I have a President Lincoln II + and it is actually a very good radio. I do have mine expanded but you get to change modes so it can still be HAM bands only when you want it that way. I've made several contacts with this radio and always got great audio reports. It is in fact FCC certified however once you open it up that changes things obviously . I got mine when they were 249$ but they have since become more popular and went up in price. I highly recommend it. Lots of great features and a solid radio from President. 73.
in order to use it on 11 meter it has to be Part 95 Subpart D certification. of course most people do not go by that as they use illegal amplifiers to boost power
I have a Lincoln as well, it's my go to for POTA as of late. I too always get compliments on the audio.
I had the President HR2510, the radio shack 10 meter iirc was a sister radio to it. The Lincoln was the export version, uniden got in trouble with the FCC over the 2510 and the fix was the HR2600... The Lincoln 2 is the next gen of those radios
Hello, I have the Anytone AT-5555 and the AT-5555n which I purchased from the UK.
Yes, they're both moded for frequency and not much else by a licensed Ham. Other than that they're both OEM.
I remain comfortable in the 11meter band. (26.8250 - 27.6550)
My radios are factory other than the bands.
Amateur radios are simply better built, like Rx and Tx filtering for quieter QSO's.
Paired with good coax and antenna the Anytone quality of electronics is really hard to surpass.
Ive been into 11meters since age eleven in the BSA and got my Merit Badge for Radiotelephone.

Hey, now that I'm old, I've gave consideration to getting my Tkt. Your videos are very persuasive. Especially with no code to learn.
Anyway, YES Anytone has good quality gear.
Thanks for the vids and knowledge.
Hi, great video, you mentioned while talking about the President radio about part 97 allowing modifying and experimenting. Where in part 97 states that? Thanks for the help.
Have two radios on your list, love them both TYT 9800, and xiegu G90, met you two years ago at quartzite ham fest, and you had never heard of Lubbock Texas before, LOL 😂😂😂, good videos 73s, AI7VS, clear.
I think you're mistaking me for someone else. My wife went to college in Lubbock and we've been there many times
The tidradio h3 is definitely one to mention, it has a lot of features for such budget friendly radio. Bluetooth, usb-c charging, usb-c programming, compact, am band, and more.
Yup. It’s getting ignored by most but solid little rig. Also field programmable via phone app.
Garbage compared to $20 quansheng uv k5. Way way way more features than that and is being added to daily by the fact you can load and flash custom firmware. Don't buy any radio that cannot be flashed in 2024.
@@rfcdgaf those will remain few and far between, unfortunately. As will the number of hams even capable of coding those special firmware loads. I never said anything bad about that rig.
My first time seeing them today when I was looking up these radios, but apparently there’s quite a few repeaters available on Amazon. It’d be interesting to see a video on.
Thank you for consistently putting out interesting and useful ham radio content! Much appreciated! I'd like to offer a suggestion if you don't mind. Something I noticed on the older videos that still happens. Your audio quality is great and punchy but you need a pop filter and not just a windscreen on the mic. Try one of the flat screen types that goes in front of the mic. The sponge layered ones are supposed to be fairly transparent to the sound. Thanks for a great channel!
Nice video from HT up to the G90. I have a couple of them. Gotta love the G90. I own a G90, it’s a fun radio to own. Simple to use, works great with the XPA-125B amplifier.
Never heard of the UV-21r and assuming its another version of the UV17. May look into it. But I'm waiting for the G90 to go on sale. Another good radio Jason is the ANYSECU WEP9900 with all the controls on the microphone in color. at transmits up to 25 watts on VHF. R/L has it for 124.95 but I got mine on Amazon for about the same price back in Sept and now its 115. Great little mobile dual band with a Moonraker mag mount antenna.
I have been using the Anytone AT-778UV as my VHF/UHF radio in my shack since I first earned my tech license - it is a solid radio that has given me absolutely no problems - I would definitely recommend it to others.
It is also programmable with CHIRP, so I can have the same channels there as with my UV-5R and other radios.
Yep, those are good.
Thank you!
I am currently considering getting this model. In this day of many AI generated "reviews." Your feedback is what I've been looking for.
