Not a dry-fire.
This painful little incident occurred back in 2013 at the Gander Mountain Archery Range when I was shooting my compound bow, a Zone 1 Fusion, from the now defunct Canadian bow manufacturer Bow Zone. A 70 pound double cam bow with a true 97% let-off...
Having just gotten my strings replaced, I proceeded to shooting the bow to check the 20 yard zero. After a couple of groups I heard and felt a creak coming from the lower cam, in the video you can see me looking down to troubleshoot it at full draw when the pain train comes to town...
Explosion. Not a dry fire. Not a derail.

Have you ever been hit in the face while wearing glasses. Your eyes will be safe but it doubles the pain. I don’t recommend basketballs to the face regardless of if you have them though.
That’s a calm guy. You would have had video of me beating the floor with what was left of my bow.
lol. I definitely felt like doing that. It still wound up in the art bin.
The bow itself looked okay. Looks like the line just snapped.
Looks like torqing sideway and derailed it

There isn’t any obvious sign that torquing is what caused this to happen.

Looked kinda like you torqued the bow and the string came off the cam. Which would have still caused cables to release pressure at full draw basically causing a dry fire

I’m here because this happened to me the other day. New Bowtech revolt x. Had it since the release date. Started drawing back and I got a bit distracted. More than likely i torqued the bow and derailed it. My heart dropped. All seems fine, shop reconnected the string. I did shoot it afterward just to make sure it was ok. Waiting on a new set of strings and cables to come in. Can’t take a chance as hunting season is just around the corner
Glad to hear that you and your bow were not injured and happy hunting! Thanks for the comment and do please consider subscribing!
just blew my bow tech reign 7 up at the range this morning, not a dry fire, blew both limbs off and my gold tip carbon arrow shattered in 4 pieces, shot 40/50 arrows into the butt then next shot I could only come to about 80% draw, was going to let down but at that very second the bow just blew up. Going to have a tech look at it and see if the cause can be determined and if it is repairable. Luckily for as violent as it was, and it was violent, I was uninjured.
Glad to hear that you're okay and sorry about your bow!
I've never heard of that bow company before, I myself picked up a Barnett white tail hunter crossbow not to long ago and have been told from a couple people that they have a tendency to dry fire, hopefully that's not so....that being said I'm glad that you are okay
I appreciate it. Be well and enjoy!

He either de-railed it or something on one of the cams was set up wrong. He was torquing the hell out of that bow so I'm thinking it was wither the former, or a combo of the two. One of you guys should have shown him what he was doing wrong. He's lucky he wasn't seriously hurt.
I'm inclined to agree here. It's the most likely scenario if I were able to dumb guess it.

I read the description and still don't know what happened... The cam bent?
To everyone saying he torqued the bow, if that was the case, with his grip, you'd see the cams move right but here we only see them move left. No torquing.

i think i know what happned...
so while you were shooting you module for let-off came loose so you didnt have any let-off so you were shaking in your full draw and you were surprised and wanted to let down in that moment you tourqed (i dont know how to spell it english inst my native language) and that tourqe made the bow derail. that's why the string was still atached to your relese.
hope you didnt give up on archery and countinue to shoot!
Your English is better than my any other language. Cheers!
+PEW PEW GODZ Thanks for the comment! Sounds reasonable.
100% correct torqued it causing the derail
There has been much discussion on this point, but you are entitled to your opinion.
The part of the video where I'm looking down at the lower cam, just before it explodes, I am hearing a "creaking" sound thinking that its my cam. It was actually strands popping. This is probably where your analysis of me torquing the bow comes from, I'm not an expert and I was trying to discern the location of the problem. I would not have fired it after hearing a weird noise and it didn't make the noise prior.
The tech made the problem right when I discussed it with him. Cheers.

