Good word. We learn everything in life by explanation, experience, and example.
Here is my explamation based off of experience. Maybe it will be and example to someone ,though you can only read the explanation.
Those little round packs, Zyn ,the nicotine salt you put in your mouth. Its not nasty like dip, tastes like mint . It works better than a patch for me, because it is intended to work for an hour at a time. A patch distributes nicotine for 24 hours. So there is no high point in that 24 hours if you get a craving.
So ,I wake up, eat ,and want a cigarette. I can put the Zyn in. Its fast ,within a minute the nicotine hits me ,its not nasty at all, but like a mint. Its 4 dollars for 15 in a pack. But you won't need to use many. I went from a pack a day to using 5 of those.
What about the hand to mouth addiction? This is why I almost switched to a vape. But what I did ,was grabbed a pack of hemp cigarettes. You can't puff them ,but you have to pull them like weed. But it smokes, and has no addictive chemical(maybe slightly for some, but not for me)
So what this did ,was took the idea from my mind that when I puff something, I get my nicotine fix. However both cravings , the nicotine craving ,and the hand to mouth craving ,was satisfied. Now I like cbd products for my skin. I even use the Dr Teals Epsom salt for my bath and it has thc . However I do not like to alter my mind. I can say ,the hemp cigarettes come with a mild relaxing feeling ,then it wears off after a few minutes . They also were not addictive. Its not something you will are likely to end up going out and buying pack after pack like cigarettes.
You see, once I broke the idea in my mind that nicotine comes from puffing something, it was easier to ween it out of my system.
Both of my parents died of lung cancer 13 years ago. My mom never smoked . I'm 41 ,I quit smoking when I was 33. I've been to about 20 funerals and have a sister, aunt and uncle left. I didn't smoke for 7 years after I quit at 33 , then I had another ,different type of trial in my life ,and instead of completely relying on my faith ,I started smoking again. Smoked for 6 months. Before that 6 months ,I smoked weed for 5 months, which helped lead to that trial (i had been clean 7 years). The nicotine in the blunt wraps got me. So when I quit smoking weed, I went to cigarettes shortly thereafter . So I pretty much put my lungs through the ringer for 11 months ,although i could still run 7 miles on the eliptical because I do not slack on exercise and diet. We walk in the woods 4 or 5 times a week ,and eat healthy.
A good friend of mine also quit smoking by switching to vapes. It seems better than the dry smoke from cigarettes which BBQ your lungs as he put it. So when I was 33 ,I quit cold turkey. This last time , I set a date. I said I would not smoke longer than 6 months and put it in my calendar . During the 2 months leading to the date , I experimented with patches ( which work pretty well) and and some herbal cigarettes. My friend who switched to vape stopped by one day, and gave me some ZYN salt wintergreen.
I put those two together(salt and hemp cigs) with my faith , and putting down the cigarettes was easier than I expected. I also took some vacation time off of work , as we worked through the pandemic due to military orders. I do recommend that if you want to quit smoking that you try to get some time off of work. Try to remove any stressful thing from your life for a week or so. Stress also kills and leads to many different bad things , so if you are successful , consider trying to keep moving in that direction. Back when I was younger , I had to quit things several times due to getting locked up (5 drug felonies before I was 33). See it's not just about quitting, but having your mind made up. If you are of the faith ,then I have extra advice for you ,and even if not ,i can still help in some areas.
I hope this helps someone who wants to quit . I want you to put the cigarettes down . I do believe tapering down with the vape would have worked as well , but I want people to know there are several methods for this . Maybe you tried one thing and failed. Maybe you have tried multiple times abd failed. There is a method for you. Our brains are not all wired the same. I have an addictive personality so I have to be extra careful. I think most of us are addicted to caffeine , let that be the only thing. If you kick that in today's world ,I salute you!
Feel free to message me, my fb name is the same that is on here.
Consistency is a sign of integrity. There are only a few things I waver back and forth with, depending on the topic. One is pragmatism. In this case , if you want to quit ,ask yourself if the ends justify the means.
Here's a video to give you an idea of some of my thinking

one day I decided to wake up as a non smoker, no therapy, nothing, only by will power now it's been 8 months since my last cigarette! Best decision I've ever made.
edit : it's been almost 2 years since I quit. my bodyweight was 44 kg when I was a smoker, my appetite increases a lot, I eat like an animal. I balanced it by doing weight training and now my bodyweight is 64 kg. I've never been this fit before. I also used to have anxiety, now it's gone. to anyone reading this and planning to quit, I wish you good luck and a happy life.

