    I came across my previous comment that I posted here 3 years ago, and I was not aware that it had replies and questions ...so sorry about that. First I need to say that this tutorial video is just awesome. I could not imagine how this complicated job would of been like without it. So BIG THANKS to volvosweden for this video. Like all his videos, they are superbly done. Top notch quality, with just the right details. In addition, there are encouraging statements on his part. I think this volvosweden guy is a seriously GOOD guy, to say the very least.
    Ok I got many asking me how I did the job without the removal tool. What I realize later is that the screw holding the fan that the author's car in the video was missing; well in my car it was not missing, and it was the only thing stopping the fan from turning the 45 or so degree to be removed. I mean my car did not have the tab that needs to be pressed to turn the fan in the removal position. So for me removing the fan was fairly easy. I just had to remove the screw, then turn the fan 45 or so degree from the driver side (not from the side where the squirrel-cage and where the tool is inserted which is the passenger side) and finally I pushed it towards the passenger side. No helper needed.
    I think a previous mechanic cut off or broke off the tab in my car, in purpose. With that screw in place this lock-tab is certainly unnecessary, I think it is just a design for fast assembly during manufacturing. When I installed the new fan, the tips of my fingers fitted through the spaces between the spoke-like plastic ribs of the squirrel-cage, and so I was able to control the position of the fan as i was inserting it. It is very easy to turn the fan in position from the driver side. And then I reinserted the screw. Voila!
    As a note: for those who have the tab on the driver-side holding the fan. If someone can rig a way to keep the tab depress, then one can do like I did, remove the fan by turning it from the driver side; hence without the removal tool.
    I think volvosweden does the job according to Volvo's manual, and that is great for doing such a video. However, removing the entire carpet, thereby the seat and amp is overkill. The carpet is not really in the way of removing the CEM and and everything else. And its is much nicer to work with the carpet on when leaning down on the floor of the car.
    Taking my meticulous time the job took me 5 to 6 hours. What I found the most difficult was to deal with the hidden two screws on the recirculate/fresh air controller unit. Like volvosweden says "patience, patience, patience..." and I would add "perseverance!"

    Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I think it was well done, and quite helpful. I have a 2012 XC60, and it's a bit different design behind the gauge cluster, with a bunch of extra plastic to cradle the cluster and a different air duct configuration. Not as easy as this one, so I'm going to do some trimming of that plastic to get some better access. According to CARFAX, this was already replaced once at Volvo of Toronto, but I think the fan was shaken loose when going down a bumpy gravel road. Maybe that's what that screw is for.

    • @juhal5959
      @juhal5959 5 лет назад

      On 2012 XC60 the repair was easier than on the video. No need to open or remove anything on driver's side as there is no screw or button that holds the blower. You only need the special tool, and you can remove the blower from right side of the car. When the blower is loose, pull it out only a little, and you can detach the electric connector. Thus you can do the repair alone, you do not need assistant to press the button. I checked the exact model of blower from www.behrhellaservice.com/behr-hella-service/en/Online-catalog-5076.html, I did not use the Land Rover blower, though indeed it is cheaper than the recommended model. And, I was a bit lazy and did not remove the seat, I only lowered the backrest as much as possible and I was lying on the seat, not on the floor.

      @@juhal5959 Do you think it's the same for XC70 (2014)?

    • @juhal5959
      @juhal5959 5 лет назад +1

      @@delendam Difficult to say. You will see it if you remove the speedometer panel. If there is a massive steel frame and the whole air channel behind is one piece, and you do not see at all the detachable piece of air channel etc. as on the video, it is same as mine. Btw. be careful when ordering the blower, I accidentally ordered right-hand-drive car blower first.

    • @juhal5959
      @juhal5959 5 лет назад

      I also advice to remove totally the white ECC unit holder steel frame, not to bind it with the nylon strip as on the video. That way you get good space to pull out the recirculation flap piece and the blower. Otherwise you may damage something as it is rather tight spot. Note also that if you lose one of the 3 screws from recirculation piece, you can remove one from the old blower case.

    My man! Just did this project today...4 hours. Half spent running around trying to find the tool I put down that I just had in my hand. But these details were spot on!! I too did not have a bolt in the blower fan as you discovered. I followed your instructions to a TEE including the seat and carpet removal. My ONE recommendation is don't cheap out on the blower tool. My Amazon special for $35 kept Bending and I was so close from it breaking in the fan which would have put me in HELL. Luckily I didn't, but I did throw away the damn tool after completion. And also, don't kill yourself looking for the "blocks" that the tool fits in. The covers over the fan blocks this.

    These cabin blowers are problematic since 2001 on all P2 models. Bmw and perhaps other brands had the same blower with the same problem - a tiny bushing bearing piece worth 50c under the fan gets wet from humidity and starts rusting and squealing in cold weather. Same problem for past 15 years and they couldn't bother to improve the design of the small bearing. Plus you guys on the P3 models got the blower buried inside the dash and to add insult now it needs a removal tool. Volvo must fire that engineer.

