I've been waiting for a while to harvest those! Main crop POTATO and YACON Harvest!
From the end of November and up until now, the weather had been swinging between freezing cold temperatures and mild days and winter storms. It really has been all over the place, plus most of it has happened over the weekend days, the only days I would have possibility to garden 😀
But with little moments here and there, I have managed to get garlic planted, some of the old foliage removed from the Blueberry beds and the Cottage Garden and the Yacon harvested.
Actually, the Yacon harvest was one of the most pressing jobs to get done before any more of freezing temperatures are setting in as this plant is not fully cold hardy.
I was really happy with the results, plus the Cara potatoes harves...

How I'm preparing the garden for winter...Resourceful way to fill NEW RAISED BEDS | What I'm growing

November is a great month to clear the garden from old vegetation, plant some winter hardy veggies or just for a general pottering in the garden when weather permits 😊💚🌿 This is another slightly longer episode as I had a couple of days to spend in the garden filling up the second of the new metal raised beds/planters, planting over-winter broad beans and onions, plus an update on the aftermath ...

I'm playing a bit of catch-up, but mainly prepping the garden before our 1st winter storm ''Ashley'' arrives. I don't think you planted the Mashua properly, you should start them at the bottom of the container and then add soil as the stems grow, add soil to it on a regular basis until you reach the top of the container. The tubers grow on the stem not on the roots and since the stems were all exposed you got very little growth of tubers. You might want to grow your tubers in a very sandy soil or one with a lot of perlite in it so that the soil doesn't get so compacted and allows the tumors to grow.

      @spudsandroses 16 дней назад

      Hi, you're very much correct, I didn't give the tubers the best start and I also actually harvested them way too early 🙈 I've learned from it and this year I have them planted in a much larger raised bed, that also has a trellis to climb onto. The whole growth has been excellent this year, and it was still flowering a couple of weeks ago. I'm thinking of harvesting them in Jan or Feb, depending on the weather....it has been really mild now again, no frost since early Dec. 😊💚🌿

      Thank you, Emma 🤗💚🌿 There are more and more permaculture inspired plants being introduced or being revealed through much bigger exposed network of growers than before (likes all of us on YT), is my take of it. And moving towards more of the regenerative, perennial planting, rather than only annuals growing is a win-win💚 It was actually through me trying to resource Yacon, a few years ago, that I also got offered Oca and Mashua by the same grower, and now all 3 are an amazing addition to our garden 😀

    The hens always make me simle. What a lovely opening!! 😊 We are getting cold weather too. It is dry at least. Getting lots of things done though. I have not seen Yacon before. It is nice to see your experiments. I went to an interesting garden centre in West Cork this week! Have you ever tried to grow plants that like acidic soil? Thank you for the lovely video. Perhaps you are going to Finland soon! 🙂All the best for Christmas🎄 💚💚💚

      Thanks a million, your a star! 🥰💚🌿 The hens are my curious companions 😀 getting into everything! There is a fantastic garden centre near Bantry - Future Forests.....is that what you visited? Compostable toilets and green roofs? 😍 The only acidic loving plants I have are Blueberries, Heathers, Azaleas and a Rhododendron. All of the ornamental plants are in our front yard. We are indeed heading towards the northern Europe, Estonia to be exact 🥰Really looking forward to it 🙌

      @spudsandroses I know about Future Forests too, but I have not been there. It looks amazing.🙂 But I could not go as it would have been too far from where we were. Perhaps I will do a postal order from them this year. I went to Deelish garden centre in Skibbereen. It was nice but it may not be as good as the garden centre relatively near to you, you showed it in a video before, it looks perfect. 🙂 But I thought Deelish was better than the ones in Cork anyway. I have a Blueberry plant to in a pot with ericaceous compost. But I was thinking of getting one or two of the acidic liking shrubs like Azaleas or Rhododendrons. I was unsure if they would be a bit fussy like the Blueberry. Do you grow you acidic plants in the ground? I was just a bit worried about trying that. Ah... Estonia.🙂It seems to be a lovely place. I remember seeing the Christmas market in Tallinn old town. It is magical. It should be an exciting trip for all your family. I hope the hens will not miss you too much. ☺ Thank you.

      @@user-mc9tq7zk7s ooh, I haven't got to Skibbereen yet 😀 that is quite far down...... Yes, all of the plants, except for 2 potted small azaleas are in the ground. Initially planted with ericaceous compost, but then left with no further amendments. And they all seem very good. Heathers are especially thriving. The vine weevil did set back a couple of azaleas, but they're slowly bouncing back. We are planning to go to the Tallinn Christmas market, too...it has gotten a lot of praise 😍 and yes, we're well excited about the trip! 🥰 Worrying about Spuds and the hens while we're gone is the only damper on the whole thing, but some things cannot be postponed... 😊💚🌿

    Hi Maiju, the yacon is interesting so the five separated new plants would you expect to get the same as you got off this one plant times five? Though if I remember that original plant is two years? Great harvest of Cara and a bonus harvest.

