  • I compare the brand new BMW R1300 GSA to my 4 year old and owned since new R1250 GSA, my old bike has become part of the family and has a charm that will be really hard to match up to never mind surpass. Find out how it compares and if it really is a worthy successor to the magnificent 1250.

I am a 1250gsa owner, bought it the day it came to the dealer. Now I had my day on the 1300 with ASA and even while I vowed to not buy another one, at 67 I bought the rally version. What an improvement on an already great machine.

Who have you watched you feel has been spoon fed what to say? Obviously professional moto journalists get "spoon feed" the bikes themselves, but that's not the same as "spouting the same bollocks", so curious to know who you feel is doing that.

Love listening to you talking bikes…so much sense and real world perspective on what the bikes are like. I’m really into the BMW automatic bikes that are coming to market and have ridden a DCT on Honda. I’ve ridden the standard gs asa and loved it so was glad to hear your thoughts. For me the asa was so much better at low speed handling too, which appears to be a main concern of critics to the system, but it’s better at clutch control than me and my overall ride was improved because of it. Like you say once you’re in and out of neutral and moving with a manual you’re often using a quick shifter…this asa just improves that convenience further and does it better…much like a quick shifter changes gears better. More positive reviews than negative and I can’t wait to get my hands on one. It’s not going to be for everyone, but maybe not everyone uses a remote control for their tv?!😂

Hi Si great real world review. So thanks for that. Id already decided to trade in my 1250 GSA to the 1300 GSA but wasn’t convinced about the ASA. But ive decided to rethink. How was the engine breaking ? Find I like that on the 1250 and did yourself reaching for the clutch out of muscle memory at low speeds. The measure of low speed stress is the green wellie parking on a busy day!! 😂

Glad it was helpful Jeremy, engine breaking must have been the same as the 1250 as I wasn't really conscious of it being any different. Great review Si and I don’t say that as a GS fan, I’m not, I don’t like big ADV bikes. The technology on my car drives me mad, I don’t want that on my bike. About half the cars I’ve ever owned have been automatics as is my current car, I don’t think I’ll ever buy another manual car. But on a motorcycle whilst I’m physically able to do so I’ll be sticking with a manual box and a clutch. Others may of course have different opinions.

I picked up my new R1250GSA Rallye nearly two years ago now and I have to admit it's the best bike I've ever owned after nearly fifty years of riding. If I was ever considering replacing it then this new 1300 would be high on the list. The only thing that would get in the way is I'll be much too old for such a big bike by the time my current GSA is worn out. Lol. The ASA clutch is a great idea as many bikes I've owned in the past have had stupidly heavy clutches even though some of those were hydraulic!. It will be interesting to see if BMW add the ASA to any other models as an option. I also went with 100% road tyres on my bike which transformed the road holding, the OEM Bridgestones were a little noisy but wore out very oddly the front wearing out in less than 8k klms and the rear looking like new!. I replaced them with Pirelli Angel Gt 2s and have not looked back. Sensational tyres.

Hi Simon. Enjoyed the review. No doubt the new GS adv moves the game on in terms of tech, engine and suspension refinements. I will research what it would take to get one to fit me on the configuration. I currently ride a low chassis 1250 GS Adv. On the 1250 you really need to play about not just with the mode settings but also the individual suspension settings if you are a keen rider. I’d recommend the Just the Way it is blog on You Tube: the best explanation bar none on suspension set up can be found there. On the 1300 I wish they could have reduced the weight more. And the price for a reasonably specced one is too high. Great work. Keep it up👍

Si, I had a 2023 DCT Africa Twin, which is a fantastic bike, but I felt it lacked engine braking, even in sports mode. So, I traded it in for a GS1250A 2024, which I've had for 6 months now. I've already put about 3,000 miles on it and I love it! However, I'm still drawn to the new GS1300A for reasons I haven’t fully figured out yet. Your review was fantastic-very honest and free from a sales pitch.
So, here’s my question: In normal mode, did you find the engine braking adequate enough that you didn't have to rely solely on the front brake?

    • @simotofoto
      @simotofoto  3 месяца назад +1

Great question, I cant actually remember lol, It didn't seem any different character wise to the 1250, jus spins up quicker and seems to rev a little harder but I do remember canceling the cruise and same as the 1250 it halls up really quick with engine braking. Hope that helps mate

I have a 1250 GSA. I’m fine with the new design, except for the beak…a little too squared off. Maybe the aftermarket will notice at some point and tweak it a bit, not a showstopper from purchasing though. Strange that when you talk about suspension settings you appear to have missed out that you can vary the settings within the various modes. The standard setting in each mode is "0" but you can go in to the menus and stiffen or relax the ride within each mode by adjusting from Zero to "-1" or -"2' or "+"1" or +"2". Also I note from the display that the bike had the adaptive vehicle height control yet you made no mention. of it. It is one of the key (optional) differences from the 1250 model so Im surprised that you didn't refer to this.

I have tried messing with the settings on the suspension, I have even asked my friend who is one of the best suspension engineers out there for help with it but it appears at my bulk its just not up to dealing with the additional weight. If you have managed to dial it in for yourself fantastic I hope it serves you well for many years to come. Cheers Si

Great question, I would consider the new GS as sports tourer, its really agile, and really sharp, in comparison the GS adventure is more of a tourer for doing some serious miles on, feels a little more laid back. I think the standard GS is more exciting to ride but for an everyday bike the adventure would win it for me, its not cumbersome just not as sharp as the GS but has more in its locker.

Great review mate . But at £23000 the shaft drive should be serviceable not a consumable at the cost of customer.

Have to say I agree with both of you, My GS1250 Adventure, which was recently liberated by a set of balaclava'd affirmative shoppers, felt great going it to the corners, and always filled me with confidence . I received my GS1300Aventure on Saturday , the first corner I went into with a fair lead angle, it just dropped in so much easer, it actually surprised me. Lets just say BMW have managed to improve on perfection.

I know this is a work of art and technology. But don't you think it is an overpriced gadget after all. How many people can afford and maintain this bike. In my country it is 35k pounds. So I had to go Chinese. Voge and cfmoto. Two bikes less than 10k. And i believe Royal enfield is doing a great job by offering lots of capable bikes for reasonable prices also.

What is it with all these bloggers waving their left hand around when they talk? You are on a bike , keep both hands on bars you never know what is about to happen. Great stuff but ride safe!

Not inspired whatsoever to have one of these over my 1250. Its a very expensive "upgrade" of a bike that is still brilliant. And personally I just cant get past the looks ( some videos have taken to stating the looks dont really matter.... they do for me !), it is dreadful.
