My favorite thing about that curved heel design is that it’s meant to actually correctly distribute the weight of your body over the foot healthily-a lot of modern heels have the heel right under the very back end of the heel, not centered under it, so rather than the weight being actually centered under the fleshy part of your heel that is used to taking and cushioning weight, all of your weight is shifted back and pinpointed in that one spot, basically just on the back of the bone. And that’s why modern heels hurt so damn much!
I wrote exactly the same thing in my comment too. The reason why arches were so curved back then was to give arch support, which is perfect for those with flat feet, that we don't get now with modern shoes. Modern shoes are the bastard child.
2 reasons: a) because fellas like me who have just fallen in love (I have no idea how she was in my suggested videos this morning) with this wonderful woman will get called simp or creep or weirdo, and 2) she looks good in anything from the last 300years and I can't say that without seeming like some kind of simp or creep or weirdo. *sigh* I need an immortal polish girl in my life

I am a large, burly, bearded man. My style consists of jeans and flannel in winter; cargo shorts and Hawaiian shirts in the summer. But I'll be DAMNED if I don't appreciate a good curved pump with those absolutely adorable ruffled wings.
My grandfather was a shoemaker during this time. My father still has one of his old advertisements and the shoes were so beautiful. My dad explained the customer would chose the shoe from the catalog then my grandfather would make that to fit their foot.

As a former pedorthist who used to teach shoe construction - the first two drool-worthy shoes are made with a curved shank, and the top line is curved in more than most shoes are today. Making the heel like this is a giant pain in the ass, but it means that, if the heel counter hits your foot correctly, the heel will not slip, which is virtually impossible to achieve with heels unless they have a strap or are too small for the foot. Also, if the curve of the shank lines up correctly, which it looks like it was designed for that, the shoe will actually support the arch, which is rare in heels, because when you raise the heel, a person's arch height generally gets higher. Finally, the angle of the heel is underslung. If the balance is wrong, it could break when a person steps off a curb, but if the designer got it just right, then the wearer won't feet a jolt of impact when her foot hits the ground, and there will be less slapping from the heel to the ball, making it reasonably easy to walk in, even though the heel looks fairly high (I'd guess about 8 cm).
I haven't sold shoes in a bit over a year, and I used to work in a very orthopedic shoes store, so I'm not up to date on dress shoes, but there's an Italian factory called Brunate that makes house labled shoes for other brands that comes close.
I'm a pro tango dancer & occasional salsa dancer, and if you're willing to pay, you can get anything cut to order with heel choice out of Argentina or Italy. The split shank makes a world of difference. You couldn't pay me to wear molded mall crap anymore. There's an Italian company I LOVE called Madame Pivot, they started making street shoes during covid.
Nina Vinterová THIS!!!! I never understood why people love the 20s so much. I really don’t like the short hair with finger waves basically plastered to the head, the straight rectangular silhouette, etc. I mean, some things were cool, but I really prefer the 10s and 30s compared to the 20s.
Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette agree so, so much! The 20s are the least flattering decade. At least Regency had an empire waist that accentuated your boobs. The 20s was just shapeless sacks all around. I really don’t get the attraction. It looks okay (but only okay) on very very slim, tall women without much in the way of boobs and hips. Anyone else though? Ugh. My personal favourite era to wear is 1890 to 1910. I don’t go in for the massive leg of mutton sleeves (though a bit of poof is nice), but everything else I adore. And it’s flattering. And comfortable. If it gets cold, add another pair of stockings and some more petticoats. If it’s warm, wear linen or cotton. And it’s not so far out that you get stared at if you wear the fashion out and about. I do love the crinoline and bustle eras, but they would get stared at, and they don’t really work well with a wheelchair. I do like pulling bits of inspiration from them though, as well as a whole bunch of other eras. But my base era that I wear out of the house is Belle Époque and Edwardian. Never 20s.
Neartmhor Thank youuuu I wasn’t sure anyone would agree with me! The 20s really do only work with one body type. If I tried to wear something from the twenties, I would look like I was wearing a potato sack. And if I tried to define my waist, it would be inaccurate. The Victorian and Edwardian periods, along with the time periods before them, were great because even if you didn’t have the right body type you could fix that with padding and all of that. I also love the 1890s and 1900s clothes! They really are flattering on anyone. I’m sure you look amazing in those clothes ❤️
The round toes, the flexible curves, the well-centred heel... it just makes sense! If I see one more picture of a v-shaped dangerous stiletto heel that doesn’t do anything for your body except for hurting it, I’m gonna lose it
I know right! Pointed shoes are rarely, if ever, attractive. They elongate one’s foot into the oddest shape. But rounded shoes compliment a foot’s natural shape while making it appear smaller and more dainty. As for heels, I do not mind it when they are thin/long, but “chunky” heels can come in such beautiful shapes and are far more comfortable and sturdy.
@@akatie888 oh I love stilettos and almost always wear heels! But I really dislike the pointed toe. I don’t think they look as good but they also don’t feel as good. If I wear them, I’ll have to go up in size so that my toes can actually fit instead of being all scrunched up and in pain.