It was a similar case for me. Started at 15 quit out of the blue at 24. I suddenly just didn't feel like it. Gained a bunch of pounds but it was fine since I have always been working out.
I feel like I am gaslighting myself when I read the experiences of others but I never thought about quitting as being a big deal. For most of the time I smoked a cigarette per half an hour. But reading some of the comments makes me believe that I wasn't addicted but just being bored and going through the motions. I don't know, maybe it's me but I feel like making addiction out as an ever present shadow instead of a mosquito that you just need to make effort to squash seems like the false approach. This, of course only concerns tobacco and alcohol, both of which I have been addicted to.

I smoked heavily for 45 years. A few weeks ago, I'd been feeling bad for a week so went to my primary doctor. My doctor discovered that my blood O2 saturation was at 70 which is very dangerous. Huge risk of sudden death. Doctor sent me to the hospital. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and COPD. I knew I had COPD for years. It got so bad that I struggled to breathe when I laid down and my heart would pound. I couldn't walk 30 feet without breathing hard. The pulmonologist told me that if I continued to smoke, I'd be dead in 2 years. He also said that if I quit smoking now, I can expect significant healing and live a long life. The antibiotics, steroids and breathing treatments I got in the hospital really helped. After 4 days without smoking in the hospital, I have kept going. I feel so much better. My cardio has increased about 500%. I wear a patch when I'm at work and munch hard candy all day. The candy is what I used to replace the cigarettes. I've only been smoke free for 15 days, but that's something I was never able to do before. I know I will never smoke again. I almost passed the point of no return. Fast forward to 2022. What a trip reading what I wrote in 2017. It's been 4 years and 11 months now and I haven't smoked. I'm alive and feeling much better. In 2017, I told myself I would just have to endure the withdrawal and I did. I only used the patches for a few days. The hard candy helped a lot, but with or without it I will never smoke. If you make up your mind to do it, nothing can stop you. The cravings started to lessen after a couple weeks and I felt stronger. If you think you can't stop smoking, you're wrong. I did it. You can do it too.

Day 2-3 is the worst physically.
Day 7-10 is the worst psychologically.
Same goes for people whos trying to stop weed.
Also dont let relapse make you give up.
I relapsed weed smoking alot, but i didnt change my perspective about it.
I just hated it more and more, which lead me to learn more about it.
Eventully i got educated in knowing about whats going on with my condition.
What helped me is that i prepared for it, then i isolated my self for 30 days.
I kept my self moving, sweating, drinking 7-8 liter water a day, and followed vloggers talking about their condition while also stopping.
Hearing that people is going through the same, and understanding that its natural detox symptoms was great help.
    Your body is getting clean.
Eat healthy during your detox, because you are teaching your brain a new life style.
Irritation, anxiety, insomnia, and loss of appitite is the main widrawal symptoms.
Appitite will slowly get better after day 2. Same goes for insomnia, the more your appitite comes back the better you can sleep.
Irritation will fade slowly after day 7-10.
Anxiety will stick on a little longer.
You know one gets same symptoms when losing someone close. Or a dog!
Its normal, natural, and (not) dangerous like when quitting alcohol or heroin.
Lastly! Its alright to be with the moment.
Some people prefere to do it alone (thats what i did), some people need someone to talk with.
Personally i dont like anyone to see my weaknesses. It would have made me relapse!
Day 7-10 is mostly when people relapse.
But also dont underestimate it, because many also relapse after 6month even tho they are over all cravings and widrawal symptoms.
Thats because life can be tough in periods.
So learning how to cope like you did before you started to smoke, is very important.
In a sense you are getting born again.
Day 14-30 is when you are over all widrawal symptoms and cravings.
Thats when you feel like been reborn. You smile and proud of your self. You start to enjoy life!
But as i said learn how to cope with problems and stress, as you did before you started to smoke, because life is full of surprices.
    Good luck