  • @jamesbeam6979

    Great Video thanks - I've obtained the part and the tool and I'll be using this to carry out the same repair on my 2007 P3 Volvo to fix the squeaky winter fan - I'll be working symmetrically opposite as mine is RHD, but I've been told the HVAC unit is a mirror of yours. I'll report how I got on.
    Just for info, I've seen a few references to a screw to hold the blower motor in place that appeared to be missing in the video. From the research I did it appears that the screw hole is a service fix in case the tab that locks the fan into place gets broken - it means you can refit the fan with a broken plastic tab and don't need to buy a new one - you just use a screw in the holes as shown to lock the fan in place. You should not see a screw if the fan has never been removed or if the tab wasn't broken.

    I had an idea with an issue on a 2010 XC60 which had the same fan squeaking issue you had. I took the windshield wiper blade arms off and the cowling below, and accessed the fresh air inlet. (it's just some clips that hold the cowling down) Then you can see the blower fan from there through the inlet opening. (must not be in recirculate mode or the door will be closed, select fresh air setting in the car)
    I only knew that you can see the blower fan from there because years ago when replacing the windshield I watched the technicians while they installed the new windshield. (they were nice and let me into the shop)
    I purchased a 3 foot long spray nozzle extension like the little 5 inch red ones you'll find, but very flexible and much longer. With the fan off, I blasted some MAF cleaner behind the squirrel cage fan portion and let it dry. I repeated that one more time. Let it dry completely again.
    Then started the car and the blower fan, It did not squeak anymore on any speed settings! I'm so happy! As a little extra insurance I switched the long spray nozzle tube over to a aerosol spray can of "Seafoam Deep Creep Penetrating Lubricant" and carefully, and sparingly, shot some onto the motor shaft behind the fan cage. Then started the car and ran the fan through all the speeds up and down. Still no squeaking!
    My hope is it lasts a long time. I'll report back when and "knock on wood" if it starts squeaking again. I hope it's not anytime soon! The whole job took 45 minutes working at a comfortable relaxed pace. It will be quicker next time, since I've done it once already and it was pretty easy to do anyway. (but I hope there's no next time, at least for several years!)

    Excellent video, as always. Thank goodness I don't have a blower fan issue on my 2009 XC70 T6 but I'll tell you that I just finished changing my fuel pump out and THAT was a lot of work. I had to drop the rear subframe, exhaust and disconnect the propshaft just to drop the gas tank and gain access to the top where the fuel pump goes into the tank. In hindsight, I should've taken video but I used a lot of expletives during the repair. I hope and pray you won't have to replace your pump anytime soon.

    • @volvosweden
      @volvosweden  6 лет назад

      Hey. Is that possible to cut out an opening under the seat? Just an idea

    • @siulagrande1984
      @siulagrande1984 6 лет назад +1

      volvosweden possibly but I didn't want to cut into the bodywork. The fuel pump must be accessed from the top of of the gas tank and I needed enough room to manipulate the hoses that connect up to the pump after half of it is inside the tank. That was the biggest issue I had. I couldn't connect up all the hoses and electrical connections while the pump was outside the tank then installing it. The gas tank hole opening isn't large enough.
      I used to own a lot of Audis before switching to Volvo and replacing the fuel pumps and filters on all the Audis were easy because they always provided an easy access panel. I could finish a fuel pump replacement on my Audi A6 Quattro in 15 min.
      Changing the pump on my Volvo XC70 took me 14-16 hours.

    It was my first ever car repair and i couldn’t have done it without this video. Took me 8ish hours, given I’m a novice in car repairs, but I was still able to get thru the whole procedure.
    One note is I didn’t take out the seat (or even fold back the carpet) and didn’t have an issue. (I’m 6 feet tall; 180 pounds but quite flexible). Also if you’re just one person (like I was) you can wedge a clothes pin to push down the plastic release tab that holds the motor in place. This step is the only step that requires two people, so you’re able to do the repair yourself using that tip.
    Thank you so much to the team that put this together. Your positive encouragement was what inspired me to give this repair a try in the first place. Saved me $2k+

    Ok, so it’s winter here. My blower fan has been squeaking since 2019. It finally died last week, right during a cold snap (0-5F). I bought the part from the dealer (way too much, but I needed it right now or so I thought), watched this video again and realized I needed that special tool. Ordered that damn thing on Monday, it came yesterday. Watched this video again. I worked last night (1500-0325) took a nap and went to it at 1100. I had the car apart at 1145, new part installed at 1155 with help from the wife, everything buttoned up at 1315. Thanks for this man, seriously. Even though I payed way too much for the motor itself, I saved prolly $1500 in labor. I couldn’t have done this without your help in this video. A sincere thanks, and a raise of the beer your way!!