There is none, because modern fashion makes absolutely no sense. No one talks about 30s fashion at all, sadly overshadowed by the 20s.
To be fair, the 1930s channeled all of their fashionness into accessories like hats and shoes and we don't really care about those very much anymore. Also, everyone assumes that once the stock market crashed that suddenly everybody was dirt poor and nobody had fun or parties or bought anything any more, so OBVIOUSLY fashion that decade was completely dead.
And the saddest thing is that the ''20s fashion'' which is popular isn't even realistic, it is a largely phoney, distorted, and _caricaturesque flapper_ version of it...

Simply because they needed to actually walk in those shoes so they were ENGINEERED (may seem easy but look into it building a comfortable shoe it's a work of art)
BTW, Gucci did a 1930s inspired pump in mid 2019 (IDK whether it was spring or fall collection) but it was called "Ortensia" and was black satin with a curved heel and rounded toe, they almost looked like 1930s does 1760s to me. Black satin with moss green satin looking interior and of course gold double G buckles.
@@MichieHoward I think round toes are hideous and look like mid 2000s like 2006-2008 era shoes. If you arent dressing in full 1930s schick rounded toes will look stupid. They aren't actually as flattering on the foot as Karolina suggests, try wearing a rounded toe shoe with elegant cigarette pants or trousers, you are gonna look like a bumpkin.
@@caligulalonghbottom2629 Actually, from my personal experience with both pointed and rounded tipped shoes, I can assure you that rounded looks FAR BETTER. The pointed ones just make people look like a wicked witch. Also, the rounded ones are a lot more comfortable to wear than the pointed ones, since the rounded tip follows the natural shape of your toes a lot more closely than the pointed ones. Btw, I wear a modern style of clothing, just in case you were wondering if I'm prancing around in 1930's gear.

Omg do you remember when there was this cheap chain store called Centro in Poland and they had some nastiest shoes? I remember being in a hurry a day before my friend's sister's wedding, frantically looking for shoes that looked pretty and would be somewhat comfortable and easy on my high-school student budget. And i found them in this cheap ass store, for 35PLN, they had the exact pretty 30's curves, a bow, made in black velvet, the heel height was **just right**. I wore the hell out of them for years. Best purchase ever, I regret so much I cannot have them back. I could not find a shoe like that anyqhere else :( I have photo of me dancing in these shoes and I never liked looking at my feet as much as on this photograph lol.
We also had Centro in Ukraine and I bought my graduation party shoes there last minute for a ridiculous price. They turned out to be the most comfortable and good-looking heels I had in my life lol! I danced the whole night wearing them for the first time and my feet weren't damaged :D
Oh my gosh, Centro was my bane of existence! The shoes were super cheap, but every. single. pair. hurt my feet and they were super high - i never bought even one pair only try on. That's really interesting that we have such opposite memories of the store haha

The word for a heel that doesn't fall straight from the back and doesn't extend out past the back but instead is set in from the back, or "tilted toward the front" as you say, the word for that is "underslung" - underslung heels.
Not street shoes exactly, but this style of shoe is basically THE shoe shape still used for flamenco dance. Perforated leather, mixed leather types, colours, cut-outs, and that arch curve are all super characteristic, as are the ties and rounded tips. There must be some reason flamenco shoes look exactly like 1930s shoes, right?

