Elegant attire doesn’t always have to be seen by others, it’s just as valid to have them only for yourself, because you enjoy them. And I would say half of elegance anyway is in one’s demeanor.
I wear simple but comfortable house dresses, and slap on a lovely vintage apron when I cook. It’s the little things.
You could wear elegant undergarments with your work clothes and some high quality socks/stockings because you’re worth it. Maybe trick your bike out with some accessories or save up for a vintage one. Decorate your inner space and garden with things that remind you that you are elegant and lovely.

I think there’s a lot of truth in it; I have to take off a fedora to get in and out of a car. On the other hand, baseball-style caps are pretty ubiquitous here in the USA. They don’t get in the way. And for the deeply stupid, they can be decorated with “MAGA.”
Another, better President (could there be a worse one?) is often credited with the end of the classic fedora: John F. Kennedy. He was the first US President to abandon hats. His wife Jackie was of course rarely seen without one, until years later. Narrow-brimmed hats for men were still popular into the mid 60s, see Don Draper and early James Bond (like Goldfinger).
Personally, I miss fedoras. They’re not much protection, and they blow away in any slight wind - but they’re cool.

Aida Kopmels thank you so much I wear hats all the time every day. They help me regulate my temperature. They help me keep cool and the sun off my face during the summer. They help me keep warm in the very start of fall through spring. I’m actually wearing one in my thumbnail pic but you can’t see a black leather pageboy hat...
I door hats. When I was little I used to take the dog cozy my great grandmother needed for our toilet paper, and wear them all summer long. I was queen of my toys and the misfit toys I was a good queen. Like Glenda the witch but a queen. My grandmother for bid me to be the good witch. 😑😏😆🤣😂
Thank you so so much that’s so sweet. I take a lot of pride in the hats that I wear upon my head. They are part of me. When I make friends with people they finally realize that I do wear hats every single day. 🤔 i’m the hot lady... and I quite like that... I have transitioned from crocheted dolls on my head too many different varieties. My favorite find are those very old but still beautiful fur caps... I even love a muff and a matching fur cap...
I look for vintage always or I have some handed down to me.

There’s a lovely scene in John Buchan’s ‘The 39 Steps’ (1915) where, due to an altercation and a quick escape, he is forced to walk through a town without a hat. He is worried the police will stop him; not because he’s committed a crime, simply because being outside without a hat is suspicious. Almost impossible for a modern reader to understand this.

I just think of Hitchcock when I think of The 39 Steps, I did not know it was ("loosely" according to Wikipedia) based on a novel. I am a big Film Noir fan and this brings to mind an image from a scene in a recently watched film where the character puts his hat on a hat peg when entering a room. Probably a frequent little action in a lot of those films. The fedoras seem to loom large in "Cry of the City" looking great on Victor Mature and even his kind of dopey detective partner. But now come to think of it, the villain of the movie, Richard Conte, did not wear a hat in that movie.

Here in Arizona I wear a hat every day. While I try to make it at least somewhat fashionable, it's not a fashion statement. It's to keep the sun out of my eyes, the glare out of my eyes and the heat of the sun off my head. My head appreciates the shade. If some think I'm trying to be trendy, too f'in bad. There's really no 'fashion' any more anyway, just trends. So why not wear what works? Even when it rains a hat is helpful...especially if one wears glasses! So with an eye to whatever fashion might be, it's utilitarian. I favor straw fedoras or planters for summer, wear a beaver or rabbit fedora when it's wet or cold in winter....and narrow brim fedoras or trucker caps when doing outside work where brim width is an issue. Since we don't have hurricanes here, a good fit negates most problems with wind, even with a relatively broad-brimmed hat from the Yucatan. Of course since most people hardly ever venture forth from the air-conditioning, and hat's are a hassle in a car I certainly don't expect it to become a trend. But for Arizona a hat just makes sense, if one is outside much at all. If one wants to bake their brain, they should feel perfectly free to do so....not my brain. :) Stetson, Sterkowski and Snap-Lok, from Arizona. Chow!

So I have another theory: the end of hats coincided with the advent of tan=attractive in western culture. In the mid 1870, working women wore bonnets because paleness was hottest despite working in the Midwest American sun, in part because rich fashionable ladies never had to work outside. Then by the 1970s the “Malibu Barbie” coincided the advent of blue-collar work moving inside (call centers, typists, etc), and tanning had the connotation of having time to lay about by the pool. We made the purpose of hats more redundant.
    That said, I love hats.

i’m not so sure about that. contrary to popular belief, being tan was fashionable before the 1970s because is showed that you were wealthy enough to vacation. also, the popularisation of baseball caps and trucker hats was in the 70s, so it seemed they still wanted to shade their face from the sun. idk though, i wasn’t alive and i’m not a fashion expert, it just seems like they became too formal.