@@user-ih4fd9sf8x Trine was mentioning been reborn, and also to learn how to cope again as you used to, before you got depended on smoking your problems away.
Treat your self as a new born the first 5 years after quitting. Because like a new born you would be vulnerable, and sensitive.
During these 5 years teach your self to cope (slowly). And it could be things as simple as breathing exercises. Counting to 10 when irritated.
Simple small baby steps that we learned as children but took them forgranted with time.
During these first 5 years connect with your self. With the inner innocents / child. Its alright. You can use time looking at old pictures from when you were around 1-12 years old, ask parents how you learned to do this and that... have a moment together.
Reminiscing what your gym teacher told you, when panicking during gym class. How to take it slow, focus. Etc...
      Do some meditation, yoga, jogging.
Point is be good with your self the first 5 years after quitting. Take it slow. Connect with the inner child. And try not to take too much in exactly like a new born.
Good luck 💫 and happy (new) year 🤗

44year smoker, and I quit cold turkey 11months, 28 days ago. 3 tips: Concentrate on cutting down months before your quit date. Limit yourself to only 1 cigarette an hour, this will get you below 1 pack a day. When you quit, drink a lot of water. Have a bottle of water with you, all day. Lastly, the hardest cigarettes to quit are the "boredom cigarettes." Figure out something to do, to fill in those boredom cravings--take a walk, read a book, etc.
The REALLY good news: I had a Lung CT scan done. No signs of Cancer. It is NEVER too late to quit. You can do this, and I promise you, you'll be loving life when you get over that hump. Best of luck to you, God Bless. Remember, we're ALL born non-smokers.

Good plan. Even easier is to only smoke when you actually WANT to smoke, and only as much of the cigarette as you actually want. No beating yourself up. No suffering. No trying. This process keeps the nicotine at a steady state, and allows the natural body processes to get rid of the extra nicotine receptors the body had to make to accommodate the extra nicotine from routinely smoking cigarettes. Nobody has to quit cold turkey. I quit in 1975, started again in Iraq in 1991, quit using the same easy way when I came back to the States six months later.

Hope that all of the recent quitters are still in the fight! I stopped and started numerous times before quitting! Not only that, but spent twelve to fifteen years buying individual cigarettes for a dollar in order to reduce my intake! For that long I smoked one to fifteen cigarettes a day! ( it was typically ten or less) because, for some reason, I could not have a pack in front of me without smoking one after the other.( I had been a two to three pack a day chain smoker for aprox. Fifteen years) one day, I was once agian, smoking five cigarettes or less a day, and thought" if I can't do it now I never will" and quit once agian. Fourteen years now. One strong piece of advice: when the urge hits0, get Busey, physically or mentally, and before you know it the moment will hpppave passed. Fourteen years later, I would not trade the way I feel for anything in the world! KEEP UP THE FIGHT! YOU CAN DO THIS!

I still want a cigarette but my body isn't craving it like it was before. I have stayed away from everyone who smokes and tried to put it out of my mind. I'm never NEVER going back. You just have to stop. There is no easy way or trick to it. Just don't think about it, stay away from it, and chew gum. Hold a pencil or pen between your fingers if you have to. Since I quit a couple months ago, drive and performance have been noticeably better. Married 22 years and lately it’s been more adventurous and frequent than ever. One of the many benefits of ditching this awful addiction. 😁😁😁

I'd been wondering how much cigarettes could be at play. I'm wreaking havoc on my heart, lungs and circulatory system, I'm possibly causing a dopamine dump in my brain. These are things that can def screw with a sex drive. I'm hoping I see some improvements like you did.

