- M. Night Shyamalan is one of the most divisive directors of our generation. With some of his movies being hailed as masterpieces while quite a few others garner a ton of hate, he has an interesting filmography to say the least. Here is my ranking of all M. Night Shyamalan movies.

Your ranking for the happening was actually a hilarious twist 😂🤣
Shyamalan, for better or worse, is certainly a unique director.
Unique for what? Spitting in the faces of fans of Avatar The Last Airbender like myself? Shyamalan deserves to be kicked out of the industry for what he did to my favorite animated show of all time. I hate The Last Airbender movie so much and I will never forgive Shyamalan or give him a chance.
You mean overrated? Dude sucks as a director. It’s a fucking joke that someone like him can get into the industry and be given budgets to make Hollywood movies. Literally all his movies are mediocre as fuck. Yes even Signs 🙄 there’s a reason even Scary Movie took the piss out of that.
M Night literally has no talent, all of his movies are embarrassing to watch.
@@josefengelhardt2767lol calm down bud he has made some masterpieces like unbreakable alone is absolutely phenomenal
People just can't grow up. Last Airbender was bad yes, but throwing a creative man out of an industry that has a drought of it is just whiny
Unbreakable is one of my favorite movies ever made! It’s truly a masterpiece.
I just dont understand it.. It was easily one of my least favorite shyamalan movies and the worst superhero movie of the trilogy in my eyes..
Masterpiece is a bit generous
i walked out of the theater halfway through and asked the girl at the box office for my money back, only time i’ve ever done that.
My least favorite of the trilogy. I don’t get why everybody blows their load over it.
Keep this in mind, I wasn’t no horror fanatic growing up. When I saw Signs, as a young boy, I barely could sleep afterwards. The birthday scene, the Roof scene, the baby monitor, the music, everything about that film freaked me the fuck out. Still to this day it freaks me out but I absolutely LOVE IT!!!
I think everyone jumped in he theater when that part happened! I love how tense it was & right in the middle of the scene Joaquin Phoenix says to the kids in the video "Move! Vamanos Children, Vamanos!" Lol
He seems to either hit a game winning home run or strikes out on three pitches.
He's the Reggie Jackson of movies.
I didn’t think Old was THAT bad, but I also saw it at a theater where you could order food and drinks from your seat
Studio?
Hollywood Palms?
It’s called Flix Brewhouse
Unbreakable is probably my favorite, but the sixth sense is super close. Love the list Cody!
Personally i loved OLD, but it's always fun to hear other people's opinions and actually being grown up about it and not starting an arguement just because someone doesn't have the same opinion as you. That's why i love watching your videos.
Wow! You're the first person I've seen that say they like Old
@@001spring I'll be the second!
idiots!! lol jp
@@001springQuite a few people do. Critic reviews and audience reviews were all over the place. I think it hits for people that like the concept being handled with such breadth. The critics are also right that the breadth is the problem, and thus it lacks depth, and a lot of the awkward writing is almost necessary to move through so much so quickly.
I like Old, too.
And I'm pretty sure Ima like the upcoming Trap, too.
Cody: "This video isn't actually late, it's just when you need it"
Me: *What a Twist*
I agree with “the Happening” is comedy gold
I actually really like The Village despite the plot twist.
That film could have been great with maybe one more pass at the script. The acting is great and the photography is beautiful. It's also an outlier in that it's the one film of his where the twist is that the supernatural is bogus, and there's a rational explanation. In his other films, the characters have to end up accepting crazy things like ghosts and Narfs and killer trees.
James Newton Howard's score is amazing. Just the over all sound of the film is genius.
@@robcressey7228 I love the song that plays when Joaquin phoenixs character grabs Bryce Howard Dallas characters hand as they escape the creature into the house. It’s powerful.
I love the part when she is starting her trip through the woods with the stream and the trees and the grey sky and that violin...perfect scene.
early 2000s Judy Greer can’t miss
Remember seeing The 6th sense in theatre as a kid, blew my mind 🤯
I can't take signs seriously after watching Scary Movie 3
The scary movie franchise ruined horror films 😂
I love the scene where The dude says something like Can I get a ride home after killing the wife , that part had me cracking up
Great list Cody! Was looking so forward to this video. Super happy you have Signs so high. I absolutely love that movie. Great performances, and super creepy. Really a special film in my opinion. And Unbreakable… saw that in the theaters and was blown away. Personally, I love the choices he made in Glass. Keep rocking on man!