I’m not a dancer, but I love this type of shoes so much I purchased most of my heels in this style I just fixed new gripping soles underneath so I could wear them outside, and they’re SO comfortable and look great with all outfits

My perspective as a guy: The rounded slightly stubby toe makes for a very petite and cute look, and the heels are more ergonomic and balanced because it goes on to sit right underneath the heel of the foot. It all creates a visual balance which makes the shoes themselves pleasant to look at, and because of that make them very flattering when worn. It is all very elegant and I agree with you that they are all very under appreciated!
@@holliisixx american duchess shoes 100%, the heel blocks are in the cirrect placement and they are leather so they mold to your feet. They take some break in time, and i would recommend wearing stockings with them for comfort, but i wear them all day at work and only start feeling pain at about the 10-12 hour mark

My favorite book when I was a child was “The Elves and the Shoemaker” and these were the types of shoes drawn in my copy. I ADORE the style and it’s so nostalgic for me.

I love how the heels taper in to fully support the weight at the center of gravity. And the heels are thick enough that you aren't teetering on a pencil. And some of them have a slight platform at the ball of the foot but it's covered by the leather so you don't notice it's a platform, and it allows you to have a higher heel but without such a steep angle between the heel and the ball of the foot. It's just all so harmonious and designed for wearability and walkability. I feel like shoes today are designed for people who get driven everywhere or carried everywhere and who never actually stand up or walk. And the leathers are so luxurious looking, the rich browns, claret, bottle green. Autumn colors. And there were T- straps to hold the shoe on your foot, laces to adjust it to fit different size arches. All practical but also pretty.
@@yuuri9064 There is a reason why dancing shoes always have their heel at the center of the heel of the foot, not far back. If that is putting you off-balance, you need to practise your balance. Which isn't that uncommon - starting by finding your center of gravity. (It is a simple excercise and I should redo it too, I guess - too little dancing in recent years...)

@@yuuri9064 I have bought dancing shoes even just for formal evening wear for ergonomic reasons - the only downside is that they often have leather soles and need to be resoled for use outside dance floor. The soft leather (don't know the term in English, not surface leather) doesn't take wet well...
Girl, you're describing the shoes my mom and I have worn for 10+ years and usually look for! For ppl with wide or large feet and thicker body built, they give height with proper support and that classy feel, if you like a little vintage in your outfit. I strongly suggest you check our the Polish brand Sensatiano who make custom made shoes with many classic silhouettes, custom heels and many shades of leather or satin.

In the '30s and '40s, many women needed shoes to be versatile: suitable to go from work, to walking, to dancing, etc. so that created a boom in shoes that were beautiful and (relatively) practical. My mother and grandmother had some beautiful shoes, from the pre-stiletto era.
I think it's the idea that because the Great Depression took place then, everything stopped, nobody bought anything, and everyone wore flour sacks for a decade, and then World War II kickstarted life again. Which is just dumb.
I think it's because it's so "covered up" it creates a silhouette that reads very matronly today. If you don't have a somewhat athletic, slim hipped figure, it looks even worse. But don't worry the time will come for a 1930s revival.

Shoes like this aren't made anymore because most shoes are factory made instead of hand-made and the lasts (the temporary foot used to build the shoes around) don't focus on the curve of the foot and arch support. The shoes you said you thought looked uncomfortable probably were extremely comfortable because the curve was the arch support. The heels of nowadays aren't comfortable because they don't have any arch support nor do they place the heel in the correct position; they place it towards the back of the heel, forcing you to balance back heavy, instead of towards the centre of the heel (as you pointed out that it leans into the arch), which gives equal support across the foot, like they used to. Modern shoes are so wrong! I also love how all of their shoes had a heel to them, modern shoes have lacklustre heels to them and a lot of them reach to the floor with no heel at all which is terrible for your feet. Having a small heel, like those tennis shoes, gives great support to the foot when walking or running.
I'm sorry but could you explain to someone who knows nothing about fashion or foot structure (aka me) how/why having a raised heel on the shoes is good, considering that my natural foot is constructed the way it is and presumably evaluated by evolution to be already good for walking/running?
@@helenanilsson5666 When one runs barefoot they run on the balls of their feet and when one walks barefoot they will naturally push their weight on the balls of their feet too because that elevation provides stability when walking/running and it trains the calf muscles to better support you. What heeled shoes do is mimic that; I'm talking about heels that are 2-3 inches high, not high heels that are 5+ inches but they will also do the job too. You can't exactly walk out barefoot in a cold climate, and you need to protect the skin from being cut and infected, so shoes were created to protect the feet. However, most modern shoes don't take into consideration foot structure which is why heels are positioned underneath the heel, instead of tilted under the arch, and why they don't have a curved arch to provide arch support (to put your feet into the position they need to be in to provide stability), which is why modern shoes, especially heels, kill the feet if worn for long periods of time. The "golden age" of footwear was between the 16th century and the 1930/40's in Europe because they were elevated and had the curved arch; but don't get me wrong, there were many ridiculous shoes back then, like there is today, but the overall consensus was that the majority were structured well.
I wore 30s style shoes for my wedding night, as a tall women with 41 size shoes, they looked so elegant even on my feet and were incredibly comfortable. All women in the family ended up barefoot after a couple of hours and I didn't feel a thing with them the whole night. Definitely a trend that needs to come back, so elegant and wearable at the same time.
1930s shoes are truly beautiful. The shape, style and design are perfect and they even make me with large feet for a woman feel attractive, they make me feet look smaller. Omg I was lucky enough before COVID to visit the Bata Shoe Museum during their exhibition of 1930's shoes - those gold seashell ones are even more gorgeous in person. Gold shoes were popular because they matched so many outfits, so that women could look chic even though money was tight due to the depression. Also! So many platform shoes! The men's shoes they had on display were also beautiful.

