- Discover how cosmetics from the Roman Empire literally changed the face of Britain in the 3rd century in our latest History Inspired Makeup Tutorial.
Fashion Historian Amber Butchart and Makeup Artist Rebecca Butterworth are at Wroxeter Roman City, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire. This time we’re showing you a step-by-step makeup tutorial inspired by real cosmetic artefacts found at Wroxeter.
From bathing to bright blue eye shadow, find out how important appearance was to Roman Britons and see the artefacts that shaped our tutorial. Watch as we use a replica grinder to apply eyeliner to our model Sarah Mhlanga and learn how to recreate the look at home. Our English Heritage Collections Curator Cameron Moffett is on hand to discuss the artefacts, while Properties Historian Dr Andrew Roberts tells us about life at Wroxeter.

one day an archelogists is going to find all the bobby pins Ive lost and it will serve as evidence of importance of hairstyles in the past
Same honestly!!
Where have all my daughters' hair ties gone? LOL
I just pictured all the bobby pins I might lost in my life... must be hundreds, but they will be like ohh this was so important for them, YEAAAH, I can stand not having a lot of hair accessories, but bobby pins? not at all, they are essential.
Duh. That’s all we have left of our glorious ancestry but it’s all we need as archeological evidence of European superiority.
Impure blood shall water the furrowed field.
I am sure my bobby pins are gone too the same dark mysterious place where al my single socks goes.
Who wants to see a Celtic Makeup Tutorial next?
@jeff byers And it would've been a great pairing with the Roman makeup tutorial! Since Romans and Celts were both in Britain then.
@@FunFilmFare They definitely didn't live peacefully together though haha. I agree fully though, it would be so cool to see a Celtic one!
Oh the Picts would be cool too. allthatsinteresting.com/picts The truth about them might have been embellished but they still looked cool. allthatsinteresting.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/three-picts-two-blue-one-female-featured.jpg
Meeeeeee!
@JW McCabe Yep I didn't even notice I spelled it wrong at least you knew what I meant.
Lowkey thought Amber was wearing pajamas... but I mean if she was, she'd be rocking it! Fascinated by this series, it's like a nice treat while waiting for more of Mrs. Crocombe!
Yasssss Mrs Crocombe!
Mrs Crocombe is a queen js
That woman can wear anything and make it look fabulous. She knows how to put together something visually interesting.
@@chantalperez7815 Totally!!
Pyjama power, pyjama Rama
I love how Amber dresses. People give her shit for some of her outfits but everytime they're unique, colorful, and eye-catching outfits.
Those people don't understand self expression.
But her outfits are often distracting, garish and even childish. Not at all keeping with the historical themes.
@@jarednil69 the other ladies wore blazers and slacks, blouses and dresses, that's not historical either, why should that matter?
I agree!!!
@@jarednil69 the theme is fashion, and she's a fashion expert so of course she's gonna dress flashy.. She's not the model for the era
For anyone interested in more early historical hairdressing, Janet Stephens here on RUclips has many videos on recreating Roman, Greek and Renaissance hairstyles using original practice. While she hasn't posted for a while, it is still an amazing resource for budding Ornitrices.
Those vids are amazing...all the technicalities & tools, extrapolating styling from various sources, & also that interesting idea that each Empress/high born lady had her own signature hairstyle, & her fans & supporters would copy it. Fascinating stuff! 💙
Chae Howard Thanks for the recommendation babe! 🏺🏛🏺
Thank you for the recommendation because I'm always looking for this kind of things, for whatever reason watching them lowers my anxiety and I have PTSD so it's a real comfort for me, love English Heritage!❤
@@meagandoesthings That makes sense...if I recall she did an episode on Julia Domna.
I'm so glad you mentioned her. I love her channel!
You could actually wear that outfit and hair/makeup today and no-one would blink an eye. Even the shoes!
How fun is that?
Would love to wear the shoes
@@rebekahfowler2958 look up medieval leather shoes on etsy and you will find very similar ones
I agree and disagree. I definitely think everyone would notice the odd over sized wool blanket shes hiding under, and the hair & pearls make sense together (looks regal/high class) but not with that outfit. The dress would look too shapeless on its own. So maybe just pairing parts of this outfit separately would still make sense today.
munty exchange
Oh well...I wear ponchos and large shawls instead of jackets quite often....doesn’t look much different.
