English Heritage do you know what specific style of fake eyelashes were used? I love the way these ones look and I looked up their website and theres multiple options and I’m not sure which ones were used in this video. Thanks❤️
Both the cake mascara and lipstick are by Besame (BEH-sah-meh, which means "kiss me" in Spanish), a brand that specializes in reproductions of vintage cosmetics. They also have things like a violet-scented face powder, perfume decanters and scents that represent different decades, long-bristled brushes for face powder application...holding the packaging in one's hand (metal cases for the lipstick, embossed logos on the boxes, brush handles that curve sensuously, compacts that open with a push button) feels like stepping back in time--works of art, all of them. And the quality of the lipsticks is top-notch. My favorites are 1946 (Agent Carter's shade, aka "Red Velvet"), 1969 ("Dusty Rose"), 1930 ("Noir Red") and 1970 ("Chocolate Kiss"). I'm buying 1971 "Carmine" next!

I had a cake mascara sold by Avon in the 1980s. It had 2 side-by-side wells, one blue and one black, and came with a comb--as shown on the Besame product used in this video--plus a fine-tip brush. The product was meant to be used as mascara and/or eye liner. I used it mostly to line my eyes. I even remember the packaging, it was dark burgundy, with beveled edges. In the United States, you can currently find cake mascara made by Kryolan, Besame, La Femme Pro, CosPlay Supplies, and Longcils. The Longcils cakes come in a few colors, including Brown and Navy! I've also seen indie cosmetics producers offer their versions on Etsy. It's an interesting concept (for one, it's supposed to be more hygienic than mascara in a tube) but I suspect it's not more popular because while it darkens the eyelashes, it doesn't always hold the curl well, and we've grown used to the very curled look.
My mom also had used this type od mascara im 1980's . In Poland where I live You still can buy it from Celia company. My grandmother also had used to Pond's cream. She keep it In fridge. I will never forget a scent of this cream.

*HANDS UP* - not for a Mrs Crocombe makeup tutorial, but Mrs Crocombe throwing shade as part of the tutorial - e.g. if one of the scullery maids did some makeup on her day off to go to town with the gardener's boy, and Mrs Crocombe looking rather disapproving (while describing the makeup look)
Mrs Crocombe: "you will notice mary-ann is wearing lipstick today." *disapproving look* "She's stepping out with our Edgar on her day off. You might also notice that she is wearing a light blush." *shaaaaade* * sighs * "normally, the wearing of cosmetics is not allowed. However, as it is her day orff, some frivolities are permitted."
The model has such a presence! Even though she didn't speak for almost the entire video she brought attention to herself with her gestures. Pretty amazing to be able to do that if you ask me
The first modern smokey eye icon was probably Brigitte Bardot and Mary Quant. Then the ‘90s grungy look was created using one colour blended into a haze of smoke around the eye, sometimes with black pencil applied inside the eye so that the colour was intense at the lash line and gradually became sheer and smokey. This is when the look got its famous name and smokey eyes have well and truly stayed in fashion ever since. It's called smokey because of the hazey smokey-looking effect of the eyeshadow!
I have that mascara and use it all the time. It’s also a great eyeliner (The brand is Besame. As is the lipstick) The look on the lashes is more natural and not clumpy at all.
I was about to name the mascara and lipstick myself before I saw your comment. It bothered me so much that she named practically every big-brand product she used but gave absolutely no credit to Besame! So much for accuracy 😐

i love these because it feels like they really pay attention to accuracy, some videos you see you can tell don’t pay attention at all to the style of whatever era they’re focusing on
I love seeing models with hooded eyes. I feel like most models and celebrities don't have hooded eyes, and same for RUclips makeup channels too. It's hard to replicate eye makeup looks done on non-hooded eyes, if you have hooded eyes.

