The biggest projects I've been involved in lately were improving men's rights in custodial courts and smuggling teens around the age of sixteen out of Ukraine as they didn't want to fight in the war. You're not alone. Don't swallow the manosphere propaganda. Not everything in it is wrong, but the exclusion of women and tendency to stereotype is.

It should be noted that "liberal" is used here in the American sense of the word, i.e. synonymous for "left-wing" (even if, from a European point of view, what is considered "left wing" in the US is kind of distorted). Liberal in European politics is almost always used as an economic term, i.e. it describes pro free-market people (or anti-regulation, it's up to you) such as Thatcher or Macron. Thatcher and Reagan had similar economic views/policies, yet Thatcher would be considered liberal in European politics, and Reagan would not be considered liberal in US politics.

This is because Liberal exists as a rejection or rebellion of the world before like 1770 or whatever. This rebellion was against state-capitalism, hyper religious values, and reactionary conservatism.
The movement split into two factions. People who want a "free market", the rejection of state capitalism and state anything. The other group is the people who reject the oppression and want liberty.
The capitalist people went super conservative and religious. The liberty people became more socialist (socialism came a bit later than liberal politics).

I see a lot of young guys realizing that the equality promoted by more left leaning groups, when you dig below the surface, is actually anti-male at its core. I’ve spent days of my life talking politics with my left-leaning female friends. On an individual level they definitely like some males, but as I got to know them they all thought men in general were the problem. Not bad people or sociopaths. Men. We often hear about "toxic masculinity" but never "toxic femininity". Men are portrayed by left leaning group as the oppressors. Not all left leaning groups are antagonistic to men, but there is more of that going on, on the left. That’s not a welcoming environment for a young man to walk into. It pushes many young guys to the right I think.

In my experience, the left uses the "oppressor-oppressed" narrative as a tool. It is used to frame things so they simultaneously invoke outrage and empathy. It is often used because it can be coercive. It can manipulate human behavior and make people fall into line. It’s an excellent control mechanism, regardless of whether or not it applies to a given circumstance. Often times the debate of whether it even applies is skipped in favor of assuming it does apply. I didn’t mean to imply my explanation in my comment above was the only explanation. That’s probably why you viewed it as simplistic. It was all I felt like typing on my phone. The correlation with being liberal and having gone to university may be because people with strong liberal ideologies have largely taken over universities in the UK and US. It's unsurprising that if you're fed a liberal bias, openly and subliminally, for 4+ years at an early age, this will have an effect on your worldview. My thoughts:
The pill and the increased availability of safe abortions during the 1960s have enabled women to no longer tie their se*ual intercourse to procreation.
Therefore, the men and women could now engage in se*ual intercourse with the "same" consequences which meant that more women could now enter the workforce instead of having to "accept the norm" and become a housewife as a result of accidental births that occured previously.
As Louise Perry points out in her book "The Case Against the Sexual Revolution", women have a lower "ick" threshold when it comes to s*x as they are the only ones who could physically get pregnant as a result of the birds and the bees. Pregnancy is also a very physically risky and emotionally taxing act which makes women all the more cautious than men when engaging in "consequence-free sex".
From this invention of the pill, this bought an unprecedented amount of economic freedom and financial independence to women that was never seen in human history. Therefore it isn't at all surprising that it is women that are more likely to view the Sexual Revolution more positively and biological women are more likely to identify as queer, lesbian and generally more accepting of LGBTQ "ideology" as it is an expression that they are now free from the "patriarchal constraint" - that being almost guaranteed pregnancy after s*xual intercourse.
However in the men's perspective, this meant mostly losing their "role" as the breadwinner and for some losing their dating pool of women as being the provider was no longer a qualification that women needed in relationships. With better education around abusive relationships, conjugal violence and better awareness of marital r*ape, the practice of financial dependence of women to their husbands became associated with "toxic masculinity and patriarchy". Since women are more likely to be hypergamous, the potential dating pool for most men became almost close to zero. These group of disenfranchised men are therefore more likely to view the past of "husband breadwinner, lively happy wife at hime with the kids" with more positive nostalgia. Since Western leftwing parties tend to value economic freedom of individuals over valuing fertility, family and marriage, women are more likely to be liberal, and men are more likely to be conservative.
I could go on for 10 pages more and have missed some nuances but these are my 2 cents.

A very balanced and rather concice overview I'd say, a lot of good points for sure. One more nuanced idea is also perhaps that we've actually started to look into history with a different view, one also bringing out women amongst others. That in turn empowers at least a few as now the conservative side might not have an advantage over them in terms of "true traditional values", many e.g pre-christian cultures in Europe, especially those amongst Finnic or even Scandinavian peoples as far as I know, being way more gender equal (female inheritence rights etc) than the inbetween christian sphere.

