What do you think about clubbing in Berlin? What are your experiences?
I'm thinking about clubbing in Berlin some time soon but never did it. I'm 44 already and recently single after being married for 9 years. In my younger days I did plenty of clubbing in Amsterdam where I'm from but that's a lot more casual by the sound of it, like no dress codes or things like that. So any tips for an older dude to get started? And at least in Amsterdam its very easy to "buy certain things to make the evening more interesting" if you know what I mean... How would that work in Berlin?
@ageoflove1980 @ageoflove1980 in my experience Amsterdam partying is also fun, but different from Berlin. Indeed, it's harder to get into a club in Berlin. Dress codes depend on the kind of party, but dressing a bit "sexy" while staying yourself is the go-to here. But it's easier to get inside alone, definitely not with a group of men. Also better to go very late in the morning, or for Berghain, like was mentioned, going Sunday around noon.
@@TheMovementHub OK cheers sounds good.
@@ageoflove1980 Tresor is also a really good club.
@@TheMovementHub OK as long as its sort of casual to begin with. I doubt I'll feel comfortable in a kink outfit
Berliner here. Very good video, the only thing that I‘d tell people who visit Berlin: don’t feel pressured that you „must“ go partying. If you go, you must not take more drugs than the guys in front of you, just chill. The fomo is usually pretty big and this is where frustration comes into play as lots of tourists stand in line and get rejected. Just go there as you like, don‘t plan too much in advance but be aware that each club is individual.
💯💯💯
People forget that Berlin has a lot more to offer than just the clubs!! Its history makes it extremely special and virtually anything "Berlin" is just different. The football culture is very special for example, the food scene is vibrant and interesting as well! The techno scene in Berlin, and more broadly the electronic music scene, is actually an integral part of the local culture!
Oh yeah went a couple of years ago with the wife and son and had a great time and didn't see a single club. I thought the former Soviet architecture was really interesting. And loved the big park with the Royal palaces at Sanssouci in Potsdam. There is just so much history and yeah some of it very dark and serious. Not only WWII and Communism, but also the story of Christiane F. for example. And traveling doesn't always have be "fun", some experiences are more about learning and showing respect.
@@ageoflove1980 you said it man! I wish to go to Potsdam next time I go!
Yes. You hate it or you love it. I hate it! You love it 😂
Every city has a history😂
@@dickens123 Every city has a DIFFERENT history.
Most important what was being said was that club culture changed after covid.
The club scene was much more open and living the moment some claim it has to do with the shift of Techno becoming part of mainstream culture. You can put a sticker on your phones camera but you cant protect the setting from a certain mindset (not even a bouncer). Today its more influenced by ideals and expectations perpatuated by videos like this consequently leading to redundant stereotypes even if the stereotype embraces openness and pluralism.
One can say that similarly to the demise of folk culture when theyve reached a status of political representation so in Berlin techno culture - it became a commodity/souvenir.
The consumption of much heavier drugs also plays a crucial role leading to a loss of sense for the collective and making conversation impossible or at least very boring. Regularly people pass out on the dancefloor.
Berlin as a capital for its club culture has long lost its place to other center like Georgia or Ukraine with new ones popping up around the world frequently. Ironically due to the medialization of Berlin as an Ideal and the subsequent creation of new “underground” subcultures with different multicultural backgrounds.
Regarding Berlin as a center for personal freedom it has to be said that its biggest treasure is ultimately leading to its demise by the steady influx of global citizens and mass tourism subsequently leading to the dramtic increase of living costs which disperses native people to the city border and steralizing the city with those that can afford living in it. Ergo priviledged people making Berlins claim of being pluralistic, open and multicultural rather paradoxically since those who live out their personal freedom are those who can afford it (mostly coming from a similar social background).
All in all one can say Berlin is not that special. But it was the first city from which a certain hedonistic and liberterian mode of living in the context of club culture spread. In regards with LGBTQI aswell as the creative communities preferance to live in Berlin I can personally say that the same people that chose Berlin for its openness are now considering moving to more rural settings away from the city seeking annonymity and economic independece rather than spectacle and a fashion of living. Interestingly this is due to Covid and the newly found possibility of the moveability of the workplace making it possible to live independent from an urban center.
