    When it comes to production value, your video is tops concerning showing steps without wasting the viewer's time with repetitive scenes. RUclips can learn a lot from you. Cheers!

    Build update. After building 2 of these I have found out. The manifold only need to be about 6 inches squared. The pump selection is way to strong . The foam insulation needs to be twice as thick. The Top needs to be painted Black to keep algae from growing inside. The manifold only needs 6 sprayers on it. Using a heat mat with a temp control under it will help roots grow if kept around 72 degrees

      This is great insight! Would you mind sharing the pump you use now? I can update the link in the description to the better option for any future builders.

      for anyone that cares. now that i've had an opportunity to run the cloners for a cycle, the only change i made was adding a drain plug to the bottom of the tote. makes for much easier mid run water change. other than that, works like a champ. thanks again.

    This is great! I made just like this, with the same tote and pump. I used a smaller hole saw (only 2 inch) and didn't use the cups. The neoprene inserts squeeze in just fine into the holes and don't need the cups for support. I also have jammed up to 7 cuts in each site for over 200 cuttings from one clone machine! I get roots in 10 to 14 days depending on the type of plant. It is the MOST effective method of cloning I have ever used. Most times, I get 100% success rate. I never got close to that with rockwool, soil or any other media. What I'm interested to try is to grow out some tomatoes and other veggies in a box like this.

    • @BarnsFarmGarden
      @BarnsFarmGarden  7 лет назад +1

      Glad to hear you've had such great success. I too would like to try growing things full term in this system. Which, is one of the biggest reasons I went with the larger holes to allow for a net cup. With the hole large enough for a net cup, I can easily switch between a neoprene cutting insert and a net cup full of clay pebbles (a common setup for hydroponic growing).

      Pool noodles cut into 1" chunks are a cheap alternative to neoprene pucks, i`ve used them for years. If you grow toms its best to run a seperate res as the roots will soon fill the tub and engulf the pump ;)

      I get nearly 100% success rate with rockwool and plain pete moss, but this seems so much easier...

    Great job! I've made one with only 6 large planters. I am growing peppers and they are loving it! I run it 24/7 and 6 hours sun. Sometimes I just throw ice cubes in the water to cool it, otherwise it's perfect! This Idea can work for full grown plants and produce veggies! Upscale it as the plants get bigger. 35 site, 12, 6, 3, 2, 1. The bigger it gets just keep transplanting to larger model. Great work! A lot cleaner than my DIY haha!

    Good video… however, I need to point out a few things… the hole but should not be over 2”…. I cut 2” and the cup almost falls thru, I needed to super glue them down so they didn’t fall thru…. Also the pump connection does not fit a 1” coupler it comes with a 1/2 in connection.. so get the right sized PVC adapters if you will attempt this build. Also I would flex seal over the yellow top to prevent light from getting thru the lid.

    I built this cloner and it's fantastic! Thank you! One thing, it was so air tight that the pressure from the air stone and misters kept pushing up the 2" net pot collars and allowed water to spray out. I modified mine to include a 3/8" pressure release port on the lid in one of the corners. I used a grommet and a 90 degree elbow. It was a perfect solution. Anyone else have a similiar situation?

    • @mayhemmiller9076
      @mayhemmiller9076 5 лет назад +2

      No need for it to be air tight as the professional ez cloners are actually made to breath to allow more oxygen and fresh air to the roots

    Def the best video for a cloning machine I've seen yet. I was going to buy another Clone King but I am going to do this instead. I like the option of being able to use net pots too. I'm curious to know how much water you add in this. Also how often to you change the water? The water warms up fairly quickly in my Clone King. Thinking I should put that on a timer.

    I used a similar concept to build a 16 pot aeroponic setup only dif is more pumps and I've got sprayers on the inside walls aswell for when those roots get crazy AF. Its not an easy thing to operate but im getting 3 week veg and flipping them ending up with an average of 6 ounces a plant and you CANNOT beat the taste of the flower in a proper aroponic grow

    I know this is an older video, but us diy'ers love ideas.
    I would recommend adding a small 80mm or larger intake computer fan. Super cheap and helps get oxygen to the roots to increase you rate of success. Just make sure you do it in a way it won't get wet.

    • @mikemaz6121
      @mikemaz6121 2 года назад

      Not sure adding a computer fan with exposed internals and electronics to a container of spraying water is a great idea. Also it’s just not needed. The roots are going to be dangling in the air inside the container. They are getting oxygen more often than they get water and lifting the lid even once a day will exchange the air

    • @coreyg7364

      Most likely you used cheaply made drill or hole saw. Skimping on those things will definitely cause you to make a larger hole than intended.

  • @505_chill_official
    @505_chill_official 6 лет назад

    2" hole saw works just fine for 2" net pots, I personally don't like the space the 2 1/8" hole saw gives, there is too much room for leaks. Thanks alot. And also I'll add, you better make sure the storage bin has latch clamps on the side, the lids don't hold on tight with the weather stripping (something everyone failed to mention).

    Well made video, complete and detailed. Thanks! One important question not addressed: You do not mention a fan to dissipate the heat produced by the pump. Did I miss something?

    • @BarnsFarmGarden
      @BarnsFarmGarden  6 лет назад

      Thank you for the appreciation, Joel. This idea of excessive heat build-up seems to be a popular one, but i'm not sure why. I've been using this exact setup for a long time and have Never had the need to dissipate heat. Perhaps it's because I have always used a run timer set at 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off. With that timing I have not noticed any kind of heat building up in my system. If you are getting heat build-up, then i'm not so sure a fan would be the answer. That would be like setting a fan next to a simmering pot of water in order to keep it cool. You would have better success just changing the water or adding ice cubes (not that either of those a great solutions).
      Thanks again, and happy cloning.