I love that radio. For some reason though I was unable to get it to connect to my PC to program with chirp. Not sure if it was the cable or something else. But I’ve gotten pretty good at doing everything from the front panel.
I have this radio, also. And the BTECH 50X2. Both have been great radios. Have used them for about 5 or 6 years I think.
I have the same radio labeled as a Retevis RT-95.
The baofeng dm-1701 is a good one. I would reccomend doing the open gd77 mod on it right away though. It gets you into dmr in the under $100 price range, and with the open gd77 mod it's fairly easy to program with lots of contacts and channels. You probably won't find a cheaper handheld that can do digital mode and analog on both 2m and 440.
I have 2 Baofengs, 1 Yaesu FT10, Anytone 778UV, IC 718, and a Radio Shack Dual Band Mobile (1996). The HT's are great for sitting in the garage and hit a repeater about 15 mile away and talk all over the county. The AnyTone will be installed in the car, the rest are in my room. I have had real good luck talking on the AnyTone. I probably have too many, radios but how many should one have?
appreciate your time, As I am just studying to get my tech, Thus i have just started looking for a radio at the same time i want want one I an grow into and not end up having to buy another on in a few months. Also thank you for doing the you tube class I have been watching it as part of my studying.
Glad I could help
Thanks for all your content! I'm still studying for my license, but getting close to feeling confident to take the test.
Best of luck
Great video, thanks for the run-down on those radios.
You bet
Great Review as always. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great video. One item that is about the same importance to me is the availability of a AA battery holder. This is a great option to have during a long term power outage.
I’ve worked a station in Bulgaria before on 10m using my G90. I’ve reached Ireland, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, and countless contacts all using my G90. It’s an excellent radio.
I really like the Revis Rt95 that I got from Amazon. I’m pretty sure it’s the same radio as the Anytone 778 uv just rebranded under Retevis. Nice video
look to see if it has a "jumper" you can cut, or put a simple switch in to use it on 11m. if it does it may be one to avoid.
Nice lookin radios, usb is Awsome! Tnx Man.
Great video, thank you very much for the info.
Glad it was helpful
I have the Anytone AT 5888UV2. It is a great radio. Also has removable head so you and have the control head on a mount and put the radio under the seat or in the back of your vehicle. I always get excellent audio reports and the receive is great. I run mine mobile. It also does out of the box work on GMRS. I know I know not "legal" but it is a nice alternative to the much more expensive Wouxon GMRS mobile radios.
I have two of the Radioddity GA-510 and love the power output it has I can hit a Repeater 55 miles away with a mobile Dual Band Antenna. 73 K4BWN
I have 4 as my family radio kit
@@MrSchmylee They are a heck of lot better then the first HT I ordered the UV5R because it sucks
Hi the Baofeng UV-18 Pro Max is also nice. Has air, vhf, 220, 350 and uhf, 999 channels, 10 Zones, USB C charging, GPS, color screen, customizable sound effects for different functions.
One of the cool features of the GS-5B is it can scan local radio activity and identify the frequency. Pretty cool if someone is using one of those Rugged channels and you don't have it programmed. I keep mine in a go bag because it can be programmed via phone, is USB-C chargeable, and the frequency scan feature.
Yep
I have the baofeng UV-21-R and I absolutley love it over my UV-5R. Dont hesitate to buy it folks.
For my house I would buy a new or used 50w Japanese radio, but to carry in the car without a doubt a small anytone or btech from Amazon. Could you make a video of used movile radios? I have an ADI AR146 and it is really excellent for being a copy of Kenwood
I'll look into it
one thing about the baofeng HT`s i got 2 way back in the beginning and 2 within last year and now all but 2 battery is dead/shorted and will not charge HT`s are fine still. Battery's suck bad.. now i also have a wouxun KG-UV2D and the battery's are great but the HT is bricked and no supports for it any more not even chirp covers programing for it now. have to manually inter a freq to receive only so keep this in mind for long term.
I got a BAOFENG AR-5RM about a month ago and the BAOFENG K PRO MAX both are nice (and do 10+w) but the battery life is eh.
Great video, wish my Ailunce HD1 would have made the list of HT’s.
Good choice!
