Best way to sum up the difference between the 8th Gen Si and the 9th gen... 8th Gen: "VTEC just kicked in Yo!!!" 9th Gen: "Yo! Did VTEC just kick in??"
9th has ivtec and only kicks in above 5000 rpm which is a perfectly spaced powerband ive drove all of them and 9th is the best imo thanks to the CVT you can natural asperate tune them with a good bottom and top block mix from 9th and 8th gens and have the best of both worlds getting a red line of 8000 rpm and maintaining cvt and crazy like beginning to end horsepower around 260
Holy crap! I was scrolling through vids and saw my actual car in your thumbnail haha. It's the 93 hatch with the red seats. Here is some info on the car if anyone cares: 93 Civic CX with a b16a2 swap out of the 2000 Si. The thumbnail photo was taken at Barber Motorsports Park in front of the car museum. It had the old red Tenzo R (RECARO Replica) seats but was switched out with some Buddy Club fixed backs shortly after. Car had basic bolt-ons and a Spoon N1 exhaust. Koni adjustable struts with Hypercoil springs, Integra Type R RSB, Si Disk brake upgrade, Rota GT3 wheels running Hoosier A6 Slicks, Kirk Racing cage and gutted rear cabin interior. That was during the JDM trend so I had quite a few things imported from JPN (Vision Technica corner lights, JDM tails, Spoon radiator hoses, Spoon N1, JDM fogs I never installed and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember right off hand). It competed in SCCA from 2007-2014 where I finally won the SMF championship that final year. I still own the car but it has not been driven since 2015 and just been tucked away in the back of my shop. Just starting to restore it but in no rush. Here is a link to an old video of it on my other channel: ruclips.net/video/nE3oMNn9cL8/видео.html Enjoyed the video btw! My favorite Si was the 99-00 though I never owned one. I honestly never paid much attention to Civics past 2000. The years after went to a McPherson strut setup and ditched the fantastic double wishbone suspension of the 88-00s. Not sure if that means anything to the stance crowd but it was a deathblow to us racers.
My Civic Si is a 2013 9th gen, and I love it. The car drives and handles really well. The interior is great. It has the biggest engine, and it's the last NA car. I plan on keeping it for many years down the road.
@pashahillyard8763 I wish I did, but I totaled it about 3 years ago. I had just finished paying it off, then I crashed it into a ditch. I still miss it every day. Please drive safe out there.
It’s a generational thing. When you were exposed, when you bought your first civic, etc. If you fell in love with VTEC, you’ll always have a soft spot for it
I had a Kraftworks supercharged 2010 si coupe and honestly it was amazing. Stage 4 racing clutch, upgraded suspension, header, fuel pump, fuel injectors and exhaust. I got it up to 400 hp on the dyno. The thing killed mustangs. The extra 900 rpm from the 9th gens sets it apart tho. BEST SI GENERATION! 8th gen🥰
Just traded in my 9th gen 2015 si which i loved for a 10th gen 2019 si coupe. I absolutely love this thing for two reasons. In my opinion best body style yet for this day and age. And that turbo is legit. Plus sport mode 🔥🔥🔥
The first USDM Civic Si was a Gen 3 Civic introduced in 1986. There was also a 4th gen Si which was amazing. It had the double wishbone suspension like the 5th gen. The 5th gen was the first USDM with VTEC...yes the 1992 Si had VTEC, even if the valve cover didn't say it. It was a single cam model though.
I don't know if I fully agree with this video, but still, good job on the vid, I'm a 9th fan myself but the way I see it, if it's a Honda, I'll drive it
Great overview, thank you. VTEC was special. You are right about the 8th gen. That said, as an all around car, I love my 10th gen SI. The chassis is amazing, brakes are insanely good, adaptive dampers, etc. Oh, and more midrange torque. Low redline sucks, and vtec was so cool, but the tradeoffs are there in spades. Now if only it had all this plus VTEC. Bone stock 10th gen is still a driver's car. Hard to argue with 0.97 g on a skidpad.