Of course, I don’t carry them draped over my arm like that...I think they just did that, so people would be able to see the dress.
If she had slung the end over her shoulder, it would have looked quite contemporary.
But yeah...everything together might stand out a tad bit...😄
I live in Berlin though - that might color my view of what’s acceptable in terms of fashion!
@@raraavis7782 Agreed. If the dress were slightly shorter, it wouldn't stand out at all where I live in Japan. There's a trend toward oversized pieces and natural fabrics. Even her hair isn't that far off from the braids some of my students are into.
My 92-year-old grandmother (Greek) and I just watched this, and at the end, she said "That looks just like my mother!"
Hugs for your Yiayia! Mine has photos of her mother with the same hairdo
Love that
For those wondering, Amber's jumper is made by UK based brand, 'Lazy Oaf'. I love their clothing and my jaw dropped when I saw that she was wearing one of their designs!!
Thank you!!
I like their clothes too and they are a cool brand. But it was so jarring having her walk around the ruins in something very much influenced by pjs.
@MaGuffintop 'Lazy Oaf' sounds like a brand that offers pyjamas.
"You can't really sew your own hair..."
Black women everywhere: "Hold my beer..."
Ginger McGowan my thoughts exactly 🤣👌🏾
Alot of us don't drink beer but accurate😂😂
I was literally like??? Huh when she said that 😂😂
Can anyone explain me the story behind that ? 😂
I think they mean in that particular sort of elaborate style. Lol.
That cosmetics grinder/applicator set was brilliant. 💙
I know that would be a handy thing to put on eyeliner someone should bring it back.
Yes! Bring it back! You listening Ulta?!
Rad, right?
Is that Roman make up grinder replica available for us plebs to buy?
thebadfairyprincess yes, check out SallyPointer.com
A mortar and pestle is probably all us plebs can find!
Sorry, only for patricians :(
Plebs is short for plebeians, which is the Roman word for a commoner.
Emily B. holy fuck I love you 💕
First time I learned roman ladies sewed their hair I thought they were so smart! Is a wonderful idea to maintain your wig or hair intact in a time when there was no hairspray or hairdryer
lol it's obvious you've never had a weave
@@attaasamoahsnr9255 if I got a weave I'd lose hair lmao my white scalp definitely couldn't handle that
The sheep in the background sound so cute.
I THOUGHT I WAS IMAGINING A CAT! Thank God it was an actual animal in the video.
Wow the shots of the model walking through the ruins at the end made me shiver a little - stunning! Another wonderful video!
I agree, I liked that scene too. Among other things I liked being able to see how the clothing fit and draped.
Me: it's 3 am, I should go to bed
Brain: nO, we must watch a roman makeup tutorial
I absolutely love watching these tutorials!! Please keep them coming, I eagerly wait for more ❤
😍😍😍 I just got a ❤ from English Heritage!! I'm over the moon 🤗
Glad you're enjoying the series! Watch this space... 👀
I love these videos! It would be awesome to see a direct comparison in a single episode of clothing/makeup/hair looks from a few different social classes in the same time period. To have a few models stand side by side to really get a visual and see similarities and differences would be great.
I’ve never thought about it that way. The idea that our minds have been skewed by white statues, that we can’t imagine the romans being colorful.
It did show that the empire was much more diverse as well!
Look up statuary finds from Herculaneum! They have artifacts with original surviving decorations. I remember seeing a face bust with detailed eyelashes
So losing bobby pins was a trend even 2,000 years ago
The very first place my BF and I visited, on our first UK trip, was the portion of Hadrian's Wall near Haltwhistle. So I really, really enjoyed this. The UK goes above and beyond to preserve and protect both its history and the land itself, and I love it. Been five times in the last seven years, and every trip has been utterly magical. 💖🇬🇧🏰🐑
I wish English heritage would make natural organic makeup kits, or even a book on how to make your own makeup from garden herbs, flowers, minerals etc. Literally pure non toxic, organic products and DIY recipes.