I have the little brother to the B-Tech 50x2, I have the B-Tech 25x2 and love it. KO4HPC 73 all.
Good choice
what mic and antena do you recomend for tyt th9800? i installed my radio in my jk...
I put a piece of blue tape over the mic pickup holes and pierce the tape once over one hole you covered. That calms it down enough to work well.
I bought a qyt kt-8900r. Tri bander. They're less than $80 and a pretty cool little radio
I have a GS-5B. Great radio, ONLY issue is fix the display so you can see it outside during daylight
HT - Retevis RA89 - Love mine!
I saw you hit on the BTECH UV-50X2 but didn't mention the UV-25X2 dual band or more significantly the UV-25X4 triband . I have both. I get as much as 30 watts output. They're not top notch but dang good radios for the price.
Jason: What are the most useful VHF/UHF repeaters in the DFW area?
Love my ANYTONE. First I have heard of a new battery that is USB-c chargeable. Where can I get that battery?
ebay.us/8mw1qM
I love the fact that you do nice neutral reviews with no hatred of CCR's like all the sad hams and radio Karens out there. Here's my take:
Anytone/Tech 878 and clones: Had 3, all returned because of abysmally poor squelch sensitivity, 'Feng blows it away. UV21R: Nice radio but why, oh why didn't they make the side buttons programmable!? Would've been perfect. GS5R: I don't use mine because of the horrible long squelch tail. Makes listening a chore, shame 'cause I like it otherwise. UV5R: not fond of looks but they "just work!" In my rural area they work fine. Quansheng: #1 winner, looks great, great receive audio, most importantly-honors reverse burst on PL so there's no squelch tail at all. I have 3 and they're great.
Thanks
I want to know where you got the battery for the Antone 878 that is USB-C chargeable…

@@HamRadio2thx
5 baofengs, I keep them around to give away to kids interested in ham radio. 2 anytone 878s, one anytone 778, TYT 900D for 220 and a Tidradio H3 on the way, all Amazon. I think the H3 should have made the list. UsB C and smartphone app programming.
For the price of all those you could have bought one good, serious radio that is better on receive and doesn't emit spurious signals on transmit.
@@markr.1984I own plenty of "serious" radios, the Japanese radio companies are 20 years behind with their features. Chinese radios come with: extra antennas, desktop charger, programming cable, wall wart all in the box. The USB has the ability to make programming cables and chargers obsolete. Not one Japanese radio has that.
Yes, the Japanese companies are slow to catch up with some of the features we like (usb c charging, programming, etc)...but they still make vastly superior radios. I have a handful of 'high end' Chinese hts and mobiles...and none of them are on par (rx/tx) with many 25 year old yaesu's, icoms, or kenwoods.
Maybe I'm still living in the dark ages (I do still have a vx-7r in my plate carrier afterall)...but my ft3dr, ftm500r, and 991a do EVERYTHING I need to do EXCEPT dmr...which my btech handles just fine. And, I'm pretty sure they will all be functioning AND supported 20 years from now.
I'm not knocking the Chinese stuff, I use and enjoy them. But let's be honest here, they aren't built as well, don't sound as good, and are generally a tier below their (admittingly more expensive) Japanese competition.
@@jonathonschram3429 The Japanese radios are cleaner and sometimes work better for certain use cases. I would not say they are necessarily built better. I have been burned by them ending support for radios. Icom and Yaesu have done this to me. The Baofengs are junky feeling radios, but most of them except some early and counterfeit ones are clean. This silly little radio is responsible for a lot of new hams. They sold a lot of them. I can honestly say no ham radio that I own can outperform my Anytone 878. It’s the one Chinese radio that is built very well. I really wanted to hate it after I bought it but it’s now my go to radio. It lacks usb c programming but usb c batteries are now available for it. The Chinese stuff may not work as well, which is subjective but they certainly work good enough. 73
I saw where you were talking about the 11 m Lincoln Radio I see videos of how operators where they've got a 11 m Radio in the vehicle beside they're amateur radio with a 11 m linear amplifier beside it advertising how far they can talk with a CB radio with a high power output is that not taking chances of losing your amateur radio license and being find a big whopping ticket. 73
I have been looking at the TYT TH9800D. What is the difference between the 9800 and 9800D?
