    They’re simply enormous. Wow, wow, and even more wow. Never seen anything like them! 😂❤❤❤😮
    What a bumper harvest. Those apples looked delicious too.
    Funny how the extra space on the field side looks so integral now. Just a few short month la is all it took to make that area blend in like it’s always been part of the kitchen garden.
    Hope you didn’t suffer too much from the storm. Enjoying this period of more settled and drier weather here.

    I had heard about your storm warning… glad it wasn’t too bad.
    I sure hope you got a still photo with your gigantic carrots👏👏. Like you say “rain, rain” has it’s benefits. In our small garden here in Edmonton my husband says we spend more on watering than we save in growing some food. Our season is short & we enjoy it as a hobby after a long winter. Just as well😂. We save winter but it’s not enough 🤷‍♀️.
    Beautiful picture at the end with your lovely October harvest.

    Immense carrots there Maiju - maybe an opportunity for a batch of carrot & coriander soup for the freezer? Had one of those blue sky autumnal days here yesterday where it was a joy to clear the veg plot of courgette and French bean haulms, reveal the soil, feed the active compost bin and be surrounded by robins declaring their territory. Another lovingly-crafted video.

    What a lovely long video. With what are you fertilising your carrot bed? It can't be just rain. You definitely win on size this season, hope they are tasty too! Congrats on new raised beds, and what a great idea to start in autumn and fill it with garden waste.

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks a million 🥰 Early in the year I probably added some seaweed granules to the whole bed and a thin layer of compost, but after that, nothing else. I did sow sparsely, but also had very poor germination, hence no need to thin down and they probably had much more space to grow to get to the size they were 😀
      Filling the base of the new planter with spent foliage is making the cleaning up so easy, I definitely don't mind this type of shortcut 😊💚🌿

  • @myrustygarden
    @myrustygarden Месяц назад

    As it’s winter 🥶 you can add grasses etc too and make a new as you say compost bin to grow in next spring. I hope by the time you read this the storm has passed and you are all ok. It has been a very strange weather year 😢. Have a great day Maiju and stay safe, Ali 🥶2c🇨🇦

      Is it getting cold in Canada, Ali? Get the winter woolies out 🥰 Its been really damp here and we've been having real fire down every evening at the moment, even though its not that cold....
      The storm left a bit of damage behind (🤫the arches are goners) but all in all it was ok, the season for the winter storms is only starting now. The most damaging ones we seem to be getting are February ones...
      Have a great weekend Ali and stay warm 🤗 Best wishes, Maiju 💚🌿

    I filled two raised beds the same way was great having compost bin for a while. My garden is small but I'm trying to set up a compost system in my son's garden 😂.
    Would it not be better to level the ground for the planter instead of putting one end the planter on bricks and having gaps.
    I'm planting my spring bulbs at the moment. Over 300 and I just can't get over were there gone

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses  Месяц назад

      Oh wow, Elaine, spring will greet you with plenty of colour 😍
      I tried to dig the higher side in, and managed about 4 inches, but then failed 😂 the ground is soooo hard there and the slope severe 🙈 I might give it another go in a couple of weeks time if I find motivation and energy 😊
      I'm loving the empty planter as a composting system, makes such an easy work of getting the spent foliage out of the way and tidying the space quicker 😊💚🌿

  • @robertlee6479
    @robertlee6479 Месяц назад

    Use peat to fill them with as you have no need to change it, just put fertiliser in a new or use your seaweed extract even better. In that container no problem with carrot fly as they only fly 6" above the ground.. No I wouldn't do that. Peat is 100% organic and can be left for ever, just rotate your crops as you would in the garden. You can buy 250 ltr bales as is much cheaper and buy Irish moss peat or Klassman 2 I would stay in the garden a sod the soccer match. I see you have Rowan so I take it you are going to make jelly with those.. 24 here yesterday cooler today as a little rain coming, but will wait and see. spuds growing very fast so will expect new spuds in about 4 weeks at present growth rate.. Those roots of peas and beans are nitrogen fixers so yes you do right to leave them in the ground. I leave everything in the ground when done as is time consuming taking too the compost heap and even more time bringing it back again, so never make compost, it still goes back in the ground

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses  Месяц назад

      Hi, its quite mild here currently also, 12-14C 😀
      The rootfly seems to find its way into the planters....if they're flying from the bottom of the field upwards, yes the planter ridge is above them......but....if they're coming from the orchard side, then the planter is like on a basement level 😂...So not taking those chances....
      Our son was actually playing so I def had to attend and take him there 😊 they're too quick to fly the nest so I rather take my opportunities where I can ❤️
      Would you grow cover crops over winter or are you using the mulching system instead of composting?
      Best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿

    Lovely video - just right for an autumn evening’s watching. Fantastic harvest - and those carrots are ridiculous!
    I’ve read that cross-pollinated squashes are only toxic if the cross is with ornamental squash, not with other edible squash. Do you know if that’s true? Also, what make are the metal raised beds?
    Hope the storm wan’t too bad!

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses  Месяц назад

      Aww, thank you, very kind 😍💚🌿
      In my understanding any of the cucurbit family fruit can end up toxic if grown under stress. It is the chemical cucurbitacin that is toxic and really commonly found in cucumbers. The main thing is not to be scared of it, just give a piece of the fruit a ''lick'' and if tasting bitter, not to eat it as it has high levels of cucurbitacins in it and those are harmful when digested.
      A lot of ornamental squash varieties are edible, but they can cross pollinate witing its species. i.e. Pepo varieties can pollinate with other Pepo varieties, Maxima can pollinate with other Maxima varieties and the plant grown from a seed of a cross pollinated has a higher chance to produce bitter fruit. But don't quote me on it 😂