Actually much more comfortable than shoes today, since modern ones have both narrow and FLAT!?! toe boxes and really hurt. TS is a tall woman (like me) she probably wears size 8,5 or 9 (like me) and I feel shoe fashion just doesnt make designs to help us. She definetly has money to have nice shoes but common people has to deal with "ugly" or out of fashion shoes if we want to walk without pain.
I was just about to comment the same thing. I've owned Fluevogs since 2006 and many of their heels have these older styles and are very comfortable as the heel curves forward. Plus, the minis were great with the inverted heel style though appear to have been retired for the time being. I just had one pair of boots reheeled and resoled, another pair reheeled and two other pairs of heels repaired due to wear and tear. Fluevogs are great shoes and the only many issue that they don't start cheap but if you take care of them they will last you a long time.

MAKEUP: 1920s: doll lips, minimal makeup contrary to popular belief, some darker eye looks at times. 1930s: more overdrawn lips, fuller lips...think Joan Crawford, more refined makeup, making started becoming a thing more. HAIR: 1920s: that dreaded bob, fingerwaves but quite tight fingerwaves. 1930s: slightly looser more brushed out and refined fingerwaves FASHION: 1920s: drop waisted dresses, ill fitting to be honest, cocoon coats, oversized, horrible color schemes. 1930s: more elegant streamlined silhouettes with tailored suiting, bias cut silk gowns, etc... thats a quick concept of how i see it.

Until the post war era teens where expected to take on their parents fashion to become adults, clothing choices went from childrens wear to adults wear. No In-between options, nothing have ever been made just for them until then
Ho!! I actually owned a pair of leather shoes like that for years! Wore them to death. They were actually pretty stable and confortable, I wore them as a waitress in a french high end restaurant. They hurt a LOT less the toes than modern heels. Also, you can pivot on those larger heels super easy and make a cool move lol
I was an extra on a 30s period piece once and the shoes I got to wear were so cute and I got used to wearing them in no time. I really hope we bring that style back.
Some of the most cherished items I was given by my mother in-law, were a couple of pairs of her shoes from when she was in college at Berkeley in California during WWII. Tho they are not the 30's but 40's shoes, they still have that graceful style of line and curve so missing in shoes today. The one pair is of alligator and has two purses to match. One purse is a small elegant handbag and the other a larger strapless tote for travel. They are made even more special by the fact that my father in-law purchased the gator skin while traveling through the Panama Canal in 1945 on board his Navy ship the USS Hampton. When they reached Panama City, as an officer, he was given leave to visit the town while the ship was moved through the locks. He found this gator skin in the marketplace and bought it. Later when his ship got to Virginia he took some leave and took the skin to New York city, where he had a shop custom make him the two purses and matching pair of shoes. The shoes are slightly open toed with a narrow strap across the back and that lovely heel that leans in as you were showing us. The whole set is truly delightful. The 2nd pair of shoes are a pair of purple leather shoes with a tall black heel, which mother used to wear when dancing. She always chose tall heels because Dad was 6 feet tall and she barely 5' 2". These shoes are so lovely, they are very simply in their lines but have a wide band that comes over the top of the foot with little eyelets that match eyelets in the body of the shoe so the shoe ties down the side. The overall affect of the shoes and their design makes you foot look small and slim. I have never seen another pair of shoes like them and always wished I could. They just don't make shoes like these anymore....sigh!
When you were showing all the heeled shoes I was like "yeah they're pretty but idk not for me," but then I saw the boots (in the first pic) and I was like "I NEED A PAIR LIKE THOSE RIGHT NOW!!"
Actually, when the heel curves down beneath the arch it displaces the stress on the arch of the foot. There was also a small metal strap like spring beneath the leather lining of a shoe. They were really comfortable. Now the place the heel straight down. It causes all kinds of problems, including breaking easily.
Actually I've heard that a heel like that (pushed to the front) is much more comfortable than a heel placed at ths back of the shoe and that's cause the pressure aims the centre of your foot
@@winterinbloom Actually it all does make it more comfortable! There is a girl (I don't remember her nickname) at IG and RUclips and she makes her own shoes based on historical ones. They all have this curved shape and she said that they are way more comfortable than modern shoes because of that.