Great post. I think it also ties in with men feeling abandoned by society. In the past, men had a clear purpose in life - provide for their wife and family. But with women becoming financially independent, the provider role is no longer valued, and allot of men will feel lost and searching for a purpose. Yet the left hasn’t given an alternative role for men, it mostly berates them for being sexist and privileged, without providing any alternatives over then, serve women. Men are accused of having “toxic masculinity’ yet are still expected to be stoic and unemotional in relationships- it seems like women like traditional gender roles for men even as they have gotten rid of them for themselves. Women claim to want to raise awareness over mental health but have little sympathy that the male suicide rate is several times higher. Combine that with the decline of unifying institutions (like churches, unions etc), atomization under capitalism, and society becoming more geared towards women (education, social media), and it’s no surprise that men are turning to the right, which actually speaks to them for a change

In Europe “Liberal” is more like “Libertarian” in the USA (which could also be called “Classic Liberal”) and would be considered more Center Right in the USA.

@@The_king567 Liberalism is a political ideology that emphasizes individual freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. However, the meaning of liberalism can vary significantly depending on the cultural, historical, and socio-economic context of a particular region. It's important to understand these differences, especially when it comes to comparing liberalism in Europe and the United States.
One of the most significant differences between liberalism in Europe and the United States is in the realm of economic policies. In the United States, liberalism is often associated with progressive social policies, such as expanding access to healthcare, education, and social welfare programs. However, American liberals may not necessarily support government intervention in the market to the same extent as their European counterparts.
In contrast, European liberals tend to be more focused on promoting economic growth and individual liberty through free-market capitalism and limited government intervention. This is not to say that European liberals are opposed to all forms of government intervention, but they generally place a greater emphasis on the role of the private sector in driving economic growth.
One example of this difference can be seen in the debate over labor market regulations. In the United States, many liberals support stronger labor protections, such as higher minimum wages and greater union representation. In Europe, however, many liberals argue that these types of regulations can hinder economic growth and create barriers to entry for small businesses.
Another area where liberalism in Europe and the United States diverges is on tax policies. Many American liberals support higher taxes on the wealthy and corporations to fund social programs, while many European liberals are more hesitant to raise taxes, arguing that it can stifle innovation and economic growth.
When it comes to social issues, liberalism in Europe and the United States can also differ in important ways. In the United States, liberalism is often associated with progressive positions on issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, and reproductive rights. European liberals may also support these positions, but they tend to be more focused on issues such as immigration, multiculturalism, and religious freedom.
One example of this difference can be seen in the debate over immigration policies. In the United States, many liberals support more open immigration policies and a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. In Europe, however, the debate over immigration is often more complex, with many liberals expressing concerns about the impact of immigration on social cohesion and national identity.
It's worth noting that these are generalizations and there is a wide range of political beliefs within both Europe and the United States. Additionally, the meaning of the term "liberal" can vary depending on the specific country and context. For example, in the United Kingdom, the term "liberal" is often associated with the Liberal Democrats, a centrist political party that supports both economic and social liberalism.
In conclusion, it's important to understand the differences between liberalism in Europe and the United States, particularly when it comes to economic policies and social issues. By recognizing these differences, we can gain a more nuanced understanding of the political landscape in both regions and engage in more informed debates and discussions.

As someone who lives in Korea, I'll offer my explanation:
South Korea is the most educated country in the world, with almost 70% of its people now passing tertiary education. Women are therefore in a position more than ever before to have their lives driven by careers. Due to the high number of people with qualifications, however, it makes jobs extremely competitive (which also has led to a brain drain as people move abroad to find work) and so people will focus hard on trying to get and maintain a job in their field. Because of this, they are working a lot and simply don't have time for dating, marriage and starting a family even if they wanted to, especially since the cultural expectation is that a woman stops working once she has a child.
Men are reacting to this by blaming it on feminism etc and thus lean more right than not. The current President was elected on the back of appealing to young men who are unable to find love and blaming that on the move away from the woman's traditional role. Because of this, in return, a lot of women are opposed to getting into relationships in general due to the prevalence of the 'Hannam' (a derogatory term for Korean Man) and the kind of misogyny spread on male social channels (messageboards with a similar kind of style to 4Chan). A lot of women are voluntarily choosing to go 'motae solo' and essentially remain celibate. The tl;dr is, well, incels vs... volcels?
Despite a lot of financial incentives to encourage marriage and childbirth, the problem is only getting worse. The social divide is not something that can be easily fixed, if it can be fixed at all.

