  • October has us busy harvesting, clearing up and tidying. Some planting of crops for the winter season, too.
    But today, I will be clearing some of the spent plants in the Kitchen garden, mainly peas and broad beans and harvesting all of the corn.
    Things do not always go to plan and the pumpkins are making me question things.....
    I hope you'll enjoy it, and if you do, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe for all the latest updates.

    If you buy seeds (for example) of Red Kouri pumpkin and Butter pumpkin and plant them near to each other, you will still get those exact varieties on each vine. However the resulting seeds (next generation) of both those varieties will vary due to cross pollination

    I had the same thing happen to me and my winter squash this year! Planted 4 varieties (Acorn, Jack O'Lantern, Butternut, and Nanticoke), and had several mystery squashes... the jack o'lanterns and butternuts (which were store-bought seed) were easy enough to spot, but the acorn squash came from a neighborhood swap. Now I have several long, dark green ones that look more like courgettes, and many that I suppose could be acorn squash, but their shape is pear-shaped, and a few little ones that look like ornamental gourds. I haven't cut into any of them to see what lies inside. I'll be curious if yours turn out to be edible!

      😀💚🌿 the cross pollination does happen and sometimes they can get bitter if the plant was too stressed because of the growing conditions. I did chat to my mum about those seeds over the weekend and she confirmed the seeds were from a pumpkin off another grower, but not guaranteed clean pollination.

    Hey Maiju, you are such a natural with the camera! I always really look forward to your videos :D. and I have just learnt sth new today, about cross pollination and toxicity. I had no idea! And I may have damned one of my pumpkins this way, by hand pollinating with another type's male flower, as there were none available of it's own kind. eh, well... now I know. Maiju, can I please draw on your gardening experience to decide how to handle potted perennials that I have? Long story short, I ended up not having any garden space ready for lupins, verbena and echinacea that I grew from seed this spring. So I put them all in (hopefully decent size) pots for the season. I will soon have that space and will want to move them from pots into the ground. I think its best to cut perennials in the spring, not autumn, but should I do it now, because I am stressing them by replanting? Or will they be fine until spring? Lupins have actually flowered for me this first season (but flowers gone now), verbena too and its still going. But no flowers on echinacea. I would be grateful for any tips once you are feeling better! All the best!! :)

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Justyna 🥰Always good to hear from you and thank you, feeling much better already 💚🌿
      The plants will be absolutely fine in the pots as they are, If you still have the old flower stalk on the Lupin (maybe even seed pods on it) I would cut that back. The rest of the foliage can stay as is, there is no need at all to remove it before winter. It might be better to gather those pots together so you can protect them with a horticultural fleece if it comes down to really hard cold weather during mid-weather, and not to use any ''saucers'' under the pots to gather rainwater and the plants can drown in this wet weather.....other than that, you'll be fine to plant them now or wait until spring.
      As far as the pumpkins go..I actually replied to another comment with much more detail, specifically about the cross pollination, but I could not ''Pin'' it...so if you can look that up under this same video, it might clarify a side of it that I didn't talk about 😊
      All the best, Maiju 😊💚🌿

    Evening dear, I think they call it, calm before the storm as there's a weakened hurricane heading your way for Sat, night Sun, morn. So batten down the hatches and be prepared. Did you say you still have corn left to pick, mine was all in the freezer by mid July and the mice eat the last couple of very smalls cobs. You had a bit of cold, then you better out than in if you are strong enough, but if I get like that it's Night nurse before bed for 2 days then you are back on your feet. I brought a bottle with me when I came here 5 years ago, is still in bathroom cabinet un opened as never had flue or cold for more than6 years now. Drier climate helps.Early Bird from Kings seeds is a very good variety and is what it says, early it will grow 2 but personally I take 1 off and let the first formed grow, that way you get a bigger cob. Easy answer to that, if you want to buy in bulk and use the same variety every year buy for a few years, use what you need at put the rest in the bottom of the fridge, fridge not freezer As they will keep for years so if seed gets expensive or that very good variety you like isn't available any more just go into the fridge and there you have. I brought a lot with me from AU.K. and run out of certain ones this year so had my friend bring me few supplies this which will give a few more years of the ones I like.Get well soon.

      Hi Robert and greeting to sunny Portugal 🥰💚🌿
      You're brilliant for all of this information, I took a note of the Night Nurse, I'm always waiting too long before I go to the pharmacy...Thank you 😊
      I also looked up the Earlibird F1 and it does have high praise for the early maturing and sweet tasting quality.
      I had none of my corn harvested until that video as the ears were tiny, I've opened all of them now and they are immature baby-corn cobs. I was sure I had taken a videoclip of this, but once I was editing, It wasn't there...🤦‍♀️
      The taste was delicious though, really crunchy and sweet and they will be perfect for eating raw with a hummus or dip or used in a stir-fry. Also the cobs were long and slender, so all was not lost, there is enough for 1 family meal or 2 separate sides 💚🌿

    I think your theory is wrong toxic squash happens in the Pepo varieties when you cross Zucchini or patty pan squash with ornamental gourds, your pumpkins look like Maxima's Kuri squash are Maxima's and look like a cross between Butter Cup and Crown Prince Squash there are many different varieties of Kuri squash

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses  Месяц назад +1

      Thank you so much for your comment 💚 it's really good to bring up these topics, and often, I brush over an aspect of a growing issue in my garden as I'm assuming the viewer being familiar with it and also there's nobody to ask further questions there and then when filming 😅 Believe you me, all that the hens want to know about - is there any worms 🪱 and Spuds - when are you throwing the ball? 🤭
      I was referring to the odd size of the pumpkin as I was expecting the fruit look more like a Kuri(which I have grown before) and being a shape being different also immediately makes me question about a potential crosspollination and bitter/toxic syndrome. I have no way of knowing what got cross pollinated with the variety I was told should be a Kuri as I received the seed off my mum, but she didn't grow the squash herself, just harvested the fruit out of a squash she had bought for dinner 😊
      All squashes can cross pollinate within its species - all Pepo varieties can pollinate with other Pepo varieties, all Maxima varieties pollinate with Maxima etc. Stressful growing conditions can also trigger the toxic syndrome, the main thing is to not continue eating anything from the cucurbit family fruit if it tastes bitter 💚
      But if I only have Amish Pie pumpkin growing (Maxima species) and Crown Prince (Pepo species) growing side by side, I can save seed for the following year and they should come through normal as the species don't cross pollinate. But you never know what your neighbour is growing and the bees 🐝 travel long distances... so really always check for bitterness if the fruit looks funny and buy seed from store or handpollinate to save your own seed for next year 😊💚🌿 I hope this clarifies my thought process about those pumpkins