I'm so happy you put out so much content cus as soon as in think there can't be another vid I'd enjoy there it is in my fyp 💚
Great ranking! My favorite is Signs, I love the ideas and the final act is great. The writing and characters feel off, but still a good story. I'm one of the few people that likes The Village, I agree with what you said, but I love the mood and the monsters. Totally agree with you on Lady in the Water and The Happening, both are odd but fun to watch for how bad they are. Great video Cody!
Cody you are my newest favorite channel indulgence brother. You have a pull no shots attitude and me and my think your extremely fun and informative. Please continue putting out a fantastic channel we love the Content!!!! Stay safe bro and god bless
Thanks for the entertaining content once again! You’re an awesome guy man!
I think village is underrated
Stop wearing awesome T-Shirts! I was totally distracted by that badass "Back to the Future" design XD
I think I would say "Signs" is my favorite. Big case of nostalgia cause it was also the first movie I saw 3 times in the theaters. I had such a blast with it and remember recommending it to all my friends at school.
It’s crazy how identical our thoughts are on Old. Literally what you said in your review and in this ranking are my exact thoughts.
22:43 "to the NATURE in which you see alot of these death scenes"
Ah! I see what you did there Cody 🤣
Think he was just the producer and story creator on it, but the horror movie "Devil" was terrifying and intense
I loved devil
You are my favorite youtuber Cody
I love your videos
Ps. Video idea: Top 10 favorite movie opening scenes
As I get older, I more and more realize that Signs is my favorite movie of all time. The simplicity and scar factors just knock it out of the park.
Yeah man that scene in Signs when Phoenix plays the footage of the Alien popping out during the kids birthday party scared me as well and the fact that he plays the footage again makes it even scarier. I didn't sleep for almost a week.
Love the videos Cody ❤️
Love the content Cody!
Great ranking Cody.
I still have not seen The Happening, After Earth, Wide Awake or Old Yet lol
Funny you posted this today, my coworkers and I were just talking about Signs and M. Night this morning. I wish I could enjoy his movies, but IMO his only good flicks are The Sixth Sense, the Unbreakable trilogy, and The Visit. I have the exact same feelings about The Happening, it has the same type of appeal as The Room. So bad that it’s great.
Yesss! That damn birthday party scene in Signs, scared the living shit out of me…😂
The ending monolog from Samuel Jackson as Mr. Glass @ the end is INCREDIBLE.
Totally with you on your no. 1 choice. The pacing of the movie is perfect and it's impossible to get bored watching it.
Great ranking. When you see Last Night at Soho, can you do a Edgar Wright ranking list next? I think he is an awesome director. I would like to hear your raking of his films.
Good list, Cody. Especially like your defense of the Happening. I would've swapped your 1 and 2, but just personal preference.
“No thank you I’ll take xenomorphs” 😂 Totally agree
“I was on the swimming team” one way to confirm your death in a film😂
My favorite is Signs. I love that movie so much and Joaquin Phoenix seems normal in it. It also has a young Abigail Breslin.
Love the review
Signs, the sixth sense, and unbreakable are his best. Agree. Also, water would be the same on any planet. H2O. Great vid.
I agree Unbreakable is phenomenal it's also my favorite M Night movie, ive always said it's weird that Unbreakable came out before the huge comic book superhero movie boom when this feels like a movie that would come out after the huge comic book movie craze of today but I guess M Night truly was ahead of his time with this movie
You are so right about The Happening be an unintentional comedy. I still laugh thinking about the scene of the man purposely walking up to the lions.
Great reviews.
Makes me wish M. night would just do straight up horror. He'd be soooooo good at it. Even the creepy scenes in the village have great tension.
M night doesn't do horror, he never has.
@@alucard2010 yeah I know but i wish he would because i think he'd be decent
He has the movie "The Visit" is categorized as "Horror" and nothing else. 😅
hell yeah, new vid!
Back to the Future is my favorite movie of all-time. Love love love your shirt in this video Cody!
