Interestingly, when the frunk trim is removed, we found that the hood actually sits sub-flush to the lip on the fascia. It appears that the hood fitment is set to account for an interference fit with the frunk bin/trim. Not a typical execution. Thank you for watching!

First off - Sandy is awesome. As for many parts, including the aero shield, they were already changed for the more recent Model 3's. Tesla is constantly improving their cars. The 2017 Model 3 parts Sandy has are not a current representation in many cases. Love these video!!
As a repair person, I always hated following someone who tried to compensate for a problem, as opposed to finding and fixing the issue.

Mark - Tesla constantly makes Improvements on the line, so a car made in 2020 is improved than a car made in 2018, and Tesla does NOT have model years.

The down to earth, non-scripted delivery of a seasoned professional is a welcome change from the average overdone youtube video.
The hood on mine is out of alignment as well and also looks like it was adjusted after the fact. Having a mobile service tech come out this Monday and hopefully he can get the hood aligned so it's not paint on paint against the bumper.

@@MunroLive Just checked mine VIN XX0413. No sign of any adjustment on the trunk lid hinges. Closes fine, but does sit slightly below the front nose piece.
@@rogerheuckeroth7456 It's adjusted incorrectly, as well. So far we are 3-3 for Tesla hoods not fitting correctly. I would assume almost none of them fit correctly. Tesla quality is still in need of some attention.

Here's some tough love, Sandy. It's time to quit. You've had more than your share of nicotine fun. My father held his brothers' hands as they drowned in the own body fluids. After the first brother's death he never smoked again. He started at age 12 and smoked for 60 years or so. In a few years his lungs cleared up and his smoker's cough went away.

We have (small) dents on either side of the T on our hood. It is very difficult to close. I said something to Tesla and they said it was within spec. Family is afraid to use it :(. Thank you for posting about this. I thought it was us. Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them, and looking forward to more. Other than the frunk issue we love our Model Y.

On the Model X the 2 pads on the far right and left sides of the hood can be adjusted in an out to align the front part of the hood. This might also be adjustable on the Model Y. As always thank you for your insights.
It’s interesting how your fingers fit in a hood gap in this video, but in your original video with the Bloomberg journalist (before you took the car apart) the hood fit perfectly fine. Interesting.
It definitely doesn't seem to be Teslas fault. I don't think they bought it directly from Tesla anyways, based on another comment I saw.

Isn't it touching because that cover piece is (visibly) not secured all the way down? And isn't that the case because of the broken snap? I mean, it seems obvious just from looking at it, but I'm not there :)
I'm sad to see the 12V in there :( I was hoping they'd be able to get rid of that by now.

Um, the vampire drain will eventually kill the main battery after a period of non-use and the 12V is there as a backup so the electronics will allow you to recharge after having it towed.

The hood had been adjusted on our car for some reason after painting as well... I had them repaint the exposed area
Watching on a laptop rather than my phone, I can see at 4:40 that the latch has been moved down a staggering 3.5 mm during the tinkering. The original latch position has been recorded by a white marker around the lower half of the fixing bolts' flanges which shows on both the washer and the bracket. This means latching is just beyond the compression "give" in the neoprene frunk collar and/or loose cover. Bring the latch up 1mm maybe and all good.

You can also see plastic quarter molding and straps from Home Depot (look for green tape) that supports some sort of radiator. 6:08
During lockdown, most people get to make jigsaws, or maybe if they are lucky build some legos. Sandy, he gets to take apart a model Y ! I hope that cough gets better.
Stiffener between shock towers was also applied in the older Volvo XC 70, maybe others as well

Still enjoying your Model Y tear down videos, Sandy. Great work. Can't wait to see you dig into the new heat pump and Octovalve thingie. Have you noticed any big changes to the wiring harness? That was one of the things Elon said he wanted to change on the Model Y. He wanted to make it much shorter. Do you see any flex circuit in there?
He was praising the plastic wire wrap. I would bet they better protected the wiring because when you reduce wiring, each wire is responsible for more things so each wire is that much more critical.
A lot of folks have inquired about the wiring, and we will absolutely be digging into that. Likely it is going to take some time though, as we'll need to actually open up/unwrap harnesses to get a true understanding of overall length of wire utilized. We'll be keeping our eyes peeled for flex circuits as well! Stay tuned, Lars!