The non-D isn't made anymore. I don't think there's many differences
if you do a rt-890 review. you should try the custom firmware. adds a spectrum analyzer and almost triples the scan speed.
Nice
Pretty sure that anytone 10m radio that you're talking about is just a striker in different clothing. I have seen the lids off of both of them and they look identical. Look up a Stryker 955 and then the anytone and I think you will see that they have the same boards. I'm quite sure that they are running different software though. Even their power meters are nearly identical in look.
Due to what's going on in the US lately, I'm interested in getting into ham. I'm unlicensed and needing something cheap to start with. Would the Tidradio TD-H8 be a decent choice? I'd like something that could pick up police and emergency channels. Any input would be great. Thanks for the video. Very informative.
Lots of police and emergency services have switched to encrypted or trunked radio systems, which are really designed not to be monitored. Some still have ham bands. This depends on your local area. You can likely find this information online if it is compatible with ham bands.
That radio looks pretty great. Might be difficult to get started with something other than the normal radio people buy.. But it's probably not that different. Features are great. Bluetooth programming built in, extra channels, more features, 8 or 10 watts? Good bet.
@phil2082 Thanks for the info and help. Much appreciate it.
Could you try one of the wolf 100w hf/vhf/uhf radios..seem a little expensive but full of fetures
Yeah I want to get one of those but they're pricey
@@HamRadio2 iv just been looking on bangood and aliexpress, but i can only find the 20w vertion...they must have sold out lol
What about the Wouxun KG-UV920/980 or the Alinco's?
You can find both of those for better prices than Amazon has
The Ranger RCI 2950 family of radios work well on 10 & 12 meters and is a good choice or a tech that wants for work 10 meters.
I would have included the quancheng uv-k5. With the third party firmware it's a crazy flexible radio.
I did - literally the 2nd radio I spoke about
@@HamRadio2 sorry I must have been distracted momentarily.
Edit: Rewatching. Yup I saw the uv-5r and tuned out a little too long :P Nothing against those in general just not interesting to me.
Thank you for the videos and the information. I was wondering if you would do a video on all the US radios. I would like to learn more and get feedback from someone other than myself. Thank you again for all you do.
Radio made in the USA, you mean? I did that about 3 years ago, this list is still up-to-date in 2024
ruclips.net/video/PX9qYxfOtjk/видео.html&ab_channel=HamRadio2.0
I live by the mountains….any help for better reception?
Get the antenna up as high as possible
I have a tidradio H-8 that I use and like
We are an elderly couple. We are watching your video of course, we are confused. We would like to have something to stay in touch in case of emergency with people in other cities and towns. And see what's going on, we don't necessarily need walkie Talkies, because we would always be together. Can you tell us what we should buy? Thank you.
I've recently bought the Baofeng gt5r and it's a lot better than I thought. No issues as of yet.
Expanding my horizons is why I'm here. Someone needs to make a video on "Here's a list of good handhelds that are not Baofeng."
Cause just searching "most popular" "most sold" you still end up getting Baofeng mixed into the list.
Price aside, what are people actually using that's well designed, little to no issues reported, connects to repeaters and transmits perfectly fine.
What is the flagship (non-Baofeng) radio?
Pretty much answered that here
ruclips.net/video/LLIxRV_a_R0/видео.html
I'm new to radios. I have a couple Baofeng 17L's, the Baofeng AR152 and a btech GMRS pro. I like them all. But, i'm an idiot when it comes to HAM radio. You guys have taught me quite a bit.
Oh yeah, I've tried a few different antennas as well.
Thanks for watcing
@@HamRadio2 thank you for taking the time to teach and give solid reviews!
The G90 is my dream radio (for now) The TYT quad band radio is on my "list". I have a receive only radio that I like as well. I do not expect it to be on your list, but it is a 'front porch" radio. that means I can take it anywhere, use a receive only antenna and show my family and friends what short wave can be without limiting the new people to ham radio only. Get them interested in something other than "top 40 FM"
Good choice!
Just trying to be prepared….. looking for a home base unit and a mobile unit. Ease of use and distance is most important. Learning as I go.
I have some videos about that
Tell me about this high capacity usb-c Anytone battery please!

