2 месяца назад +1

    Great choice Hayden! I use one with a BOG on Ant2/R and my main transmitting antennas on Ant1 with a home-assembled 6x2 switch to mix and match between my other antennas. Running FT8 I will run 2 instances of WSJT-X on VFO-A and B and am able to sometimes pick up different signals better based on which antenna I have selected. The BOG is great for 160m DX.
    Also the 6x2 switch is nice because I don't have to compromise with just the 2 transmit Antenna ports on the back of the 7610.
    One other thing. The Blue USB on the back is a USB 3.0 I/Q out that can be used with HDSDR and SDRPlay. I can use it to tune around the band for DX, or run a CW or RTTY skimmer with IQ out of the software to SDC Connectors software with a built in DX Cluster to throw spots in your favorite logging software. In effect you have 3+ independent receivers with your 7610 if using this output.

      One day! Small upgrades. Up until now, I've never had a radio like this

  • @WA1LBK
    @WA1LBK 2 месяца назад +1

    Interesting topic on the upgrade; I'm similar to you in being an ICOM guy, also currently own an IC-7300, IC-9700, & IC-705. My IC-7300 replaced an original IC-756 (the 1st version with the monochrome display; about the same physical size as the IC-7610). One thing I gave up from my old IC-756 in moving to the IC-7300 was the 2 antenna ports; I wound up missing this feature more than I thought I would because I'm a long-time 6 meter operator. I used to leave the 6 meter beam connected directly to one anteanna port, & used a conventional coax switch on the other to switch HF anteanns; now I find I have to use 2 coax switches with the IC-7300 to accomplish the same thing. I also don't operate HF as much as I might otherwise because the IC-7300 is usually parked on 50.313. MHz., monitoring 6 M. FT8 for band openings. 🙂 With the IC-7610 I could leave one receiver "parked" on 50.313 MHz. while operating HF.
    One of the reasons I replaced the IC-756 with the IC-7300 was the much easier portability of the IC-7300 for portable operation such as Field Day (this was also long before I bought the IC-705). If I do wind up getting an IC-7610, I will probably do the same as you & keep the IC-7300 for (comparitively to the IC-705) "high-power" (100 W.) portable operation. I have the SDR-Control app on my iPad & use it with the IC-705 (mainly for wirelss FT8) & ocaisionally the IC-9700; being able to operate the IC-7610 as well would be nice. They fact that the IC-7610 has been around for a while means that there are also many on the used equipment market; considering that route vs. buying brand new (& yes, I'm asware that some of the early production IC-7610's had display issues). As you also mentioned, it is NOT an inexpensive radio; but the same also applied to the IC-705, & that little rig is a blast to operate! 😁
    Thanks for posting!
    73,
    Tom WA1LBK

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  2 месяца назад

      Thanks Tom,
      Completely agree - and in fact that is what I have done - 6 metre yagi is on the 2nd antenna port on the radio. I'm still trying to figure out if I can have two instances of WSJT-X running - one on the main band and another on the sub band - so I can permanently monitor both sides.
      The 705 is a great portable radio - but the 7300 does really give you that extra "grunt". It's just too hard to part with the IC-7300 - as you'd know it's probably the best all round radio that I've owned up to now!

    I was a loyal Icom customer, every new radio I ever bought over the years was Icom. I have among others the 7300 and it's great but I was thinking of upgrading purely for bragging rights a while back and the next radio was to be the 7610. that is until I saw Bob Nagy's review of the Anan 7000 and I had to have one. Admittedly the two are not really direct competitors, the 7610 being a conventional box with knobs while the Anan is completely neutered and comes with a learning curve. Once you are past the initial stages the Anan running Thetis offers two game changing features that no other brand can offer. Adaptive pre-distortion for an ultra clean transmit signal even with an external amplifier and the so called noise reduction 2 which turns noisy band conditions into almost FM quietness no other NR scheme comes close. It will also do true diversity reception. On the down side remote site operation is not it's strong suit and not particularly portable since it requires a PC for it's operation. Suffice it to say the 7300 has not been used in anger since the Anan arrived.

    Congratulations Hayden. I also recently bought the 7610 with the included SP41 speaker. I previously owned a IC-7600 from brand new, I also own a IC-9700 and the menus on both are very similar. I found the receiver to be quieter and slightly more sensitive than the 7600. I note the lan connection introduces birdies, an I am awaiting LAN filters from DX engineering which should be here any day. Reviews say the filters quieten it right down. I also ordered a 8 way voice keyer for contesting from them as well. The 7610 has a separate port to plug a remote keyer into the back instead of having to go into the menu to key it. Lots of videos on customising the bandcope. Overall VERY impressed, a great radio.

      The keyer is arriving today from DX Engineering. Cant remember the part number. Will let you know. Voice keying is standard on the 7610, and this is an outboard device with 8 switches that plugs into avrear port on the 7610. You could make one, the circuits in the 7610 manual

    Congrats!!! Have had mine since 2019. Also have a 890 as well. Love them both everytime I turn them on. I use two external speakers on 7610 and run both VFO'S separately or in stereo. Do not upgrade firmware to Japan 1.41 unless your running an amp. Not worth it imho. Don't listen to haters or brand loyalists. Run what makes you happy and imho the extra performance from Yaesu is not noticeable in real world. Ergonomic, waterfall customization with averaging, low power tune, and menu layout by Icom is superior. No CW encoder and SWR antenna analyzer like on 7300 are the only features missing. The knobs are the only real disappointment for rf gains, but you get use to them. Great choice and enjoy!! 73

I had my 7000 running all bands before but the 7610 is all over it. 7000 gets used as an IF radio for 23cms now and planning other things for it. Cheers and hope you have fun with it. Dale VK7DG

    I have the 7610 as well, purchased it back in February 2024, it was about the same price as my ICOM 775DSP I purchased back in November of 1999 (3K+). I also have the 7300 and the 9700. Fun times, the 7610 performance wise is heads and shoulders above the 775DSP. The only advantage the 775DSP has is the 200 watt PA section.

    Personally Hayden, I'm a Yaesu/ Alinco guy, Icom gear here in NZ is eye-wateringly expensive due to their single dealership that is really hard to deal with and will not help you with simple fault-finding, after sale.
    You also cannot import Icom gear into NZ and have any warranty on it, if it breaks down, so you have to send it back to the US.

    If some one can understand spanish, I have in my YT channel (AD4C) 35 tutorial videos(from #134 to #171) showing all about the 7610.
    And now with the new 1.4 Firmware, the 7610 has DPD (digital predistorsion) that cuts down more the IMD3 making its spectral purity like any Anan radio, -45 db, something you will never see in any Yaesu, Kenwood or even any other Icom.

      you're right, I don't understand why so many choose Icom, perhaps for a question of loyalty or to have the station all from one brand or because they advertise better there, something eye-catching on the front that they like better than what's inside, I don't understand ICOM is the leader in the top models, but they are unreachable and in some very recent particular products, when on HF Yaesu has always had an edge, Kenwood TS-990 from 2012 is better than Icom 7610 there is no doubt, but it costs even double, the comparison doesn't hold up, just as it doesn't hold up if we put it with a 7851 IC from 2015, but if we compare an old FT5000MP from 2009 it rivals the 7610 which is from 2017
