This is gonna save me so much time ordering all the things I need to make the perfect BMPCC4K rig. Was waiting for this exact video from you man, thanks for knocking it out of the park as always. If my wife asks the total price was $240 and I was able to use my Canadian Tire money
I am a stills photographer mainly and when I do video prefer to use a video camera rather than a DSLR/Mirrorless bodies which ergonomically are not ideal and end up having to be mounted in rigs with numerous attachments before they become functional. In terms of value and function even on this side of the Pond, the Pocket 4K is great value for money and this episode by you the King of All Things Purple showing the choices you made on kitting out this camera is really interesting in terms of addons and costs.
98wh batteries are totally the way to go. You get that sense of relief when you can just keep shooting especially on longer days. Equivalent to that feeling I got the one project I used a 2tb samsung t5 to record with... It just... keeps... going! Glad Portapak is willing to be flexible on cable offerings especially when marketing to the pocket shooter crowds. Kudos to them. I've been looking into vmount battery options like FX Lion, blueshape, core swx and anton bauer. Nice to see other solutions also. Btw you should do a video on how you manage your media. Would be interested in seeing whether you archive your show content or once you finish your edits and upload to RUclips, let it transition into the digiverse in the sky. NEXT VIDEO: "Carry on my Undone Son"
This was perfect for me: I have the 4k but have not fitted it out yet; may not need all you have, but at least I know a great combo that works! Thanks, heaps!
Damn, I just bought and rigged out my bmpcc 4k. They had it with the cage, t5 mount, side clamp, and optical cleaning kit for $1369, Lanparte vmount plate $165, juicebox 150Wh vmount $179, t5 $189, moza air 2 $449, nikon speedbooster $389, sigma 30mm dx $150, nikon 50mm f2 $50, slr magic 8mm $149, atomos shinobi $299, camvate shoulder rig $239, 2 led lights with stands and power $125, npf batteries $60, ikan manual FF $250, plus a few other thing about $300. $4362 and I went all out but made sure to find the best bang for buck. Glad I didn't give in a year ago and waited to upgrade.
A little delayed here, but the one thing you're missing in your links is the rod clamp quick release baseplate. I can't seem to find it anywhere, but it's exactly what I'm looking for!
I would recommend that when you want to plug ssd back unscrew the cable place ssd plug the cable and tighten everything together. When you tighten the ssd and or cable it pushes it slightly downwards so if you keep the cable tight and try to plug ssd it might damage the port.
Gerald, thanks for mentioning the Porta Pak power alternative. I'm considering this for some documentary work and wanting to go as "stripped down" as possible. Being able to mount the camera on top of the battery will really help reduce bulk and create even cleaner and quicker access to the back monitor. Thanks for always providing such thoughtful content.
I love that the Ikan follow focus system has internal batteries. I hate that I need to connect the Tilta nano to a power source. Glad to see someone finally mount the v-mount battery flat so it doesn’t block the screen. Just found your channel and giving it a sub! One thing about keeping the battery in the camera, the v-mount will charge the battery inside the camera will it’s running. So let’s say you need to go lightweight for a bit...you drain the crappy canon battery in 20 minutes (lol) and then go back to your rig...charges the Battery :)
Great build! I hope we're going to get a video on your workflow, what recording looks like for you and how you're using BRAW to change native settings in post. My pockets are full of batteries waiting.
After watching all rigs, this is by far the best, an exception would be if you want a more minimalist approach which i would recommend the one by james matthews
Very useful information about 1TB recording three hours at Q0. Someone said on 128GB one can record 3 minutes at highest frame rate. I thought i needed to buy lots of storage media
Was wondering if you've heard about or messed around with the ZCam E2? I've been using it for the past 6 months and have fallen in love with it. I was using a RED Scarlet MX and have completely replaced it in my workflow with the E2. I tried the Pocket 4k, but ended up being slightly dissapointed by it. Not in terms of image quality necessarily, but in build quality, battery life, and form factor. The E2 has almost the exact same sensor in it as the Pocket, but they use a better processor squeezing out a lot of functionality/performance. For $2000 you're getting 4k up to 160fps at 10bit, 13 stops of dynamic range (16 in WDR mode), 300mbps max bitrate, all metal body, uses NPF batteries, CFast or external SSD, WiFi, and imo a much better form factor. Would definitely be something interesting to check out. I'm loving the image out of it, the 10bit high frame-rate capabilities are great for versatility, and I'm getting about 4 hours of battery life on a single npf970 shooting at 4k.
Hi Gerald, ive read it is not advised to have the lpe6 inside when running an external battery. In a FB group i have someone give me this reaseon: "It is right. You should not have a battery inserted in the camera, while using an external 12V. The reason is that the control and load circuit of the LP06 has a fairly high consumption, between 4 and 8 w, which is subtracted from what the camera needs to operate. Therefore, you would have to supply about 22 Watts for the camera, and with the energy expenditure of the LP06 inserted, it could reach or exceed 30 watts. With a dummy battery, the external one should only provide the power equal to the LP06, without activating charging circuits." Any thoughts on this?
