    The FCC knocked on my door in much the same way. I was a novice (WN0JRV) operator with a vertical on the roof. They were tracking down aircraft band interference. We were a mile south of the ILS approach to Stapleton so in bad weather, there was a lot of aircraft traffic. They asked if I had any equipment on VHF which I did not. I even showed them the coax from the antenna was coiled up in the window well and was under leaves and other debris. They told me the frequency of interest and how it was a continuous carrier. I figured out right away who was the culprit. A neighbor two doors down was a private pilot and had an aircraft antenna on his roof. They went down to his house and had his wife unplug his aircraft radio, killing the interference. I knew it was him because the frequency was 10.7 Mhz below the control tower frequency at Jefferson county airport and the local oscillator was in the navigation aid part of the aircraft band. I was 14 at the time and they were amazed I figured it out. As a radio tech for a large metropolitan fire department, I know how the FCC is very protective of aircraft and public safety interference issues.

    Really the cable company should have been more on top of things. They (at least now) have a signal (usually at airband frequencies) inserted into the cable plant that they are able to detect with leakage detectors. And are required by the FCC to drive out and fix leaks caused by their system. It is crazy it got to the FCC first.

    I remember a tale from a Ham friend of mine where he started noticing a lot of "civil traffic" on his repeater, which sits at his home. Very weird and alarming chats there. He from time to time came on the air reminding them about license, FCC and stuff, not to avail. Then he noticed the traffic came obviously on the input frequency, but they were not actually using the repeater but the input frequency as a Simplex channel. Then, it turned out they were on a high elevation city, miles away, operating a drug sales point.... He then reported that. After a time, the operation ceased.

    Same thing happened to me. I used a 4 way coax distribution amp, but only used 2 connections. The other 2 were unused. A van kept driving by my house. My wife could hear beeping coming from the van as they drove by. They asked to come in, they did not remove it but added several 3 foot cables & splitters on the unused connections. I guess that attenuated the signals? But they could have easily used terminators. When I got home I just removed the amp and never heard from them again. They claimed it could interfere with the Aviation band.

    Let this be a WARNING to the use of signal high power amplifiers. To much amplification and they oscillate, big time. Add the amplification to a bad coax line (unsealed) and now you have a perfect antenna to broadcast your oscillation. In this case I think the oscillations covered a wide spectrum and acted like a military radio jammer. Always seal your coax connections, check them regularly. Make sur your amp doesn't exceed 10dBm amplification without a buffer between stages and use ferrites to numb out the rest. Nowadays there is a plethora of SDR which can be used as a spectrum analyzer to check your work. This way you don't have to listen for the knock on the door.

Could you imagine flying into New Jersey, and all of a sudden, after telling your crew to set up for final decent, a 90's TV show theme song plays for a blip? It was probably more like a crazy blip of static, but it must've been wide enough to be a problem.

      if you had them set for the legal power limits, I doubt there would be much attention given. @@DarkShadowCustoms Okay, I still don't think it would draw much attention, unless you were wiping out someone a couple miles away that you couldn't hear. I was just using a couple GMRS walkies on FRS channels, and they are already programmed to switch to low power on 8 through 14. I don't think the UV-5R has that programmed in. while the UV-5G, GMRS-9R and such do. We hear lots of whining about CCRs (Cheap Chinese Radios) but we are on UHF, so near line of sight only, and unless you are above the general altitude of the land around you, five miles is pushing the range at five watts. We did ten miles with no problem at five watts, but we could see each other's locations, as my brother in law was about 1,200 feet above the valley floor, at a lookout tower. And even IF someone decided to complain, you would probably only get a letter in the mail, or maybe your employer would if you were using them at work. I should really get my network analyzer figure out so that I can see if they put out any spurious radiation. I have a UV-5R and a TIDRADIO H-3 here that I could test, alongside my UV-5G, UV-5G Plus, GMRS-9R and TIDRADIO H-8 (GMRS type accepted it says on the back.)