I have never smoked a day in my life and don't suffer like smokers here in the comment section. But watching the video made me see how difficult it is for you and i really hope you all find the strength and direction to steer your way from it. I lived with a roommate for just 4 month and I never knew just how bad smoking can affect the body and mind. My roommate smoked 2 packs a day in the house. He was only 43 years old, former military ranger, fought in many places around the world, in fact he was shot on the battlefield and lived. Now after 20 years in the military and a habitual smokers he has a terrible cough an awful cough that is very persistent. One day he came back from the doctor with a new prescription , i said to him " so what's the pills for , the cough?" he said "no my heart". The doctor said his heart is affected and in some weird cycle loop is causing the severity of his cough. I jokingly but kinda seriously said "hey so you gonna quit now huh". He looked at me with a very serious look and said " no are you crazy man!". I laughed but knew he was dead serious about his commitment to cigarettes. This was the first time i ever experienced something like this, a 43 years old man with 2 young children, he should have just outright said to me he'd live long enough to smoke his next cigarette than see his children grow. A month later he had a wisdom tooth pulled, i was chatting with him the evening and said " holy cow that must hurt like a bitch". He immediately replied with " Man you know this doctor said to me you have to quit smoking at least long enough for the gum to heal and that the smoke would affect the healing process" he continued with his response to the doctor about temporarily quitting " I laughed and told the doctor I'm not quitting so let's figure something else out". The doctor gave him gauze to pack the gum every time he needed to smoke. I witness this guy go threw the hassle of packing his gum constantly to smoke, no surprise i took him to doctor to figure out why his gum wasn't healing.
Anyway, i wasn't living with a druggie nor a drunkard but if this is anything close to what it is like to feed a meth or alcoholic addiction then smokers have it hard and need to band together to kick the habit for good. I learned first hand that smoking cigarettes is just like a heroine user.Heroine may make you sell your bed and food and die earlier from an overdose, cigarettes are more subtle, the bodily effects are slower the social stigma is minimal. Watching my roommate for 4 months made me see that cigarettes affect your rational thought and ultimately leads to irreparable illness and still cause your death at any rate.
There are folks here talking about the issues they have that makes quitting difficult. It may be hard but you must stop or you'll end up like my roommate, an irrational addict willing to cause a gum infection, deepen a heart condition to continue the smoking addiction. Please folks.

There's a fight between me and my cravings, the nicotine craving is a sensation, exactly like hunger or thirst. It's a challenge not to smoke for 4 hours and i really can't quit. The solution for me: buy a boat, head into the storm, get thrown on a deserted island with no cigarettes or matches...Even then i would dry some leaves, learn how to make fire with sticks and smoke those dry leaves :)) I hate my life as a smoker.

I gave up cigarettes cold turkey after 20 years without any nicotine replacement aids and it was easier than I thought it would be. I was expecting the nicotine withdrawal to be really bad but in truth I didn't really notice it that much. The hardest part was changing my daily routine which felt weird to begin with but after a couple of weeks it started to feel a bit more natural and I could start enjoying the benefits of not smoking. I don't want to sound preachy here but if you are looking for an incentive to quit, apart from the obvious health benefits, just think of the money you'll save, not having to go outside and freeze in winter, not having to think about always having a lighter or how many ciggies you've got left, not having to deal with people who are offended by your air pollution, or your stinky, acrid breath! But most of all, you have the satisfaction of no longer being slugged with a huge tax by the government while the rest of your hard earned dollars go to a cigarette company that is thriving on your continued addiction to their product. You can be free of it, all you need to do is simply not put them in your mouth.

Thanks for your comment. It’s rare to have such a big health impact so early in life. In my experience, most of the people I know who smoke don’t worry too much about getting sick from it because its a chance they’re willing to take in order to have something they enjoy. But at the same time most of them would give it up if they felt like they could. My original message was directed at those people really.
Anti smoking messages are nearly always focussed on the health benefits but I think the benefits are much wider than that - especially financially. Here in Australia the cost of cigarettes is absolutely ludicrous.

I've always wanted to quit smoking but I always lacked the proper motivation. The thing that did it for me is understanding how dopamine is one of your best key to feeling great and be successful in life and how nicotine addiction consistantly prevent your base dopamine level from reaching a higher/normal level in which you feel better, function better, etc... Each time you smoke, you release a peak amount of dopamine and afterwards, you experience a crash in which your dopamine baseline gets LOWER than normal. Smoking is basically reinforcing your unhappiness and frustration in your core.
The best way, I think, to quit AND not relapse is giving your body a chance to feel the before/after effects. When you understand that not smoking makes you feel so much better and actually improves your life by improving your own potential, you will want to keep this state at all cost. But yes, I think people should study what is dopamine, how it affects you and how it is the root of EVERY addictions.
And doing so, you will also understand how quitting an addiction can very very easily make you start another one, to "fill" the void. That's why I really believe that understanding dopamine is key to have the absolute best mindset to quit any addiction. There is far, far more benefits to quitting smoking/sugar/porn/drinking, etc, than just the impact on your longevity. Dr. Andrew Huberman did an awesome video on dopamine, I can't recommend it enough !!!

