If you're interested in an air conditioned tent, I highly recommend the Midea U-Shaped window AC. You can set it on the ground, and there's a u channel where the tent wall can fit, so that you have the controls and fan inside the tent, but the hot air exhaust is outside just like it would be in an actual window. It accomplishes the exact same thing you're set-up does, except no need for jury-rigging.

You have a great idea here. Let me give you a few ideas to improve efficiency. Comfort cooling is removing heat from an area and rejecting it somewhere that it doesn't matter. Also humidity is what makes you uncomfortable not temperature. It can be 70 degrees with 90% humidity and be you'll be sweating and if you have 50% humidity you might be cold. So your first attempt needed insulation to be sure but your return air should be removing the heat up high and your supply would be good in the middle location which will pull some cool air upwards as well. The vent sizes you have are entirely to small. You need roughly 400 cfm for every 12,000 BTU or 1 ton. In a residential heating and cooling scenario this is 4, 6" lines per ton. You were only giving approximately 50 cfm of return and 30 cfm of supply, hence your temp inside the box showed 5 degrees. The ac was starving for air and freezing, this would eventually be a block of ice. I would use at a minimum of an 8" return and a 7" supply for 5k BTU. I believe if you made these changes on the first set up you would see significantly better results along with putting a tarp over the tent 1' to 2' above would help tremendously!
Your second attempt while definitely better eliminating the heat gain in the ductwork and lack of air flow to the ac was much better! I would change 1 thing. You ducted the heat outside the tent which is great! However, you need to pull the air that is exhausted from outside the tent from outside. This will make the air pressure neutral and you won't constantly be pulling outside air in. They are made to be put in a window and operate this way. If you simply put it through the wall of the tent where it would be lined up with a window or wall like you install it in a house, you would stop approximately 2 to 300 cubic feet per minute of humid and outside air from entering the tent. That alone would make a huge difference in your overall comfort.
Hope this info helps and would love to see more of your journey on this! You've given me a few ideas to try myself!

      @The12231 Месяц назад +3

I agree completely with this. I studied refrigeration in college. You can use an online ductulator to calculate duct diameter, given BTUs and CFM.
The shorter the duct of cold air the better, since there's less surface area to transfer that heat from the outside into the air that you want cooled. If you can insulate the duct, then yeah, you'll get better temps on the cold side.
Keep it up! Great project overall. You're on the right track

This is a comment i was happy to read. You said far more than I would have. I would have only said that the inside attempt would have been better if the box covered the back entirely like you said. It was pulling some air from inside to cool the heat exchanger and reducing the efficiency. The Ecoflow Wave and Wave 2, could totally be used for this. They have a portable battery option that claims 8 hours on low cooling.

I did a similar experiment using a window AC unit and running a 30' hose just like yours to another room. I ran it for about 5 hours and I noticed the cold air couldn't travel that far without losses. I live in the southwest, so I have a massive AC unit outside with insulated tubing in the attic, ect. The cooling, even with the insulated tubing in the attic, just really lacks and uses an insane amount of electricity. I moved my window AC unit to my bedroom and I can easily get it down to 75 all day at 550 kWh, as opposed to using the main unit 3,500kWh which can't even maintain that temperature which all the vents closes except for the bedroom. The units just have to cool the tubes and the tubes are being heated. Cool experiment, thanks for the video!

Necessity is the mother of invention routine.
In Vegas we have 110° outside and 78°inside.
Supply air is 54° degrees which gives a temperature differential of 24 which is huge. 78-54 =24.
Comfort cooling is removing warm air so the cool air does it's Job.
When the outside temperature lowers so will the electric bill.
I tryed this and ended buying a camper with AC.

What a fabulous idea!! I do not know a thing about air conditioning technology, but I think your brining the unit inside the tent helped the unit perform the way it was designed to do so. Only think I would do is erect a nice tarp over the top the entire tent. The tarp would be black or dark grey or such on the bottom side, but white or very light color on the top side facing the sun. That way, the top would reflect the sun heat, but the dark color on the bottom side would keep it dark in the space over your tent. Did not even think of the condensation which you mentioned. But this would be perfect summer camping for sure. Blessings.

Lots of great ideas from people who know their stuff!
One comment from me would be, that insulated 4-season tent is really made for keeping the cold out, and the heat in. A black tent is going to absorb so much solar heat. Either a light colored tent, or a popup shade over the tent to keep the direct sun off would make a huge difference. Then, you could quit battling the sun's heat and concentrate on the actual cooling more.
Keep up the awesome inventive content!

A couple of observations. The bottom of the tent is not sealed and all the cooler air just goes right out. The other is don't be afraid to cut that tube down. It looks like you are using a standard 15 foot dryer vent. The easiest and very inexpensive way to insulate the supply dryer vent is to just wrap it in a couple of layers of bubble wrap. That captive air space will work just like a double pained glass. Just take your 15 foot dryer vent and cut it into 2 or 3 more convenient lengths. Your cardboard attachment to the AC is great!