Love your rig bro. I'm doing weddings and I was looking into quick options to release the rig and put the camera on a gimbal really fast. Thank you! Right now I have the Panasonic Lumix G85, I'm gonna upgrade to the GH5 and rig that out. Then once my business is making more money, I'm gonna get the Pocket 4K
This is so similar to how I rigged my P4K. The parts are a little different but the gist is the same. Have you noticed that the M43 sensor in the P4k is a little wider than the GH5? Is it the same sensor as the GH5s? I think the GH5s is the same. Do you know? Oh, and thanks for the idea about keeping a battery in the battery compartment. I hadn't thought of that - brilliant!!!
Dude, such a great video! Very smart build out of the pocket 4k. This would be required watching for all new Pocket 4K owners! As always, Gerald, love your work, brother! Next intro, "... Negative, I am a meat popsicle"
Apparently not. I assume because the size of the battery? It appears I can get it from the actual indiepro store but shipping is pretty painful. I'll need to weigh my options
Great setup. But it's interesting how different setups can be and how easy it is to find the own setup. I started with Smallrig - which is really really good for reasonable money - but switched to Tilta and their tactical setup - even better, nice accessories and better cable management. And I need a run&gun setup which is smaller than yours. So Tilta tactical rig with nice solid grip, awesome ssd holder (I use the 2 TB version of the T5), monitor shades, external monitor (I have a 5" Blackmagic Video Assist - so I use it), core SWX battery solution mounted under the cage for powering camera and monitor. I get around 2.5 to 3 hrs of recording time. Another SWX battery - just to be on the save side - replacement within seconds. VERY happe with this setup. Weight is good for shooting but not to heavy.
The P4K is a really awesome piece of kit. It’s only major downside is the battery life. You pretty much have to use v-mount batteries. Which increases the weight and form factory. I wish they would add SSD recording or ProRes Raw via HDMI to Atomos for the GH5S 😭
For some people the increased weight is welcome because it helps stabilize and dampen movements. It looks like the balance on this rig would be right at the handle, so getting some smooth handheld movement without the aid of a gimbal or stabilizer should be possible.
Question: I've heard mixed information about this but the metabones Ultra is designed for "Super 35" magnification with lenses for those kind of sensors or larger. The Sigma 18-35 is cropped for Canon APS-C which is smaller than the Super 35. Would this mean vignetting will still occur with the Ultra, despite people telling me there is only vignetting on the XL, or am I missing another variable? You're the man! Thanks.
You should get a hot mount for the monitor. It's like a bicycle wheel bolt. You flip it up and can readjust the monitor or take it off. Makes it faster
Hey Gerald! Since you love doing your research when creating this kind of videos, and seeing how you connected both the camera and the monitor to the same Vmount battery. What are your thoughts on the "ground loop" issue that may occur by powering your monitor and the camera with the same battery (some have reported that this setup has fried the HDMI and I'm a little afraid that it might happen to me as well if I do this).
Its a cinema camera it's supposed to be modular meaning you buy the brain and choose the rest of the parts. If you were expecting an all in one camera experience I recommend buying a high end camcorder.
Great build out Gerald! I’m still on the fence about which way I’m going to go and I have to put the BM back in the running after checking this out. Thanks for making my life more confusing now ;)
Gerald Undone One of your viewers below in the main comments asked if you had considered the Z-CAM E2 and I confess I’d not come across that to date in all the research I’ve been doing on cine-cam options. So I did a little homework last night and discovered what may be the best little gadget I’ve seen, particularly at the price point. You should have a look if you’ve not done so already and of course, a review from you on this E2 or even the E2-F6 would be highly valued if you can swing it. A young filmmaker, Scott Dumas, has done a decent job on an overview I caught last night but I’m sure you would take it to another level. Food for thought.
I read that BM does not recommend keeping a battery inside the camera while using 12V input as it could damage the internal components, what would be your thoughts about it ?
Great rig! You and I are using many of the same components. Two questions: 1) Have you worked through the challenge of using a VND and adding a lens hood. I use the Syrp and B+W 82mm VNDs on my Lumix 12-35 and 35-100 lenses, then screw on a collapsible rubber lens hood into the female threads of the filter. The round hood allows consistent shading when rotating the VND, as opposed to a tulip or rectangular shade. But, I get some vignetting in the corners from the hood, at wider angles. Do you have any better solutions? 2) As an alternative, I've okie engineered a couple 4x4 plates to hold both sides of my VND in my matte box. Then one of the filter trays rotates to adjust density. My end product is a bit janky, but with enough fiddling, it works. Have you seen a manufactured product that allows round 82mm filters to be used in a 4x4 matte box filter tray? Bonus question: Aputure has a couple DEC products that look like PHENOMENAL solutions. BUT...one is a speed booster that gives full control of a Canon lens (focus, iris, etc), but no eVND. The other is an eVND, but no speed boosting. Do you know of any combined solutions? An amalgamation of both products? Or maybe a drop-in speed boosting lens that can be used with the eVND?
