Not the mushy peas.

Well it's all battered so of course it would be the same colour, it has the same outer layer.

A Jaffa cake is a cake because it goes hard when left out in the air, a biscuit goes soft, when left in the air.
With the original recipe, it would have been classified as a biscuit because it went soft. However since there was an element of chocolate it would be considered a chocolate biscuit, which is a luxury item and would be subject to tax. In Scottish chip shops you will usually have to fish options battered or special. Special is breaded fish.battered sausage tends to be a normal sausage in better. The plain one is usually a smoked sausage and not a normal sausage. Also in Scottish chip shops you usually have battered hamburgers, battered ribsteak, battered Black pudding or haggis, battered and fried pizza, known as a Pizza crunch and deep fried pizza come to glasgow and try them all.
What, no batterd, deep-fried Mars Bars?
Eating something that’s been wrapped up and in a bag for awhile is definitely different than eating it just cooked! Fish and chips is one of those foods that needs to be eaten freshly fried!

See I'm not sure he's actually allergic I think he's actually just intolerant like lactose intolerant for potatoes because he said when he explained what happened when he ate potatoes was that he just got a really bad stomach ache like people who are lactose intolerant do when they have milk or dairy a lot of people confuse intolerance for allergies I'm not sure if he actually went to the doctor and actually got it confirmed that is allergic to potatoes or not but I feel like he's actually intolerant just means his body has a hard time breaking down the starch from the potatoes which is why you get stomach pains. Allergies usually stem from the fact that his body Rejects the potatoes completely which means he could get hives and his throat could close up. So I'm not sure but that's what I am really thinking. I don't think he's allergic just intolerant.

To see Luke go from this to enjoying food in Korea with the rappers is so delightful ❤
Yes, we do actually eat fish and chips
The problem with Fish and Chips is the quality varies so wildly. Some places you can go (that people even recommend), and it's just a greasy mess of nothing that will get you on the toilet within minutes of eating it as it just slides it's way straight back out again from all the grease. Whereas sometimes it's just absolutely perfect and hits the spot. Sadly most of the time it's just a greasy mess.
Thats why we all have our chippy that we go to, you find a good one and stick with it
It's very particular to the kind of person you are
@@theshiftybloke4672 wtf is that even supposed to mean
@@aquasmoke8539 if you're Northern, greasy shit with gravy is the go to, if you're a bit Midlands, a bit of a "Dry chip".. its all dependant on region
A lot of that has to do with the oil they use, and how often they change it. I had to give up on one chippie after they started using a different oil which didn't agree with me at all.
Ollie : Is this all British fish by the way?
Luke : I don't know I didn't fish it
*Ollie has found his match guys*
Love your videos, Love seeing Luke at the table eating with you.
I'm Canadian, and living in Victoria BC, and one of my fave chippies makes this deep fried European style dog wrapped in bacon and deep fried. It's called a "galley dog". There's a lot of "English style" chippies here, but only 3 that do proper thick chips. A chip butty with curry sauce is amazing.
Wait.... Ollie's eating chips... Isn't he allergic to potatoes? *squints in confusion* If he is... Whelp, I'd say he's really dedicated to his job!
It's a sacrifice he's willing to make
And he ate a pickled onion all in one too
Knowing you're allergic to something doesn't mean you don't think it's delicious though.
Its more like he can't tolerate potato, not allergic to potato, as his stomach dies afterwards 🤣
Being "allergic" to something doesn't always mean an anaphylactic shock will occur when consumed. There's different degrees of allergic reaction. For Ollie I believe it is a stomach reaction with symptoms of upset stomach & loose/diarrhea stool perhaps.
"my heart rate is elevated just by looking at this" - Ollie Kendall
My go to order here in NZ is chips, battered mussels, battered scollops and maybe a piece of battered fish. seasoned with salt & lemon pepper.
Also can never go wrong with a chip buttie..cheap white bread, a health spread of butter, some hot chips and a small amount of ketchup.
I think this is the first time I realized that the fish and chips had vinegar (I knew they had salt). I guess when I've eaten them I've just had maybe one or two chips and thought I didn't like the soggy texture. I never realized they were possibly soaked in vinegar. I love vinegar and salt potato chips. So very very different. Loved the content. LOVED seeing Luke in the studio. He's a good middle man.
"that's such a bad description of something so nice"
literally me everytime ollie says some mind-boggling analogies
This video is just 12 minutes and 14 seconds of Josh and Ollie shaming their friend for liking fish and chips😂😂😂
Well, I think a lot of it is that he seems to have little sense of taste (and I do mean that more literally than usual, I imagine his sense of taste is below average most likely). Liking fish and chips is fine, but the guy really likes having tons of salt and grease. Those are two qualities often associated with something being on the 'crappy' end of the spectrum.
I mean, I wonder if he's even met a proper non-breakfast type of sausage? I see where Josh was coming from with the sausage looking like a breakfast sausage (albeit a bit outsize). It just seems to have an even and bland appearance inside it.
Also, for all that he's supposed to be the expert in fish and chips (which I guess he is, compared to Josh and Ollie who rarely get it), he did say he only gets it a couple times a month or thereabouts. They did play him being an 'expert' a bit silly, so I'm sure they were aware he isn't close to being an expert though.
Not trying to crap on the dood mind, he can like what he likes of course. But I would just say that he's probably not someone to consult when you want to know a good place for fish and chips.

