Better Call Saul - Season 2 Review

- Season 2 of Better Call Saul continues Jimmy's journey to becoming Saul Goodman. Despite the continuously top-notch writing, I felt season 2 was a bit of a retread of season 1.

BTW That tequila is the same kind that Gus Fring used to poison Don Eladio in Breaking Bad! Just noticed that on rewatch.
This season was a great follow up to the previous one. I'm going to be saying that alot. Cause where we are now with the tone of the series and the pacing, and the little clues being dangled is so different than these early seasons. It makes me appreciate them more. I like that seasons 2 is a look into who Jimmy really is. Just like breaking bad, better call saul gets better with age. Great video Cody.
13:04 Injecting Leonel with the drug that killed him in Season 3 of Breaking Bad was probably satisfying for Mike after the twins threatened Kaylee a few years before.
That blooper was hysterical. Well played. I can see your negative points although with the motif of the franchise where the same consistent chances to make the same mistakes slow characters despite a way out fits for Mike and Saul. This is probably on the same level as season 1 for me and has a few more pop! moments. This show is probably up their with Xmen First Class as the best prequels ever. 8.5/10
To me it just felt like a continuation of season 1, or the second part of season 1, and I was completely fine with that. The pacing may be slower than BB, but I find it all so damn entertaining and even slightly more rewatchable than BB. Something about the character development and monologues. The set pieces are also probably my favorite of any show. When they first announced the prequel series, I was a bit disappointed because I knew they were gonna go down that road, but I thought it was going to be either about Gus' life leading up to New Mexico or a story coming from Mike's perspective. With how they incorporated everything with even just the very first episode killed any disappointment I had. BCS took a character I didn't care for and made me a fan of (Jimmy/Saul) and took a character I loved (Mike) that became my favorite television character ever.
I think your spot on about the pacing. While it doesn't bother me, I have a friend who just recently stopped watching because he said it wasn't grabbing him. Your enjoyment of the show relies alot on how much you just enjoy watching these characters do their thing.
I thought this was a great follow up to S1. The main narrative of Jimmy & Chuck + more focus on Mike was incredible. I fell in love with this show after this seasons finale.
This is where it really picked up for me and now I love it just as much as breaking bad possibly.
Much love from the UK Cody! 🇬🇧
Love your Better Call Saul reviews. I'm so excited to see Walter this season!
All of the people talking about BCS being so "slow" seem to think that BB was all gun fights and explosions. There were plenty of slow episodes, character building segments, and long, awkward family meals, especially in season 1.
l like better call saul, in fact l rewatched the series in preparation for season 6 but l must say that l disagree with you, breaking bad does not seem to waste time, walter gets diagnosed with cancer and everything starts to unfold quite fast, there is even a dead body walter and jesse have to deal with at the end of episode 2 if l´m not mistaken, but being all that said l think better call saul is a great show.
@@feliperios3496 I didn't say they wasted time. I said there were plenty of slow episodes that built up character and situations. Yes, Walt was diagnosed in ep 1, but it wasn't until 4 that he told his family, etc. Saul had Tuco grab him at the end of ep 1, and that resolve, pretty spectacularly, by the end of 2 Both have about an equal number of action-packed episodes and slow buildups.
I don't think that Saul is any slower than BB. But, that seems to be the perception that people have.
@@laurettelaliberte8864l see where you come from and it's a good point but l still think some of the characters in breaking bad were constantly in more danger whereas in better call saul it wasn't up until season 5 that l really thought saul was gonna get hurt picking up Lalo's money in the desert.
And maybe that's why some people never gave this show a chance
BCS has just been less eventful in the first two seasons though. And be honest, if you didn’t fall in love with these characters while watching breaking bad you probably wouldn’t have sat through these slow episodes
Great review Cody. I remember thinking season 2 was very slow watching It week to week but re-watching the season multiple times since, season 2 Is fantastic and the first 2 seasons are excellent In hindsight. Looking forward to the season 3 review. Better Call Saul just gets better and better season after season and season 6 after 2 episodes looks like It's gonna be the best season of the show.
This show is nothing short of a miracle.
So this was my favorite season of the show until season 5. Season 1 was starting things up, the first half of season 3 is great but runs out of steam a bit after Chicanery, and season 4 is a little frustrating because you have to watch Jimmy not be a lawyer for ten episodes. But from what I’ve read and heard, I seem to be in the minority there. I just love Kim and Jimmy’s relationship this season, and also the arc of the doctored mesa verde docs is one of my favorites in both shows. And it’s the kind of storyline that couldn’t really happen in breaking bad so it’s kind of special to this show.
Anyway, great review! I love every season of this show and I’m one of those people who actually prefer this show to breaking bad so I just wanted to chime in!
