Seems pretty incredible the structural pack including seats, carpet and center console is only 1,198 lbs when the Rivian battery pack alone (just batteries) is nearly 2x as heavy. Innovation at its finest...thanks guys!
Pre-structural packs weighed about the same. The Model Y is an 82 kWh pack having a curb weight of 4380 lbs. Rivian is a 7K lb behemoth with a 135 kWh pack. Not even remotely comparable.
@@KyleHubb batt tech changed the game
@@KyleHubb Yeah, I didn't get why they mentioned Rivian's battery pack being heavier. Well yeah, it's almost twice the energy capacity. Wow, 10 gallons of gas weighs twice as much as 5 gallons of gas.
@@JEP-Tech you don’t get it, do you? Add the ENTIRE STRUCTURE, seats and all, you just saw in this video.. PLUS more than half the battery capacity.. and it weighs HALF of JUST the batteries of the others. If you can’t conceptualize how much weight savings that is.. just wait.. I’m sure the people here at Munro will spell it out in more detail as this goes along
@@airheart1 heaviest part is still the battery and I’m betting the rivian battery pack case at the bottom has a little protection because of its offroading capabilities.
Alex in Florida: You're the MVP for helping Munro get this car! We Tesla fans appreciate what you did!
This was great to see. The manufacturing and engineering efficiencies and improvements are what excite me most about Tesla as a company. Just awesome.
TESLA innovates at LIGHTSPEED.
@@markplott4820 Yep, but knowing that is different than seeing the specifics. I love seeing specifically how they've evolved :)
@@CrypticFoxGaming - for Spefics see JOE JUSTICE (former Tesla) and Farzad Mesbahi ( former Tesla Agile) .
I agree, tesla is quite good at min/maxing the manufacturing process and related efficiencies. However, when these come at the cost of reliability and/or difficulty to service said parts, we start to see a big disparity in overall quality of the vehicle.
While I do love my Tesla, I for sure will think twice before getting another one.
@@gmds44 Yeah I could see that presenting some concerns, but I suspect long term the changes they're making improve the reliability of the vehicle and the consistency of build quality as well when they get it dialed in (something they've struggled with in the past).
All RUclipsrs come together at Munro Live, what a huge contribution you are all making to today's news value. In the mainstream media, it's almost all negative fud. I thank you all.
1198 pounds ? Including 2 seats ? And it's structural ( so it's going to save weight on the body )?
And , most important , I can't imagine how many hours in manual labour during trim fitting is saving this kind of assembly ...
Truly amazing job by Tesla . Only a "vertical company" , well integrated, can deliver this integration . The opposite is what we have seen in the Ford Mach-E cooling system video ...
I can't wait for the other video ...
Thank you Munro !!!!!
1198 pounds. Why does the car weigh almost the same as the long range with a lighter pack?? Hope we get some insight on the.
It’s definitely a change to the whole decking process, and greatly improves the ergo for seat and floor buildup. I’ll wait to see the details analysis, but the labour savings are not likely significant but rather small efficiency pickups. You wont save “hours” as the whole assy process is only likely 12-15 hours in total labour. Even still, if you can save 20 min, that’s 10-15$ per car and that’s huge.
It’s a lot of labour to get there, but seeing the access under the dash from through the floor was wild.
Where do the rear seats go?
@@richardmorin4518 What is the total weight of this Texas Tesla?
@@patangaha I think you can see the structure where are fixed in the first 6 seconds of the video.
5:10 that sliding center console that engages with the structural battery pack and instrument panel is freaking genius!
I wonder if Center Console can be modded to be sliding for the Passangers, like on KIA EV6.
@@markplott4820 I had the same idea at first, but I don't think so, because you have a connections in the front. But I believe this makes it easier for aftermarket to design an aftermarket center console.