My favorite thing about that curved heel design is that it’s meant to actually correctly distribute the weight of your body over the foot healthily-a lot of modern heels have the heel right under the very back end of the heel, not centered under it, so rather than the weight being actually centered under the fleshy part of your heel that is used to taking and cushioning weight, all of your weight is shifted back and pinpointed in that one spot, basically just on the back of the bone. And that’s why modern heels hurt so damn much!

As a former pedorthist who used to teach shoe construction - the first two drool-worthy shoes are made with a curved shank, and the top line is curved in more than most shoes are today. Making the heel like this is a giant pain in the ass, but it means that, if the heel counter hits your foot correctly, the heel will not slip, which is virtually impossible to achieve with heels unless they have a strap or are too small for the foot. Also, if the curve of the shank lines up correctly, which it looks like it was designed for that, the shoe will actually support the arch, which is rare in heels, because when you raise the heel, a person's arch height generally gets higher. Finally, the angle of the heel is underslung. If the balance is wrong, it could break when a person steps off a curb, but if the designer got it just right, then the wearer won't feet a jolt of impact when her foot hits the ground, and there will be less slapping from the heel to the ball, making it reasonably easy to walk in, even though the heel looks fairly high (I'd guess about 8 cm).
Do you have any recommendations of brands that manages to achieve this or something close to this ideal?
I haven't sold shoes in a bit over a year, and I used to work in a very orthopedic shoes store, so I'm not up to date on dress shoes, but there's an Italian factory called Brunate that makes house labled shoes for other brands that comes close.

I'm a pro tango dancer & occasional salsa dancer, and if you're willing to pay, you can get anything cut to order with heel choice out of Argentina or Italy. The split shank makes a world of difference. You couldn't pay me to wear molded mall crap anymore.

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette agree so, so much! The 20s are the least flattering decade. At least Regency had an empire waist that accentuated your boobs. The 20s was just shapeless sacks all around. I really don’t get the attraction. It looks okay (but only okay) on very very slim, tall women without much in the way of boobs and hips. Anyone else though? Ugh.
My personal favourite era to wear is 1890 to 1910. I don’t go in for the massive leg of mutton sleeves (though a bit of poof is nice), but everything else I adore. And it’s flattering. And comfortable. If it gets cold, add another pair of stockings and some more petticoats. If it’s warm, wear linen or cotton. And it’s not so far out that you get stared at if you wear the fashion out and about.
I do love the crinoline and bustle eras, but they would get stared at, and they don’t really work well with a wheelchair. I do like pulling bits of inspiration from them though, as well as a whole bunch of other eras. But my base era that I wear out of the house is Belle Époque and Edwardian. Never 20s.
Neartmhor Thank youuuu I wasn’t sure anyone would agree with me! The 20s really do only work with one body type. If I tried to wear something from the twenties, I would look like I was wearing a potato sack. And if I tried to define my waist, it would be inaccurate. The Victorian and Edwardian periods, along with the time periods before them, were great because even if you didn’t have the right body type you could fix that with padding and all of that. I also love the 1890s and 1900s clothes! They really are flattering on anyone. I’m sure you look amazing in those clothes ❤️

I know right! Pointed shoes are rarely, if ever, attractive. They elongate one’s foot into the oddest shape. But rounded shoes compliment a foot’s natural shape while making it appear smaller and more dainty.
As for heels, I do not mind it when they are thin/long, but “chunky” heels can come in such beautiful shapes and are far more comfortable and sturdy.