I agree with everything you wrote
Hey Cody I'm not watching this whole video only here commenting(and liking) because I haven't finished Breaking Bad yet but I'm the same person who asked you if I should watch BCS before BB on Twitter so just wanted to say thank you! I'm currently on season 2 episode 4 and when I'm done I'll do BCS and then El Camino! Thanks again Cody!
I wish I could watch these shows for the first time again. Enjoy.
With how BCS is going to wrap up, I'd suggest Breaking Bad first. The show itself is somewhat of a spoiler due to the flash forward scenes. Also, going into BCS after watching BB did enhance the show. It's great on it's own but you do get more out of the characters that way. It's really interesting seeing side characters developed in BCS after seeing them on BB.
I guess it’s just me but I really did enjoy season 2. I lost my mind when hector came on screen. Once I saw him it made me think about hector back story especially before breaking bad. I think the season was paced perfectly to set us up for season 3.
Now you have me wanting to watch it again. I do agree, it is a “downshift”. My mom wants to start watching it and I advised her to start with season 3. I don’t really enjoy all the Mesa Verde stuff but understand how it’s necessary to the storyline. It definitely got better as the seasons progressed.
That is incredibly silly to force your mom to miss out on entire charcter arcs and exposition cause you dislike the lawyer plotline. Just plain ignorant
@@itzYonko , I’m not forcing my mom to do anything. I know what interests her and what doesn’t. I also didn’t say I “ disliked” it I said I didn’t “enjoy” it. Move along.
@@brandih9802 What a bad faith arguement. Sure you aren't forcing her, but its cetainly a form of coercion to make sure she skips all the important details and skip to the action sequences.
Season 3 forward challenges breaking bad good. If you want the. Ultimate payoff you do have to sit through the boring stuff season 1 and 2
Can't agree with this being the worst. Season 2/3 is some of the best of the show
4 was an incredibly slow season for me, and I get the point of it.. but it was hard to get through.
I just want to thank you watched one of your old videos with dumb drums and you said you like the horror movie frailty and I’ve never seen it and I have about two hours before work I said fuck it I watched it and I absolutely loved it thank you so much
Lmao 20:19 nice save with the breaking bad theme
I’m just starting season 3 it’s a little odd that there showing sauls life and mikes life and they don’t have anything to do with one another (until breaking bad) I like mikes story better than jimmy’s in season 2
I really need to give this show another shot. Btw Link to Sean’s video in the description not working for me.
Hey Cody will you ever review man of steel and by the way great video I love breaking bad
Apparently Bob Odenkirk portrayed the likeness of Bob from the original Halloween, in Halloween kills
The season that got me hooked
5
8:23 thay guys name is Ken I believe, he was in Breaking Bad the guy who's car Walter blew up at the gas station cause Ken was an absolute asshole.
I’m rewatching these now and I think it’s better the second time. I expected it to be like BB but it’s not. It’s more of a psychological drama especially with Chuck and Jimmy
Season 2 was fantastic.
The crybaby squat cobbler was one of the best moments in tv history
8:56 LOL
Bruh. New episode had me disappointed and satisfied at the same time. Fuck.
Man I love this show so much its as good as breaking bad to me can't wait for episode 3 today
What is the outro metal song?
Shows in the BB universe are one of the rarity of shows that get better with each season.
I’m starting season 6, tonight
But I would have to agree, this is the worst season of the Breaking Bad/ better call Saul universe. And you know what’s wild! It was still great television. I was watching this show live on AMC, during its run. I stopped watching season 2, episode 3. Glad I gave the show another chance, with my girlfriend. We love it. Can’t wait to get university of Samoa gear!
I mike he's the man 💪
is it a good show? i've always been skeptical.
Season 2 may be the weakest of the BCS seasons, but it's still a damn good season. I loved the upcoming tension between Jimmy and Chuck, as well as the epic confrontation between Mike and Tuco, and the last 2 episodes had me filled up with anxiety, even the ending left me SPEECHLESS! Not one of the best seasons, but a good follow-up to the first. 9/10
It saul goodman
Might be an unpopular opinion but Season 2 was a vast improvement over Season 1 for me.
I stopped BB after season 2. Really did not get the hype. But BCS is amazing and it's because I really enjoy Jim & Mike's characters
You need to get into season 3 and you’ll see what I’m saying
That's a shame, season 2 is by far BB's worst season. Season 3 onwards are solid S tier material
Bro you spoiled the later seasons. You should try n stay off of mentioning what happens in seasons past 2 considering a lot of people watch these videos after each season
Yeah thats my case
I was gonna watch this video until seeing the thumbnail.
Grown man with his mouth open looking dumbfounded, is this geared towards 9 year olds?
Gotta grow up and expand into new things, looking like the majority of goofballs is hardly unique.
