    We got 8.7 miles between 2 nodes yesterday with successful communication with the stock antennas. One node was in town in a fairly dense area and one node was out of town, just barely above roof line. Going to try and get 14 miles plus out of them tonight!

    I remember when to get more range you had to contact someone with an alias on the radio. Then go wait at the truck stop with cash in a envelope for someone to show up with your linear amp that may or may not work

    I’ve tested many 915 MHz antennas using a VNA. Most are junk and are not resonant at 907 MHz, which is the default channel. A simple dipole trimmed for resonance works fine. There are quality antennas out there with gain that work great and I routinely get 40 to 50 miles with nodes that have the better SX1262 radio chip. But remember the whole purpose of the mesh is to pass packets in hops between other nodes.

    Thanks for the heads-up on the AliExpress antenna's! Found the model for 5,72 (euros) each and paid just 16 for 2 antenne's and two pigtails. There are practically no nodes where I live and it's a very hilly province so I hope to be able to eventually get some solar powered repeaters on the roofs of flats/high buildings :D

    - for carring with me: t-echo with lynx dipole antenna
    - for powered setup on the roof of the home placed on top of the hill: rak wireless with hydra board and Rockland antenna
    - for car mounted one: t-echo with magnetized monopole antenna
    I'm not sure if I understood you correctly. Is this a good choice or would you do something different?

      This one is the first generation, which is very affordable and works well. The new V2 line is even more capable at a higher price point.
      I recommend sourcing one from one of the official vendors to avoid purchasing dubious clones that may not give you consistent or accurate measurements.

    I've yet to get 1 mile of range in a residential area. Even with a lynx antenna.

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  Год назад +6

      You've made a good step switching to a well tuned antenna. Now try getting one of your nodes as high above the ground as possible. This can make a huge difference in achievable distance. Two devices a few feet off of the ground will generally not achieve very much distance in urban / sub-urban environments.
      Also if you're on SX1276 based devices, as mentioned in the video, I recommend upgrading to SX1262 based ones and setting the lora.sx126x_rx_boosted_gain config. It makes a considerable difference in my experience.

    This very subject has prevented my purchase so far. I need 5-6 miles range with some tree obstructions and no buildings over 2 stories point to point. My elevation is about 50' above family members I'd want to communicate with in an emergency. Per your coverage map, one other mesh device exists within 30 miles. Would I be able to achieve comm with an add-on antenna?
    Edit...why are these units not sold fully assembled?

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  4 месяца назад

      We do not have a coverage map. There is a map that is passed around that is all user-generated data. This data is at best unreliable. 30 miles is definitely doable with proper line of sight.
      These devices are off-the-shelf devices adapted to our use-case. There are community members that sell fully assembled devices if you'd like though. You can search "Meshtastic" on Etsy.
