When I watch this all I think of is how much I wish there was still a Radio Shack with all these cool bits and pieces to go buy and play with!!
Radio Shack was cool. We can get all that stuff online and delivered to our doors today, but without the hands-on.
I think radio shack could have made it. They were a marketing juggernaut early but they lost their way. Imagine if they had little electronics classes. Selling a kids class to make a solar fan kit. Or an arundo class to make a controller.
How about a guitar tube amp kit class. I'd be paying that
Ikr.
We haven't had a radio shack for about 15 years.
But as i like to tinker with my radios an things i miss them alot.
This the single most helpful Meshtastic video on RUclips! Thank you guys 😊
Damn! Thanks!
This video is the one that made me finally go on amazon and buy biy biy
Don't wanna sound like the crazy "conspiracy theorist" that I am, but Meshtastic may prove to be much more that just another really fun part of our hobby. Reliable, encrypted networks, both local and regional, could prove to be invaluable if the worst should happen.
A fantastic video. Thank you, guys.
It's better to have it and not need it :D
@@HamRadioCrashCourse 👍
The fact that its encrypted is practically priceless. In an SHTF scenario, this would be one of my primary comms.
Meshtastic has really exploded in the past year, I'm seeing it everywhere now. Thanks to the devs for hanging out and answering questions, I had a lot of the same questions! Also the looser discussion hit on other things I was curious about too. The project has been around for a while now so just googling may not give me as up-to-date information as hearing it live.
This morning's [2/22] AT&T outage reawakened my interest in a backup communication network. I plan to dive into Meshtastic. Thanks for the education.
Fantastic!
Y'all need to stop showing cool stuff. My Lora collection is populating at warp speed 🤣
I was the one who put people on the waitlist.
Thanks bro i wont be able to get my first one until about april.
What should my 1st purchase be?!?!?!
Everything I've looked for this afternoon is out of stock and on a waitlist, so my checking account has not taken a hit YET. I've got a feeling the AT&T outage this morning is the red flag which will greatly increase interest and increase demand.
@@Metal_seerhahaha yeah… people are skeptical from the Big Tech:Big Brother Privacy Invasion, Emergency Broadcast Test in fall (Leave The World Behind??) + “Solar Flares” but that’s not what it was😉
Thanks guys for sharing! And it's wild cool that some of the devs interact on the discord like that. Hats off to Tony for putting out all those designs :)
I love the "minimal" setup some people use; they mount the Heltec V3 and its antenna directly into the plastic box they ship in.
Great stream! I'll definitely be watching this one a few more times when I get around to playing with Meshtastic.
The Comms Channel has great how-to videos on Meshtastic setups.
Just starting to get interested in this topic and this was a great discussion thanks Josh for pulling this together.
Man, this stuff is blowing up. I have 2 T-beams running in mini pelican cases with a couple 18650’s in parallel with power for days, but they’re not sexy. Awesome update here.
In suburban north Texas, around Dallas, we sure don’t get 1 mile of range. Getting nodes high is not easy.
Dang, was wondering about that. Also in suburban north Dallas, should have a node or two up soon
Years ago I went to Nepal into the mountains for 3 months every year. I was always thinking how cool it would be to set up Lora type comms up and down those valleys for the locals and for travellers. All sorts of people could use IOT there.
Any other Meshtastic users in SoCal? We have a pretty solid Discord server going connecting LA to SD
I second what @zodiaceng said
You guys can send messages all the way from LA to SD?
With hops. Currently casually connected from LA to Long Beach, Long Beach to Laguna and Laguna to San Diego on occasion. Working on getting nodes out on the islands.
I’m in SoCal. What’s the discord?
@@RiflemanLEONE what part of so called?
40:00 Can't get the GPS to be recognized. He mentions changing something else in settings but is talked over. Any idea on next steps.
Great video. I have been loving meshtastic. I wish the Mac App could talk to a TCPIP-connected node. I have a Router/Client node (Station G1) connected to MQTT. The webui is very lacking. Using the MacOS or iOS app and connecting over IP would be nice.
