How to keep your ROOF COOL IN HOT SUMMERS | Tried and Tested

  • Summers in Bangalore have been crazy for the past couple of years. We stay in the top floor and right on top of our floor is an open terrace. It has been quite difficult for us staying at home during weekends while we were not at work. And with our little toddler at home now, it was high time we do something about it.
we discovered this heat resistant/reflective paint that was less unknown to the common people as it was used widely only in factories and industrial set up. They promised to reduce the temperature by 6 - 7 degrees. So gave them a go ahead with little feedback about the product.
We did applied this Excel Cool Coat right above our roof (terrace) and indeed, it's really helping now. Our ceiling fan doesn't throw hot air and our apartment remains much cooler now.
Hope this would be a remedy for folks who are facing the same problem.
I would say get your terrace painted, you won't regret!
This video will tell you how to apply the paint.
    1000 sq ft = 40 liters = INR 13000 = 2 Coating

Last week I tried this method on my house slab with 5Kg White cement + 8L water + Fevicol and Dr.Fixit. It was too watery. I had to do 3 coates to get a good whiteness.
Two days ago I did it on parents slab with a different proportion and it was perfect with two coats.
My mixing was as below. This mix consistency comes good as paint we buy. This mix covers 40 square meters with two coats.
    10Kg White Cement
    10L water
    2L Fevicol SH
    1L Dr.Fixit Latex plus
BTW, Dr.Fixit 101 is made for concrete. I used 308 Latex Plus which is perfect for a cement mix to be applied as covering layer.

Its useless to coat the terrace floor, if you have a lot of dirt in air
I did it two years back, but this needs to be cleaned every other day, otherwise a dirt accumulated of three days on terrace, just makes the terrace floor color BROWN, grey, then its the same story.
The best solution is to make a shed of metal sheets, or green polyester mesh, on terrace, they keep shade on terrace
But if one feels to do this only, then don't use this chemical paint, because this doesn't have a good life, if terrace is walked over daily
Best use white cement, and apply a layer of 2-3 mm thickness on Terrace. Its would be way cheaper than this. And will last longer

Did the white surface really help to reduce the heat below? If so, what percentage of heat got reduced? I also heard there is a German product like a resin which absorbs heat unlike just a white paint.... any idea about that product?

    • @Taggers
      @Taggers  5 лет назад +2

James the product did help in reducing the heat at least by 4 - 5 degree celsius for the first 1 - 2 year... 3rd year onwards the effectiveness slowly went down... Now I would rather go for simple white wash which would be much cost effective.. am not aware of the German product u r referring to...

Hi Narayan, Yes the paint we have applied is really good and helping in reduce the heat inside the house. This is the second year and it is still going good, the air inside the house is not hot anymore when the fan is switched on, like it used to be before the application. Though, I would say that maintaining it is important. Continuous exposure to dirt can impact the performance and reduce the life of the paint. Hope this helps and thank you for your appreciation.

White color reflects the light away, thereby making sure the surface doesn't get heated. White color is the main ingredient. You can check by using a white and black umbrella, and see which one is cooler to stand under.