@@akatie888 oh I love stilettos and almost always wear heels! But I really dislike the pointed toe. I don’t think they look as good but they also don’t feel as good. If I wear them, I’ll have to go up in size so that my toes can actually fit instead of being all scrunched up and in pain.

To be fair, the 1930s channeled all of their fashionness into accessories like hats and shoes and we don't really care about those very much anymore. Also, everyone assumes that once the stock market crashed that suddenly everybody was dirt poor and nobody had fun or parties or bought anything any more, so OBVIOUSLY fashion that decade was completely dead.
And the saddest thing is that the ''20s fashion'' which is popular isn't even realistic, it is a largely phoney, distorted, and _caricaturesque flapper_ version of it...

BTW, Gucci did a 1930s inspired pump in mid 2019 (IDK whether it was spring or fall collection) but it was called "Ortensia" and was black satin with a curved heel and rounded toe, they almost looked like 1930s does 1760s to me. Black satin with moss green satin looking interior and of course gold double G buckles.
On the high side of inspired, the pointed toe is too much. they do look closer to 1700's.

@@MichieHoward I think round toes are hideous and look like mid 2000s like 2006-2008 era shoes. If you arent dressing in full 1930s schick rounded toes will look stupid. They aren't actually as flattering on the foot as Karolina suggests, try wearing a rounded toe shoe with elegant cigarette pants or trousers, you are gonna look like a bumpkin.

The pointed ones just make people look like a wicked witch. Also, the rounded ones are a lot more comfortable to wear than the pointed ones, since the rounded tip follows the natural shape of your toes a lot more closely than the pointed ones. Btw, I wear a modern style of clothing, just in case you were wondering if I'm prancing around in 1930's gear.

Omg do you remember when there was this cheap chain store called Centro in Poland and they had some nastiest shoes? I remember being in a hurry a day before my friend's sister's wedding, frantically looking for shoes that looked pretty and would be somewhat comfortable and easy on my high-school student budget. And i found them in this cheap ass store, for 35PLN, they had the exact pretty 30's curves, a bow, made in black velvet, the heel height was **just right**. I wore the hell out of them for years. Best purchase ever, I regret so much I cannot have them back. I could not find a shoe like that anyqhere else :( I have photo of me dancing in these shoes and I never liked looking at my feet as much as on this photograph lol.
We also had Centro in Ukraine and I bought my graduation party shoes there last minute for a ridiculous price. They turned out to be the most comfortable and good-looking heels I had in my life lol! I danced the whole night wearing them for the first time and my feet weren't damaged :D
Oh my gosh, Centro was my bane of existence! The shoes were super cheap, but every. single. pair. hurt my feet and they were super high - i never bought even one pair only try on. That's really interesting that we have such opposite memories of the store haha

Not street shoes exactly, but this style of shoe is basically THE shoe shape still used for flamenco dance. Perforated leather, mixed leather types, colours, cut-outs, and that arch curve are all super characteristic, as are the ties and rounded tips. There must be some reason flamenco shoes look exactly like 1930s shoes, right?

My perspective as a guy: The rounded slightly stubby toe makes for a very petite and cute look, and the heels are more ergonomic and balanced because it goes on to sit right underneath the heel of the foot. It all creates a visual balance which makes the shoes themselves pleasant to look at, and because of that make them very flattering when worn. It is all very elegant and I agree with you that they are all very under appreciated!

