Roy Clark The Great Pretender Live On 1969
Roy Clark The Great Pretender Lyrics
Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
    Pretending that I'm doing well
My need is such; I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell
Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
I play the game; but to my real shame
You've left me to dream all alone
Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not; you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
    Pretending that you're still around
Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
    Yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
    Pretending that you're still around

Back in the seventies a friend of mine went nearly every weekend to a country music festival. He knew I played music (trumpet) and sang for most of my life and he ask me on dat who I thought the best country entertainer was. With little thought I said Roy Clark. He said I never thought of him. Later he told me that he had been asking people he knew at the week end outings the same question. All of who were country musicians. A few would say Roy, but not many until he told them his pick was Clark. After a bit of time they would come back to him and say "you know you're right, I never thought of him". Still to this day many people are in this boat. Roy was the best.

He seemed to have either about six people in the audience or a really tough crowd here.
I really liked Roy Clark's talent and humour. There's a clip on RUclips of him dueting with Glen Campbell and he completely subverts the usual tradition of guests on music shows - when Campbell says "Hey - why don't we do a duet?' he replies "No way, jack!"
Glen Campbell looks somewhat taken aback for a second, then they both laugh uproariously, and off they go into the duet. I love that moment!