I remember watching signs when I was a kid and being scared shitless! Always looking out for aliens on rooftops after that
Hey Cody, can you please do a studio/setup tour?
I’m hella surprised you had the happening where it’s at on your channel bro haha. I love this movie for stupid reasons of my own but I hear so much everyone hates it. I thought you were going to have it like after the last avatar. Nice placement, yes movie is ridiculous but I can simply put it on and some how will enjoy it.
I finally agree with one of your list. You almost lost me in your nauseous love for Chucky Movies ahead of Halloween but I’m still with you
Great list brother. Your content is so good. I finally started my channel about a month ago and you were one of my main motivations!!!
Also, I remember the other movie you've seen in theatre three times... 😂🤣😂
"Fuck you!"
"Ohh, Sounds fun."
What a great list, it’s exactly like mine if you swap Old with After Earth
By the way congratulations on 58K
I absolutely LOVED Signs. Moving; suspenseful, and at the time I watched it, it had a particularly profound message I needed to hear. People sometimes rag on this movie, but I just don't get the criticism. So the aliens were deathly allergic to water. And? That somehow undermines the plot? It doesn't, but that's the same shallow criticism that people who gang up on this movie always use. The answer to navigating within a planet that is 3/5 water is to JUST NOT GET WET. It's not that hard. The only time I get wet is when I take my daily shower or go swimming. Otherwise? I can't think of the last time I got wet unintentionally or by circumstance. So the answer for the aliens is just don't shower or visit the pool. Problem solved.
Excellent movie. Loved it and definitely one of Shyamalan's best.
Reminds me of Jaws when Brody says He doesn’t like water and it’s only an island if you look at it from the water.
Fuckin love your argument about the water shit in signs....love that flick! I got it at 3....6th sense 2 and unbreakable 1.....great vid my man....
Lady in the Water is one of my favorite films and I rewatch it every couple of years.
Good general review! I did have 2 comments:
- just like you suggested with the happening (I had same experience as you), view ‘Lady in the Water’ with a different lens. He wrote that movie as a fairy tale for his kids (lens). As for him being the writer, it was commenting on people putting his writing on an unachievable pedestal, and the critic being eaten was def what you commented on, but also people’s expectations (the mumbling) of his works being wrong (and eaten).
- Old was a (maybe credited/potentially stolen) version of the comic/graphic novel Sandcastles. Highly recommend you read it, he really just rewrites the 3rd act.
Keep them reviews coming!
I love Lady In The Water
DUDE! Thanks you! I’ve been saying the same thing about the aliens being allergic to water for years! When I first saw the movie, that’s the first thing I thought of. It’s really not that confusing. I feel that people really don’t like to think when they watch movies.
the arguments are always about them being smart enough to know there was water.. We don't know how smart they were, maybe they were idiots for all we know
@@connornoiles2447 lol yeah! it’s either that or they didn’t know water existed or something. There are tons of things out there that we are allergic to that we’ve either never had or don’t know of
Cody, I Enjoy the way you intelligently review movies, & your sense of Humor, even on films you Dislike that I may not.😊 Re M. Night Shyamalan, I've Never seen After Earth, The lady in the Water, Death Sentence or his 1 family film (it's name I forgot), so per what I've Seen at least once, I agree w/much of your ranking except: I'd put The Visit Higher up as I really liked it, found it quite Creepy & I was surprised by the twist; & I'd put The Village above The Happening, tho I didn't hate The Happening when I 1st saw it, but didn't find it funny as you do. My Definite #1 is SIGNS as I Love that movie, Joaquin & both kids, & It's Twist that helped Mel Gibson's former Reverend character get his Faith back; & #2 is The Sixth Sense. Re Unbreakable, I saw it just once So long ago that I need to rewatch it, as I've seen both Split & Glass twice, so I think I'll find Unbreakable to be a Good film, but Don't recall it enuf now to rank it. Also now I'll definitely watch Death Sentence, & tho you did Not like Lady in the Water, I'm interested in seeing it.
(7 hours later) 32 minutes in on a rewatch, I’m like... “Oh... Cody is wearing a BACK TO THE FUTURE shirt!” (yeah, late) 😄
Unbreakable was a very unique take on the superhero genre loved it from start to finish
Believe it or not , the twist of the visit got me as a parent.