Thank God you said "live in the moment", such a relief to just hear it. That kind of memory lives with you always.
Very qualitative video, you found the right people to describe the scene and experience
Thank you :). I'm glad to hear you liked it
The mexican/spanish couple described more the pre-COVID era. Sadly Musa 8:45 is so right. It has changed a lot since corona :( The music is harder, the drugs are harder, the vibe is harder.. Prices have doubled, which destroyed the balance of "regular" guests and tourists because Berlin residents don't go out as often as before, a lot of "old" folks stopped to go at all, the next generation is more selfish and self-centered.
Any idea why it changed that much?
@@mthxjzz6462 keep the world inside for a year and people go crazy and disconnect from their societies and communities. this is does not just go for clubbing ofc
I actually agree with this, I’ve been going to Berlin for years for parties and visit friends, I went last October for the first time since covid and noticed the vibe was different and like you said harder and not in a good way. Even Berghain which I’ve been too many times was different, the atmosphere was more aggressive than before. The best times of my life was spent Sunday afternoon in Panaroma bar but last time it was different! Anyway I go back next week so we’ll give it another go
Just watched small documentary about dying british pubs culture so similiar situation, basicly people go out less because prices high and social media makes us lazy, also covid showed us way to spend time at home
I'm so happy that I'm older now. I used to go to "Maria am Ostbahnhof", "Berghain" in the first years then "Bar 25", the old locations of the KitKat. Later to "Kater Holzig" and "About Blank" and "b70" and other small clubs. These were the great days. It was much more open, less look-at-me, more cordial. I really met great people. It was also less international, but in a good way. Today people just come from everywhere so people have seen everything and are interested in nothing.
I just been to the Sächsische Schweiz yesterday on the weekend and we had amazing hikes with a friend from New York and enjoyed the very special nature. This is 10000000x nicer than the Berghain now.
Especially when comparing hiking to Berghain: maybe getting older and more sober/healthy lifestyle adds a significant bias when comparing now to back in the days… how can we know how big of a role this plays?
But i agree with the 'look-at-me' thing… although this already existed in the earlier decades, but it was always only a few people who looked & behaved like this and for me it was just adding to the mix of a crowd.
I was on BH floor just yesterday (first time after 10 years)! And it was so fucking good, raving madness like a zoo gone wild… idk how many 0s i would add but definitely X times nicer than Sächsische Schweiz ;)
loved this video, taught me a lot about berlin party culture !

🥰
Personally found Berlin clubbing vibes really fun & welcoming, went to VOID for NYE and everyone was just loving it! There wasn't a dress code either like I've heard for other places, which is great. Would highly recommend!
Great informative video.
Although I’ve heard you can stay in queues for hours to get into other clubs like Berghain and that does not appeal to me at all
❤️❤️ Thanks for the information and your appreciation. Glad you had fun in Berlin.
Humans definitely used to have bigger brains.
And souls.
Berlin is a hedonist mecca that gets dirtier and nastier each year.
Neanderthals had. In Germany.
I don't know. I lived in Berlin 8 years, been to all major clubs there and a huge fan of live music, DJs, theres nothing like the club experience there for sure. Just the sheer sound systems, the lighting, and architectural spaces made for these gatherings..some feel like you're on some underground submarine in space.
Overall, the night life is a very novel thing to a newcomer, nothing like it , I would say. However, like anything, believe it or not, it can get old. I met local Beliners, by the time they're like 19-20, have seen it all, looking 10 years past their age, becoming young and jaded quickly.
The last time I went to Berghain, it felt really..hmm let's say.. inauthentic and over branded. There is so much hype around it, I guess it's no surprise. To get in there everyone is told to wear black, dont talk too much, blah blah...but as I looked around, everyone was basically wearing the same style of black clothing Matrix Euro trashy costume...I mean no variation either...it just looked so cookie cutter and plastic..I'm sure it wasn't like that years ago, but i guess the same thing happens anywhere that gets too big and too famous, and yes, funded by the government.