@@HamRadio2 Thank you sir!
The 220 band is making a comeback in my area. You probably did not include the TYT TH-9000D Plus 1.25M Amateur Radio on your list because 220 is not the most popular band but it is a good radio, and one of the few full power monobanders for this band. Try it. You'll like it !
I've been using 220 for 10-15 years. We have some good repeaters in this area.
I got my Anytone 878uvii plus for about $50 less than that Btech, NIB. Granted off ebay from a supplier there, so wouldn't have as good of a return policy as Amazon
Sounds like a good price
You can still get over night delivery even after COVID? I can maybe get about a weeks delivery IF I'm lucky. Good for you!!!
COVID delays are history
Hello, new in this, I looking for a radio that could cover 5 miles or more.....? thx
All of these can do that if you have clear line of sight
@@HamRadio2 Thx bro, I thinking on getting 2 Radioddity GA-510, to be in the legal side, should I get a license, if so which one, online?
How about a QRP HF only list from Amazon.
Thanks, I will look into that
I've been a ham since 1976, and I still use these cheap Chinese radios.. Being I'm retired and on a very fixed income, they're my ONLY choice for vhf/uhf radios. I use a Xiegu G90 for hf..
If you've been a Ham for that long, you should have some vintage radios that you bought a long time ago, that work better than any of these Chinese HTs.
@@HamRadio2I don't, and the reason I don't is the fact that I was inactive for close to 15 years and before becoming inactive, I sold all of the rigs I had. Now I'm retired on a very fixed budget and cheap chinese is pretty much IT now.
@@lvsluggo007 That's too bad, there were some great rigs from back then. What would be your preferred HT right now, if price wasn't an issue?
@@HamRadio2 I guess one of the kenwood/icom/yaesu models.. When I got back into the hobby I started with a Baofeng UV5R, was not impressed with it, but since I wanted to try out DMR, I'd heard good things about the Baofeng DR-1801, and bought one of those. Immediately replaced the f/w with OpenGD77. Great radio for both analog and DMR. Based on your review, I just ordered one of the Radtel RT-470X units, and should have it on Monday..
Quangsheng k6 for the win Ezgumer ride or die 😂 Look for more companies offering usb c batteries The socotran 8629 aka radtel .. batteries can be purchased and have usb c charging Exc am band receiver Gs5b is a great radio Its a great ht to use when camping as a campsite monitor radio Leave at campsite turned on plugged into a bigger battery w usb c Its like a portable base radio when camping
I have a G90 and love it use it for POTA
Yeah buddy let's do this❤
Radio illiterate here. Our group rides side by sides all over the country. I am looking for an affordable way for each of us to stay in contact with each other while out riding in mountainous areas with no cell service. Many times we get separated by miles apart and need to meet back up. What would be a good radio to serve our purposes.
GMRS would be the best option, probably. Ham Radio would work better for longer ranges, but that would require everyone to get tested. Purchase a GMRS license and have external antennas on top of your side by sides and you should be good for a few miles.
Both Uv-17 require the kenwood style connector.
I agree anytone make some great radios!! I have the 878uv 25 watts in my avalanche with a diamond antenna it’s amazing how far I can talk and reach repeaters!! I looked at the model of mine 878uv ll with vox!! Great video!!
Thanks for sharing
could you do a video of "not recommended" amazon products? like companies with bad support or prone to failure.
Probably be too many
I was gonna be pissed if you skipped the g90. Love mine.
Haha
Include a list of APRS HT radios.
Great idea. Not sure any exist on Amazon, but I will make a list soon.
And the UV 21r does 220 you didn't know it I got three of them in different colors and it gets out great on 220
Most of these 'feng radios that do 220 are very low output power. I might have to test this one
My personal opinion is ALL mobile radios need to have a removable face plate so they can be easily installed into a vehicle that doesn't allow for the body of the radio to fit together for an install.
I know you can't list all radios, but Stryker 955HP continues to be my favorite. Yes, it is an export radio but Oh, it has so many wonderful options and can be hacked in any number of ways.