I'm trying to learn what I should do/expect so I can have the greatest chance of succeeding, (hopefully the first time) I've been a smoker for over 20 years now and I've been wanting to quit for a while now but just wasn't ready. I was too afraid of failing but I realize that the only way to fail is by not trying at all. So now I'm learning as much as possible so today is my last day of smoking. I'm looking forward to the end result, being able to be proud of myself for working hard, staying committed and consistent, not making anymore excuses, learning more about myself, growing spiritually physically and mentally, all while quitting smoking and living a healthier life style. I'm so tired of being addicted to something that is slowly killing me while costing a fortune and me not being wise enough to make the choice to change for the better. Not anymore. Tomorrow's a new start to a better beginning! And best of luck to anyone who may be in my shoes, giving it there all to quit smoking. I'm proud of you, don't give up!!

My tricks to stop: Quit when you have the cold or flu (for me this was the only time that I didnt want to smoke at least for a few days), if you cant imagine coffee wiothout cigarette, switch to tea if you like it....I also have used tea (green tea) to replace cigarette after eating...This helped me a lot :) Also green tea prevented the weight gain...

I've been smoking since 13 years old (27 now), thanks to COVID19 I managed to quit. I've been trying to quit for years but the best I managed to do was periods of low intensity smoking and periods of very high intensity smoking. A few times I managed to abstain for a few months but I always came right back to smoking as soon as I either started going out or I was too sad or I was too happy. In the past when I was trying to quit it was very hard to restrain myself when I was out amongst smokers and not to ask someone a cig. If I drank even one or two beers it was next to impossible.
I've realised that the first step to quitting is being able to stop for those first 5-10 days and then to endure it for that first month. So eventually I caught covid that lasts around 2 weeks and surprisingly while I was having that fever I didn't think about smoking at all, no urge whatsoever. I stopped for a few months but then the summer came, clubs opened and I had some work relationship with a few of them and ofc I started smoking again but this time it was bad.
I'm a programmer and I wasn't able to concentrate for more than 15-30 minutes without having another cigarette. I'd get stuck on a problem and I wouldn't be able to solve it without going for a smoke first. As soon as I'd smoke I'd solve it with no issues at all. I've tried to stop smoking but I just wasn't able to work again so I thought that I'd stop after I finish this project or whatever.
Thankfully, I got COVID-19 again! Two weeks of excuse not to do any work and being bedridden truly served like a hard reset for me. This time I was prepared, mentally and I knew myself well enough to know what to expect and how to succeed. So I came out of those 2 weeks a non smoker. Slowly the urges started again but I was able to resist them. The key was to not go out basically. Explain my situation to my friends and politely reject all invites to any social gatherings or meet ups that might lead to me smoking. That means no meets for coffee where the smoking is allowed, no night outs etc. Doing errands was okay, going for a walk, doing sports was fine, lunches etc. I cut all alcohol from my life at that time. For birthdays and family gatherings that I needed to attend they'd try to force me to drink a shot with them, raise a glass or whatever but I never drank any alcohol no matter what they say (they didn't know why I didn't wanna drink).
Very very slowly the urges to smoke became less and less of an issue. Sometimes after 7 months after fully stopping had I been at the place with smokers and drank alcohol, I haven't gotten properly drunk since I've stopped (and I don't plan to since I don't really have the time or the energy for that). Life is good, sometimes I think about smoking, usually late at night before I fall asleep and then I can kinda feel the urge (almost like in my chest/lungs) but now it's very easy ti dismiss it and carry on with my life...
I've haven't touched a cigarette for a litter over a year and as it stands now I don't want to smoke ever again.
My life is completely changed, I can concentrate much better than before, I don't need a cigarette to function normally, I don't smell bad, I feel more stable minded, ever since I've fully stopped I've been improving on all areas of life. Also, for guys, I've never had any sexual problems but I couldn't believe the libido and performance after I stopped smoking. You'll find yourself being able to go multiple times without any breaks, it's just up, like forever, it's amazing. Actually it became annoying very quickly but still, it's amazing nonetheless!

Cravings for smokes after quitting splits into two kinds. One in your head (mind) one in your body. Your mind's cravings need time to readjust. Hold out. The bodily cravings are merely nothing but drug addiction. Your body demands it. Hold out for the first two weeks (the worst) and by a month or two it'd be gone.