I’ve had the 7th gen, 8th gen and now have a turbo 9th gen si. All of them being tafetta white. I have to say even though I’ve only had the 9th gen for about 9 months my favorite is definitely the 8th gen si
Before I got my 6th gen si, I was never a fan of the si I thought they were too common since everyone owned one. But after selling my rsx and buying my 2000 civic si, the car made me change my thought about it, it may not be the fastest but for its size the power and the torque was just enough and the handling was amazing too. Bought my 2000 fbp civic in 2015, now it’s 2019 and I still have it.
I’ve owned a 8thgen coupe stanced and everything . Honestly the 8thgen platform is amazing. Such a true Honda Civic to me. And it was in my opinion the last true Honda Civic they made.
Going to have to agree with you on the 8th gen. Last Civic to have the true heart and soul of Vtec. but like you said, the 10th gen is the future. And most likely the car I buy next.
I had an 8th Gen, traded it in for a 10th Gen - I am VERY happy with my purchase BUT am looking for a daily 8th gen bc there is nothing like that high revving NA engine....The 10th gen is better in every way though! the 8th was just amazing! Wish I never traded it in!
My Favorite the 8gen si.. not only that its the last of the k20z3 with the hi rev of 8rpm, it was also the first introduction of mugen in the US. and came with the first 4 doors.. ❤
Heard him say the 6th generation was "more practical because of having 4 doors" . Doubt any North America civic sis aside from maybe a Canadian Si(usdm ex) came in a 4 door as a gen 6. Just got my 8th gen fully road worth *thank GOD*
I own an Ep3 with a K20a2 (simple Cai, exhaust, header setup) na tuned to about 223hp and I love it, but I can understand why it wasn't popular at all, If anything , the 8th gen and the EK9 were the reason I fell in love with Si's and Honda overall
The 8th generation Civic Si also got helical type limited slip differential, in which the "acura rsx -usdm" did not nor did the previous generation Civic sis
Sergio Aguirre it’s a different version of the same engine... lol. You think they built a brand new 2.4? Don’t be silly. It’s brand new but boasts the same exact specs? That seems pointless... no?
Sergio Aguirre lol. I have been driving Honda’s since before you were born I bet. 😄😄😄 sorry you thought your new Acura had some exclusive engine... it’s recycled.
In Canada we had the 4th generation civic si. It started in 1988 with the CRX Si then in 1989 with the Civic Si. The Si came with Honda's carryover D-series SOHC 1.6-liter inline-four producing 108 horsepower. The 1989-1991 Civic Si included air conditioning and fog lights. The Si made do with manual steering without power assist. If you didn't live through this era, you'll have to take our word for it as to how vastly far ahead of the competition Honda was in 1991. Line up the Civic of that era against any domestic small car, and things weren't even close: The Hondas were built to a higher standard, with consistent fits and panel gaps, and the cars drove with a sophistication American economy cars couldn't touch. Sure, the Honda cost a little more, but you are also more likely to come across one of these Civics today than, say, a Ford Escort of the same vintage. This was and remains a key appeal of Honda products. "Courtesy of Motor Trend"
You shouldn't be disappointed with the 10th gen. A simple tune and cai I'm making 250whp and around 300wtrq. 35.5mpg city and its $23k out the door price Its beautiful and the interior is nice. I miss the vtec but the turbo L15b is bae Prl is making 600whp and 10 second 1/4mile with a huge after market support. The 10th gen is the best
Sick video my guy! When I’m not working and driving my 2013 Chevy Silverado I drive a 2012 civic si with full bolt ons and cams. My wife drives a 2018 accord sport which is basically same engine as the 10th gen si and she can keep up with me when we ran them against each other. It’s amazing how far Honda has come!!
Rob Cameron - Car Vlogs Correction:the accord touring has the same platform as the type R which is the 2.0t but the sport comes with the 1.7t which is what the Si has. Sorry bro for correcting you.
Frank Liked your video and I agree 8th gen was great as well as 9th gen but the added low- mid range torque of the 2017 is really great. Hard to beat. But I do miss Vtec. Hopefully it will return with future Si.