Olive oil, lanolin, very fine charcoal (eyeliner), mica (eyeshadow), beets, egg white
I’m going to cry, I’ve been waiting for another one of these for soooo long! Literally dropped everything immediately when I saw it.
Thank you so much.
I love these videos too, I live for them ❤
@@angelafahlenkamp9311 I do hope you don't!
I love that both women wear dyed hair and make up that are so much of a Roman legacy. Seeing the three of them together is like watching the evolution of fashion.
Waiting for that 1970s british punk tutorial...
Kid Dynamo yess!🌟
absolutely
Not sure how many 70s punk English Heritage sites there are ...
Daisy Cartwright damn.. I guess that is a requirement for these videos.
@@Ohlookitsdaisyy 😂😂
I love the make-up artist’s red gem ring! It’s so pretty.
Her rings are very dope
Lanolin is amazing. Nothing better for cracked lips in winter, dry heels or cuticles.
Lanolips makes a fantastic range and it's purified so it doesn't smell funky or musty like old-school lanolin products.
OverUnderwhelmed I’m allergic 😩
Thank you for this information
In Australia we still use it a lot. In America it's not a thing
I live in Canada and I use lanolin on my lips and top of my cheeks often. The winter air is really harsh and dry. The lanolin feels soo amazing and my skin is always well hydrated after
@@shenanigans3710 We use it here in America, wtf.
Bruh the model's face when she said it was wool grease as she spread it on her face 💀
I thought the same thing!
My stepfather and his mother both use it today, like they buy it in tubs and use it on their body and faces... and I'll say this you would never guess that my step-grandma is a woman in her mid-70s, she looks like she's in her mid-40s so it must be doing something good.
Lili Loves lanolin is actually a common ingredient in most cream or liquid beauty products, especially lip balms. In fact you actually want lanolin in your beauty products because of its qualities
Ok but that’s literally what Nivea cream is, the main ingredient is lanolin
{} using the word “retarded” as an insult makes you look like an asswipe
I really love that Amber and Rebecca host this series. 2 intelligent, successful women with amazingly colorful hair and makeup
Sara has astonishing look with this Roman make-up. It really suits her!
I am trying to figure out why some people are hitting the thumbs down button for, the video is exactly what the title says...so why watch what you didn’t want to see it, it’s history so factual, did they expect a fairytale 🤦♀️
Admittedly, I'm only a third of the way through, but I see no factual evidence or basis for most of the stuff they're doing. I would like evidence, not just their word. Good history education tells you the source material so you know why they came to certain conclusions.
B M oh okay...I thought they did a good job with their explanations and artifacts
B M they mention written sources, and it’s fairly straightforward to analyse pigment traces on objects. I’m not sure what you want, for them to show the actual sources?
al gonzález it is the truth. The roman empire was huge and provided a lot of infrastructure and trade. This video is about the look, not the structure of rome's expansion. Shall we trash every culture that's had slaves, just go right ahead and disregard all of them.
Doreen Yadeley then why do you watch? Seems like you just want to be petulant and immature.
This series from Amber Butchart is the best. I love her bubbly personality. You can tell she loves what she does. Her enthusiasm reminds me of Dr Lucy Worsley. ....my absolute favorite
Like for a Ms Crocombe make up tutorial, let's make it happen people!
Satin Perfume ...Mrs Crocombe is Victorian. She wouldn’t have wore any at all as makeup was a sign of loose morals for women of that time I believe.
@@danielalvarado9019 Your dead right but would still love to see her as a glamour puss.
That's crazy 😂
Actually Victorians did wear make up, just not very much. They even have a video.
I know they did Queen Victoria, but a Lady Braybrooke video would be exciting!
She looks like Princess Leia Organa. I like this historical background of the Roman baths.
I wish they were still making this series! I’ve watched the existing six videos so many times, and I just love them!
Oh I know. I search around for equivalents but it’s not exactly this quality. No fault of their own. Probably budget and access.
The model looks like Meghan Markle
she does she was super perfect for a Roman woman who might have come from any part of the ancient world.
I thought that too!
You are right!
Sarah Mhlanga actually works as a Meghan lookalike.
That's what I thought.
Blue, that intense blue looks stunning on her. Pops the color of her eyes beautifully.
I hope they do a fashion look on what the women on the other side of Hadrian’s wall wore too!
