I’m a pilot for a major airline. Back in the early regional airline days, I brought Roy into Minneapolis to connect to Phoenix where he had a gig coming up. He loved airplanes and was a very accomplished pilot in his own right. He invited me to sit with him in the gate area before his flight and we talked airplanes for 45 minutes. I never once mentioned I, “played” guitar (not a total fool, y’know!). He said, “I’m surprised a young fella like you would even know my name.” I told him that having been raised in Alabama, I was put down in front of the TV to see every episode of, “Hee Haw” that ever aired and that I knew his name before I knew all my relatives’ names! He gave me his autograph for my favorite uncle who idolized him, shook my hand, said, “nice landing back there!”, and we parted company. Class act all the way.

Ya know...when I was 19 I thought I knew shit. I was a bit of a snob about music, really. By then I’d seen The Stones, Zep, Van Halen, RUSH and every other major rock act of that time.
So, a buddy of mine who worked with me at a restaurant says he’s got a couple of tickets he can’t use for Roy Clark. Very near front row center at the Albuquerque Convention Center and would I like em’? I says let’s go so we can clown these country bumpkins and make fun of Roy.
So, we go in half drunk and talking smack about hayseeds and shit kicking and the lights go down and Doc and Merle, who opened the show, are led out and they sit down and......holy crap!!! 😳
Now I’m in shock at the unbelievably intense guitar playing I had just witnessed when the lights go down again and the backing band kicks it and under a white hot spotlight Roy strolls out and picks up his Guild and the next thing I know it’s over and he’s gone. I mean....he was so good and so funny and so heartfelt that I COMPLETELY lost track of time. His picking, strumming, leads and meter were absolutely spot on the one. And the highlight of the night was when he pulled out this $1,000 Ovation and sang a song for his mom who had just passed and tears welled up in my eyes.
I swear, Roy Clark was one of the greatest entertainers I ever had the privilege to see live. He was an artist like no other. He was humorous and tough as steel. Fast fingers and smooth voice. Fair thee well, Roy...and know I will NEVER forget you! Nuff said! 👍🔥

@NORTHWOODSPREPPER1He's right - Cash combined a couple songs to make Folsom Prison but never acknowledged where he got it from and made money off of it. Years later he paid for the rights to the original material so he couldn't be sued for stealing it which would have cost him a fortune. So he stole it and then paid for it.

He was the star of one of the most popular TV shows of the 60s, Hee Haw, a country bumpkin variety show. He was probably one of the best known country stars of the time, although he could play any genre. He's also amazing on the banjo & violin (He'd call it a fiddle). He was also on an episode of The Odd Couple, where he plays an incredible rendition of Malaguena, as well as the fiddle & banjo.
Here's one of them. Just search:
*Roy Clark can play any genre!*
You can see his versatility all in one clip. It's on RUclips. You should check it out!