Throughout history, women have been acknowledged as having faced harsh treatment, and rightly so to a significant extent. However, this perspective occasionally overlooks a critical aspect: until relatively recently, the fragility of life affected both genders profoundly. Men were conscripted into wars, while women faced mortal risks during childbirth, leading to the establishment of traditional gender roles. It's essential to remember that the last century has been the most peaceful in recorded history. This observation isn't meant to excuse outdated laws and gender norms but rather to provide context.
The dynamics of the feminist movement in conflict-ridden countries like Ukraine and Russia intrigue me. How does the fight for gender equality adapt in the midst of war?
I am a staunch supporter of feminism, advocating for true equality wherever possible. However, I've noticed a concerning trend of anti-male sentiment on the internet. The goal should be to celebrate our collective strengths and foster unity rather than deepen divisions.
All this underscores a troubling tendency among some politically liberal circles to cast men in a negative light, suggesting opposition to women's rights or interests. This portrayal may inadvertently push more men towards adopting views traditionally labeled as conservative or right-wing. Although I find the binary categorization of political beliefs as 'left' or 'right' overly simplistic-preferring to see politics as a sphere rather than a linear spectrum-the oversimplification contributes to the problem. It is crucial to engage in more nuanced and inclusive discussions that move beyond divisive rhetoric, recognizing the complexity of individuals' beliefs and the broader societal context

"Traditional" gender roles really aren't all that traditional, FYI. For the vast majority of history, there wasn't a ton of difference because no family could afford not to have both parents working, and the wars being fought didn't involve mass mobilisation. At this time, gender roles in regards to work done tended to be defined on a task by task basis, not in terms of overall lifestyle - sure, the woman will probably be the one making and mending clothes, but the only way she's staying home all day is if you have enough kids that they can help with the farmwork instead of her (and then she's staying home because maintaining a home with that many kids is just as much work). There are some notable exceptions where people in power have actively sought to oppress women specifically, where gender roles have been imposed, rather than being left to emerge naturally - see for example the Aztecs - but in the absence of this, gender roles prior to industrialisation really weren't that strong.
The gender roles that people tend to call traditional today only really emerged with the emergence of the leisure class, where people who swapped subsistence farming for factory and entrepreneurial work in the cities found they needed fewer children and had enough income that their wives less often needed to take up jobs like housecleaning and nannying to make ends meet. It's a very 20th century thing, this "tradition".

"The dynamics of the feminist movement in conflict-ridden countries like Ukraine and Russia intrigue me." Almost all soldiers are men and the vast majority of refugees to other countries were women. That's why the backlash against millions of refugees was smaller, because they were mainly women.
But interesting is the discussion in other European countries that either have conscription (Switzerland, Austria, Finland) or consider to re-introduce them (Germany, the UK, etc.), All those countries so far only have male conscription and even the plans to re-introduce that also face backlash once they want conscription for all. Many feminist groups claim that women are still disadvantaged and therefore they cannot be conscripted. Discussions like these show that many feminists (of course not all) do not want equality but an expansion of female privileges without equality of duties. Young men that could soon face another war in Europe might rightly see that as injustice.

With the growing rift of ideologies between men and women, how long is it going to take before we get to a point in society where the birth rate is so low due to so many people automatically disqualifying a huge portion of the population from their potential partner pool due to their differing political, moral, and ideological beliefs. basically the TLDR is, how long is it going to take for it to get so bad that nobody is having kids due to the large gap in moral beliefs between men and women. and the tribalistic us vs them mentality that may follow with the "I would never get with a person of the opposite ideology of me!" mindset.

Yeah those terms are really inappropriate for any sensible study in this day and age. They have different meanings globally (it's mostly the US that uses liberal to mean left-wing) and they don't even represent the ideological extremes of the spectrum they're measuring people on. People on the far left will vehemently disagree with being labelled "liberal". So when presented with a question that frames responses in such a binary they'll be reluctant to identify as liberal because it simply is not the correct term. This creates a significant intrinsic fault in the data because it artificially suppresses the representation of people on the left as being less radical than than they actually are.
There's a similar issue with the term "conservative". Few people identify with that label now and it also certainly doesn't represent the most extreme ends of the axis/spectrum.