Ditch the toy and get PC and Android and your life will be so much easier.
@@Warhawk76 easier, and less satisfying. No thanks.
I didn’t like the small batteries for the T-Deck so I had my buddy redesign the back to hold two 18650 batteries. It did make the case chunky but battery life matters to me.
I am waiting on my T-deck to get here, there is a case out there already that lets you use a 8000ah battery that should be plenty for use with the lcd and adding in gps. Fix to those battery life issues.
Tony G is AWESOME
The multiband-antanna screenshot from the intro really made my day *GGGGGGGGGG
The tiny RAK antenna in the starter kit is woking flawlessly ~3 miles.
😂 you must have no trees around
@@NDSMD Very few. But is up high.
Great video guys...
I am just getting into this now..
For a base station
I would like to run it with my raspberry pi 4 or 5 ..
I hav a tower for my cb radio and my gmrs working on ham.
I have 900 mhz ht radios.
And 9element beams .
I'm experimenting with attaching a repeater to my drone as a means of range extending when under heavy canopy or when LoS is otherwise limited.
I dont think anyone mentioned the heltec wireless tracker. It has all the same hardware as the heltec V3. But has onboard GPS and antenna. Thats only about $2 dollars more than the V3.
1:00:57 The heltec wireless tracker GNSS PPS breakout pin is 36. If thats info is of any use
I agree, nice board but even more power hungry with its onboard GPS. Not a danger, just good to keep in mind!
@@tropho the nice thing is you can toggle the gps on/off with four taps on the user button or through the apps. So for me I just turn the gps on when I need it.
@@tropho It looks like I was wrong. I was monitoring current draw and it doesn’t seam to mater if gps is disabled or not. It draws 148ma ~ 154ma. So disabling gps is just in the software
The Heltec tracker sucks down power like no other tho. I have two of them.
All I have is a half dozen trackers and a couple of sicks to test right now. Whats the actual current draw on other devices with gps draw? Not what the specs say, but real world measurements.
Edit- I just pulled one of my heltec sticks (with screen: not the lite stick) from field to test the current draw, with the screen disabled draws 104ma~107ma. The stick utilizes the same chips as the heltec tracker and the V3. But does not have gps or screen.
After testing the wireless tracker a little more, there appears to be limitations in the newest firmware. Im unable to change any of the display setting, to get the screen or the GPS to sleep or disable it in an attempt to preserve power consumption. Hopefully the developers will eventually be able to employment a way to toggle these on and off in future firmware update.
I have a V3 on order now to be able to compare one of them.
In 90% of the real world use cases GPS seams to be a major feature. Im trying to understand what makes the wireless tracker undesirable compared to other meshtasic devices with on board gps?
Edit- If you leave the GPS enabled in app and redefine PIN_GPS_En to 35, That pulls the GPS reset and appears to disable the GPS module and drops current draw down to 128ma~138ma. To reenable GPS redefine PIN_GPS_En to 37.
I like that you can use a ham-only frequency, 430MHz or so, but I'm not interested in giving up encryption in order to do it. That's a no go for me.
Thats FCC rules. Stick with ISM band and retain encryption.
@@kevinfoster4862 Yeah, I understand the rules but I'm just saying for me it is a no go for that frequency. I am ridiculously adamant about my privacy and encryption. Amateur is different; it has a purpose and "my own personal comms" is not really it. So it's cool, just not for me for this purpose. Thanks :)
New to this, currently waiting for a couple Heltec V3’s to be delivered but I have a few questions.
Do different brands or chipsets work together, like is Meshtastic a standard protocol or do I need to keep everything ESP32 to communicate with each other?
Can I put one of these on my roof and just talk to whoever is in range like SWR, or do I need to “pair” or connect specifically to someone I want to talk to ahead of time like a cell phone? I’d be the only one that has these, and I don’t really need to talk to myself.
Follow up: will whoever is in range of my radio just automatically connect to it and use it like a repeater, or does YOUR mesh all need to be specifically paired with each other?