    I think I followed your plan pretty close. Mine leaks around top even with foam on top. Put tomatoes in it. Just water. So is it better to put in a nutrient solution or one of the rooting solutions. I see some say just water works. Then timer or no timer. It has been about 10 days, most plants are still alive, but only a few have very little hairs. Timer recommendations and on off. I really want to get this down before it becomes blackberry propagating time. any advice welcomed
    And this is the best video on here. Built it with no problems. My leak may because foam, and those knobs or stick up on the top.

    • @BarnsFarmGarden
      @BarnsFarmGarden  7 лет назад +1

      Curtis, I've only used plain water in mine. I've read that using a rooting gel will increase your success rate, but I haven't tested that out. I use a timer (linked in the description) because at a 15min on 15min off cycle you decrease the chance of heat building up in your water. Another upside is that it uses half the electricity to run with very little, if any effect on rooting success. As far as the leaking goes. If you didn't use a Closed Cell Foam as shown in the video than the lid is always going to leak. Hope that helps, and Thank you for watching!

    • @deastman2012
      @deastman2012 7 лет назад

      Curtis Jones I have built several now and tried every type of seal available. They all leak. Currently I am using a Ziplock brand tote with a foam seal and latches. I even added a second foam seal and after a couple of months it now leaks. The reason is that all of these totes are designed to repel elements from the outside and specifically from above, but definitely not from within.
      If leaking is a concern, buy one designed to keep water in. I'm gonna.

    • @deastman2012
      @deastman2012 7 лет назад

      As far as this video goes, it's very well made. I found that placing a sprayer directly over the riser causes it to spray too much and poorly. Also, if you cut a little semicircle from the corner hole the same width as the cord you can still use that pot for a cutting.

      Hi Brenda, Thank you! My timer was set at its lowest available time interval which is 15 min. So I ran 15min on then 15 min. off and it seemed to work well. I can't remember exactly how long it took for the arborvitae to root. I want to say between 3-6 weeks and even then only 10% or less showed signs of root development. Perhaps a better rate can be achieved, I just haven't had the time to experiment and find the proper formula for success for them. Thanks again!

      I've only used this setup for rooting cuttings and have found that after about 3 weeks the water needs to be changed out for fresh. I would imagine if you used this to grow plants full term, they too would benefit from a water change at about 3 weeks or so.

      Hows that working? Interested as the reason they use multiple fine misters is to get an even spray to each plant, I would be concerned that a full spray wouldnt be even and also that the droplets coming from it may be too large? Hope it works for you let us know

    Hi ! alright ? I've always made clones in a conventional way, for years I have 100% effectiveness in cloning in soil. But I made my own ez cloner machine, and I'm going to try to learn this technique with this machine... do you leave the water pump on 24hrs?

    Hello,
    First of all I really enjoyed your video . I just made my own smaller version and have been trying to clone hibiscus clones from one of my plants . Currently the system runs on an air pump 24/7. It’s been 6 days and still no sign of roots . I added cloned solution to the tip of the cuttings and added cloning nutrients . Can you help me out as to what I am doing wrong that is not allowing for the branch to root. Thanks

    • @BarnsFarmGarden
      @BarnsFarmGarden  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching Nestor. Rooting cuttings is definitely a tricky thing since each plant species will require slightly different techniques. I've not tried rooting a Hibiscus but I have read it could take up to 6 weeks for hibiscus cutting to develop good root growth. If that is true, than hibiscus may be better suited to being placed in moist, well drained soil rather than a cloning machine. The reason being, if they sit in a cloner for 6 weeks, that is a lot of work changing water to avoid rotting and also running the system 24/7 may also promote rotting. I would suggest dipping the cuttings in rooting hormone and placing in well draining moistened potting soil. Try a container that has a lid that you can close (with ventilation) to help seal in humidity. keep soil moist but not saturated, store in a protected space with plenty of indirect sunlight (or artificial light) and let sit undisturbed for a few weeks. Hope this helps, Thanks again!

    The net cups in the description are a little under 2 inches, so a 2 1/8 or a 2" hole saw will be too big for them now, so if you go with the original dimensions you should look for one of the better brands like cz or something which have wide tops. Otherwise if going with these, get a smaller hole saw. Or perhaps I just got a bad batch, but if you're buying a hole saw you should check the actual dimensions of the cup first if possible

      You're right, should always measure twice before making a cut. I've had to address this in previous comments too. Sometimes the seller of these products gets a slightly different product and sells it with the same description and at times the lip edge is just different enough that they fall through the hole size I mention in this video. Thanks for your feedback and for watching!

    How did you keep it from leaking water out from around the edge of the lid mine leaks like a sive

    • @BarnsFarmGarden
      @BarnsFarmGarden  10 месяцев назад

      We must have gotten lucky and didn't have issues. But, we have seen others comment that they had success with the following: doubled the foam strip, reduced the pump size and number of nozzles.

  • @LegalTyranny

    I used a rubber maid tote and the god damned thing leaks water at the edges. I have an idea of how to block that from happening but wanted to warn others to try to get lids that will seal as well as possible to avoid the sort of mess I ran into. I'm going to use hot glue to attach hallway runner plastic to the upper portion of the lid the whole way around which should act as a shield to block the intense spray from seeping out.

  • @idie123

    can those lids be ordered anywhere. all I can find is the diamond shaped ones. what are the size of the squares? and the space between them. I may just draw the lines and use a template

      None whatsoever with the parts I used. Even if you got a much larger pump, I think it would be very unlikely your cups would come flying out due to the spray.

      I've not used a rooting gel in this setup but I have read that you could see faster results with higher success rate by using a rooting gel. If you look in the description I have linked to a gel that has been highly recommended by some.