So far to me my 9th gen k24z is so much powerful then my wife's 10th gen. Yah it has turbo but turbo will cause problems really fast especially on a 1.5L lol. Compared to a k24 no turbo vtech revving 4 banging monster! I still love the 10th gen especially the exterior and interior design. K24 with k20 heads is the best setup when it comes to vtech high performance street fun. Thanks for the video
I think the main problem on that 1.5 liter more so than turbo is that direct fuel injection. The intake cams are gonna get carbon deposits overtime with no gas cleaning them. Oil catch can is a must on direct injection
I absolutely love my 10th gen Si (2019). For me it strikes the perfect balance between practicality, power, and comfort. It gets excellent mileage when I'm toting the family around and is still fun to drive when I want to put my foot down.
10th Gen is the 1st turbo with DI engine Honda is manufacturing. I have read DI egineers have issue with carbon buildup in the intake valves due to where the injectors are located. DI engines inject fuel directly into the cylinders where combustion takes place. Because of this the valves can get very dirty with carbon buildup and will affect the engine's performance over time. The carbon buildup is a result of oil blowby. Whereas the PI engines inject fuel above the valves and in a way cleans them prior to reaching the the cylinders.I heard a catch can can be a solution to prevent the oil blowby to re-circulation back into the intake valves via pvc valve. The reason for me to bring this up is because I purchased a 2018 Civic si. Great to drive until I found out about potential issues with DI engines.
I use to get 56mpgs out of my ej2 automatic highway. And 58mpgs after I swapped the d15b7 for a b18b1 manual transmission S80 with Type R internals, P06 ecu manual transmission converted. But with the b18b1 140 bhp and 127 lb⋅ft. compared with the 102 hp and 98 lb·ft. Is a big improvement..
I just ditched my 2017 WRX for a 2009 Si 8th gen with 44k miles. Couldn’t be happier! I don’t ever want to get rid of this thing! Great video BTW with loads of detail on all of the North American Si’s!
Just saw this and I must say that as years go by, the 8th gen holds its position as the GOAT, making it it’s last hashtag, 8th gen, FG2 and now The Si GOAT, it’s the last and top dog of it’s class, simple yet advanced tech, awesome audio sound straight from factory and not to mention we got a MUGEN colab on the 8th gen.
If I still had my Ep3, I would probably Turbo it, Or Super charge it. If any car is Underpowered with not enough Torque and needs Boost, Its Definitely the Ep3
Swap the RSX Type S head (K20A2) on then boost it. Would also need ECU swap and tune. The K20A3 was a fuel efficiency targeted engine. VTEC was only on the intake side instead of both exhaust and intake side which made VTEC engage lower than normal but only produced 160hp which is relative to the 99/00 Si. I miss my 03 Si as it was fun to drive. You could have also done the VTEC killer setup which locks the VTEC cam lobes to be fully engaged at all times. Only problem is that the engine bay was WAY too cramped and hard to work on unless you deleted a lot of things like A.C. PS etc. If I could find another one in good condition I would totally buy one and modify it again. The obvious best swap for it would be the JDM K20A swap producing over 200hp that this generation Civic was given in Japan which was the Civic Type R not Si. (Specs on that are different per source but it was the best K20 variant with the most power 220hp*) *could be wrong on power number but I know it's higher than the K20Z3 and K20A2.
@@hotdropknockdndc681 That would be really fun. It would be fun Kanjo style it. The visibility in the Ep3 was awesome too

8th and 9th gen are by far the best SI ever made.. They are just all around the best.. They are the last 2 remaining NA models and they have the best engines (k20/k24).. The ability to mod NA and boost is almost limitless. The new 10th gen is a nice car and all, but with that baby Honda Fit motor, and needing boost just to hit similar numbers to an NA k20/k24, you are very limited with the 10th gen.. There is no option of an NA build, and with the single port DI, it also limits how the head breathes. I like the EM2 and older models as well as well, but more for their chassis to K-swap lol
All Tim The first generation CRX is a Civic and still had a Civic badge on the back. The second generation was also still a Civic. Both cars share parts with Civics. Both Civic and CRX models had Si trims. I’m not sure what your point is. Source: I own a 1985 CRX Si, the very first model year of the Si trim.