Ponds cold cream was always on my grandmother’s and my mother’s vanity tables. I use the cold cream to pre-cleanse my face prior to washing. There is nothing better at any price point. The fragrance is lovely as well.
Fantastic! But would have loved if you included a product list for the makeup. I'm most interested in the face powder, the eyeshadow, and the brand of fake lashes. Also curious as to which Besame shade of red was used. She looked gorgeous!
Thank you for this wonderful video. As an historical recreator, I've discovered that finding 20th century fashion/makeup/hair instruction is tricky. A lot of it is what the maker THINKS was the look, or modern materials are used because authentic ones aren't available. I'm old, but not old enough to remember the War, let alone the 30s, but my grandmother wore a version of it until she died in 1999 at 101 years of age. I still keep a jar of Ponds Cold Cream in her memory, and find that very few modern products remove makeup, even modern waterproof makeup, as thoroughly and completely. If I have any criticism of your recreation at all it's only that they brow shape is too similar to the 1950s and not the 30s, where the pencil-thin and curved, rather than arched brow was in vogue. I, myself, continued to use Max Factor's Pancake Makeup until I could no longer find it. In my teens my skin was, like most teens, very oily, and I found this makeup had a very slight astringent effect and tended to stay put better than the more modern products that were around in the 60s. The good news is that it can still be found on (surprise!) Amazon. The bad news is the price, a staggering $150 USD. Considering I used to be able to buy it for under a dollar, that's horrifying. Again, thanks for the video, the re-creation, and the lovely side tour of the stunning Eltham Palace.

I always love these videos! I love the explanation between the differences between black and white film vs color film approaches to makeup, I had never really thought about the shine being important for the former but that would make sense. My grandmother was one of the original Radio City Rockettes when they were still called the Roxyettes and she used to have gorgeous black and white photos of her in her dancing costumes--her makeup fit this video's description perfectly right down to her bleached blonde finger waves. Sadly those photos are gone, I will always be heartbroken about that.

Sharon Davis?! The professional Lindy Hop and Swing Dance instructor?! So excited to see her in this series!! She's amazingly talented and of course, gorgeous to boot! Great video!
stargazerlillie7 Yup, that’s THE Sharon Davis, extremely gorgeous and talented to boot 😁
I was like....wait..Sharon....from the Perth Swing scene?
So, is no one gonna talk about how gorgeous the model is?
Please do a 1960s Twiggy and/or Carnaby Circus look
I love how the actor/model is so obviously fascinated with the discussion going on :)
Fabulous! I love all these historical lessons and demos. And that house. Egads! So unbelievable. I would get lost and not be found for days.....if ever lol! Thank you!💞🎄🇬🇧
Amber looks so beautiful with shorter bangs!!! Her eyes are POPPING and GORGEOUS

I would love to see a makeup tutorial on the Georgian Period.
The model is beautiful 💋. Loved how glamorous this look was.
Hello from across the pond I love English Heritage!
absolutely stunning everything, the model the make up , the place !
YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR ANOTHER HISTORICAL INSPIRED MAEKUP TUTORIAL YESSSSS
Omg PLEASE let this turn into a series. I'd love to see Amber Butchart discuss everything from Rococo all the way to 90s Alexander McQueen ♥️♥️
The model is stunning (heavenly eyes!) and charismatic as hell! She needs to be in pictures!
Thank you for using products and a skin care routine similar to those from the ‘30! It really makes the look seem that much more authentic!
Love everything about this video, thank you English Heritage! :D
Super informative video! I just realized at the end that that’s the super amazing dancer Sharon Davis! I love her so much
If history was this i would study whole day !
I love amber butchart!!! I’m so excited for more! Could you look into doing a more historical makeup look? Perhaps look into the romans and their ideas of beauty?
I always love these videos! I love the explanation between the differences between black and white film vs color film approaches to makeup, I had never really thought about the shine being important for the former but that would make sense. My grandmother was one of the original Radio City Rockettes when they were still called the Roxyettes and she used to have gorgeous black and white photos of her in her dancing costumes--her makeup fit this video's description perfectly right down to her bleached blonde finger waves. Sadly those photos are gone, I will always be heartbroken about that.
Ah what a shame those photos are gone, they sound fabulous.
WOW!!! I love everything about this video!!! I'm a huge fan of fashion history. The model is sooooo gorgeous and knows just how to embrace that 30s grace and poise! 😍😍😍
Fashion historian is the best job😁
I liked that you used Besame cosmetics. Their lipsticks are amazing. They have so many wonderful red tones and a dusty rose, which is a soft mauve tone. I love how the eyes were done in this video. So soft and beautiful.
Cake mascara I can remenber my mother having one in the seventies and I bought myself one for my 40th birthday.