Chris Hopkins Why do you think a third party would dismantle the hood on a brand new wehicle before selling it? Makes no sense to me. Some people can just not accept any critisism of Tesla.
My guess is they try to adjust the frunk panel, so it can have better looking gaps, but after the adjustment, the frunk cover couldn’t close properly, by forcefully smashing it into place, the plastic latches broke off, is what most likely had happened.

I love the voice command "Pop the hood" feature.
It's refreshing to have impartial analyses of a Tesla. I'm looking at getting a Model Y so hopefully any issues found will be sorted by the time I get one (in Australia and everything gets here years after the rest of the world it seems).
There are problems that have been created during the tinkering. The hood latch is lower than it was out of the factory. There is a mark that should line up with the latch that is no longer lining up. This guy (maybe unintentionally, I don't know, I'm not going to place blame on him) is complaining about a quality control issue that was created after the fact
In aligning the hood for proper gaps they they misaligned the seals and latching which interrupts proper closure. QC and assembly issues off the line is the issue. Gap realignment should not have to be done after assembly and paint.
They have far less issues than a traditional manufacturer. Remember, gas companies ship cars to dealers who fix these issues. Tesla has to be much more perfect due to direct shipping to the customer.
@@_PatrickO Not true. 1)Tesla preps vehicles at delivery point prior to customers. 2)Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Kia etc QC their vehicles at the factory before it goes on the truck. Fit and finish can be spotted and corrected prior to dealers. Many use laser light section technology to do robotic gap and flush measurements at the end of assembly line (long before dealer). This is how you do it.

@@_PatrickO Tesla would disagree with you. Tesla Delivery Center does perform a pre-delivery inspection. Its is performed by a Tesla PDI technician. The technician repairs the issue if possible. Then the customer does a delivery inspection prior to driving out of the garage. It's some company advertising? Companies such as Mercedes Benz use this QC robotic system of inspection on the assembly line. Tesla can use this system also. You are a very angry individual.

Sandy said he bought the car from a dealer. Could it be that other auto manufacturers found Sandy's dealer and paid that dealer to mess with the fitment of the front trunk? The clips on the front were broken off before he got it, sort of weird for a brand new vehicle.
Probably not and due more too early production problems be he does see an improvement over the 3.

Yesterday when you made the point about you are integrity I could totally see where you were coming from but today when this Tesla has issues with its hinge location and it looks like they have clearly been moved I can't help but wonder if they were moved by a person at Tesla before it was delivered to the customer or if it was moved because somebody was trying to get you to say bad things about Tesla. I am definitely not questioning your integrity at all but it is in interesting thing to think about it because they're simply no way to know if those things those alterations were made in good faith or not. If you got the car direct from Tesla, then we wouldn't have any question about who may have altered it and why. That's the flip side of the coin. Still enjoying the videos. Keep 'em coming. Can't wait until you get deep into the guts with the wiring, and gen three computer hardware.
Good point, a lot of dealers hate Tesla. I don't know why these guys can't just buy directly from Tesla that way they still pay for it so ethically it's okay. I feel like they just space ordering the cars quickly enough but as much as they're focused on Tesla I'm sure they can task one employee to get in early with a reservation whenever a new car is released. If not that I'd think Elon would move them up the line.

All the dealer cared about was making a quick $20k. They wouldn't have wasted any time sabotaging the car. Dealer received the car and delivered to Munro without touching it. Case closed.

Sandy, could you try something to see if the hood problem can be resolved with a simple solution. Would overlapping the frunk mould rather than under lapping it solve the contact with the hood?

Have an issue with the hood on our Y too. Sits flush at the very front but the alignment is off left and right and when it releases it sounds like it’s in a bind

What I wonder is, how does the production quality of the Y compare to other manufacturers first-gen products? Seems like the theme here is that Tesla has some awesome engineering (they seem to get a lot of kudos for their ingenious solutions), but they struggle some with production consistency. Would love to see if this can be corrected with time.
There hasn't been first gen models for years now with the other automakers (maybe the i3) but Bloomberg did research that Tesla was doing better than the average automaker.
A big thing is that automakers develop their cars to keep on running until warranty, Tesla develop their cars to have minimal warranty, at any year.