I owned a 2 em1’s and loved it, but now I bought a FA5 and it is rite up there with my AP2.Honda has always had a special place in my heart all the fun memories, all the dumb things I did in them when I was younger now I’m pushing 40 and just wanna enjoy the classic Honda. Although I do have a type r on my radar if we’re talking new new. Good job on the video 👍
Am I the only one who prefers the 6th gen the most to this day?? One word: visibility. Also a very forgiving clutch, really nice balance, and an incredible aftermarket. Had mine for 4 years/70k miles before it was stolen and scrapped about 5 years ago. You’re turning me on to the 8th gen a little though! 9th gen does have nicer interior that would be the only deciding factor between the 2 imo.
8th gen si is best because it's the last one with dual cam profile VTEC and a engine that can rev up to 8000rpm and to 8600rpm with a reflash. The 9th gen is good, but it's missing exhaust side VTEC so when doing a NA setup you can't make as much easily as the K20Z3. I feel like they should of put the K24A2 in the 9th gen instead if that was possible.
It’s actually why I clicked the video to begin with. Was hoping to see somebody talk about it since it never gets light. Sadly, nothing was mentioned about it, and the 5th gen civic started the lineup. That’s when I clicked off a little disappointed to say the least. Was excited since I really liked the video up to that point
1986 si was my first car in the early 90's ... loved it .1600 twin cam , the reason I clicked on this video too ... and stopped 1 minute and 50 seconds into it...
I'm going 9th gen. Only because of the bigger displacement engine over the 10th gen, also you could add a turbo to the 9th gen and spank that 10th gen. No replacement for displacement
6th and 8th Gen Si's hands down! I love my 10th gen that I own currently but I really wish they would've bumped up the power to at least 230hp just to continue to compete with the GTI as it did for decades....230 HP/ 210tq and I think it would've went along with the trend of power increase but with all the turbo 4 bangers, it's got the least HP in it's class.....This would've had a great Focus ST fighter but it's just down on the power....
Am in love of the 6th gen hatch or coupe because they look good and have huge aftermarket support and i personally like the look of it but am debateing on hatch or coupe tho
I've owned several Si models over the years. All bought new starting with a 1988 CRX Si, 1999 Si Coupe, 2006 Si Coupe, and currently have a 2018 Si Coupe. By far, my favorite is the 2018. I still bounce off the rev limiter as I am so used to higher revs, but it is so nice.
@@Bran.s2k I can confirm that I own a 9th gen 2014 its 205 NA but im thinking about doing a 8th and 9th gen block mix to get around 260 NA and 8000 rpm redline best part I get to keep CVT and iVtec
Robert Chavez ik i might sound dumb but... didn’t only the 2014 civics (205 hp increase model) and up get the cvt? And I thought cvt was for the automatics, how tf are they cvt manual? I’m confused man
10th gen civic is does offer a more usable powerband from 2500-5500. That turbo engine can be tuned for less money with a KTuner or hondata easily bumping power from 205hp to 230hp and 198tq to 240tq. This is much less expensive than traditional bolt-ons.
Well with most 8th gens going for 7k or less compared to a 24k civic. 10k in mods is still less than a new si. And definetly more power. You still have to take the value of the car into play. Or you can buy a fully built one as well and it would still be cheaper. Again value of the car plays a big factor
I agree with Jesus saavedra, also I would preferably stay with the factory tune and only modify as far as bolt ons, to get that promised engine life expectancy and of course, regular maintenance comes in to play in any case
What's your favorite generation Si?!
I agree with you about the 8th gen and it being the last pure Si, but I think the purest is the 92. Love that thing. Great video
I like the 99-2000

Its beautiful and the interior is nice. I miss the vtec but the turbo L15b is bae
Prl is making 600whp and 10 second 1/4mile with a huge after market support. The 10th gen is the best
@Bryce Czirr no it's not
Civic for jdm fanboys, gti for autobahn and German fanboy...