@@holliisixx american duchess shoes 100%, the heel blocks are in the cirrect placement and they are leather so they mold to your feet. They take some break in time, and i would recommend wearing stockings with them for comfort, but i wear them all day at work and only start feeling pain at about the 10-12 hour mark

The best shoes of the 1930’s were the ruby slippers. 👠 Not only were they stylish, but they could get you back from Oz in a hurry.
I love how the heels taper in to fully support the weight at the center of gravity. And the heels are thick enough that you aren't teetering on a pencil. And some of them have a slight platform at the ball of the foot but it's covered by the leather so you don't notice it's a platform, and it allows you to have a higher heel but without such a steep angle between the heel and the ball of the foot. It's just all so harmonious and designed for wearability and walkability. I feel like shoes today are designed for people who get driven everywhere or carried everywhere and who never actually stand up or walk. And the leathers are so luxurious looking, the rich browns, claret, bottle green. Autumn colors. And there were T- straps to hold the shoe on your foot, laces to adjust it to fit different size arches. All practical but also pretty.
And rounded toes. Don't forget the rounded toes. So cute, so comfortable, so practical. The perfect combination of form and function.

@@yuuri9064 There is a reason why dancing shoes always have their heel at the center of the heel of the foot, not far back. If that is putting you off-balance, you need to practise your balance. Which isn't that uncommon - starting by finding your center of gravity. (It is a simple excercise and I should redo it too, I guess - too little dancing in recent years...)

I watch 1930s movies almost exclusively. I ALWAYS notice their shoes. They look like they’d be SO comfortable and looked so stylish no matter what.
In the '30s and '40s, many women needed shoes to be versatile: suitable to go from work, to walking, to dancing, etc. so that created a boom in shoes that were beautiful and (relatively) practical. My mother and grandmother had some beautiful shoes, from the pre-stiletto era.

I think it's the idea that because the Great Depression took place then, everything stopped, nobody bought anything, and everyone wore flour sacks for a decade, and then World War II kickstarted life again. Which is just dumb.

I think it's because it's so "covered up" it creates a silhouette that reads very matronly today. If you don't have a somewhat athletic, slim hipped figure, it looks even worse. But don't worry the time will come for a 1930s revival.

Shoes like this aren't made anymore because most shoes are factory made instead of hand-made and the lasts (the temporary foot used to build the shoes around) don't focus on the curve of the foot and arch support. The shoes you said you thought looked uncomfortable probably were extremely comfortable because the curve was the arch support. The heels of nowadays aren't comfortable because they don't have any arch support nor do they place the heel in the correct position; they place it towards the back of the heel, forcing you to balance back heavy, instead of towards the centre of the heel (as you pointed out that it leans into the arch), which gives equal support across the foot, like they used to. Modern shoes are so wrong! I also love how all of their shoes had a heel to them, modern shoes have lacklustre heels to them and a lot of them reach to the floor with no heel at all which is terrible for your feet. Having a small heel, like those tennis shoes, gives great support to the foot when walking or running.
I'm sorry but could you explain to someone who knows nothing about fashion or foot structure (aka me) how/why having a raised heel on the shoes is good, considering that my natural foot is constructed the way it is and presumably evaluated by evolution to be already good for walking/running?
@@helenanilsson5666 When one runs barefoot they run on the balls of their feet and when one walks barefoot they will naturally push their weight on the balls of their feet too because that elevation provides stability when walking/running and it trains the calf muscles to better support you. What heeled shoes do is mimic that; I'm talking about heels that are 2-3 inches high, not high heels that are 5+ inches but they will also do the job too. You can't exactly walk out barefoot in a cold climate, and you need to protect the skin from being cut and infected, so shoes were created to protect the feet. However, most modern shoes don't take into consideration foot structure which is why heels are positioned underneath the heel, instead of tilted under the arch, and why they don't have a curved arch to provide arch support (to put your feet into the position they need to be in to provide stability), which is why modern shoes, especially heels, kill the feet if worn for long periods of time.
The "golden age" of footwear was between the 16th century and the 1930/40's in Europe because they were elevated and had the curved arch; but don't get me wrong, there were many ridiculous shoes back then, like there is today, but the overall consensus was that the majority were structured well.

I wore 30s style shoes for my wedding night, as a tall women with 41 size shoes, they looked so elegant even on my feet and were incredibly comfortable. All women in the family ended up barefoot after a couple of hours and I didn't feel a thing with them the whole night. Definitely a trend that needs to come back, so elegant and wearable at the same time.
1930s shoes are truly beautiful. The shape, style and design are perfect and they even make me with large feet for a woman feel attractive, they make me feet look smaller.

Omg I was lucky enough before COVID to visit the Bata Shoe Museum during their exhibition of 1930's shoes - those gold seashell ones are even more gorgeous in person. Gold shoes were popular because they matched so many outfits, so that women could look chic even though money was tight due to the depression. Also! So many platform shoes!
The men's shoes they had on display were also beautiful.

