After reading the comments, even if there are better designs, the fact that it was pumping out 40F air AND it lowered a tent that isn’t insulated in direct sunlight over 10+ degrees is a great proof of concept.
Love to see a video with a well-insulated YETI cooler and different pipe design and block ice. Be interesting to see how more effective that would be

I have a smaller version of this for my AZ shop. I use block ice (as it lasts WAY longer) and a styrofoam barrier between the ice block and the lid. I learned if you put AZ heated air directly across ice, it won’t last. The styro sheet is 2” from the shorter walls and it makes it all work much longer.

I have some USB charged battery powered fans that would work while camping , for me I have a couple power systems that can run a USB fan for days on a single charge . Might be a fun addition to the family camping gear , I wouldn't use it myself when I am out with just me and the dog but when we all go out I'm sure a couple people in the family would love it . I would probably use a combination of large ice blocks plus cubed ice , maybe even put a couple diverters on the lid to increase the distance the air has to move over the ice before exiting at the vent . I've done something similar in the past by just opening the ice chest with blocks in it and pointing a fan at it but these days battery powered devices are much better than they used to be so a dedicated device isn't out of the question .

Putting water and salt on ice is actually really smart, because firstly, the water-ice mixture will always retain a constant temperature of 0 degree Celsius, due to heat transfer during the solid to liquid state change. Also, salty water has a lower freezing point than pure water (which is the reason why salts are used on roads in winter to prevent ice from forming). This further reduced the mixture temperature from 0 to below 0, and heat is absorbed from the air during the process. The colder mixture temperature resulted in much colder air being blown out, which accelerated the cooling of the tent :D

    • @Hellofriend88

Use 2 inch pvc pipes and elbows to create a folding labyrinth of pipe work inside your cooler. Each end of the pipe should project out of your cooler’s long length. Using a 12 volt computer fan at one end to drive the ambient air through the pipe network, you load up your cooler with ice cubes and in a few minutes you have nice chilled air coming out of the opposite end. The benefit is the warm air never touches the ice surface and the ice lasts much, much longer. Even when fully melted the cold water still chills the pvc ductwork and any air pushed through it. This is an old undercover surveillance vehicle trick for long stakeouts in hot cars and vans.

Na, just a straight pipe down to almost the bottom of cooler with ice to the top. And a drain pipe to remove all melt. Air will naturally make a better labyrinth through the ice. And direct contact with ice is better. If you want the temp to actually drop by 20-30° needs to be direct. Otherwise of course yours is second best and lasts way longer. I wanna see a comp between the two

The rack has to support the ice while in-between the ice and the fan, there must be an divider such as thick Styrofoam. The Styrofoam stops the outside air from hitting the ice sideways. The styrofoam must be cleared at the bottom of cooler by at least 2 inches while at top leaving no room for the fans air to travel across the top of cooler while lid is closed. Adding water is a big no no. You want air traveling through as much ice as possible. Ideally you’d run a pipe down 3” from the bottom of cooler deep in the ice. You’d also want to connect a drain pipe to it and run outside of tent. Really simple design still just two more items. I hope you’ll try it again. Fill ice to the top. But keep the melted ice out of cooler. Or most of it out. So you’ll have air traveling through a ton of ice. I bet it’ll really work. Of course the cfm matters so the more the merrier..

With a large freezer at home prior to heading out could freeze gallons of water that would last longer. Then, pack store ice around the blocks.
If you insulate the exterior with board insulation would keep the ice in tact for an extended period. Wrap it in a low temp sleeping bag on all sides except top. Or, try the insulation on the inside. Anything to prolong the ice.
This is a really cool idea.

so I have a house that has two ACs in it, one for the original part of the house, and another that cools down the newer addon side. The one that's meant to cool down the smaller side shut down, and it's gonna be another 10 days until somebody is going to be able to repair it. I live in Texas, and this is July with a record smashing summer. So we've been roughing it with poor mans swamp coolers (towels soaked in water hanging on towel racks in front of a big fan). It took me a little bit but I figured out the same thing you did - adding salt, ice, and water together is the ticket. I use a generous amount of salt, and when I'm mixing in the water I can feel my hand get WAAAAY colder. I then leave the big bowl of it next to the fan with a measuring cup in it, and every so often I'll pour more water over the towels, and it works way better. If you guys need to make ANYTHING cold with ice, and it's not going to get ruined with salt, ALWAYS use salt, water, and ice together. Even cools down drinks 10x as fast.

I'm not sure who goes camping to spend the day inside their tent. During hot summer weather consider a double wall (full coverage rain fly with a separate tent body) tent where the tent body itself is mostly mesh. This greatly increases air circulation.

Thanks for this DIY cooling idea; prefer general tent advices: 1.) roof & wall insulation (dry & temperature) by 2-wall tent (air between walls) or 2nd tarp over the tent, 2.) sun protection by (heat ray and light) reflecting outer wall material/color like white, light gray or mirror color aluminum foil or emergency blanket, 3.) ground insulation (dry & temperature) by air filled air mattress.

yea I agree with out insulation you can't prevent the daytime heat from entering the tent for the cool air to be effective at lowering the temp. I think that's why this implementation works better after sunset and night time.

Then seal it with caulk & make a drain valve above the aluminum plate. THEN put your ice on top of that. The cooling chips will make the ice last longer & keep it cool when melted.