Why would I want GPS if I value privacy? Is there some functionality locked behind GPS? I see GPS mentioned a lot like it’s necessary, but it seems counterproductive for off-grid coms and I don’t want yahoos showing up at my house or geocaching for my stealth devices.
I seriously have tons of questions but those are the main ones I have prior to getting my hands on with one of these. I don’t like discord as their data is walled off from the rest of the internet and not searchable by search engines, so I’d prefer to talk here. Thanks!
Chipset / radio in the device not matter, all comes down to the channel config (and that you purchase devices with the correct ISM band for your region). By default any newly flashed device is on the same channel, which can be edited.
Wow, watching you guys I feel so dumb. Trying to learn with the limited time I can spend each week, glad for videos like this to keep me excited about learning. Retirement in a few years and this hobby stuff looks like it can be fun and reasonably priced
Link for the all in one case and rubber mounted feet from Amazon at 1:27:05 mark?
Of all the links in the description, what is the basic list of kit we need to get started?
i agree too- i like to know what i should get - lool like alot stuff is sold-out
Well done live stream. Really appreciate the devs going past the allotted time.
Id love to get into this stuff, I even have a TBeam.... I cannot get the drivers to work on any of my systems still. :D
Thanks for those replies, What is the best antenna to use for a LoRa at roof apex level. I'm looking for some gain and some robustness. Dipole, J-pole, and the basic whip antenna have come to mind, have you a better idea?
the antenna that you have on your device, do you have a link for it?
I was going to purchase a heltec v3 yesterday, but when I found out there may be improvements coming up soon, I figured I could wait just a little bit longer. Very enjoyable hour spent learning more about a topic I've been researching lately.
Improvements to the hardware?
@@MikeNHOCyes my interest is peaked
What makes you think there will be improvements coming soon?
Anybody else going to EDC in Vegas this year and wanting to implement this with their friend group as well?
I'm researching for this exact scenario haha
I am located in East Bay San Francisco. I have two Mestastic nodes: Heltec V3 & a T-Echo. Both are on the air. I can send and receive between my two nodes. The node lists on both are showing at least 12 nodes with strong signals. I try direct messaging; it always says "max retransmission reached". Should I be able to see traffic on my primary channel.? I see no traffic at all. Is there a way to message a specific node that you see on your node list through the mesh and not direct? New to this Mesh thing. Thanks. de. Bob
Boat club dinghy racing Use case. Rescue boat (4x) location and Anchored Mark Buoy (3x) location GPS coordinates on a Map to be viewed in elevated shore based start box for race management. No messaging as we use marine VHF. Coverage required is about 3km radius over the water. Daily use time 3 hours per sailing day. What meshtastic units to use for each location. Advanced Hobby level team can solder and configure. System will be donated so cheap and DIY is good.
I have a couple question for the Meshtastic system, 1. When you send an encrypted message is the message transmitted only over your groups node's or does it use any node within range. 2. can you use a node in your car/backpack as a mobile node? My goal is to connect my location to another location 150 miles away with secure comms. I apologize in advance if you have answered this question in your videos, I've watched so many the last couple days. KJ5AKF
Yes to both. Unless you set the repeater status different (as in not to forward everything) a node in your pack is going to expand the network. It may not get far but it will be part of the mesh.
thanks time to buy one or 10, LOL@@christianknight2905
There's one thing that's? Missing for sure is a windows application Mac application and Linux application for the mesh tastic. I can find it anywhere.
So if there is such a thing let me know and if there isn't there's reason to create it.
Will there ever be a way to send images? I have a ranch and being able to monitor various locations. Right now I am making solar battery powered WiFi mesh routers but they take more power and are so much more expensive.
Link for magnetic feet?
How does one keep the dog collar option charged?
So newbie LoRa question. When you set it up is there a way to require a key or password to hook up to it in bluetooth or can just anyone connect to it? I wouldn't want to invest the time and money to setup a neighborhood network only to be bogged down during a disaster and not be able to use it myself.