When you mentioned not being a big fan of Found Footage horror, have you seen Hell House or Lake Mungo?
Duuuuude lake mungo was so disturbing . I was up for a while after watching it at night. Really creepy
@@kayyodii Absolutely agreed extremely realistic highly suggest Hell House first movie to scare me in a decade
Before I watched the Sixth Sense I was told that there was a twist at the end. I immediately started looking for hints, and I ended up guessed it the first time he interacted with the kid, when the mom said didn’t say a word to him. However it didn’t ruin it for me, I still enjoyed it. I’ve watched it multiple times now
I feel like war of the world’s execution with the plants killing the aliens really hurt signs because signs they really go into it so the ending makes complete sense but war of the worlds feels like it’s just thrown in because they ran out of ideas. I feel people have seen that and say “yeah now signs ending is kinda dumb because they die by water.”
Hey great video Cody. My favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie is "The Happening". I know that it's bad but that's what I love about it. I enjoyed these good actors act like the dumbest people imagable. The Mrs. Jones scene cracks me up every time. I enjoy it on a regular basis. I also love "Split" "Unbreakable" and "The Visit".
I've never understood people that said that they like a movie because it's so bad. Whaaaat? How can you like something that is bad. It's kind of like a person likes eating rice cakes because they taste so bad. Just like you can't like to eat something that tastes bad....how can you like a movie that is bad? I just don't get it!
@@mariolopez3728 It's what makes us all unique.
@@mickandme1 Maybe....but it still doesn't make any sense whatsoever!
That is how I feel about the Lady in the Water absolutely noone that I know personally likes the movie but me and I watch it over and over again. I also like The Happening. I think it's the cheese factor, lol
Split shows that a reveal can sometimes or most of the time be better than a crazy twist… and yes, Signs above Six Sense!!! I argue my household till this day 😂
Sixth Sense doesn't pack near the punch once you've seen it.
Definitely agree on the top 6 and the order in which you put them in. Everything after the 6, I'll never watch again. The Village I remember leaving the theatre so pissed off, I remember screaming, "that's it??!!"
The Village never gets enough love. But I also liked Glass, glad I’m not on an island
haha "hey, what's your name and occupation?" Wow.. I gotta check that film out.
Good stuff
Never realized he had that many movies! Never heard of "The Last Airbender". Never saw "The Lady In The Water", but want to. Never heard of "Wide Awake". Heard of "Old", but only by seeing it mentioned online. Haven't seen ads for it on tv(or even online), so all I have is a title. Have no idea what it's about, so have no idea on whether or not I wish to see it.(Btw, when you mention the title, I pause and type the comment, so this comment precedes hearing your explanation and thoughts on the film.) "After Earth", never heard of. Never heard of "The Visit", but now desire to see it. "The Village" is actually my favorite of his, lol! Never heard of "The Happening". Never saw "Glass", but read about the trilogy a while back, and want to see the entire thing. "Split", covered with "Glass" comment. "The Sixth Sense", great film! Saw it with my sister, who'd seen it before. I almost got the twist, but had it backwards. "Signs", great film! "Unbreakable", covered earlier.
I’ve been waiting
Where would Knock at the Cabin be now that it's out?
I personally love The Village the most out of all M Night’s films. Looking forward to the new Dexter review currently doing a marathon in prep of the new season
Seeing the last Airbender at the bottom makes me happy
'A toothpick to a gunfight' - nice.
A little surprised by your putting Signs above The Sixth Sense, though in retrospect I shouldn't have been. Did expect Unbreakable to top the list & Airbender to come in at the bottom, however.
Often a bad big-screen adaptation of a series (either TV or novel) will damage the reputation of what came before, but at least Airbender does seem to have avoided that, making people aware of the series and want to check it out rather than turning them off it. That was certainly the case with me.
Two items related to The Sixth Sense: regarding Haley Joel Osment, don't forget AI which came out just two years later. One of Spielberg's best - and most underrated - movies, and Osment is superb in it. Regarding Toni Collette, she did get nominated (but didn't win); agree that she's been overlooked in other years, though.
I haven't seen Old, but based on your review, perhaps a limited series would be good. Each episode could focus on some of the people and the concepts could be explored with more artistry.
Great list. Really.