I'm definitely lucky that I wasn't hurt.
I tracked down the fellow that made my custom string-set and he remembers working on the bow. Since the bow is not being manufactured anymore (its a "Bowzone - Zone 1 Fusion"), the tech was unfamiliar with the cable lengths and couldn't find the information anywhere. He went off the damaged one that I took the bow in for service.
...
Ouch!
I'm not buying the torqued bow string hypothesis since he was using a release. How old was the string on that bow?
Ryan Johnson Hey Ryan. The string was a brand new custom-made.
Peace, Love and Guns maybe too short?
That's one of the ideas that I had as well.
Ryan Johnson to me it looked like he torqued his bow hand, and the string slipped off the cam.

torqued the grip. String slipped off cam.
That is a very popular hypothesis here. Thanks for the comment!
nellz442. Are you saying that this wasn't the normal swiveling release? I didn't know of any other kind.
+joe woodchuck It was a standard trigger release.
I would say that the string was either worn out or it had a slight cut in it and that is why it popped.
Guy is lucky that he still has his eyes and the arrow did not go into his forearm.
The string was a brand new custom. The down cable sheared off at the lower cam. I was very lucky - they nock when right by my eye and it's what swept the glasses off of my face.

You derailed it. Meaning torked the string out of the cam
The down-cable sheared off, it was brutal. Such a clean cut.
Nothing about that says derail. Every time there is a vid of a bow blowing up theres always somebody on here trying to sound like "they are a pro" and say the bow was gripped too tight and torqued.. Sure that can cause a derail but if someone is using a release its not so easy to torque the string enough to cause a derail, unless they are intentionally trying too... Plus the dude wasnt even "gripping" the bow so how did he cause this again??. So learn something yourself before trying to sound like a "Pro"
**slow clap** The first gentleman to believe my side of the story... or to simply watch the video.
also it wasnt fired. can clearly see him testing the back wall when the string gave?
Wow! Hope you were not hurt. Not shure but it looks like the cable de railed off the cam tough break
Still alive and kicking! Thanks for the concern! :)
How did the bow break
The down cable broke. Thanks for the comment and do please consider subscribing.
couldnt tell if it was the shooter, or the top limb flexing side to side when he drew. Also saw erratic hand movement with the release, almost like it failed initially. Glad he didnt get hurt. I own 2 compounds and 2 recurves and shoot all of them with a finger tab.
The top limb flex idea is one I have not heard yet, but I must thank you for the concern shown. The hand movement that you describe as erratic is probably me drawing slightly back and forth to discern where the creak I was hearing was coming from.
glad you didnt catch any slivers to the face. Hope you never experience a bow letting loose again. I had an old Browning that creaked when drawing and I would give it a little graphite powder in between limbs and riser. 70 lb draw and only 50% let off, so finally hung bow on wall as I no longer trust the bow at full draw. Stay safe and happy shooting.
Thanks, tree frog. You too!
It looked like his trigger wouldn’t release or he was having trouble getting to his anchor and he was pumping the string. Jumped the cam and came apart. That was a $600-1000 mistake!
anthony Haynes Thanks for the comment, Anthony. My release was working fine. I was trying to troubleshoot a creaking sound coming from the lower cam when the string broke.
anthony Haynes a new string is all it needs. This was just a classic derailment, aka user error.

Looks like more going on, looks as though you pulled your release 3 times????
Right you are, ssn708. I was trying to isolate where in my draw a certain 'creaking' noise was coming from. Turns out the control cable shearing was the creaking that I was hearing.
You made three attempts to release, you torqued the string and derailed it, from appearances. But you were there, not me.
The release that I was using in this video is a standard two-jaw trigger release. My finger is behind the trigger (possibly resting atop) the release. I definitely made three attempts to see and hear where the sound was coming from - there is much discussion on this video about torqueing the bow, but that would have been done with the bow arm, not the release. Some folks say they see the torqueing, some say they don't.
You get to be the judge. :)
HA! Not from this vantage point I don't! Be well, looked scary as heck!
You should be able to draw and let down as much as you want without a blow up like that. It was a crappy bow and it failed. Not the shooters fault.
This isn’t an insult but it looked like it was a little to heavy on the poundage which looked like you were struggling a bit to pull it back. It happens to the best of us so luckily you were not harmed.
how does that matter if the string breaks?
It matters a lot and when he’s pulling it back the bow is moving and shaking. Twisting a string or shaking too much can cause the bow to torque and when the string becomes misaligned it can cause the bow to act as its being dry fired when the strings pop off the cams.
what are you talking about dude he's pulling it back with ease every time. at no point does he struggle to pull it back. you sound like a fake expert. I've never had this happen so I don't know what you mean by, "it happens to the best of us"