You use the QR code to share channels to devices. That’s all you do. With the code, you can’t get on the channels
Hooking up through bluetooth requires a key for the initial setup
Is it possible to buy the little keyboard device that looks like a Blackberyy all ready to work? If someone would put meshtastic in a dual band or GMRS HT it would take off like a rocket.
How would it work in a neighborhood? Can multiple phone access the mesh at the same time? If every house has one, will it overload the net with all the repeats?
Is there a way to rig a radio to AC/DC power?
3 hops max (3-10 miles each) is not gonna get you far. We live in a world where someone thousands of miles away is closer to you than your next-door neighbour. Ideally, in time Meshtastic should crowdfund orbiting a few satellites for direct intercontinental communication. The key is to come up with an efficient info sorting and routing algorithm - what is local, what is global, what is pertinent in a particular locale and particular group, what is specifically long-range and intended for specific recipient. It would be useful to take a look at how AIS is doing it.
The problem here is that the more hops you have the more overhead and bandwidth is needed. More hops means you have a very non linear growth in a dynamic routing table. And a lot of overhead for forwarding traffic. Also the more hops you have the greater the chance you can generate routing loops.
Would I get in trouble for using the Ham operator setup without a license if I only use it for emergency purposes (and testing for that use?). Doesn't the law allow for that use?
Waiting for a non ESP32 version of T-Deck for better battery life.
I want to make these for my cows!! So I can figure out where they are getting through fences!! Can they have a GPS fence? So they broadcast if they leave an area??
QUESTION:
Can you interface with Yolink sensors, hub ?
I'd like to know what sort of bandwidth you get on Meshtastic and if voice calls might be possible with the likes of codec2?
No. Voice is not possible.
Super curious about the TAK settings. I broke my brain last year trying to get ATAK to work over meshtastic and eventually gave up, waiting for some updates to fix my problems. I’ll have to dive back in, now …
That was the first thing I tried with meshtastic, and ATAK works great.. you just have to match up the Atak plug-in with the Atak firmware
I know, that’s what people have said, but I tried literally every combination that were documented to work for others in the forum and I couldn’t get it to work consistently. It was honestly making me crazy and I had to put it to rest for a while. I wonder if it had to do with the Android device I was using. I’m going to poke back into the Discord and see if anything has changed since last year.
Meshtastic is still very valuable as a secure texting and geolocation tool, and my devices work great for that, so I’m still happy.
@@SJV82whats the benefit over the usual meshtastic app? will the plugin work with any version of meshtastic?
HI VERY INTERSTING VIDEO I WAS WONDERING IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU HAVE TO DO AFTER WIRING IN THE GT-7 GPS MODULE TO THE HELTEC V3 WILL IT JUST WORK AFTER YOU'VE WIRED IT IN ?
23:51 AES128 is not always less secure than AES256. AES256 can be attacked with rainbow tables.
I need to add a full size keyboard and a larger screen in an outdoor ready package with enough power for 36 hours + run time.
How can we contact Tony G?
Discord. Or their website.
I'm in Little Elm (West Frisco) not too far from you and I see absolutely no traffic. No others showing up on the maps. Not sure what I've done wrong.
I’m 20 miles outside LA.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse oh wow for some reason I thought you were in the DFW area. My bad.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Mind is blown.. Your channel is the biggest reason I became a HAM I could have swore you were in the DFW area.. Feel like I just found out Santa isn't real.. lol
anyone know how to use the internal esp32 temperature sensor
How many multiple smart phones can connect to one nodes that on the network Wi-Fi for home and not use every single Lora for every single smartphone?
One at a time.
use wifi web
Don’t know if I missed it what’s everyone think about the Lilygo T-echo?
Does the t-deck work out of the box or does it need programming
They need programming.
Saw an article about Lora signals and cancer.. Is that a concern regarding kids and dogs?
No. The frequency of LoRa isn’t high enough to cause cancer.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thank you--I had almost put together a counter argument myself :) You do a great job.