I was born and raised in Sweden but I lived in the UK for about 4 years in Wallasey just south of Liverpool and when ever I had chips in our local chippy I would always have to say No vinegar even though I was sort of a regular customer they always gave me this look of confusion and sometimes even of disappointment 😂 I never got the whole thing that the Brits had with vinegar. That being said I do miss the curry sauce they had. Never come across anything similar in Sweden. Luke reminds me of a friend I had from elementary thru high school, who ate every day- without fail- his packed lunch of a baloney and mustard sandwich on white bread with the crust cut off. By the time we were in college he had never eaten in his entire life basic produce like tomato, cucumber, peach, etc. And when we would go out he'd refuse to eat anything but pizza or basic fried foods.

"I've no idea what rockfish is.It's rock hard." 😂
It's supposed to be sea perch but often they sell different types of shark as "rock" which is why sometimes it smells faintly of ammonia.
It's eel
In California, they refer to rockfish as rock cod as well and consists of multiple species that live near rocks or in/around kelp beds. On the East Coast, striped bass (or stripers) are called "rockfish." I wonder what rockfish really is in the UK.
It’s a generic term for whatever cheap fish is available.

The sogginess isn't from already added vinegar, it's all the steam from inside the hot chips. You basically can't ever get wrapped chips home from a chippy without them going soggy unless you get them double fried, or maybe try airing them out/cooling them a bit before they're wrapped.
Try ordering chips fresh and then just watching the steam or holding a paper towel over them. They evacuate a crazy amount of moisture. If they're open to the air it can escape and they become crispier but obviously trapped in a bag they just make everything around them soggy.
Did we just find someone who is on par with ollie's humour bcs i cracked listening to luke talking😂😂😂
😂😂same!
In my area closed you get more. They will serve the open one in a little plastic pallet. The closed they just wrap up as many chips as they can!
It all depends on the fish and chip shop you go too. Coastal fish and chip shops are amazing
I feel like fish and chips is a food that really must be done right. Very similar to fried chicken and fries (I'm very picky about fries). When they're done well, they're amazing, but when they're done badly, there's no redeeming them
Absolutely. Fish and chips from places nearer the sea, where the fish is fresher etc is lovely. Fish and chips in towns/cities further inland is very hit n miss. If they use frozen fish and precut chips it's just ... disappointing.
That is the same for all food. If they are done well, they are delicious. If they are done badly, nothing tastes good.
@@cancanjaker1620 You can have a meciocre lasagna or burger or pulled pork. With fish and chips there is only good or bad is the point
@@vinhbui1858 not really. There are also mediocre fish and chips. Most fish and chips are mediocre really.
Yeah agree, a very good fish and chips done well is great, but hard to come by.
The chips shouldn’t be soggy, they should be crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, preferably fried in beef dripping and covered in onion vinegar (I.e. the vinegar that comes out of the pickled onion jars) and good quality salt.
Also a chip butty can be great (if a little plain but that’s where the onion vinegar comes in) in a freshly baked flakey crusty roll that’s soft and fluffy in the middle and has tonnes of butter on it (weirdly the butter doesn’t have to be good quality though! But maybe that’s a nostalgia thing for me.
The most alarming hit is how did they end up not getting a bunch of gherkins if they ordered the entire menu!
And they could’ve had a couple of pies as well. Occasionally you can get a pretty decent cheese and onion pasty in a fish and chip shop too.
But yeah fish and chip shop fried chicken is literally the worst
I'm actually really intrigued by this kinds of food. You know, the kinda shitty, not that good in quality, definitely unhealthy regional food that only the locals eat. And everyone knows it's not really that good but you just kinda eat it from time to time. Every country has that, and I find that pretty funny.
This is exactly it. You nailed it.
(Actually, the interesting thing is that depending on where you get fish and chips from, it can be very different. Fish and chips from a good gastropub can be REALLY good.)
What is your country's food like that? I'm Aussie so it's also fish and chips...and I don't really like it much either 😅
This is good, tasty food though
Honestly the best fish (that is not self caught) you will ever have will be freshly caught cheap deep fried white line fish from a good fish and chips take away at a seashore near a fish market. Properly done the fish meat is still moist, none of the oil gets into the fish meat and cooked fast preserving the natural flavour. Fancy restaurants the fish has been in a fridge for at least a day or more, it looses firmness and gets the "fishy" flavour that is covered a boatload of butter and sauce.
But good Fish & Chips is genuinely so good. I'm so lucky to live near an amazing Chippy. But I've gone years living near mediocre ones and didn't bother ordering.
It's his laugh that's had me binge watching their videos and being that's its my birthday I've had a great day

Wow it looks like something we have in Belgium. But less fish, more other kinds of meat. We call it 'frituur' in Dutch, not sure what it is in English. Literally translated it is 'frying pan'. It is a place where you can buy chips or french fries with different kinds of snacks.
Tbh Belgian fries are the REAL DEAL. They're the absolute best I've ever tried. And the insane variety of high quality sauces to go with... Y'all really know how it's done! 👏🏼
Ollie: allergic to potatoes.
Also Ollie: snarfing chips
Me: yelling, "OLLIE! STOP!! You'll make yourself sick again!"
Northeast we eat mainly Haddock. Never eaten cod from a chippy . Got to have a side of peas or gravy/curry
Maybe you're not old enough to remember. I grew up in Hull and every chippy used to have both Haddock and Cod on the menu...and sometimes Plaice and Halibut. That was when there was a 400+ trawler fleet working out of Hull and Grimsby. When the fishing industry all went to pot in the late 70s/early 80s...the ONLY fish that was actually on the menu was Haddock...and sometimes they'd have Cod to order. That's changed a bit more in recent years with more having cod again...but that was a divide for a long time...haddock up north and southerners still got the cod.
@@vallejomach6721 Yeh Grimsby boy here, born late 70s. I’ve never eaten cod except in bought fishcakes. I can’t even remember seeing it on many menus to be honest .
Luke really is the essential british flavor representative.