Yeah self identification isn't the best way of identifying people's political views. So many people self describe as conservative simply because they like the conservative view on one issue like taxes or abortion, and ignore all the other areas that they strongly disagree with conservative views on things. IMO social issues like LGBTQ rights are a big part of why liberal self identification has gone up so much overtime, especially among the younger generations. Something like 15 years ago (back when polls gave self identified "conservatives" a 15 to 20 point lead over self identified liberals in a lot of national polls) someone did a poll where they asked people their self identification, and then listed 10 different political issues about a way array of subjects. They found that despite more people self identifying as conservative, those same people overall tended to agree with the "liberal" position on issues twice as often as the "conservative" position.

2:40 cannot argue that definitively; if the trend is pushing in both directions opposite of each other, it’s not because one single particular party is more extreme now than it was before. Based on the graphs and considering your (assumed) Anglo-British nationality you could probably make that point for the UK since BOTH trend lines follow each other while the gap still widens; but for South Korea!? Absolutely not, that has to be due a political power shift in who has the majority as well as what they stand for politically; it does seem to coincide with a series of political scandals that rocked the South Korean Government, but this still doesn’t explain that wild swing in the conservatism of men and the widening liberalization of women the graph alludes to. By your logic the explanation would be one party has essentially embraced socialism, extreme feminism, and appeasement to North Korea as a platform, for such a conservative backlash from men in particular to be so sudden and so different from women in South Korea.

  • @FilAnd01

I believe a reason why women tend to become more liberal and men more conservative is identity politics (as you said in the video). I think that especially men who do not belong to a minority feel like a lot of society’s ills gets blamed on them, and that it is seen as okay by some people to hate on men just because they’re men and of the majority ethnic group. Thus it stands to reason that if left wing parties treat men as if they are a problem, backward and barbaric, they will gravitate more toward the party or movement which accepts them. I truly think it is very damaging both for society as a whole, but also for left wing parties and movements how they shun men. I’m not an expert when it comes to countries like South Korea but I know that in the US and Europe there are people who are openly racist toward white people, and white men in particular, and that isn’t just tolerated, but even celebrated by some groups. Granted, the vast majority of society knows that it isn’t suddenly okay to be racist because it’s toward whites, but what white men see on social media is left wing and liberal people hating them simply for what they were born as, and an opposing group saying “actually it’s okay that you’re a man and it’s okay that you’re white, we care about you.” which obviously is much more appealing to white men. I’d describe myself as centre-left but as a Swedish man, I’m not going to lie and say there haven’t been times where I feel like some people further left than me have made me feel bad and guilty simply about who I am. Even though I personally haven’t done anything wrong, some people see me as a problem, just because I’m a Swedish man and not a sexual minority. I completely understand that a lot of the people who do that probably have had negative experiences or feel oppressed by society and see people like me as being in charge, but at the same time, I get really disturbed by how openly racist and sexist some people are. I refuse to be racist and sexist, but because some people have had bad experiences with people like me, I still get lumped in with white conservatives who want to ban abortion, or have my opinions disregarded because “you’re already the group in power” and that stuff really stings, and is quite dehumanising and demoralising. I think it’s important, both for conservatives and liberals, to try to be more inclusive and civil. As I said previously I’m more toward the left side of the spectrum but at the same time I feel so demoralised with mainstream left wing parties that I just don’t feel comfortable supporting them.
I know for a fact that many of my male friends feel like this, and I also know that a lot of my female friends don’t really understand that we feel like this. Quite frankly many of us aren’t really comfortable saying what I said openly because we don’t want to come off as whiny, or have our opinions disregarded with stuff like “losing privilege feels like oppression for the privileged”. By all means if anyone has something they want to add or comment on feel free and I’ll try to interact, but I ask that you please keep it civil yeah? I think, overall, this type of politics appeals more to women. Look at Tipper Gore and any other pro-censorship, or pro-Segregation movement in recent history. The strong female leaderships and overall involvement are ubiquitous.
In a way things are the same, women are moralist control freaks and men are not quite controllable.

So there wants basically dictate it all. Women will become more open and liberal and run through and men become more lonely and conservative and angry. As a gen-z man, I used to be extremely "woke" (I knew nothing about politics and nothing about economic issues but I supported social justice movements and by proxy socialist economic policies) before going to university. After university I would say I have become right wing in both social issues and economic issues. At the same time I would describe myself as "liberal".
For me, the goal of social movements is to maximize individual freedoms. Policies that give rights to one group while hurting or taking away rights of other groups is not "maximizing individual freedoms". I also believe in personal responsibility that extends to social responsibility. I realize that having a lot of money is a form of privilege which deserves to be taxed in and of itself. A big problem I have is the shameless waste of tax payer money for the top 5% of white millionaires to atone for their sins.
With that, where do I go for political representation in the UK for example? Do I support the conservatives, a party completely inept to govern, a party that divided the country with Brexit for fun, a party that hates the thought of young people affording their most important asset, their home? No! Obvious I am not going to do that. My other options are, Reform? I guess I will just vote for Labour.
What if I was a US citizen? It's Biden or Trump. I choose Biden.