      Welcome to P3 Volvo’s. P3 generation of Volvo’s are very weird mix cuz it clear that Volvo was in middle of engineering and building stuff and ford walked in and screwed stuff up. Lot of clever and easy to maintain very Swedish engineering all over these cars however every so often there’s these things that just make no sense, like I’m sure if Volvo had 100% control they would put it behind an easy to use cover somewhere, may still required a special tool but would been easy and only have 2 steps .
      Also some clearly half and half engineering as well on some stuff. the radiator cooling fans, I was attempting to replace my cooling fans on my rad the other night and the top half is just clipped in with heavy duty clips like whatever that’s easy and thinking maybe it’s on a sled system that locks in that seems like a Swedish design thing, nope...bottom half is bolted in from the back side and have to either reach from under and around which seems like would be fine but I spent a half hour dicking with it and couldn’t figure it out and feels half and half like Volvo designed top half and ford designed bottom half.
      Speaking of the radiator cooling, I asked a few people if I can just replace the fans only since I can get same fans for fairly cheap $80 new vs $450 for entire fan system, answer I got was “it looks like it’s possible but I don’t think it comes apart I think they built the fan into it..”. Wtf

    Just replaced mine on a 2013 S60! only took about 4 hours with cleanup. Our pipe behind the gauge cluster is all one piece and doesn't come out easily at all. You can just use a long pry bar to lift up that clip instead. Once the blower motor is pulled out towards the passenger side, you can disconnect the plug from the back of it since there is enough slack in it. Also, that screw hole that isn't used isn't used on any Volvos as far as I'm aware. It seems to be a spot for a captured nut, possibly used on a land rover or something. There doesn't appear to be any threads in the hole on mine. Also, if you have motorized folding mirrors and auto up and down windows, you may have to reteach them by pulling the fuse or just turning your car on and off a couple of times which somehow worked for me. Finally, that foam gasket in the back of the blower motor hole is SUPER important. Mine broke and I installed it anyways and now I have a whistling noise where air is escaping from where the gasket should be. Oops. But seriously amazing write-up!

    I did the job WITHOUT the "Removal Tool" easily and without any problem what so ever. Also there is NO need to remove the carpet (Hence leave the amplifier, seat and door sill trim untouched). On the other hand I removed the bracket holding the CEM unit, it was very easy and provided more room to work and place working lights.
    Thank you for this video and many others from VOLVOSWEDEN. They make a huge difference in working on my 2008-XC70. Continue to Spread the LOVE the way you do - You Rocks!

      I have now done the job!
      I really couldn't remove the blower without the tool, so I custom made something similar to the original tool and was able to turn it then. Also - you really have to make sure that you release the tab all the way!
      Couple of remarks about the process - I also didn't see the need to remove the carpet or the passenger seat. I did unbolt the CEM unit, but left the wires attached to it and worked around it, like he did in the video.

    Thanks a lot for the great video! It helped me a lot! I managed to reduce noise without taking the fan off, by drilling a hole to the back of the fan (7 mm) and then with a long pipe (90cm) attached to a WD40 spray pipe I could spray some oil to the back bearings of the fan! I needed not take anything off from the right side of the car, I only took off the speedometer and the house behind that. There is still little noise left, but next I'll try to spray WD40 to the other bearing of the fan. I'll report that later!

    • @arisavuoja
      @arisavuoja 5 лет назад

      A little noise came back during last couple of weeks i.e. about 9 months after my quick repair. The noise emerges mow only when the fan is running slowly - when the fan is running on high rpm there is no extra noise. I’ll try to re-operate the oil spray to the bearings…

    • @arisavuoja
      @arisavuoja 4 года назад

      @@kairoilves9932 You can go to the video to the time 15:07-15:21 where you can see the back cover of the fan (volvosweden has taken it off and puts on again). Then go to the time 15:44-15:56 where you can see the same back cover through the hole of speedometer and there you can see a very little white dot on the back cover about 3 cm above of the screw of the back cover. I drilled the hole at the white dot! The plastic cover is quite thin, so be careful not to drill too deep: only max 3 mm. Angle was strait i.e. about 90' to the surface! Good luck!

    I have this problem on my XC60, and I think I'm going to give it a try. I've watched your video and I'm feeling like I can possibly do this. Given the difficult location, my question is, would it be any easier if you remove the center panel, with the screen and vents? I've had that off before when attempting to replace the screen with an Android. But I guess the set up is different - yours is a P3 and the XC60 has a larger screen....

    you can also cut all the supporting arms off that go to the center of the shaft which hold the surrounding squirrel cage fins and then use a Dodge 2 9/16" hub socket to remove the blower motor, it fits perfectly snug onto the motor's castings and then use a conventional half inch drive extension and ratchet to twist it out. You can buy it a Performance Tool or Summit Racing for $14.99
    I was able to use my left hand to twist the new blower motor in by reaching into and behind the instrument panel because the torque that was needed was in my favor as opposed to when attempting to remove it.

    Thanks for sharing this information, just done our rhd p3, so much was mirror image.
    I made a little platform to sill height, but still worked upside down. Most of the work was through passenger side, even the wire for the motor was done by retrieving the motor a little way then putting my hand over to unclip it. I had to put my hand up next to steering column then over a duct to feel the back of the motor clip while someone turned it. I wish I had removed the plug from the air quality sensor instead of taking out the whole thing as I broke the retaining clip. Struggled refitting the motor, wish I had reused the motor housing as the replacement was not a genuine part.
    Thanks again for your help
