When he was in his early teens, Roy Clark, along with his dad, used to attend the almost weekly Saturday night parties at my grandparent's home in Oxon Hill, Maryland (his dad and my grandfather worked together at the Washington Navy Yard). There was always lots of good food (prepared by my grandmother) and country music, and by all accounts, Roy was a somewhat shy but very talented musician even then.

Story goes, a reporter once asked a British rocker what it felt like to be the world's greatest guitarist. Rocker reportedly said, "I don't know. Go ask Roy Clark."

His comedic approach of the shy, nervous character in those days took a ton of guts to pull off on TV as he must’ve known some people wouldn’t even realize that it was a shtick. Roy was one of the most accomplished of performers. A similar bit is Jerry Van Dyke, on the Dick Van Dyke show.

And the nicest man I’ve ever met. I was front desk clerk at hotel he and the boys stayed at for the Missouri State Fair. Charming, kind, talented, and funny. 💖💐🙏

I saw him in Branson when he was at least age 70, fronting what was basically a rockabilly band. The dude still had it. Very rarely shows up on any "best of" list. Criminal. One of the greatest American performers of any genre. But, if you're reading this - you probably know that.