Probably it has more to do with the political parties becoming MUCH more divided than they used to be. They used to be able to agree on a lot of things and make compromises, but now they just hold their ground and get nothing done unless one party has an overwhelming majority.

The graph at 7:08 is confusing - showing quite a big difference visually, while the actual scale is not given. For ref the average of the graph is meant to show 5 point divide average on the policies, which is almost within margin of error and way lower than the topical symbolic graph showing 30 point divide. so the "bars" should all be shown on 30 point scale, not 15.

I read somewhere that Sweden is the most polarized European country in this regard. Men 18-29 vote like 65% for the “conservative bloc” and SD in particular while for women 18-29 it’s the polar opposite at 65% for the “left wing bloc” with the social democrats/left party in particular.
I think the text theorized this to be a effect of Sweden being the first western country to “go woke” (I hate that term but yeah) in the late 00s/ early 2010s with a peak 2015 (that ended with the migration crisis and closed borders) and now they have entered some weird post-woke era more focused on material policies rather than identity politics. Which has shifted young men that grew up under the peak to become conservative from an early age, but also that leftists kinda think performative “Wokeness” and “PC culture” is beyond them and a bit cringe due to it being so internalized in society and therefore almost forgotten in favor of more material issues deemed more important?
Idk if this is true, but if you’re Swedish I’d like to hear if it’s true.

Add in social media and corporate media, disney especially and you get a lot of buzz words on the left and the right. The right gets a lot from Fox and podcasts that does similar stuff. I’m going out on a bit of a whim here, but hear me out. I think this divide might have to do with the simple fact that left-leaning parties have changed the way they advertise. Social Justice used to be seen as a topic mostly about the rights of workers and employees, who at that time were mostly male, while women’s suffrage was treated more as an afterthought. With the advent of a post industrial society where women have become a more integral part of the economy and also gained significantly more political influence and relevance to these parties, social justice has become more and more linked to gender and identity. Meaning that left-leaning parties and ideologies now cater to their audience by putting gender equality at the forefront of their advertising efforts, in the form of promoting more female participation in important sectors like managemant and politics and other means of affirmative action, e.g. the promotion of gender neutral language practices (this is of course more prevalent in countries where the language has more male/female differentiation mechanisms).
On the one hand, these practices have the effect of drawing more young female voters, who hope to benefit from such policies, while on the other hand many male voters feel more left out of the equation and therefore tend to look for representation of issues that they find important in more conservative circles.

We should ask what are we doing wrong on the left that we are scaring away men. I'm pretty far left so it shocked me that younger men are moving so far right.
Let's start taking men's issues seriously on left, like:
    * gender-discriminatory military conscription or draft.
    * custody courts that still churn out "shared custody" instead of "equal custody" (e.g. let's require judges to assign 50/50 custody unless there's a conviction of abuse by the mother or father, and allow their decisions to be appealed).
    * life expectancy gender gap caused by things like more dangerous work assigned by employers, more accidents due to longer commutes, higher stigma of doctors visits, and higher likelihood of being victimized by murders.
    * bodily autonomy prior to the age of consent (e.g. we should allow adult men and women to circumcise themselves if they think it has spiritual or medical benefits but not before the age of consent).
I believe the left can win back male voters by mainstreaming men's issues such as the ones above.

I think the problem starts with the definition of "liberal" and "conservative" which is very different from country to country and has changed over time. "Leftism" in the past was mainly about economics. Today "Leftism" is no longer economic but about social policies. Young men feel left out because they are not only considered to be evil and privileged, but also because most new policies favour women.
Women's issues receive a high level of political attention even if it is a minor issue (e.g. more inclusive language), while men's issues are not even discussed even if they are extremely important (e.g. declining education and high suicide rates).
Most politicians are afraid to discuss men's issue because even bringing up policies that would be beneficial to men is considered anti-feminist by many. The only politicians that are not afraid of this are the right-wing and far-right. And that drives male voters towards them even if they disagree on other issues. That's why the main parties have to also re-embrace men's issues or they will risk further damage to democracy.

As a woman, I personally would sooner suffer economics losses than side with conservatives. Liberal values gives us women more freedoms and protects the freedoms we currently already have earned hard through Women's Suffrage over the past 100+ years. Conservatives would hamper, reduce and prevent our sociological growth and freedom. Any women, in my eyes, who stands with conservatives must truly hate being a woman.. either that or they value money more than themselves.