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses 23 дня назад

      Hi Ady 😀 You remember well 😊 I was being so careful with my 1st original crown. It was a small one and I planted in a pot, as I was unsure where to grow it etc. And it really did not do much as I showed in the Oca/Mashua video last year. But it survived and grew. This year I added the second variety and planted both rhizomes outside (in the old raspberry bed that never materialized into an asparagus bed as I neglected the asparagus crowns in spring🤭) And they grew so well and multiplied naturally themselves, plus I could also cut some of the larger rhizomes smaller if I want to. The original one had ''3 eyes'' So I m expecting to be able to add to the stock through propagation, once I get the planting space correct 💚

    Oh , I love roses . But I don’t think I’d be adding more of them in to my garden. They are very high maintenance . They don’t like strong winds and heavy rains that we have in Ireland . Not mentioning that they always try to make me bleed 😭 deadheading , removing alphids , tying them , pruning them , trying to figure out what’s wrong with them 🤪too much work 🙈I have 4 of them and I started to treat them with anti fungal treatment this year . Also I was feeding them or regular bases and I must say it did make a huge difference . I would never touch chemicals before. Only organic approach. but my mum send me some chemicals and insisted that I try . I could see huge difference in about a week . My roses were on steroids 😅 I’ll keep using those fertilisers and treatments . As my roses never so lush for their entire life but no more roses for me ❤❤❤ by the way I used Bordeaux mixture Аюand kristalon

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses Месяц назад

      Hi 😀 I understand the conflicting feelings you can have about the roses, you love them but they are a lot of work 😊 I used to use all types of chemicals and rose specific fertilizers, sprays etc before I had the vegetable garden. Never though anything of it, until the hedges around the rose garden started to grow bigger and bluetits started to nest in there. Then I noticed bluetits hopping from plant to plant, looking for aphids, which I had killed with pesticides.... then I noticed the ladybirds had disappeared...and from there on I haven't sprayed anymore... But this has also taught me to accept that the only way the fancy rose displays are possible, is through the use of chemical sprays. So I've stopped stressing about it and also I will not buy another rose through a catalogue, without seeing the bloom size and shape. One of the new roses blossom is quite small, so the deadheading will be a pain. I'm even considering to get rid of them 🙊

      Thank you, Linda 🤗💚🌿 The snow makes everything look so clean and tidy 😂 But it is great to see an overview of the seasonal changes, its so easy to forget how it looked, it still takes me by surprise. Have a great weekend, too! 🤗🥰

    Always lovely to see your garden through the year. Nearly time for oca! It's been a tough year - but yes, your year has been successful! It's time to start planning now... ❤ (Glad to hear I'm not the only one who hasn't got their garlic in yet!)

      Nearly there for Oca and Mashua 😀 I hope Yakon didn't get damaged in the big freeze we got as I never dug it out...the stems of the plant are really mushy now 🙈🙈🙈 The other aspects of life are too busy at the moment to plan for garden, but in January I usually get myself organised again 😀 Also we don't have any ''seed catalogues'' to get me tempted 😂 I've just watched your plot moving video and am so envious of all of the extra muscle you have ''incorporated'' to these big jobs 🥰 ...... and you just walk around drinking tea lol 😂😂

    You have achieved a lot. I am impressed y the structure you have put into every garden room. That is pretty amazing. Re roses, look for the most disease resistant roses you can find. Also prune a lot for better air circulation. My roses gave me so much joy this fall - I’m sorry you had such a hard time with the,. Now that your structure is in, you can enjoy just the planting and harvesting next season!

      Thank you so much 😊💚🌿Yes, the air circulation will be hugely beneficial for the blackspot, I also had rose slugs terrorising the plants, but in one of the comments in an earlier video I got recommended to spray the plants in spring (I have to look up what the natural spray name was...) I love roses and wouldn't want the garden to be without them 🥰 Have a great weekend and best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿

      @@spudsandroses I use insecticidinal soap. I don’t know what all it helps with but it helps with Japanese beetles and I’m told it’s safe for other critters. Not sure how.

    What a beautiful garden you have! I live in Illinois USA on the open prairie. It was a very hot summer with a lot of wind and very little rain. Despite that there were lots of plants that did well. I got plenty to eat out of my vegetable garden. Salvia did really well for me and I grew probably twenty different varieties of it. Plus the hummingbirds adore it. Really enjoyed the tour of your lovely garden and looking forward to the next one!

      Hello to Illinois 😊💚🌿 Its great to hear, your garden did really well, despite of the lack of rain. I love Salvias, I might only have 3 or 4 different varieties 😂 but they are such a beautiful plant and the pollinators love them, too 🐝🐞 Thank you so much for your kind comment and best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿

    Thanks for the tour, nice to see. Lots of colour in the summer. I saw another colour on your Instagram story today! 🌨We've had a tiny sprinkle of snow and I was clearing my last pots today and had problems getting the stakes out as they were frozen.❄

      All that snow fell over 2-to-3 hours. Our small local road was unpassable because of the hilly drive, a lot of chaos on the main roads as the snowploughs had no time to respond. Snow tyres are not mandatory for cars. So we ended up staying at home all together, no school, no work 🙂 It was quite surreal to wake up to all that snow....and it will be a distant memory by Saturday as the temps are going up to 10C again, storm Bert is arriving and loads of rain 🙄

    Hi Maiju, nice to see through the seasons, you have had a lot of different colours in the kitchen garden this year from all the flowers from the veg, sweet peas, the border and guilds. This may be why the kitchen garden has drawn you this year and sitting on the step must have been a lovely place to relax.

    Hi Maiju, our chickens are exactly the same, they always go where they are not meant to and destroy all the pathways that I have woodchipped!! It must have been heart breaking cutting back that clemetis but sometimes these things just need to be done don't they. Your garden is looking fab. Lovely update, take care 😊

      Thank you, Bethan 🥰 The chickens are fab characters 😊 but yes, can get destructive if not reined in 😀 I just need to find a new location for the clematis, it would be pity to dump it 💚🌿