The whole look is fantastic, and reminds me very much of the long cocktail gowns from the late 60's
Amber’s eyes and lipstick Rebecca’s hair and Sarah’s eyeshadow all together WOW 😍💙
The blue colour is fantastic, but a green one would have been more accurate (archaeologist here), loving it anyway 💜
Can you explain why that is? 🙂
Lapiz lazuli was extremely expensive, Malachite- not so much and more common.
Well, she did mimic the empress of that time so probably got more cents to spend. Just my insight
@Moogie B Oh go to hell. Empress Julia was Syrian.
@Moogie B she wasnt white lol
I love how Amber always matches her clothes to the theme or style of the topics or makeup shown on the videos. I'm guessing this one is inspired by the eye makeup and also water/cleanliness that the colour blue has been associated with? Love it!
Bit of a leap.
Did you stretch before that reach
Women still use lanolin while nursing to help with chapping.
And I used it as a diaper rash ointment with my youngest, and still use it when my hand crack during the winter. It's amazing stuff.
@@dollhousemakr Exactly. It is amazing how this wonderful natural emollient has endured.
I use lanolin on my lips for night!
I’m allergic to lanolin, wool, latex, any products derived from sheep basically. My father was as well.
It's in a lot of lip balms, too. Weirdly enough, I like it as a nipple balm and preventative diaper cream and hate it on my lips.
Can't unhear "the Raymond Empire"
I found the fashion luvvie presenter a touch grating but interesting way to do a vid!
YES!!! I'm not the only one!!! 😁
Seriously
i keep hearing ramen as in the noodles lol
"They conduct business inside baths." Awkwardly interesting lol
Where did they put their laptops and and smart phones?
And it happens literally till date
"Oh! My buisness partner! Come on in the water's fine"
the Finns still do this in saunas
Amazing to see how long the pearl necklace has been popular. Simple, natural.
This is a close second (behind the lovely Mrs. Crocombe) for my favorite English Heritage series! It’s such a fascinating glance into the past that I couldn’t get in a standard class or book!
You can actually sew your own hair with some practice. Used to do it when it was longer (after Janet Stephens' tutorials). Very comfortable. I just got a huge sewing needle, filed down the tip so it would be blunt, and used black thread.
They sell practice needles for children that would probably work as well
@@megmcguireme the seamlines on those get caught in your hair.
CaiusCassiusLonginus y
Curled needles are better, you can find them at beauty supply stores. Black women used them to sew in weaves 😑
It's midnight and watching this before sleep is my asmr
If you're curious about the hairstyle, Janet Stevens (mentioned in the credits) has a fantastic RUclips channel exploring Roman and other historical hairstyles.
Is it weird that I would totally wear this outfit, haha?? Aside from the heavy palla it all looks really comfortable!
Oh this is great ty. Ambers hair and makeup is perfect and the model looks fabulous
All the tools shes using to apply and mix the makeup is beautiful!
The model looks so beautiful and has such a sweet demeanor, also she looks a teeny bit like Meghan Markle!
I am here for this comment😅.
@@merveu.9752 Yes, the model looks very much like Megan Duchess of Sussex!
I was actually thinking that too.
Exactly what I was thinking.
She looks a lot like Meghan Markle - but with a sweeter, softer undertone, I´d say!
my grandma and aunties in Sudan use lanolin (that they obtain themselves, when you kill a sheep for eating they use every part they can use of the animal) to make skin and hairproducts. it's SO amazing and incredibly moisturizing. much better than anything you can find in store. they always send me some when they make new batches.
“I don’t know where to talk about Roman makeup sets”
“....I got you fam” BAAAAAAAAAAA
Love the subtle nod to Monty Python! Great series, super fun & educational.
This reminds me almost a bit of a 1960’s evening look! Just goes to show trends recycle🤣
Which were very much based on the the makeup seen on Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra in the 1963 movie
These vids are just wonderful. Thanks
I was so excited to see a new tutorial video today! Thank you this series is such a treat. Looking forward to many more... hopefully Edwardian or 1920’s!
Purple was reserved for the emperor back in those days.
J M Yeah. By law I think.