@Bryce Czirr I'm sure si gets better gas mileage

@@timmtrinh depends what were talking about. Gti is iron block. Overall though, yeah, it should he more reliable
Even better actually, the new Accord sport shares the same platform as the Type R 👍
Rob Cameron - Car Vlogs Correction:the accord touring has the same platform as the type R which is the 2.0t but the sport comes with the 1.7t which is what the Si has. Sorry bro for correcting you.
@@shaunanthony9421 Ahhh gotcha! Good to know.
@@shaunanthony9421 The Si has a 1.5t
Frank Liked your video and I agree 8th gen was great as well as 9th gen but the added low- mid range torque of the 2017 is really great. Hard to beat. But I do miss Vtec. Hopefully it will return with future Si.
Yep I totally agree!
O love the 7th gen, but when people talk about an Si, I only think of 6th gen. Period.
Really ? Only 6th gen?
when people say Si you think EM1 nuff said lol
John Gotti yup
John Gotti YUP
Yupppp !
Indeed
Hell yeah
I have the 8th and 9th gen, and I absolutely love my 8th gen. All day, everyday!
I like the 7th gen because nobody else does. In Canada our Si was your EX
yea the em2 si is the most beautiful civic in my opinion
I frequently average 32 mpg on my 2012 Si. Driving in the mountains I can be in 6th and not find it necessary to downshift. I enjoy the torque.
2009 8 Gen Si V tec . I got one in my garage w 12000 miles. It’s my weekend car.
The best Si is a 9th gen bottom end K24 with the head from the K20 8th gen
I have a civic 8gen and it has a k24a2 engine and I am as factory, I did it because I like that model among all the SI
Had a 6th gen civic lx back when I was in high school in 2009. Sold it in 2013 and miss it. 5-6th gen was my favorite.
I absolutely love my 10th gen Si (2019). For me it strikes the perfect balance between practicality, power, and comfort. It gets excellent mileage when I'm toting the family around and is still fun to drive when I want to put my foot down.
Get a ktuner or hondata flashpro and it'll be even funner!
EM1 99-00 Civic Si-R of course the blue one 🙄
I have a blk one, I love it
Black always look amazing 😎🔥🤷♂️
They never made a civic SIR for the states
those are classic
Donny P. Si-r in the us was sold as the Si
i love the look of the 9th gen, but my favorite is also the 8th gen because the motor is a beauty'
I bought a 99 Si in March of 1999. Had many others since and that 99 is still my favorite of all. I’ve had two RSX Type S 02 and 06 as well.
1991 Hatchback SI It was great car and very sporty
10th gen shit lol
No mention of the 3rd or 4th gen si?
I dont think those were available in the us, he said that hed only talk about us ones
@@williamruiz9186 yes they were available my dad got a 78 civic and I had a 85 1500 S and 91 si
Wow, you completely forgot about the 4th gen Si, and yes, it was available in Canada. The 3rd gen wasn't sold in Canada, but it WAS sold in the U.S.
Right? I have a 1987 Si in black ... also have a 2015 Si 4 door .... beyond that cool video.
@@dvlpup03 cool! Keep the '87 as long as you can, they are amazing cars 👍
Redline may have shown as 8000 on the 8th gen but mine will happily rev past that to 8300 (and yes it's bone stock including the ecu).
My favorite is a 7th gen with a 8th gen motor!!
I just ditched my 2017 WRX for a 2009 Si 8th gen with 44k miles. Couldn’t be happier! I don’t ever want to get rid of this thing! Great video BTW with loads of detail on all of the North American Si’s!
That’s quite a downgrade. What made you switch?
I own a 9th gen and wanted a 2017 wrx,wat make u wanna downgrade?
That’s not a down grade that’s an up grade
Dude. How long did this video take to make?? By the end; you have a goatee
Just saw this and I must say that as years go by, the 8th gen holds its position as the GOAT, making it it’s last hashtag, 8th gen, FG2 and now The Si GOAT, it’s the last and top dog of it’s class, simple yet advanced tech, awesome audio sound straight from factory and not to mention we got a MUGEN colab on the 8th gen.
i like the 9th gen Si.