What a phenomenal design. Thanks for sharing and showing all the details.
You should do tesla updates AND iOS updates 🤣
the drop floor is ingenious - the mounting window as big as it gets, without loosing much structural quality. and then... the structural battery pack, mind-blowing!
you can even see the REAR Gigacasting is protruding into the Rear Seats and linking up with them.
The structural rigidity is far greater.
Nothing mind blowing here lol….. simple engineering! Not all cars are made the same
@@carholic-sz3qv Yeah , interesting to look at , but is it any less interesting or cool to watch a conventional front wheel drive vehicle being manufactured with the body lowered down onto the engine , transmission , differential subframe , suspension, brakes and steering in one movement .
And teslas where not the first mass produced car to have a bolt in floor , just saying.
Popcorn is ready!
As a retired mfgr designer of radio controlled model aircraft, the review of cost saving techniques really hits home
Absolutely fascinating. Munro Live, your team is above and beyond the best educational videos on the net. Thank you for sharing such awesome technology with us lesser beings.
Wow, thank you!
Absolutely stunning. This by far is my favorite video at Munro. Love you guys!
Yay! Thank you!
I dunno - comparing the Ford Mach-E's cooling system was pretty high on my list - Sandy's interview with Elon was a favorite. It is cool to see these next gen Tesla's with the giga casting and the 4680 batteries get torn down.
It also looks that with the structural battery pack there could be a viable 3rd party market to replace the battery pack in the future.
The opening when you guys revealed you were sitting on the removed pack was perfect.
The editing generally was excellent.
having the seats mounted to the battery pack is pretty freakin cool. no more robots doing acrobatics to get the seats into the car during assembly.
That saves a ton of assembly line time!
Also eliminates the robot gymnastics to get the instrument panel and rear seats into the car.
What about the rear seats, where are they placed?
They are fixed to the chassis before the pack is fitted. Because there is the gaping hole it’ll be a lot easier than normal cars
@@martylawson1638 it also makes the car less repairable in case of problems years later, from the structural battery alone to the big castings! I’ll like to see those cars survive in Africa or South America lol……
Cory - excellent presentation. Munro is extraordinary!
Guys you are awesome! This is a historical video! Thank you for sharing this insight!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Monroe & Associates!! Amazing progress for Tesla go Tesla!!!
That is a real smart way of doing the interior, instead of going through the doors you can come up underneath to put in the back seats, front dash and trim it out then lastly lift the floor in. Would make much more ergonomic sense in the production line. You even see the workflow that they have first you lift the dash in and hookup all the wires, lights etc from the front to the back. Then you trim out the roof and pillars. Lift in the back seat frame and seats. Finally lift in the floor, slide the center console forward bolt is and cover it and the inadie is done.
We know this
I wonder IF possibly the Center Console can be modded to slide back & forward like the KIA EV6 ?
@@markplott4820 I don't really see a point in that function. That may be good for compact vehicles, but the Model Y isn't a compact vehicle.
@@ProJC - Model Y still smaller than the iD4, the Polestar, Taycan , and eTron(TURD).
@@markplott4820 Model Y has more storage room then the ID4, check out Bjorn Nyland's banana box tests :-) Model Y can tow 1600Kg, ID 4 only 1200.. Really the Model Y is a much more capable SUV than the ID4.. and I think the Model Y looks better, but that is subjective.
My impression is the Polestar 2 is smaller than the Model Y
ETron is much bigger, but also much heavier, with all the nonsense they have added, it has a bigger battery pack, but smaller range (BAD efficiency!) it also cannot tow as much as the Model Y (because it is so heavy!)... You pay an awfull lot for useless 'luxury' and is more expensive to operate.
Shoutouts to Alex for giving up his *brand new car* so Munro could tear it down for all of us. That's sacrifice right there!
Unless he ordered 2?🤔
I think they swapped.
Munro bought a tesla and Alex bought a tesla, bis Alex' car was arriving sooner so they took his car and he took their car
He says he paid full price to him in the video
Great work as always and it’s so cool to see the whole analysis process broken down by all of you at Munro! I grew up watching so many informational shows on Discovery Channel, TLC, and History Channel. Your content is like a hyper specific version of something they’d have. So awesome and informative!
I assumed the structural pack would be welded to the rest of the body. The fact it’s bolted and relatively easy to remove and replace if necessary is amazing. With two mega castings at either end Tesla is doing an unbelievable job of innovating
Yes, the thought going into low labor cost for pack removal and battery replacement, reuse, or recycling is impressive.
Good luck with water leaks.
@@epoxy1710 You even watch the video? There is a thick seal between the pack the the body. There should be no leaks at all with that seal.
@@pipooh1Give that seal 10 years.
@@epoxy1710 So 10 years for the seal to fail, 1-2hours of work to remove the pack, put a new seal and bolt it back in for the next 10 years. I do not see a problem to have this done as a 10 year maintenance thing for a car. Surely since you have no other maintenance you have to do on EV.
1200 lbs weight for the pack with seats and all attached is pretty impressive. Compare that to the 2012 Model S “85 kWh” pack, which weighed 1200 lbs by itself. Total energy was about 82 kWh for the Model S, and this pack is at least close to that much total capacity. Maybe equal capacity if it is software limited. Compared to the Model S pack this new 4680 Model Y pack also includes the on-vehicle charger, DC-DC converter, front seats, center console, carpet, and some of the BIW structure! All of that was separate for the Model S pack.
Model Y 4680 battery pack is ~68 kWh.
The structural pack will likely reduce weight in the frame, so just weighing the pack does not give the full picture on weight savings.
@@_PatrickO
Yes but 4680 cells are supposed to weigh less.
@@_PatrickO the Spoken Reviews channel had their Austin Y weighed and it was around ~4,300 lbs so it's only less than 200 lbs lighter that Fremont Y. Remember Austin 4680 Y has a smaller 68 kWh battery too. Basically, no magical weight reduction from structural pack.
@@officialyasir 200lbs of frame lost due to the pack being stiffer seems really good.
Great work getting this in and starting to open it up. It will be fun to see what is inside!