@@MissCaraMint Yes. Limited to the Emperor and his family. Thats why the model could wear a tunic(stola) with a purple stripe because her costume was more or less based on the wife of a Roman Emperor.
I can watch Amber Butchart all day. So enjoyable and educational. The model looks regal.
I would love to see video about the 40's and post-war era. Things like using powdered gravy to draw stocking seams on, and how lipstick was one of the luxuries that woman still clung to.
I always look forward to these magical videos. A million times thank you.
I am not joking, but I have bed sheets with almost the exact same cloud pattern!
I mean, the cloud shape is pretty universal. We all see the same clouds.lol
I love learning about the different cultures that have come throughout Britain during a different ages.
As someone else here said, the model looks like Meghan Markle!!! It's not just her facial features! Her expressions as well! The only thing that shouts to me as different from Meghan is her skin color, which is quite lighter! Amazing! Even the beauty mark above the lip!
I love that these historical make up videos are posting more frequently. With no offense intended on the rest of this channel, these are the reason I subscribed.
The shade coming off the model is killing me! 😂😂
I love this series of tutorials. I love the natural ingredients too.
I would love to see an ancient Chinese makeup tutorial.
Thing is, the channel is called "English Heritage". I don't think they've ever touched on any part of the world outside Great-Britain.
This is the England’s history preservation society, so Chinese history isn’t in their qualifications.

Oh I *LOVE* Amber Butchart. Her tv series was incredible.
Amber look like Madam red so much. She's beautiful
@Aidan Dillen Yes!!
I’m a huge fan of Amber! I loved her programmes on the reconstruction of historical garments and the amazingly talented people involved. I love this reconstructive archaeology which most people might find trivial but brings the past alive for me!❤
Just gonna put my shoes on... ah crap I left them at Hadrian’s wall
That equivalent to the random shoes we see today by the highways 😂
I really like this series, the minutiae of makeup and fashion brings history to life. Nicely engaged model in this one as well.
Madame Red, you've returned! Shower us with your beauty and fashion knowledge!
Sarah is beautiful but and her eyes are exotic but that makeup and the colors were phenomenal. Thanks Amber and company.
Amber is a work of art herself😍
The structure of these videos is really great. Informative, fun, and paced properly.
Ugh I love learning about y’all’s heritage it’s so cool and interesting
Model looked amazing in the Roman look. Love the use of colour for make-up and clothing against expectation of just white or natural colour.
I really want to start to doing tutorials like this. Literally amazing
What a wonderful history lesson. Woman have always had to work so hard to look beautiful for whatever age they live in. Men have it pretty easy!
Are we going to see more of the sheep character we got to hear in the background? :D
I can’t get enough of these videos! Please keep them coming!
Thank you for posting this. I've learnt so much in only twenty minutes thanks to you. Well done!
I am so in love with these tutorials, I have always been interested in history, I also love Amber Butchart and Rebecca Butterworth, I want more :)
I am sure Tesco is going to be annoyed that you called their olive oil "cheap!" HAHAH!
Ohh I think they know.
Amber and Sarah are so chic! I adore these gals!
As the model's makeup is being applied, is it just me or she begins to look a little bit like Meghan Markle?
I love these programs so informative and very well done .
Is there any chance that you would do something Viking?
For some reason I love the music you played in the beginning of the video

I'm so glad to see Butchart back at it.
She went to work on her pijamas, respect.
True
This is just wonderful. History and beauty! Spectacular.
I do like this, but the comment about modesty bothered me. Compared to the Greeks, the Romans were INCREDIBLY modest, and modesty was considered a virtue, particularly for women. Yes, the hairstyles could be very elaborate, but well-to-do Roman women covered their hair when going outside, and wrapped themselves in a palla to cover up even more.
Thank you for this! I was about to say the same thing. And that sense of modesty actually carried over for a VERY long time!
Yes thank you . I do believe they have mised out on some crucial information about the makeup .
She means modesty as in not flashy or showy.
@@PurnceNMe Yes, I think you're right.
They did mention that...hair covering also wasn't all the way through all the Roman eras. The fashion and head coverings changed quite a bit over 400 years and different regions of the empire.
I really like the make over. Was slightly distracted by the pronunciation if the host. I enjoy all the English Heritage videos. Bringing history to life
