What is Meshtastic?
Meshtastic® is a project that lets you use inexpensive LoRa radios as a long range off-grid communicator for areas without reliable cellular service. These radios are great for hiking, skiing, paragliding - essentially any use-case where you don't have reliable internet access. Each member of the mesh can send and view text messages and enable optional GPS based location features.

There's a slippery slope to subscription slop - your resolve will be tested. Please be steadfast.
Cool .... But bad idea Meshtastic. Think before posting.
I've been hoping for official hardware.. An official multi antenna static relay would be great. I'd love to install 3 directionals on a pole for coverage managed by a single piece of hardware.
Is there a way for third party consultants to get involved?
Hi -- Nothing formally yet. If you'd like you can submit a contact form on the meshtastic.com website.
I reached a user out in Oregon and I’m in Idaho so that’s neat!
Very cool!!
Please notify me when the lawn mowing and car washing modules become available.
This is awesome.
Great idea. Can't wait to see what you put out.
Where can I get further information on the Backers Programme? God bless.
More info will come soon!
As much as I like supporting developers, something about this feels off.
Care to share more?
@@Meshtasticmaking money off of the work of volunteers I guess I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't have contributed if they knew that there was going to be a for profit company with a significant sway on the project
This sounds like a classic open source model to me.
So basically the same thing that 3dRobotics did back in the day. Just make sure you leave Chris Anderson out of the project.
Are you aware that the FCC is looking at selling the 900 megahertz.
We filed an official opposition back in August. meshtastic.org/blog/meshtastic-opposition-to-nextnav-proposed-changes/
Someone should let Nick Mullen know his long lost bro is right here
I’m hoping that any enhancements made by Meshtastic Solutions to the software will find themselves into the open source repository and firmware releases.
Oh you bet they will! Meshtastic wouldn't be in our name otherwise.
Ahh good, consolidation of the vendors. This is great news.
Awesome!! Anything that helps the Meshtastic economy grow is excellent for all of us!
I hope you will find a good integration through Home Assistant that will add new sensors, becoming an alternative to Zigbeee, Z-wave, etc.
Agreed with this! I can't wait for stronger Home Assistant integration. While MQTT works, it's sloppy and not intuitive
Wow! Can't wait for you guys to take off.
Question: Say you have 2 friends, and you have connection to one, but not the other, but your friend has a connection to both you and that other friend. As a result of the mesh, would you be able to see both of their positions on the ATAK map since technically you should be able to reach that other friend by way of a bounce through your other friend, or do you have to have direct contact? Another example that comes to mind is setting up a repeater node, and having 2 people who are connected indirectly via that repeater, would they still appear on your ATAK map and be available for messaging?
That's the whole idea of Meshtastic, yes. Your Client relays the information as you shout "I am Knights House Games, I have this position and that data, repeat 3 (standard, up to 7 maximum - but 3 is enough!) times!" And then it is a sophisticated form of chinese whisper ...
@@miller_de I know thats the general theory of the Meshtastic system, I am just wondering if that carries over to the ATAK map and messaging system as well through the plugin
@@knightshousegames As it uses Meshtastic ... yes. Meshtastic is just you "network". Nothing else. How it works isn't important as long as info will be received by anyone.

