I recently heard this argument from Arvind animal activist: if I say this plant has kidney stones you would ask well where is the kidney of the plant! If I say this plant has heart disease you will ask where is the heart. So when you say this plant can feel pain and touch I will ask where is the brain and central nervous system of this plant!
If there is a house on fire and firefighters goes in to get your dog but couldn't get the dog instead get a watermelon and say oh I saved this watermelon and it has countless seeds in it which are living or potential living beings you would scold the firefighters!

    • @cloudoftime

It's not a great argument. This assumes that people understand everything already, and that there is no alternative form of experience, and it's based an assumed axioms of empiricism. If that's what you want to go with, and you want to put the benefit of the doubt where you like based on that, good for you.

The counter argument to ''if plants are proven to be sentient'', along with killing more plants to feed animals, is that we HAVE to eat plants to survive and be healthy, we don't have to eat animals. We can justify eating animals in a survival situation, so eating plants is justified because we need them, otherwise we die. So we draw the line at animals. Animals who have a brain, think, and avoid pain just like humans, because we are animals too of course.

The limit to your freedom of choice is obviously if you're doing harm to others. So veganism and libertarianism makes perfect sense.

We have to overcome our nature to achieve our potential.
The climate is getting to the point that we need to do so soon to preserve the world as we know it.

Just imagine supplanting that 'great life, looked after, one bad day' argument to humans - someone kidnaps a child, keeps them well-fed and clothed for years, with the intention of killing them when they reach maturity. Would there be any defence of this?! It's madness (and sociopathic!)

The plants having sentience argument is easily refuted because plants provide seeds, berries, fruits, nuts etc etc for animals to eat, in order for them to spread seeds, this is why they are nutritious, colourful and tasty to animals! If someone says a tomato plant feels pain, I would simply explain that i'm not eating the tomato plant but the fruit it has grown in order for it to be naturally and PURPOSELY eaten by animals. This is how plants spread their genetics/seeds. Through evolution the these plants have purposely made their seed carrying entities tasty and nutritious, it doesn't taste and look nice by mistake !

9:54 Jainism doesn't say all life is equal, they have five categories of living beings, based on their senses and capacity to feel and suffer, where humans and other mammals are higher up than for example insects. Plants are in the lowest category and are okay to kill if needed but should be avoided if possible. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I read on Wikipedia... :)