I have one of those I'm testing
When I said "hacked" in my previous comment to you, I was really meaning "modifications" that are available for the Strykers...perhaps hacks, also. I will be awaiting for your video of the Stryker 955HP. thanks for answering my comments... @@HamRadio2
I like the Anytone AT-5555NII over the President. 10-12m
Yea I'd agree with that
Would really be cool if you (or another popular youtuber) would really dig into these radios and provide an overview of who really makes them. For example, you featured today the Radioddity GA-510 ... I have one. But I also have a Baofeng BF-H6 which is the same radio and if you look at the Tidradio TD-H6 it is also the same radio. So .. who really makes them? Radioddity? Baofeng? Tidradio? or? The same can be said for many other radios. The packaging (e.g. style, color, etc.) or vendor might change, but what is under the covers is really the same making the marketplace confusing. My guess is that Baofeng is the primary manufacturer and all these other radios (Tidradio, Radioddity, Retevis, etc.) are just white label options from Baofeng. Yes, they are different companies, but Baofeng (or?) is their manufacturer. But that's just a guess. I've poked around the interweb a few times to see if I could find a family tree of manufacturers (especially of the Chinese radios) but haven't been able to find anything. Would love to know because there are just too many videos (not you) about "new" radios that are really just re-packaged (new styling, etc,) versions of something that's already out there. Been burned a few times buying something that I thought was new and novel only to find out its really not different ...
If it isn't running on three-phase 4160 VAC, it's only QRP. 73...
Do you have a list?
The link is in the description of the video
I've got the UV-K5 and UV-K6 and like them for what they are. Looks a lot less CCPish and is still cheap. Not stellar harmonics on VHF, but fine otherwise.
Yeah I found the same thing about harmonics. They work pretty well. I like how hackable they are.
I have the Xeigu G90. I am very happy with it, BUT...
20 WATTS IS NOT QRP!
QRP is 5 watts and under. With a decent antenna, the 20 watts is all the power for whatever you need to work on HF. I have DXCC Mixed and Digital with the G90 and need to find 2 states on 80 meters for 5 Band WAS. No beams, just verticals and wire antennas on a city lot.
I have run QRP since 1972. In 1966 I started out with all tube gear, and back then 100 watts or less was considered QRP. I When I had the space and the beams, I worked all states on QRP.
IMHO, the G90 is the perfect first radio for a new HF operator, and you can turn the power back and run QRP if you want.
Anything under 100w is QRP. The 5w rule only applies to contests.
QRP is literally defined as "low power" or "decrease power". There's actually not a number associated with it. But since most rigs are 100w, QRP can be anything that's less
I have the anytone 778uv, in my jeep, it's been a good radio, would buy it again
You showed one radio that was about $130, but it sure looks a lot like the QYT KT-8900D, which I think is around $100. Prices vary though, so could be more expensive by now.
Which one?
@@HamRadio2 Anytone AT-778UV
@@HamRadio2 in fact, the QYT is currently $80 from several sellers on Amazon
Anytone is generally a higher quality than QYT
@@HamRadio2 well, not having any experience with Anytone, I will take your word for that. But I find it funny how similar many of these radios look, leading me to wonder if they are all coming out of the same factory, just loaded with different firmware and having some cosmetic changes to the face and the mic.
I have a lightly used President Lincoln II+ I will sell cheap if interested.
Yes the IOS app is available for free for the GS-5B
Good
Not a fan of Android programming and/or accompanying GPS locating apps on the higher end China radios. The apps lock you into sketchy servers located in China. I can't imagine a China based APRS GPS locating server working out for me in any SHTF scenarios.
Is a DMR radio the same as a HAM radio
DMR is a mode, like AM and FM. You can have DMR on Ham or other types of service too
So I have the tyt 9800D…I need another unit as I move it from home to truck. I’m a little confused as folks are telling me the 6 and 10 meter access is useless as no one uses FM on 6 & 10? So, should look at just get a dual band for my 2nd unit or does the limited access on the FM only 6&10 have any traffic? Obviously I am a new ham….I am going for my general next month. I like the anyone you showed unless you think it’s worth it to have the 6&10 on FM only?
6 and 10 are used, just not as often as 2 or 70cm. So it depends on what's near you, if you have repeaters for 6 and 10, then get another quad band
qt40 and the qt60