Its amazing what random strangers on the internet meeting up on the internet can do, content for the people from the people brought to you by RUclips.
I love coming to the comments and seeing all the big names in the Tesla community like Dave Lee and such. Really is such a different experience on RUclips
Utterly fantastic videos, gentlemen! One tip for anyone presenting live or on video to others: One must extract the space-filling "ers" and "uuhs" in one's speech pattern. I recognized it in myself as a young man about Julian's age, and over the course of a month, I consciously began embracing the pause and basically removed these filler speech tics from my presentation. It can be done and the difference is substantial. And like many who have gravitated to your channel, I am no engineer, but find myself absolutely fascinated with your content!
Even though I'm an aerospace engineering student I love all the insight they provide, also can't believe I work just down the road from these guys!

I can't believe that we can all get expert teardowns of Teslas (and others) for FREE now a days! Thank you so much for doing this work! Great move to utilise RUclips in this manner, you have a really great specialty to bring to the table. I’m a surgeon and this process reminds me of an autopsy…always find surprises and so much to discover!
I have the upmost respect for the expertise and lack of drama this channel provides. Very fantastic technical analysis in every video I've seen.
At 800*800 that's 640K for the battery pack. You guys deserve it, I just can't justify getting a cell for myself. I have been inspired to take a wrench and hammer on a model Y though. I might try full-time selling those hot little cells.
@Will Beebe 800 dollars, a bargain and you do get free shipping
They aren't selling every cell, so it's probably more like 800*600 or so.
It didn't look like fun removing a cell from a non structural pack. I can't wait to see how tough it will be be to pry one out of the goo in the structural pack. You may rethink your business model once that top comes off :)
@@oof_Dad Maybe they're planning to use a chemical adhesive solvent? That should make getting the individual cells out of a pack pretty simple... if not necessarily "easy".

Watched this about 3-4 times more. Will not be my last. Great video and descriptions!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Breathtaking. Amazing work Munro, Tesla and all supporters of this amazing innovation!
I have a free tip to reduce labor time/cost at Munro. Let your workers use power tools to remove bolts.
As they started, I was immediately concerned about the compression of that elastomeric seal in some spots. Glad it was mentioned. Wiring is being reduced, but would like to see it reduced even more. Somehow that focus was dropped, but I can imagine dropping the amount of wire by at least 2X compared to now. Obviously other things were more critical to focus on. But do expect major improvements to continue with time. Just love these tear downs. Great job!
The wiring had been explained.
They want to go for a 48v system, but nobody makes components.
@@rogerstarkey5390 No, the improvement we are looking for is reduction in total wires, not wire gauges. Tesla was supposedly to reducing the total amount of wiring by a lot with single wires going to components and daisy chaining. This most likely introduces reliability problems so they are progressing towards it over time instead of trying to do an immediate jump to the endgame.
@@_PatrickO
All part of the same plan
@@rogerstarkey5390 Nope, these are two completely and independent things. A single wire for power and communication has nothing to do with switching to 48v. The single wire solution is far bigger for weight reduction than going from 12v to 48v. It is why 48v is on the back burner, it isn't that important.
@@_PatrickO
Presumably, the "single wire" architecture will rely on unibody frame for current return and daisy chained addressable loads and/or current distribution hubs where wire gauge will change. Some of the constraints on wiring are built into legislated regulations so, like cameras replacing side mirrors, it will require a lot of lobbying and probably tortured test beds.

Very cool. After 40 years in aviation maintenance I am now a convert to electric. Wow boys! Excellent episode. This is seriously cool stuff. It is amazing the amount of progress Tesla makes on making their cars simpler and with fewer parts.
Oh man, I do understand why you are asking $800.00 for an individual battery cell. Just WoW though. For those whom think that this is a crazy high price, consider the total costs involved with both purchasing the vehicle and the human hours needed to, with skill and precision to pretty much deconstruct such an incredibly complex machine.