Attempting to flash LilyGo T-Beam S3 Core. Flash starts but will not complete. It hangs up at, "waiting for download". If I press RST button (as the website instructs), the USB connects with a different COM port and will not finish. If I RST, BOOT, Release RST, Release BOOT, it connects with the correct COM port but still says, "waiting for download". Anybody have any ideas?
The BOOT button is the one you want to hold down (meshtastic.org/docs/hardware/devices/lilygo/tbeam/#flashing) You an also use the 1200bps reset button on the flasher. Some have reported that their device will only flash if it not attached to the supreme carrier board also.
Sounds like a good candidate for an open/close/status? garage door openner.
Do the sender and receiver have to be set to the same modulation preset in order to exchange messages? Can a receiver demodulate inbound messages of any modulation preset on the same slot?
Antennas: Do test your antenna and device. I purchased a tbeam from the lilygo store on Aliexp and the antenna has an SWR of 4.1 (and higher) on the 915MHz band and the device output power was below spec for the 1276. Don't recommend. My backup plan: bought a couple of Heltec's with 1272 radios.
I keep getting notifications on my tablet, but they only stay for a couple of seconds, i didn't know what the notifications were, i finally caught one notifying me of a new node Is it possible to make the notification stay for a bit longer to give me time to sit forward and focus, maybe a minute or so ?
Both iOS and Android keep notifications until dismissed usually. There's a brief notification banner or alert displayed on the screen but then it moves to the Notification Draw/Center. developer.android.com/develop/ui/views/notifications support.apple.com/guide/iphone/view-and-respond-to-notifications-iph6534c01bc/ios
Awesome. Is there a way to connect a computer running Win-TAK and a meshtastic LoRA device to an existing meshtastic mesh-net?
We're not aware of any native Win-Tak integrations. But there are options like OpenTAKServer which you could integrate to Win-Tak and likely achieve what you are looking for.
Make a video! How to make that
Great video and straight to the point.
Any support for RAK2245 hat??
Unlikely we'll be able to support any of the RAK hats because they're SX1302s (lorawan concentrators).
For people that want to play with their own MQTT server, could you run one on the Pi itself? I don't see why not, I'm just wondering how you'd give it the address or IP. Does meshtasticd understand other network interfaces of the Pi and could I just tell it "localhost" from the app? Either way I'm getting ideas that usually result in a not insignificant drop in funds, heh heh heh
Yes, there are folks that are running a mosquito instance on the same Pi as their Meshtastic setup.
Where is the code, please?
This has been baked into the firmware for quite some time now: github.com/meshtastic/firmware
you looked like a flight attendant at @1:48 with don't turn it on without....😂
can you add so you can flash the circuit mess chater 2.0
We likely won't be adding that to the flasher since it requires a hardware mod for full support. The radio that comes with it is unable to use the default settings.
My use case is for dinghy sailing race course measurement. My nodes are mounted on anchored floating buoys. I want accurate high precision locations. I have set up a private network to map the locations of the buoys and the safety boats and in due course the boats sailing on the course. What would be really useful is an additional distance measurement in "nautical miles" = 1 minute of lattitude. And an option for speed in " knots" = 1 nautical mile per hour.
That's a very limited use-case so it might be better for you to customize the firmware and build yourself. Not saying this won't get added but it's unlikely for now. I would start a discussion on our Github. github.com/meshtastic/firmware/discussions
How do you update meshtastic on the Pi Zero 2. I installed it from this video back when you released it and it's not updating with the system.
You can install the latest .deb from the releases: github.com/meshtastic/firmware/releases We also have an experimental debian repository as well: meshtastic.github.io/
Go is great, though unfortunately it isn’t quite as performant as Rust.
when are you releasing the build video?
That check box is deceptively hard to find. I must have glanced over it ten times while looking for it, haha
Do you have to have a CalTopo Team subscription to use this solution?
Yes. The solution requires CalTopo desktop / SARTopo
Been ryig to find an answer without success, thought i would ask here I started setting up a node, tablet connected to it, but my own fault i couldn't get into it (wrong password) I set it aside for a while I decided to do a complete reflash, this time i did it right But now i have 3 nodes, 2 are correct, the other i can't find a way to delete, online says something about finding the coloured name, but without a password being set, i don't think it got that far, it only shows up in the last tab as wifi-5290, step by step, how to delete, thanks.
Thanks Ben 👍
So cool! Imagine if we had this in the 90's. No need for the telecoms.
I'm excited this is able to run on native linux. Have had a HopeRF RFM95 module collecting dust for a few years and just got Meshtastic set up on a Rpi 3A+ with it. I don't yet have another device to test with but seeing some traffic from nearby nodes!
Why haven't you addressed the FCC considering NextNav's proposal affecting Meshtastic?
Hello! Sorry, you must have missed it. We actually launched our blog specifically to address this, and we posted across all of our social media platforms. You can read the blog here: meshtastic.org/blog/meshtastic-opposition-to-nextnav-proposed-changes/
@@Meshtastic That's how I found out about it, but why wouldn't you address it here?
Because we decided to utilize a blog post for it.
@@Meshtastic no worries, someone else made the videos
Lots of good advice thanks

Can I do the atak over wifi or Bluetooth?
Is it distance or is it RSSI? They are not the same thing.
"Distance" is an easy way to think of it, algorithm is actually mostly based on SNR (and RSSI for an edge case where SNR is 0). All things being equal, in the ideal environment, Distance and SNR would be related. Real world says they're not that's why it's built on SNR.
I wish we had a Meshtastic compatible LORA PHY that could run on GMRS frequencies. 1w-2w would make a massive difference!
Please email me, I'm curious about your use case: jm@meshtastic.com .
