Incredible moves. KH2 made me think how as children, our minds are so plastic and creative but we lose that as we become adults and abide by rigid rules. Alphazero has that child-like creative ability to see all possibilities, combined with incredible brute force of calculation. It’s an irresistible combination.
Nice examples. Would have been nice to see the stockfish analysis of the same position before and after AlphaZero's move. Did Stockfish expect any of those crazy moves?
I would love to see an April Fools edition to this series like imagine you are so into finding the move but then BOOM, the worst possible move is played.
This video is incredible. it really is remarkable how strong these entities can be at chess. If you think that world champion Carlsen has been playing for almost 30 years, and he simply has zero chance to pull off a draw against this monstruous engine, it is mind blowing.
@@yellowtitan6040 That's true but this also paves the path for the incoming grandmasters of the new generation that get to learn and structure their neural networks to behave in a way similar to AlphaZero
At 5:20, this is how to deliver a smooth checkmate Queen takes h3 pawn (giving check to king) King is forced to take queen on h3 Rook comes on h5 and MATE ! Reason: Rook has taken over the h file, poor king has been left with only two squares on g2 and g4 but both are covered by the light square bishop on f3. !! B O O M !!
Bg5 in one of its games was definitely the #1 move. Don't recall the exact game though, but it sacrificed a bishop for what seemed like zero compensation.
The computer Go programs started beating humans at Go in such a convincing way that humans wouldn't play them anymore. Along came AlphaZero (AlphaGo) and in a match with the top computers, beat every one of them in a 100 game match.
That first bishop move I considered because I was thinking it’s probably some ridiculous thing like this to open up space. Maybe I should go with what’s ridiculous and I’ll win lol
You shouldn't call Alpha Zero the strongest engine ever. It crushed SF 8, yes, but so does SF 11 and SFnnue. We don't know if it even stood a chance against more modern engines.
The founders of Google misspelled "googol" as "google" and in the case of "Alpha Zero", I think that's also a misspelling of "Aleph Zero" which is a long standing mathematical term for "infinity", which like "googol" represents a large number. A lot of people would see the word "Aleph" and think it's "Alpha."
@My Account chess is a solvable game, yes. But we are faaaaar from it. Even if AlphaZero was trained by a super computer as large as a galaxy, it couldn't answer if a position is a win or a lose or a draw. It simply didn't have enough time to self learn.
@My Account Machine Learning is not magic, if the programme doesn't improve anymore, it may just be stuck in a local optimum. Alpha Zero is definitely impressive, but Leela is now stronger most likely, same as Stockfish 11. But we won't get an answer unless we get to see a proper match again
That was against Stockfish 8 though, which is many orders of magnitude weaker than the current Stockfish 12. People are saying Alphazero would be no match, hard to say.
The game 4, I dont think that is a special move in that position, because if I put it on Stockfish the evaluation for that position before the move is +8.4. So it is already a clear win for white "whatever move" white does. Alpha Zero with white does the best move, but even with second best or third best move AZ would easily win. Its more genius if other programs think the position is even but then finds a winning move.
1:57 I was wondering why black didn’t play knight takes bishop on f5 Perhaps it could somehow diffuse the pressure and prevent white’s attempt to checkmate black king?
Spoilers for Game#2 checkmate!! If the queen takes on H3+, the white king has no choice but to take back with king. This is then followed by Rook h5# as G2 is defended by the white square bishop.
Alphazero evaluated moves based on win percentage rather than piece points, so surprising tactics don't seem as surprising as if a human had played them
