The cow is not a normal animal. Their excrement is antiseptic, which has baffled science forever. Cow milk is closer to human milk than any other creature too including apes. They have proved that in the science lab. These things dnt make sense unless the cow milk was designed for human by God. Vegans are generally atheists. Lacto-vegetarians are generally theists. Do you realise why? Cow milk is not a normal substance. You should research deeply into Vedic history and educate yourself.

I've been a member of the Hare Krishna community for 4 years now - and vegan for 10! I can very happily say that in the 4 years I've been going to my local temple there's been a big move from veggie to vegan. For example: all of the public events are vegan, we have vegan all you can eat nights, free vegan food for students/homeless, yoga festivals with vegan meals - the other festivals/events which are more religious ones and are attended by mostly Indian families are usually not vegan because milk and dairy are very much a part of Indian culture and it's written in the scriptures about the relationship to cows (ahimsa milk etc). Many of the western Hare Krishna monks and community members have made the switch to vegan over the past few years. Modern times are very different to ancient India - if non violence is your motto then VEGAN is the only way! Hoping more of the community joins us in the coming years :)

Yes I was born into a Hare Krishna family so born as a lacto vegetarian, and my mum dad and siblings were the same. Most of us are vegan now. I've been vegan for 5yrs. Coz I Honestly didn't realise baby calves died 4 milk. I grew up on a Hare Krishna dairy farm and they never sold or killed any cows, bulls or calves. The animals were treated amazingly, and the farm was self sufficient.. The bulls would plough the veggie fields, and if any cow would die naturally they'd use the skin to make things. It was pretty cool that I grew up to see that. And I never questioned milk as a cruel product as all the cows were friendly, happy and acted like pets to all the residents. But when I learnt about commercial farming.. I couldn't beleive the dairy industry rough housed the cows, shoved them along and beat them and killed the babies. I was like dude WTF. So I became vegan. Took me a while as I was conditioned and addicted to cheese. But yeah I realised all dairy u buy is cruelty and even in India the land of sacred cows they've lost the traditions of worshipping the cows as goddesses and they just toss the calves on the street coz they're too pussy to kill them. The ancient scenarios described in the scriptures about true cow worship, isn't being practiced. Not even by most Hindus so it's better just to eliminate dairy and avoid the cruelty.

When I told him I was vegan, and wouldn't consume that, he got offended. I was waiting to hear what you would come up with regarding this being as I used to be a Hare Krishna myself. I guess the arguments they give were what I would expect, though I was surprised to hear them justifying using milk sourced from violent modern industry. Krishna the god was of a time when the cows were loved and treated as part of the family, a different time totally, although still there are some small goshalas, where cows live and are both milked and worshipped simultaneously, according to the ways of old in India and elsewhere. But as for the industries of now, Krishna would never accept contributing in any way to the killing of his beloved cows, so the Hare Krishna's need to be transparent about this and udate their perspectives.

We are taught that the highest ideal of Shri Krishna's life is love and compassion towards other humans, animals and nature. When unrighteousness reigns, like the dairy and meat industry, it's up to us to stand up to such an evil and not partake in it. Im not a monk, just a girl who is vegan because I was taught about Shri Krishna's love. I'm heartbroken by these apparent monks. Thank you for your activism. ( today also my n my friends relatives in countryside are farmers n they own cows n buffalows n they treat them just as their family member n no less than that , they r taken care of their whole life till they die naturally , as it is the case in most of India although not 100% , some poor farmer do tend to sell them ) ..... HENCE. , dairy is not considered as cruel n it's linked to spirituality ,
BUT IMO especially in the west , we all know how horrible is the dairy industry , Lord Krishna would also won't like dairy of such horror of recent times . I think Veganism is the best option of this time. In the past our relationship with cows and other milk animals was based more on symbiosis, they were not locked in cages, and were having decent existence.
I respect veganism, I have stopped eating meat, but in nature existence is everything, all good and bad emotions exist just to keep you alive. A cow produce much more milk than the calf need, you can impregnate a cow with only female spermatozoids so that you wont have unneeded males, you can have farms where cows go outside, as some farm here practice even today.
My point is you can have milk with much less suffering than what you have in nature, and that the relationship with cows can be very good.
Also artificial insemination is not a rape, rape exist in humans, it is the panic of a woman to have the baby of a unwanted male who wont help with raising that kid, cows dont have this in they psyhology, sticking your hand for a short time in the cow wont provide even a 1% of the panic that will unfold in raping a human...
Sometimes veganism is indeed something like a religion, true nature works in a different way, you have to suffer a little bit in order to exist, nothing in nature is 100% "suffer free", that is the truth...
If you have a relationship with an animal species that is more love and less suffering than the average level in nature, then how exactly it is bad?
Also lets be realists, if everyone stop consuming milk then what will happen with cows? How many cows there will be?
They cant live in nature and they are expensive pets, reality is that you will have just few in the zoos and few other places, 99.99% of cow population will go extinct.
Does the cows will be "happy" with that scenario?

I'm a vegan and have a Hindu background as well. It's obviously clear that the modern dairy industry is absolutely cruel in all aspects which is why I don't support it. However, in many rural areas of India, cows are like pets, and the family only drinks the milk of their own cow. The cows aren't artificially inseminated and when the calf is born, it is allowed to take all the milk it needs. Only then does the family drink the remaining milk. While some may say it's exploitative, it's really a symbiotic relationship where the cows are showered with love and care like a family member in return for the last bit of it's milk. If that excess milk isn't milked, the cows are usually in pain.
Btw love your work and activism.

I'm a Hare Krishna, actually my whole family is. And most of us have turned vegan (or are leaning that way) prior to being lacto vegetarian.. Bcoz of the calf deaths & torture dairy cow's go thru. We live inline with that "selflessness" the monk talk of. It was a tradition in Hinduism to worship cows & use milk as a sacred magical product. Back thousands of yrs ago Hindu scriptures wrote about cows being massaged with expensive oils, worshipped, wearing gold necklaces & treated like royalty. Never killed, never beaten. It was the highest sin to be cruel to a cow as they were seen as goddesses of the earth. But these days the culture is not like that. Not even in India. They just use and abuse them for their milk. So like all cultures. I think Hare Krishna and Hindus need a reform of their misconceptions about milk instead of turning a blind eye and pretending it's still like the good old scriptural days..