I’m almost 42, started smoking at age 12/13. I quit for 2 years, the one and only time I ever quit and loved being a non smoker. Three months ago I went through a very stressful event in my life and started again. Probably only because I had already had 3 beers and I don’t normally drink anymore so while buzzed I bought a pack. I am up to a pack a day again and I hate myself. I’m so ashamed of myself. I have small children and tried to hide it at first but couldn’t any longer. I keep trying to smoke all of my cigarettes like 10 in a row to be done with the pack but the next evening keep buying more. I need the strength to quit again. I only quit because I was nursing my son. I started the week he stopped nursing. I feel like I have no reason to quit now which I know is not true but that is the only reason that ever got me to quit. Please pray for strength for me to do this again.

Started again two months ago, at first just asking a neighbour to give me one cigarette when we would meet for a chat, before I knew it, I was buying cigarretes again and smoking one pack in some days. Mijay12, that is _SOOOOO_ true! The only other time I quit, I was able to make it to two years (I was only able to quit with the help of Chantix though). And then I had a massive relapse and it has taken me another two years to try to quit again (I have just completed my fifth day of being smoke-free).
What got me was a *massively stressful period of time* that I was not prepared to mentally handle without slipping. One cigarette was all it took… And then I cheated again a couple weeks later, and then again a week later, and then a few days later... and next thing I know, I was back to smoking a pack a day!
You really do have to be on your guard for the rest of your life, using any other coping skill you can possibly imagine before resorting back to having that one cigarette (because you think you can handle it).
At the moment, I am struggling with destroying the one cigarette I have left in my pack from the night before I chose to quit. That is the mental part of it! After I had made it past the first day of being smoke-free (again, with the help of Chantix… I had been on the drug for three weeks at this point), I really thought I had smoked the rest of the pack when I quit, so I was veru disheartened to discover the next day that I actually had *ONE* left in there (knowing full well that one is all it takes).
I am trying to build up the will power to destroy that one cigarette so that it won’t be an easy option to slip when I get too strong of a craving or a really stressful moment in time. He is really crazy what a physical and psychological grip this drug called nicotine will have on us the moment we began consuming it. The scientists aren’t kidding when they say that quitting nicotine is more difficult than quitting heroin!
So after telling my story, I have to ask you: Have you tried quitting again since you wrote your remark here? If so, how did it go?? I sincerely hope you quit again and were finally successful this time (and remain successful!).

This is the most helpful information that sums up the process of quitting smoking and how to actually quit. Thank you so much; i’ve been in the consideration stage for a little while and i’m ramping up to the action stage but i have to prepare first. It’s hard with my husband smoking as well so we’re going to have to both make changes. Even if he is not ready to quit, he can’t smoke around me anymore. He’ll have to make an effort to separate himself from me when he wants a cigarette. I can tell i’m more serious about it at the moment than he is, but i won’t let his addiction perpetuate mine.

I'm 18 now and I quit smoking for exactly one month and one day. I have a twin brother who I share a room with and he still smokes, so sometimes the urge to smoke was very existing. but although you would think he made quitting smoking harder for me, he actually also helped me. every time is asked him for a cigarette although I was mostly joking, he always refused to give me one. And that's when I realized that if you could look trough these urges and you could think clear without being affected by the urge of nicotine flowing trough your brain, that you could rationalize why you stopped in the first place.
I also remember that I was often contemplating to have one hit of my brother's cigarette, but I quickly realized that if I went down that road I would ask him for a hit the next day and two days later it would be normal for me to take a hit everytime my brother smoked a cigarette. So I think that's a path a lot of people get on after they quit, and I also think that's how people fall back into their addiction.
So my advice is that if you choose to quit nicotine, you should always persist in even not smoking a single hit. So that means not creating habits accidentally like beginning to take one hit every time someone else smokes. smoking one hit every time you see someone you know smoking creates a spiral of getting back deeper and deeper into your addiction. That's because it's easy to create accidental bad habits while concentrating on breaking your important bad habits.
I hope this helps some people. You got this!!

What worked for me was a stopwatch. Every time I felt the urge, I would see how long it had been from the last smoke & talk myself into waiting another five minutes. Many times, I just forgot about it & by the time I had the urge again, sometimes an additional half-hour had passed. The urges became farther & farther apart until they stopped completely.