But there are other great clubs, and always a great time in Berlin, if you don't stay too long 😂.
good video deserves more views
🥰 Thank you
cool point of view
Berlin has the best party and club scene no doubt! Much love from berlin see you on the dance floor

I'm currently in Berlin for a few weeks after having visited a couple of times for shorter lengths prior. With Saturday night and Sunday morning, that now makes a total of 4 'heute nicht' or not today/tonight on getting into Berghain. Frustrating, but I'll keep trying. And yes, I've done all of the things - dress in predominantly black (maybe I need more leather haha), be chill in line, answer in German (when I can..the last two times then didn't even ask anything and just waved me and others directly through), and know some of the DJ's playing that night. I'm a big fan of techno and even produce it myself (shoutout Ableton Live...a company in Berlin) and I just really want to experience what is rumored to be one of the best systems in the world for techno.
Tresor is always a good time. After not getting into Berghain on Saturday, I needed to warm up after standing out in the cold for 2h15m and went there. Classic techno bunker vibes with a great sound system. Sisyphos is cool (when it's warm). Went to Kit Kat on a Sunday after not getting into Berghain and it was somewhat surprisingly...dead. Smoked a joint around the pool and just kind of hung out with the other dozen or so people doing the same. No dancing to be had at all.
Assuming they let me in, I'm going to try RSO next weekend.
That sounds tough. I wish you the best of luck with your next attempts. Hope you will have a great time.
I've been visiting Berlin since I was 6 and I'm living here for about a decade now, and I still find that Berlin clubbing hype stupid. All these people seem somewhat brainwashed to me. I used to go to parties, but as soon as I've seen clubs in Berlin, I've stopped, because the people here are behaving like cult members and it's annoying to watch and experience. IMHO music and clubs in Berlin are boring and bland. It's almost sad, because these clubs could do so much better and become so much more unique, but they choose to follow the hype and cult of drug addicts who under the influence view these places as their temples. Also the dress code is so boring. All these clubbing peeps look the same!
yep it's all superficial and gets boring pretty quickly.
thanks finally someone who understands
I'm with you. All the same, totally boring.
yes! you said it. lived there 8 years. The scene has become so uniform.
I've been to many techno clubs in Madrid and there was no need to dress up posh in heels at the underground clubs. She went somewhere different. In fact the Spanish scene before covid was a lot more approachable than some of the vibes in Berlin but I was living in Madrid so was a local.
Berlin is like a huge colorful bucket filled with everything. And very green aswell. A unique place. ❤

Great video and many facts especially from the mexican and spanish couple. ”People not there to show off” is not true though, that is the exact reason why I dont enjoy Berghain. Too much stupid looks from the people who just visit berlin for the weekend, in the queue and inside. If your local you know what I mean
In switzerland we have this Checks for drugs in front of the Party already for over 30 years...and its for free, and they tell you really fast whats inside your stuff. So this things exist already for a long time , aswell in Germany ....so this not new at all. Peace and Kisses from Berne

Great video!! I´m going back to Berlin, to visit the city for the second time, I am from México City and wanted to go to a techno club, since I am a big fan of techno and metal music. I was wondering if someone has an advice for a 27 year old mexican girl that wants to hear good music and dance! Is it safe to go alone? Do I need to be extra aware? Any advice is welcome. Thank you!
I would say the techno scene in Berlin is pretty safe and consensual. But be careful with taking drinks from strangers (there might be something inside that you wouldn't expect), and also watch your own drink carefully.
This reminds me a little of Studio 54 in New York city except the music is Disco and not techno.
I miss kitkat club. On my last day in berlin, i visited kitkat. What i saw inside i never saw in my life. I also ate a esctacy pill inside and danced like a maniac.Nightclubs in germany are on another level.
