    I looked at the guide when he was setting up his instagram page and wasn't sure how inclusive it was going to be. 18 (approximate) minutes of you flipping through the pages convinced me. I just ordered one.
    I've compiled field guides on rite-in-the-rain paper for other "hobbies" of mine and I have an idea of how much work this was.

    I definitely feel that's a great concept as it's something I'd done when I 1st got my ticket (minus the different modules that I didn't think of at the time). Pricey, but I understand what goes into making such a project and wanting to pay yourself back for time invested. I'd suggest adding a package without the binder pricing (for individuals who already have a six ring binder), as well as a down-loadable package for similar cost. I didn't see a weather/SKYWARN reference module, so I'd suggest that as well.

    As someone that has done typesetting for commercial printing before, there is a LOT of hours that went into the formatting and design of these pages to get them to look the way they do, not to mention the information gathering.
    The Rite in the Rain paper for this size binder comes as 2 perforated pages on a carrier so the printer can feed it. That means each page has to be separated out and put in the binder by hand.
    It is also worth noting that for 110 pages and the binder, you are looking at about $35 in material, not counting the expendables for printing (toner, drum, printer wear and tear).
    So yeah, $100 is a bargain when you consider what all goes into this.

  • @RobertDurden
    @RobertDurden Месяц назад +1

    Just looking at the Binder and 1 pack of the printer paper to fit it (Same/Same Material wise) is over $75 US at Amazon. so yeah the Value is there, even if its a little hard to splurge to that level.

    I’ve been using a military flight crew checklist book for years. It’s not waterproof like this one, but it held everything that I needed for both EMCOM and my time in the military and never gave me any problems in the field, and while it was easily customizable I did have to keep it in a gallon size ziplock to insure that it was waterproof. But this book looks like it’s got some really good to know information in it that I didn’t even know to ask about so it’s a definite but for me. Thanks Josh!

That’s dozens of hours not shooting guns, hiking, mountain biking, taking photos, or learning new radio modes. $100 is absolutely worth it to me. Having said this, I served in the Signal Corp during 10 year tender in the United States Army and the book that he "created", minus the snazzy cover,... Can be attained at every battalion and brigade S6 in pretty much every unit in the army. If he served in the army please thank him for his service but to give a battlebuddy, a heads up. There's a lot of people that are going to be on to this. Maybe at the very least, a 100 bucks is A little steep for info that Is a few clicks away. As for me, I still have mine that I carried with me during all missions outside the wire in Afghanistan. I used it quite abit with TACSAT/HF/Blue Force Tracker and more importantly the simple key loader(SKL) procedure.

    (Edit for clarity) He could also sell it as a kit. It could be a virtual kit that includes affiliated links to the binder and rite in rain sheets and links to go find information or it could be a physical kit that includes the binder with some ham radio stuff on the inside cover and a pack of empty rite in rain half ring sheets for the do it yourselfers. The buyer can then “build it” themselves, researching information, assembling, formatting, and printing what they want on the pages if they have a laser printer. To me that time and effort isn’t something I want to spend. I would rather spend the $100.
    If it were something mass produced by a publisher using minimum wage laborers or outsourced over seas I am sure the price could come down.
    (Original message) He should sell it as a kit. That has all the materials that one could buy individually with affiliate links, links to all the websites with the publicly available resources. Then for the people whose time isn't money. Sure wish I had free time. They can build it themselves..... just going to all those sites to get the information and then formatting it all to fit that portable form factor makes this worth the price tag for me and the fact that I think you need a laser printer. If it were something mass produced by a publisher using minimum wage laborers I am sure the price could come down.

      It may sound like I am disparaging or being flippant towards those complaining about the price. I dont mean to be. I am thinking about my high school self and how much free time he had even though he didn't think he had free time. $100 very likely would be too steep for him especially for a hobby he is just getting into. I am not retired yet, but its a time I look forward to and I imagine that may be a similar scenario for me. Although I have heard retirees say they have less free time after retiring....

      You are being flip, and it’s obnoxious. When you were in high school, and you had any self-interest in something you would have built it yourself. Same with anyone else. Don’t be mad it’s $100, that’s selfish entitle bs. Just make it yourself.

    • @nehem11e
      @nehem11e Месяц назад

      Whoa I am not mad it’s $100. My message must not have been clear. For me, personally, it is definitely worth $100. Like I said in the first post just the time it takes to gather and put all that information in that form factor makes the price worth it to me.
      I recommended him also making it a kit so that for those who think it isn’t worth $100 instead of just saying “go build it yourself”. He can say here is the kit(or affiliate links) that includes all materials and all the public available links go build it yourself that way he gets a little more kickback.

    • @nehem11e
      @nehem11e Месяц назад

      You are 100% right that in Highschool I would have assembled it myself and if he had a group of links saying buy this this this and this (the materials) and another list of links saying here is where you can find the information to assemble yourself. I probably would have gone that route.
      If it isn’t clear I think he should sell it fully assembled ready to rock for $100 and then explore another option that those who think $100 is too much and say “I could do it for cheaper” here are my affiliate links for all the materials I used go for it make it yourself.

      There’s definitely a time vs. money component to items like this.
      Sure, you could make this for cheaper than $100, but I think it would take up a lot of free time gathering all the info, typing it up, formatting it, printing, laminating, and putting it in a binder.
      Personally, I’ve got way too many irons in the fire already, so the $100 is absolutely worth it to me. If you’ve got tons of free time then go for it.

      The amount of time it takes to complie something like this is not small. Think about it this way, what's your hourly rate at work? How many hours do you think it took to make this? Don't buy it fine, but don't complain about the price because this is a huge amount of info here and the time it took to compile it, proof read for mistakes then physically produce it. 100 bucks seems reasonable.

    • @Aramalas
      @Aramalas Месяц назад +4

      I don’t have one, nor have I ordered one, but I look at things like this in terms of “how much is my time worth.” How long would it take me to build the templates, find the information, and make it easily accessible? I’m a perfectionist, so building this would take me a lot of time. I’d rather spend $100 because my time is a finite resource. I can always get more money.

      @@HamRadioCrashCourse I realize and appreciate it takes time to correlate the info in this guide (but once done it's done) and to manufacture the guide (binder+printing, etc) however $100 per guide has to be generating a pretty steep profit margin. In my humble opinion, it's overpriced.
      I did make my own similar guide about 6 months ago and it only took a few hours worth of work to collect and format the publicly available data to my liking and put it in a binder. So I am not just giving an opinion, I am giving my experience too.