    Ironically, the issue was indeed the amplifier. Amps for cable are not the same as amps for traditional VHF/UHF TV receivers. Very specific amps for cable are always configured as a combination of a 4 way splitter (with each a 7db drop which is then amplified) The TV antenna amplifier was specifically intended to boost the gain of the signals received from the loop or bunny ears they would be connected to... his amp was an airwave antenna amp, not a cable tv signal booster.

    Cable companies use frequencies that are on the air, such as aircraft, public safety, etc, and when there are no leaks, there are no problems. When RF leaks on a cable system, the cable company, it is the cable companies responsibility to correct this. This is usually done with a helicopter and receive gear. The FCC has shutdown cable companies until it is fixed. It can affect the not only phone but data. The FCC is right on anyone that interferes with aeronautical and public safety frequencies. They do not come in the middle of the night and if the problem persists, they will re-visit with US Marshals and a search warrant. This almost never happens except in cases or pirates that have been warned. If you aren't interfering with anyone, they don't care.

I hate to say this....but most of the time the "offender" brought it on themselves by doing something illegal that causes lots of interference to others. Don't run dirty junk amplifiers....don't run the mic gain wide open. Don't run some jacked up truck stop special into a multi kilowatt amp and they won't bother you.

    I keep thinking the fcc is gonna come knock on my door for connecting my cheap ht to an amp and antenna on 50' mast. The antenna was already here when I moved in. I asked what it was for and when he told me it was for ham, I went and bought a bfang and was given an amp. I got a tech license after the local guys figured out the 1 I was using was not me. I didn't know they could see where ppl live and it was a RUclipsr who is experienced and I was obviously new. Anyway I still only have bfang and the guys from the club know when I'm transmitting without listening. The say I'm the only high power bfang and they can see spikes on other frequencies that are larger than the 5w main from other bfang users a few houses away. Without the amp I can't talk to my friend at his house so I keep using it. He has a proper radio so I never have a problem hearing him.

    I do wonder how the supreme court would decide if someone took it to the supreme court as to the FCC's constitutional authority to exist. Give the Roe vs Wade decision, and the Constitution not mentioning communications at all beyond the 1st amendment, would result in a decision destroying the FCC's ability to operate as the Federal gov't had no authority to ever sign any radio related treaty, as they had no authority to regulate the airwaves(or anything else) at all.

    The only thing that I wonder - when so many government agencies have gone off the rails crazy at how they enforce things over the last 25 years, how long can we expect the FCC to continue to act at a reasonable and sensible level of enforcement?

  • @TWX1138
    @TWX1138 16 дней назад +3

    From what little coverage I've read on actual FCC enforcement, it sounds like most people that are strongly enforced against are either chronic or egregious violators. The one that immediately comes to mind was some jerk that was jamming either S&R or wildfire fighting or some other group in the northwest that was dealing with active situations out away from urban areas. Basically he was interfering with these public safety officials intentionally and willfully.
    So as for flack regarding notarubicon, he may not be wrong about his comments on FCC enforcement, but he's not someone that I care to interact with or to see at all. He lives to bait people, even on the GMRS forums for the service that he claims to support. He's not worth your time. He's probably even causing harm to the radio community through his attitude. Just because he's not wrong on that one topic doesn't mean that working with him will be beneficial to you or to your audience.

      @@HamRadioCrashCourse … Oh yeah, of course I watched the whole video. My question though was HOW would they know it was the cable TV amplifier without going inside the house, especially since he wasn’t a radio guy yet, and might not have even thought to mention it. The TV amplifier was “out of sight, out of mind”, right? I’m just wondering how they would have zeroed in on that particular device, when they hadn’t seen it, and when he wasn’t yet technologically knowledgeable enough to offer that up as a possible culprit…

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  11 дней назад +1

      I’m guessing, that at that time, maybe ten years ago, if the user didn’t have radios, the cable box would be the next question to ask. The FCC investigators do this as their jobs, so I assume they know what things to look out for. Assuming wires going into the basement from a pole could be an indicator as well.