Berlin Club Szene is and was like NYC in the 70s 80s

Goodmorning Party Peeps...Damn i remember those days and vibe early 90's in the clubs and underground party's in the Netherlands,Belgie,Germany and it was awesome. About sex in tha club, yep we where saying to each other if some in the group have AIDS well........... and about drugs we were eating them like smarties . Now 56 years old and still alive and i say it one more time it was focking awesome. Have a nice day. 😎
For future interviews, it might be enriching to include seasoned ravers who have deep roots in the scene. This could provide a more authentic perspective on the culture of techno and raves. It seems that these individuals might not be fully familiar with the scene, even within their own country.
Ive visited berlin twice with my boyfriend..we are open minded but come from a small town in Scotland with 1 club that could fit about 300 people inside. We experienced a total culture shock in berline. We went to a gay bar, berkenkammer something. I was using the urinal and felt soemone squeeze my bum. Expecting it to be my boyfriend i turned round to find an older german guy wearing leather with a grin on his face. The scotsman came out in me and i got rather angry, he didnt look at me for the rest of the night
Thank you for sharing your experience. Berlin can be very extreme when it comes to partying, even compared to other big cities. I can imagine that if you come from a smaller town, then the shock is even amplified.
just fo to security or awareness team members and they will help you
I'm glad that Mexican said he's from Mexico City because my man, we ain't the same.
Oh god yeah. I could imagine that influencers and such treating a club almost like a zoo would ruin the entire scene.
This kind of scene in Berlin was also common before the influencer era.
Berghain and what it symbolizes is, in fact, more or less pretentious nonsense. And yes, I've been there more than once as I used to live in Berlin. This isn't "clubbing" - an electronic soundtrack to your night doesn't make it clubbing. Berghain is a lot of individuals who desperately want to say they've been to Berghain. When just getting inside is apparently some kind of big deal due to the Security, how is that remotely connected to the foundations of Techno and what it represents? It's not at all. Berghain is attempting to be some sort of wild art instillation where everything is permissible and personal freedom is paramount, but in truth, it's really just a bunch of pretentious wannabees - the majority of them tourists or people from other countries living in Berlin, doing a lot of drugs while listening to techno so they can talk on social media about having done this in "Berghain" and in their mind feel special or elite...there are countless better environments than the most overhyped building in Germany to take drugs and listen to techno. The Mexican dude sums up the vibe quite well, but he's wrong when he says he's noticed the atmosphere has changed due to harder drugs - the drugs are the same, but the atmosphere has changed due to people being pissed off at their experience...all that hype and expectation and queuing forever only to get inside and realize it's not that special at all.
Thank you for taking the time and giving your perspective. Indeed, many people nowadays advice going to other clubs than Berghain. Friday and Saturday is indeed Touri night. On Sundays one can find more locals though.
@@TheMovementHub You're welcome. And I know this information about Sundays. But the vast majority of people don't want to attend a club on a Sunday because if they're taking any substances, they're going to feel like shit on Monday morning and possibly the first 2-3 days of the week. The door policy is a joke - turning people away who have bought tickets and possibly traveled from another country to get to Berlin to experience that? There is NO defending that policy. And the Security become these almost celebrity-types or Gods?😆When you really think about it, you understand why so many people now think of Berghain as being almost anti-techno. This is so far removed from techno's origins and the spirit of the movement that grew out of techno in Detroit/Berlin/Rotterdam that it's impossible to ignore it. This is basically Reality TV/Celebrity techno.
I agree with you
Thank you for saying that @@TheMovementHub.❤But I'm not special in thinking this. Many people across Europe feel like this. I was at a club in Cologne last year that made Berghain look boring and pretentious. There's a club in Bogota called Hard Kapital that makes Berghain look like a children's Disney movie - hard techno, the best cocaine you're ever likely to experience, and Colombian after-parties so crazy that they become core life memories.☠ Berghain is a product of hype - it's been marketed very well...like a myth. But in truth it's just lots of people doing drugs in a room while listening to techno. You can stay at home and do that every weekend with your friends, and without all the pretentious bullshit from security who believe they are celebrities. Love, Respect, Techno. Say NO to fake people.💚

I've been to a club in Bogota called Hard Kapital with Colombian friends - I had only known them for a couple of days the night we went, but after a chat about what music we liked, they wanted me to experience this with them. This happened in 2017, but it was such a good night that I still remember it vividly.