Saw a dissection this video-I think you have to follow Tesla’s instructions on how to close the frunk-it’s not like a normal hood where you drop it hard-it’s a soft close and a two-handed press. The adjustments may have been made to the hood at the dealership you bought the car from, potentially not from Tesla (no way of knowing), but most people aren’t having problems with the hood using the proper technique. They still should improve the mechanics so you can close it any way you want-just food for thought. Thanks for the awesome video
I say from experience hood fit changes from how it was from BIW through GA. All cars go through a body fit process after assembly to correct fit issues. The hood and latch was adjusted for a reason. The contact with trim is a symptom not cause.

Lol, the one guy on the line trying to get the hood to close, probably figured "this is fine, no one will notice" ends up putting together the car that got torn down by Sandy Munro.
There's probably more, and it is something other owners should now look at.
At 0:40 of your First Impressions video you said, “I don’t even need my gap gauge, this looks in pretty good shape” and the frunk looks normal. However, at the beginning of your Frunk video the gap looks off before you open the frunk...implying it had been opened between the videos. Based on how you closed the frunk in your Frunk video, my assumption is that you or another member of your team improperly slammed it closed and shifted the bolts for the brackets and latch (someone may have already messed with the cowl too).
This is the dumbest comment ever. Get your short seller fud bullshit out of here. If closing the hood can shift any of those parts, that means it wasn't tightened down. That is clearly not the case here. These "problems" are all trivial as shit because they take someone a few minutes to fix. A slightly better clip seemingly would fix it all for good. Nothing is wrong with the fundamental design.
So there's a special method for closing Tesla frunk's.
If the bolts moved by shutting the frunk, they were clearly loose.
@@Robert-cu9bm lol, there is no special method. The bolts absolutely did not move. You ever touch a car before, if those bolts are lose enough to move, it will be very obvious when opening it. The hood would wiggle as you handled it. You can see no such thing in the video. This is a simple 2 minute adjustment issue that you fix with a socket wrench.

In a general sense it appears that your analysis is saying that the model y is made to last and is built as a future robotaxi. Elon doesn't care for built in obsolescence. @@kevinjoyce5756 A friend of mine got one of the early model 3s and this video is not how it would look straight from the factory. Now I'm not saying he intentionally messed it up and is reporting on that as if it came that way from the factory because if so, he would be setting himself up for a million dollar libel suit, but I'm also saying that something has been changed after the car left the factory. Those marks on the latch are put there after everything has been torqued down as a way to check at a glance if any bolts are coming loose, and also as a guide for the dealer/repair shop if they have to remove it to get to something. Someone quite clearly fudged it up and doesn't want to admit they did so
Yea not sure but it is a early one and Tesla could have mobile service fix it or at worse bring it in. This is definitely not going to be every car and I would not even say 5% of the early ones. Thanks for the look at the Y can't wait for the Heat pump teardown!

I really wish you’d done a long-range driving test before the car was disassembled so we could see how many miles you were actually able to get out of it from 100% to 0%.

I'd say there's a pretty high likelihood of that. The marks on the latch are put on after everything is in place, not before as an alignment guide. Whatever happened to the car after it left the line, someone had to have been tinkering with the latch assembly and couldn't get it back in place when they moved it
@@richardmillhousenixon I've worked a bit with hoods and what looks easy as far as alignment can end up being a real can of worms. You can make one little adjustment and all heck breaks loose.

We have torn down many vehicles and will continue to do so, but please keep in mind that it takes several months to complete a full teardown with the accompanying analysis and report generation. What future vehicles would you like to see?

Glad to see they're making things better. That's a big part of Tesla's ethos: continual improvement/rapid iteration cycle. I am not sure if that is a necessary thing because they're so young and relatively inexperienced and have so much to improve upon (hardware only) or if they can continue this rate of hardware improvement ad infinitum. Either way, glad to see them improving. It sounds like, so far, the MY is starting off much better than the M3, and the M3 is absolutely dominating it's market, by A LOT. Can't wait to see how the MY sells.
They have far more experience than a traditional auto company because they iterate so fast. You have to remember that traditional auto ships to dealers that fixes the cars up before selling. Tesla delivers directly to customers, so they have to reach much higher levels of quality. This build already surpasses the lower standards allowed by traditional auto manufacturers.

I wonder, given the absence of leather and given that the cybertruck had some strange 'eco' material used for its dashboard if that's something the company is working towards and implementing in their other designs. Mr. Munro, since you get your study cars not direct from the carmaker for good reason, could it be, that this model Y had some unqualified modifications from the third party which cause some broke holders, bad alignments and this small issues?