The other thing about the portable AC units is they're HUGE! I have one in my bedroom because a window unit won't fit in my rental apartment and it's massive compared to a small small window ac unit. I have a tiny Chevy Trax and there's no way I could fit my big "portable" AC unit with all my camping gear and my dogs but I'm sure I could fit a small window unit. Great video because I've been thinking about doing this for awhile. I live in LA, CA and camp in the desert and it's 110 most days in the summer which really limits when I can camp. This will be soooooo helpful!!

One thing to consider is that these air conditioners create condensation some of that condensation is flung around by the fan to cool the coils which would be flinging it all over you and the tent it’s also recommended that they be at a slight angle backwards so the condensation doesn’t go the wrong direction possibly ruin the electrical parts on the face of the unit I had this happen once because I didn’t have it installed properly.

Props to you for undertaking this. You made it work! Thinking the tarp might really help. You also mentioned the portables. If you can find one on sale, it would probably be a lot easier (and easier to transport). You only have to use an exhaust hose... This was fun - thanks!

I'm new to your channel. I love it!! You have a really nice setup to keep cool. The only thing I would do differently is leave the AC at home and bring a bucket of liquid oxygen with me (since I generate it in my basement using a cryocooler) and I would just dump a bunch inside my insulated tent and then use a fan to convect the remaining amount. Fire hazard? Yes. BUT suffocation hazard? No! Maybe you could bring a bucket of liquid nitrogen too to dilute the mixture 😂

I'm no expert but it seems a fat foam weatherstrip on your plenum edge would have been beneficial and cheap. If you cut that 3 inch hose down, you'd get way better flow. Every bend adds like 3 feet of effective length. That's making the fan work harder plus added backpressure pushing back into the hot air intake. Assuming you don't mind the noise inside, of course. That does seem to work well.

I am a HVAC technician and installer what the problem is is that you have an air conditioner that’s too small BTUs wise for that tent because of all the heat that’s coming through that 5000 BTU will take up about 175 ft.² but that’s a normal insulated room and insulated duck so I suggest you get maybe a 12,000 BTU to 15,000 BTU To take care of that area, 12,000 BTUs can take care of up to 500 ft.² when it’s properly insulated and the ductwork is properly installed 18,000 BTUs does about 800 ft.² and so on and so on

My first thought was wondering why you put the unit outside to begin with. I'd just set up my portable A/C inside the tent and run the exhaust pipe out through a hole or, like you did with the Reflectix in the window. That's how I do it at home. I think your cool air tube was way too long, so you're losing temp in the distance.
Another thing that would increase efficiency is placing a tarp above your tent or at least angled down on the side in the sun. Then put everything under the tarp shade. Also, I wrap Reflectix around my exhaust pipe. Huge difference!

Pretty cool experiment.I do have a travel trailer with a c Fully self-contained. I look at it this way if it's so hot. You're gonna hang out in your camper. Why go camping, I enjoy swimming, walking playing basketball horse shoes. Just my opinion take care thanks for the video

My question, where is the condensation dripping inside the enclosure?

    • @BaumOutdoors
      @BaumOutdoors  Месяц назад +2

A unit like this actually reuses the condensation to help cool the air. You may have to drain it at some point but mine didn’t need draining this time.

You need to go to Harbor Freight and get one of their cheap silver tarps to put over the Icehouse. #1 It shades the tent. #2 It reflects heat. #3 it will help keep the rain off. Keeping it a couple of inches above should help.

I only have one dislike, as a Washington resident, I so badly wish I could figure out some of the amazing locations you film in so my wife and I could go to some of them. I can't blame you for being vague and keeping some of those gems to yourself.

Awesome idea, Kenny. Yes, I would love to see you take the ac with you. But unless you use a bottomless floor tent, the ac will leak all on your floor, so gotta figure something out for that. Too bad the first one didn't work too well. Oh well, just gotta think of something for the leaking ac. "Wait," I got it, a big turkey pan, the cheap ones you get from the dollar store that only cost a dollar or two. Then just set the ac inside of the turkey pan, I just hope the ac isn't to big for the pan hmmm🤔 maybe set it on a couple of 2x4's over top of the turkey pan or a couple of turkey pans.
You probably already thought of all this, 😆 🤣 but never know. That's why I threw it out there for ya.
I'd love to see you camping, but I don't want you burning up just so we could watch. So if you can't figure anything out, don't worry about camping until the weather cools down.
Give hugs to your beautiful family.
This was a great video by the way thank you so much for sharing. Stay awesome, Kenny.
    KEEP ADVENTURING
    GOD BLESS Y'ALL

My parents were camping in air conditioned tents 30 years ago. Their tent had a window opening. Daddy built a table to set the AC on it, Mama made the surround to keep bugs out. They threw blankets on top of the tent under rain fly and threw huge tarp over the rain fly for shade and keep blankets dry from dewfall at night. They were glamping before it had a name!