First of all, I live in a hot place, but secondly, every time I wore one of my gorgeous little pillboxes or tiny 1940s/1950s hats that perched at an angle on the side of my head, people would ask me when I was serving drinks, and when the flight would land. By the 1990s, basically the only people still wearing smart little hats were flight attendants. I miss my hats, but have grown used to dressing simply. (Edit: so anyone wondering, I’m at an American school, and it’s so the staff can easily identify you as a student apart from a school shooter)
Edit-edit: most of the comments are pretty cool and I thought they deserved to be here as well; Mallory Rivers brought up a great point about how they’ve been banned since she was in school a while back and the justification was how hats can be used for gang identification. This makes sense as hats had been banned long before school shooting were relatively common (≈90s). In elementary school (ages 5-11), I remember the reasoning as head lice.
Another asks if this comment was satire, but unfortunately not. Tying into above, my school definitely cites this as the reason as it had been shot up three years ago by a former student. And we had had a different school shooting in our county a couple decades back.

I believe that hats were a casualty of automobile culture. The shape of modern automobiles makes hat wearing difficult: lower ceilings, lower clearances (to get into the car) and headrests. Try wearing a hat with a brim without it getting popped right off by the headrest of the car.

    • @elultimo102
      @elultimo102 4 года назад +27

This also goes for men. Those annoying headrests in "modern" cars, make it impossible to wear much other than a baseball-type cap. I have 20 stetson-types that I never wear, because of the car head restraints. It's a pain to have to change it. I normally wear a "gimmie" hat whenever I leave the house, in large part to hide my "shame"---no hair. I only take it off in church.

Also cars just meant people spend less time outside on average. Prior to the car most people walked or biked together most places or wait at the station for the train so one needed a good brimmed hat. But now you walk a short distance to your car, drive, and then walk a short distance to your destination. Hat's have lost the element of practicality in that environment.

Along with the wearing of hats, society also was more aware of social graces! I remember men removing their hats when walking into a building or church, or even when a “lady” walked into the room. Those days are over unless you’re in the military. Men don’t even respect the house of God anymore-they just walk right in with their baseball hats on (which still bothers me). I have the last dressy hat my father ever wore. He gave it my husband (his only last son-in-law) and it’s 80 years old. I love hats and had them in my wedding and wear them from time to time! Wish hats would come back!

@@leinanifuna8994 Great question. Discipline, respect and honor is my answer. In church one would remove their hat to show respect and honor unto the Lord. One would wear a clean shirt and remove their hat at the dinner table, to show respect to the wife, mother .... honoring the one who cooked the food and thanking the ONE🙏🏽 who provided it. All while showing the young ones proper behavior. All together these are disciplines that go far beyond the moments and on to a better society that understands respect, honor and the proper ways to act. Like respecting the nations flag and partaking of the blessings of stating the pledge. In my home during a Bible study and prayer, I would want those around me to remove their hat during prayer; however I would have my husband wear a hat and demonstrate the removal during prayer.... setting the example. :)

This is where it comes from. This is why most western countries that were heavily Christian adopted this custom in secular settings as well as in church. 👒 🎩 So, hats are only disrespectful during prayer if worn by a man. And a women without something on her head during prayer would be equally disrespectful. (Not everyone agrees that this is what the passage means, but if you require men to take off their hats you would have to require women to put something on…to be biblically consistent.) This is where the custom comes from.

People wore hats over the centuries to keep the dust out of their hair. When people started washing their hair more often, they no longer felt the need to protect it from dust. Another secondary reason, is the loss of formality in society. Just look at today's sport utility vehicles, casual dress and lack of desire to impress others in a formal, dignified manner.

That's the rub, though. People who say they want their hats back aren't really prepared for the etiquette that accompanied them. You don't wear hats indoors or when eating, and then you have to carry it around. Wearing a hat "properly" is essentially asking to be handicapped half the day because your hand is occupied holding the hat you "aren't allowed" to be wearing for myriad reasons. There's a reason they fell out of favor with the working class, and that's because they're incredibly inconvenient.

Money is the reason why functional pockets/pockets in general disappeared from women's clothing - so we would buy purses. And purses for every ocasion, for every outfit and don't forget that your shoes must match your purse and belt if you're wearing one.

I think the popularization of showers also has something to do with this. You don't notice the dirt and dust that collects in your hair when you're washing it every day rather than combing it out. It ceased being a necessity. I still think they're important for protecting your head from sunburn and keeping your hair cleaner, but most people probably don't think of them as necessary hair protection - the exception being the bonnets that some people with super curly hair wear. The crazy styles of the 40s also aided in this, because those small styles barely offered protection anyway.

SPOILER: According to Monty Python's film "Meaning of Life":
The meaning of life can be reduced to two fundamental concepts.
    1. People aren't wearing enough hats.
    2. Matter is energy. In the universe there are many energy fields which we cannot normally perceive. Some energies have a spiritual source which act upon a person's soul. However this soul does not exist ab initio as orthodox Christianity teaches, it has to be brought into existence by a process of self guided observation. However this is rarely achieved owing to man's unique ability to be distracted from spiritual matters by everyday trivia.