Agreed! They look adorable, prim, proper, sexy, classy... I love the little round toes, I think they used to call them babydoll pumps. Actually much more comfortable than shoes today, since modern ones have both narrow and FLAT!?! toe boxes and really hurt. TS is a tall woman (like me) she probably wears size 8,5 or 9 (like me) and I feel shoe fashion just doesnt make designs to help us. She definetly has money to have nice shoes but common people has to deal with "ugly" or out of fashion shoes if we want to walk without pain.

I was just about to comment the same thing. I've owned Fluevogs since 2006 and many of their heels have these older styles and are very comfortable as the heel curves forward. Plus, the minis were great with the inverted heel style though appear to have been retired for the time being. I just had one pair of boots reheeled and resoled, another pair reheeled and two other pairs of heels repaired due to wear and tear. Fluevogs are great shoes and the only many issue that they don't start cheap but if you take care of them they will last you a long time.

MAKEUP: 1920s: doll lips, minimal makeup contrary to popular belief, some darker eye looks at times. 1930s: more overdrawn lips, fuller lips...think Joan Crawford, more refined makeup, making started becoming a thing more. HAIR: 1920s: that dreaded bob, fingerwaves but quite tight fingerwaves. 1930s: slightly looser more brushed out and refined fingerwaves FASHION: 1920s: drop waisted dresses, ill fitting to be honest, cocoon coats, oversized, horrible color schemes. 1930s: more elegant streamlined silhouettes with tailored suiting, bias cut silk gowns, etc... thats a quick concept of how i see it.

Ho!! I actually owned a pair of leather shoes like that for years! Wore them to death. They were actually pretty stable and confortable, I wore them as a waitress in a french high end restaurant. They hurt a LOT less the toes than modern heels.
Also, you can pivot on those larger heels super easy and make a cool move lol

Thats why we always go for expensive shoes cause they are the only ones that will last long enough.
I was an extra on a 30s period piece once and the shoes I got to wear were so cute and I got used to wearing them in no time. I really hope we bring that style back.

Some of the most cherished items I was given by my mother in-law, were a couple of pairs of her shoes from when she was in college at Berkeley in California during WWII. Tho they are not the 30's but 40's shoes, they still have that graceful style of line and curve so missing in shoes today. The one pair is of alligator and has two purses to match. One purse is a small elegant handbag and the other a larger strapless tote for travel. They are made even more special by the fact that my father in-law purchased the gator skin while traveling through the Panama Canal in 1945 on board his Navy ship the USS Hampton. When they reached Panama City, as an officer, he was given leave to visit the town while the ship was moved through the locks. He found this gator skin in the marketplace and bought it. Later when his ship got to Virginia he took some leave and took the skin to New York city, where he had a shop custom make him the two purses and matching pair of shoes. The shoes are slightly open toed with a narrow strap across the back and that lovely heel that leans in as you were showing us. The whole set is truly delightful.
The 2nd pair of shoes are a pair of purple leather shoes with a tall black heel, which mother used to wear when dancing. She always chose tall heels because Dad was 6 feet tall and she barely 5' 2". These shoes are so lovely, they are very simply in their lines but have a wide band that comes over the top of the foot with little eyelets that match eyelets in the body of the shoe so the shoe ties down the side. The overall affect of the shoes and their design makes you foot look small and slim. I have never seen another pair of shoes like them and always wished I could. They just don't make shoes like these anymore....sigh!

Actually, when the heel curves down beneath the arch it displaces the stress on the arch of the foot. There was also a small metal strap like spring beneath the leather lining of a shoe. They were really comfortable. Now the place the heel straight down. It causes all kinds of problems, including breaking easily.

Actually I've heard that a heel like that (pushed to the front) is much more comfortable than a heel placed at ths back of the shoe and that's cause the pressure aims the centre of your foot

@@winterinbloom Actually it all does make it more comfortable! There is a girl (I don't remember her nickname) at IG and RUclips and she makes her own shoes based on historical ones. They all have this curved shape and she said that they are way more comfortable than modern shoes because of that.
I think that's how American Duchess makes a lot of their historical reconstruction shoes, with the heel further forward like this--they're GORGEOUS 🤗🤗🤗