I agree with you on the 8th gen being the best, I owned 1, loved it miss it. now I have a 10th gen which is awesome IMO!!
EP3 7th gen came with a 5 speed btw
Couldn't you argue that the crx si to be the first civic si? It literally was called a civic crx right? @Rob Cameron
9th gen hands down.
Why is that bro.
I also agree with the 8th gen, thats what I want for my first car.
(Specs on that are different per source but it was the best K20 variant with the most power 220hp*)
*could be wrong on power number but I know it's higher than the K20Z3 and K20A2.
The Civic si came out way earlier than 92 get it right

Although I do have a type r on my radar if we’re talking new new. Good job on the video 👍
i love my 2015.
But the real point... is that everybody knows somebody that loves a honda. lol
Awesome video. I have a 8 gen 2011... love it.
Also please don't eat us. Thanks!
I had an 8th, now I have a 9th. I’m waiting out the 10th gen to see what 11 brings.

Left out the 3rd and 4th gens. Both were in offered in an SI trim in the US. Owned 2 4th gen SI's such fun cars.
6:17 - "I enjoy the 92 (5th generation) hatchback more". Shows a picture of a 1996-1998 Civic 6th generation.
Yes you are correct
Also kept referring to the EM1 as a 4 door sedan. Quite a few errors.
3rd and 4th gen civics also have si models
Yep completely ruined the video up for me.
9th gen is the best!
In your eyes..
I love the EM1 because my pops and uncle had them but lately I’ve been crazy for the FD2 style civic
You completely forgot the best civic to ever exist. The 1986 civic si
Yep, and that's also my personal favorite Si
It’s actually why I clicked the video to begin with. Was hoping to see somebody talk about it since it never gets light.
Sadly, nothing was mentioned about it, and the 5th gen civic started the lineup. That’s when I clicked off a little disappointed to say the least. Was excited since I really liked the video up to that point
Yeah that was very disappointing not to see the 1st 2 civic Sis
1986 si was my first car in the early 90's ... loved it .1600 twin cam , the reason I clicked on this video too ... and stopped 1 minute and 50 seconds into it...
I'm going 9th gen. Only because of the bigger displacement engine over the 10th gen, also you could add a turbo to the 9th gen and spank that 10th gen. No replacement for displacement
When you talk it feels like your getting angry... move back a little , it would help!
@Sergio Aguirre I have seen stock 10th gen SI's on a dyno and they produce 200hp/210 lb/ft to the front wheels.
@Sergio Aguirre Sorry, thought you meant to the front wheels - yeah 230 crank hp with about 15% drivetrain loss is around 200!
8TH Gen FA5 ALL DAY!
Just picked up a 9th gen. It’s a pretty good balance with more modern features and DD ability but still has VTAAAACcCcCcc!

Am in love of the 6th gen hatch or coupe because they look good and have huge aftermarket support and i personally like the look of it but am debateing on hatch or coupe tho
2000 Honda civic si... even better with a k swap / 6 speed
I love my 8th gen coupe. It will never be the same. Best civic ever.
Em1 gang
I've owned several Si models over the years. All bought new starting with a 1988 CRX Si, 1999 Si Coupe, 2006 Si Coupe, and currently have a 2018 Si Coupe. By far, my favorite is the 2018. I still bounce off the rev limiter as I am so used to higher revs, but it is so nice.
I thought my 9th gen had 205 hp
YogiCeballos honestly that’s what i thoughts too 🤔 but turns out he’s only only looking at the hp from the 2012-13 models. 2014-15 has 205 hp
I’m confused man
Correction, 8th gen Si had an 8300 rpm redline, not 8000!
Technically the redline is 8000, and the rev limiter is 8300!
9th gen all the way
10th gen civic is does offer a more usable powerband from 2500-5500.
I feel bad for the 1.5l engine working so hard.
The ep3 never had a 6spd. and the redline is 6800rpm on the k20a3. Where did you get this info from?
rev limit is 7500* on the k20A3
GAS * yeah i know. I said redline not rev limiter.