Great List cody and Thanks for letting me know that Old wasn't good
18:52 I was describing this movie to my ex and her heart sank when I told her the twist 😂😂😂
Where would you put Knock at the Cabin?
My favorite is Signs great movie and great list
M. Knight is a very polarizing artist. For me he is one of my favorites.
Have not seen all MNS films but if I had to choose out of the few I have seen the Sixth Sense would be my favorite with Bruce Willis starring in a role that's very different from his badass tough guy roles. Signs,Happening,Split,Unbreakable,Glass, and the Visit I've seen as well and also still enjoyed and never got bored watching.
The lady in the water was a fairy tale he was told as a child
1. The Sixth Sense
(One of my all time favorite horror movies and just movie in general)
2. Unbreakable
(The start of the "realistic" superhero and great twist)
3. Signs
(Orignal A Quiet Place and extremely hated just for the Alien weakness when the rest of the movie is great)
4. Split
(One of the best performances in any M.Night movie, great atmosphere)
5. The Village
(Great cinematography and acting)
6. The Visit
(Nice little horror movie, the crawl space scene was done extremely well)
7. Glass
(I get the hate but also get what M.Night was going for)
8. The Happening
(One of those bad movies that are still enjoyable)
9. Old
(Yea it's bad but still like the concept of it and some nice camera work)
10. After Earth
(Just because of Will Smith)
11. Lady In The Water
(Saw it years ago but remember absolutely nothing about it)
Haven't seen Wide Awake , The Last Airbender.
He was firing on all cylinders with his first 3 films. Everyone was saying he was the next Spielberg and compared him to Hitchcock. Then The Village came out and it all started changing. He took his script for Lady in the Water to his usual producing partners and they told him they weren't interested. That is the moment when his career started the major decline. His ego was bruised terribly.
Critics tore him apart for The Village, so it's no coincidence that Lady in the Water was a giant F U to critics (not to mention, a masterpiece).
The problem with people saying The Village is where he “started with the twist and wrote everything afterwards” does not work as an excuse to dislike the movie; And here is why:
This exact plot had already been done before in a teen-young adult novel titled “Running out of Time” by the author Margaret Peterson Haddix. This book was written in 1995 and features a storyline of a girl trying to escape the confines of her village of Clifton in the “1800’s” to get medicine for an illness known as diphtheria that’s killing everyone. The girl escapes and finds out it is actually 1996. This plot has been done before and even though issues of plagiarism were never warranted against Night when The Village was released, this wasn’t anything new. I guess I would just like to know from the people who thought he started with the twist first……how else was he suppose to write the rest of the story before it’s twist to make it make sense? This movie, IMO, is his best film he has ever made and people seem to be totally out of touch with its deeper meaning.
Even though you aren't a big cartoon guy, I promise the Avatar show itself is great. It has the childlike wonder and humorous moments for kids to enjoy, but it has mature storytelling and world-building for adults. And it gets pretty damn dark too. Highly recommend it, I swear it's better than the shitty movie. Plus it gets better with every season.
The Last Airbender movie for years has been my number 1 worst movie of all time. I grew up with Avatar The Last Airbender. I hate this movie so much. It's an atrocity to cinema and to the show. Yes i think The Last Airbender movie is worse than Cats, Battlefield Earth, Gigli and Jack & Jill.
Oh yes, this is gonna be great
The hot dog guy was the best character in the happening no doubt, always cracked me up everytime he showed up 😅
Favs - Signs, Sixth Sense, Glass, The Village
1. Signs
2. Unbreakable
3. Glass
4. Sixth sense
5. Split
Glad you put Glass in your top 5 & glad you have signs very high
Unbreakable really doesn't get the love and respect it deserves
The Happening and Old are the same to me lol make those a twilight episode 😂😂😂 Signs is 🐐
I agree that the water thing in signs isn’t a plot hole. There is plenty of stuff in space that can kill humans, yet we keep going there. We went to the moon, even though the lack of air there is fatal to us. We want and probably will go to Mars, despite the fact that the soil there is poisonous to us.
I’m not Surprised Sony Avoided having M. Nights Name In The Trailor Because Of The Last Airbender, The Happening, Lady In The Water, And The Village
35:01 I saw the twist coming from a million miles away.
Congrats, you're the only person in the world
