It's 1975. Just graduated from high school in May of that year. I was playing this tune and Fox on the radio in southern Louisiana! How great it would be to go back, even for a little while...
I was a year behind you and picked up the LP for Christmas 1975 listened to it about 400 times !!! I was dating a Jamaican girl for a while in the 2016’s
I've always liked this song from the first time I've heard it, but lately I've really learned to appreciate that there is nothing like it, and it is awesome, just trying to figure out the layering of the Wall of Sound is a challenge, and all the different instruments and the effects on them, such imagination. Thank you Elton.
EJ waits till the band is ready and on point,,, then records some boss shit. yes it is confusing but they put the drums , bass , percussion on one track , the back up vocals on another , and then EJ
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG!! One of my EJ favs. A lot of people have forgotten this classic - but those of us who love it have not. Takes me back to when I was young - the good ol' days. Thanks for posting.
I woke up with the urge to listen to this song. Elton John is a mega musical super star he's been an icon in my eyes just like Thel Jacksons to me both meant a lot to the musical world.
Happy 74th Birthday.. Reginald Kenneth Dwight; 25 March 1947. For many of us.. The candle in the wind.. You are our candle.. Of hope.. I thank the maker for making.. You.... I live in Waikiki.. Island girls are my favorite...
I was 7 years old in 1975 and listening to this, I could only make out certain phrases, of course, I got 'Island Girl', but everything else he sang I could not understand. I knew some of Elton John's songs but, at my age and at that time, it was just another artist who came out with a catchy song/music.
I was 9 when this was released. I remember hearing it and immediately liking it. Those opening notes drew me in. And the lyrics may have been above my head at some points, but the music captivated me.
gail brown In High School a Teacher got Allman Brothers to come to Buffalo, NY to play for us. Get this it was a Catholic School. Lynyrd Skynyrd also came to Buffalo. Rolling Stones played here 6 times, Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger Bad Company. I thought it funny almost every band opened saying HELLO BUFFALO
I've been looking for this song for a far as I can remember! My dad had this on a cassette in the 80s when I was little,, then I heard it randomly on a bus in the 90s and never knew who it was until now! Now I can rest 😊
He has so many great songs and this is without a doubt one of them. I can listen to this song today and still enjoy it as much as I did when it first came out.
I remember this song very well even though I was probably about 4 years old when I was released. My mom had the 45 rpm record of it. She had quite a vinyl collection.
My best male friend has lived with his sweet little Philipino girlfriend for 7 years now and I call her my little island girl.....she is a real trouper.....I have walked in malls with my arm over her to tell the world she is my friend because I have heard young white people especially tell her to go home. Makes me ashamed to be white. She earns min. wage and works her butt off yet sends money home to her family. We have so much to learn from each other. I live in Kingston Ontario.
I love this song. I had such a crush on a gal from Winona Lake. Of course she had no idea I was even alive, but in my mind this was our song. Oh to be young again!
I LOVE this song I was about 5 or 6 when this song came out. I remember hearing it on the radio and my mom bought the record (tells you how old I am) I love the song back then and I still do today as well. Thanks for posting
i have a wonderful friend off the south east coast of africa and always think of this song whenever we talk. it'd be cool to see this song done to a montage of pics of island girls - from many islands around the world!
Don't care about the lyrics, myself. Other than "Island Girl", as it fits perfectly to start each chorus. This is a fun song,,,, foot-tappin' kick-ass music. That's why I listen!!
Island girls, that Suze who wore her dresses tight, his wife from "Rocket Man". Quite the ladies man, I'd say. His head that went bald in the 70's and magically re-appeared in the 90's? Boy, I'll tell ya...that Elton is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
@SupernalOne Hey SupernalOne, I was born into a Catholic home, split my early childhood in a Lutheran church as an altar boy, was baptized in a Baptist church and now attend a Free Methodist church. Our pastorial staff is amazing and we believe in "loving people where they're at". Too many people sit and judge others when they should be judging themselves. I always joke about kicking out all the sinners from church... all you'd have is an empty building.
I had to look up " Island Girl" . Waking up in a Hospital ward late 70's when I was 11 They played the radio to all the kids in there and this was the first one I heard.....
Ignorance is bliss - i was in elementary school in the 70’s and my Mother had taught me my times tables 1-12 in the 1st grade because i always walked around singing. One of my favorite songs to walk around and sing was “Island Girl”..... lol..... of course i had no idea what it meant. My Mom so wanted me to sing something else so she bribed me with money to sing my times tables into a shoe box tape recorder. I still love the song today, it’s a lot of fun to play on the drum kit.
I always thought he said, "I'm a girl." and I didn't know it was Elton John. I just found it hilarious when he hits that high one. That parts still funny tho.

This song brings back a lot of memories. When it came out I had a 67 GTO and was banging a 5'2" hundred pounder. Some time later she totaled it. I miss that car.
I love this song. Remember when I first heard it, thought it was "I Like Girls"...and resonated with me that way....now I like it still, glad I know the lyrics better (also, thought it was "save her from the wrecking ball" at one time) And what's that instrument during the solo....sounds like a musical saw or Theremin!
I was 6 and LOVING music when this came out. The 70's were the BEST for music of many varieties. This had it all - every aspect is amazing. I was so lucky to hear it first hand when it was new... radio was awesome then! I still find myself daydreaming when I hear this. This takes me back to 1976. Elton is one of the greatest and the 70's belonged to him.
There's about 50 other acts from the 70s that would challenge that.
The song is from 78

Congrats on a meaningless number.
But Bernie Taupin will be forgotten obviously?? Who?? The guy who wrote the song for Elton.
Elton should run for President

Elton John had a GREAT band around him for this song. The band is 80% of the greatness of this song. It sounds Carribean or Polynesian. Take a trip!
This band lineup was a lot more hard rockish than the other previous lineup.
This song was number one on the charts the day I was born
November 13, 1975
I like it even if it’s not my favourite Elton John song

One of Elton’s most underrated tunes.
Absolutely
It also hit #1
It was a #1 hit back in the 1970s they played it constantly on the radio 😂
@Kblog777 Not underrated at all. It was a number one hit back in the day. All summer long it was played on the radio. Big big hit.

we did it right, we baby boomers know music. Gen Z, they don't know squat when they hear today's music.

great song, and so underrated, one of his best.

Mid 60's to mid 70's was the best. Early 60's was lame, and so was most of late 70's
Indeed
50s-60s-70s were Fantastic. 80s were good for a time then all went to Hell thereafter. Musicians took the easy way to millions, and sold out.