If I buy a meshtastic device, what is it's likely hardware lifetime? Meaning how long will it take for system upgrades to make one hardware unserviceable? I was planning to leave a meshtastic somewhere high, with solar and batteries.
pretty sure they would have to change the communication protocol for a device to become obsolete. which they wont...this isnt Apple
I think it would be like any other radio, you can still use models that are decades old that work fine.
Is it safe to assume that all the settings from the phone app are settable and can be defined EXCLUSIVELY in the T-Deck? and if not.... wtf
No. Almost nothing can be set on the tdeck. It’s a very limited, stripped down device.
WV here.
MD didn’t take that from us…..we didn’t want it and we gave it to you.😂
And what's with voice? Can you use voice with mesh tastic?
I don't knowcan you use a voice with?
It's tastic just a texting thing and that's so appealing if you can add a voice communications to it. Hell? Yet I'll be very good.
"Big Lora" lol
Hi Josh, I might be looking for an attorney who can represent me in front of the FCC in case they deny my license because I answered YES to the first question on the application. I know you are hella busy with your YT channel, but I PLEASE ask you to not ignore me. So please reply, and tell me how I can take our conversation private. I put a lot of effort in my work to build an AI to help predict band openings by swallowing info on Sun activities, weather, seasons and other criteria that affect propagation.
I have no Personal knowledge about how to proceed this area. I’ve never experienced it myself.
😊😊👍🏼👍🏼
If you mesh tastic doesn't have voice then they need to add it. We need to add voice communications to messed to mesh tastic that's all. I gotta say anyway see you guys later. Make sure that guys at mesh tastic know. They. They got a voice communications to their mesh testi.
Devices anyway? I don't have a see you guys later.
can you run cameras over this?
I dont ubdersrand how these are emergency radios when it sounfs like 90% of them require repeaters ans stations to be up ans running to use them
These small units ARE the repeaters. They mesh to themselves, all off grid.
I'm curious how many radio clubs are getting into this and adding them to their infrastructure. That's going to be key to getting mass adoption.
1:37:00
In a disaster texting is not fast but voice communications is if the law really wants to be successful you will have to include voice communications because it is. Astor voice communications is always quicker than a text.
Did not everyone can type 250000 words per minute or even 12 words per minute? I know I can't pay can you? You have to be a new have to be a real typist. You have to be a real real typist to be altered.
Type.
Anything and you have to have real skills that I've keyboard so in an emergency voice communications. Is always King which means the Laura will have to start having voice communications to be successful?
Anyone in NY Westchester/putnam county want to start a meshtastic group?
Hmm.
🧐
This is talking my language
I'm just going to be a naysayer about Meshtastic sure people are going mad about it, but at the end of the day for most people, it will be nothing more than a vehicle for SMS, people will get really bored with it really quick, in five years it will be forgotten
It’s an ideal solution when your sms network suddenly goes down - I.e. ATT SOS day
this feels like gatekeeping to a regular person
Meshtastic is proprietary and closed source fwiw.
It would be great to establish open standards and let anyone build/sell devices and software, if that is not currently the case. [ I heard "Meshtastic for the first time 10 minutes ago, so please correct me if this is not an issue.]
Let's say my friend and I have 10 nodes between us and we want to chat. Are we SOL? My messages will only hop 3 nodes then fizzle out and my friend, 7 more nodes away, never gets the message?
That type of technical question is best asked to the Meshtastic Discord team.
GPS is indispensable. I take my Radtel rt-490 to every trip and every sail just for that function alone and it has helped me in real life scenarios. Being able to locate yourself on a paper map is crucial!! Yes, it drains the battery, that's why you have a switch and switch it on when you need it, say every hour and only for a short while to obtain your position and mark it on a paper map or marine chart.
can meshtastic send crypto?
Send the Crypto like the keys? or can you send encrypted messages?
Mesh tastic doesn't have voicewhy can I not send a voice message over mesh tastic?