If you're low on money, you could get Camvate and other cheap cages and mounts (instead of SmallRig); The Tilta Nucleus Nano costs less than $200, but I don't know if it's as good as the ikan follow focus system. You can save $500 by getting the Viltrox EF-M2 (actually 0.68x) instead of the Metabones (overpriced). The Sigma 18-35mm is often on sale, or you could buy a cheaper lens. And there are dozens of monitors full of different features between $100 and $200, not as good as Atomos monitors, but still worth it...
Indi Mogul and Interviews and this is super juicy knowledge. I got a problem, I am becoming a gear head. Coming from custom loop PCs background this camera is making me hungry for builds. Il stick some RGB on it.... jokin mate asif I'd do that
The mount of the monitor and the focus wheel is ingenous, but i miss the description of what parts you used to do this. Seems like you start with a Smallrig BSE2431, then a DJI RS-004? And from then...what are those?
It might be a silly question, but you mentioned adding a swing Matte Box or clamp-on Matte Box, but from this video with your lens, the rail rods don't seem to be long enough. Are they? Can you slide them out further? What length of rods would you recommend if a future Matte Box purchase seems likely to sit in front?
Great Video! I have the SHINOBI and was confused how to match what I am seeing off of the BM4k. If BM4k, looks dark and lets say ISO was set really low, but the SHINOBI is bright and looks great, how do you make sure they are correct so you don't start filming and realize while in post your image was incorrect during your whole shoot? Thanks!
I can't believe it. At 1:18 you disconnect the T5 in a way I'd not thought of. I had been unscrewing the USB cable connector and plugging a long USB lead into the T5 in situ. Your way is so much better as I don't have to get a screwdriver out each time.
I should add that I'm using Tilta cage, T5 mount and USB lead. The Tilta USB lead can be secured at both ends using the provided slotted knurled screw, but the knurling is a bit pointless as it sits close by the USB connector body (they should have made it longer). Hence I have to get out a flat bladed screwdriver.
I think you don't get a 24mm - 48mm but a 15mm - 30mm because the sigma is an APS-C lens. The crop factor for a APS-C lens on the BMPCC 4k sensor is 1.17 and not 1.9 which applies only to full frame lenses. So the math for that would be 18mm x 1.17 x 0.71 = 15mm and 35mm x 1.17 x 0.71 = 30mm. That would also explain the vignetting you get when you're at the lens widest setting. The vignetting goes away when you're at around 22mm because then you'll get an equivalent of about 18mm which will then cover the size of the cameras sensor.
Ey, Gerald. Great info as always! Just a suggestion: you could have a song of some kind at the end of your videos while you're saying your standard closing remarks, StraightPipes style. I think it'll help inspire viewers to click on something else of yours. As you're a musician, I imagine this wouldn't be too costly. Cheers!
Great stuff. How is the ikan pdl-af mounted to the cage, it's not easy to see in the video. I have a Sony A7rIII in a SmallRig half-cage but use a manual follow focus that easily attaches to the rails. I like the idea of this and having it attached to the cage for run and gun.
I love your videos. Could you do a video on how sony cameras do in rough weather. Rain, snow, high humidity. I think this video is missing on youtube! :-)
@@geraldundone I had wondered about this, too. It appears I would need to have both if I have full-frame and APS-C lenses and want to limit the crop factor.
It looks like you removed the two bottom port covers/doors on the left side of the camera. How did you do this? They are annoyingly in the way. It looks like maybe the panel around the ports can be removed, but I didn't want to mess anything up or void the warranty. Great video. Thanks for the info.
I wish SmallRig made the a MBSB support for the Nikon-2-MFT variant. I'm having trouble with the rig lacking rigidity in my GH5s rig setup that could be easily remedied if I could secure it further at the lens adapter.
Glad to see other RUclipsrs embracing the IndiPro Tools solution!

I prefer the Meike lenses over the Sigma. T2.2 in a native format with no need for the speedbooster.
Interesting idea!
Hey Gerald! Since you love doing your research when creating this kind of videos, and seeing how you connected both the camera and the monitor to the same Vmount battery. What are your thoughts on the "ground loop" issue that may occur by powering your monitor and the camera with the same battery (some have reported that this setup has fried the HDMI and I'm a little afraid that it might happen to me as well if I do this).
i was wondering the same thing!
Video idea: long term storage solutions for video / photos. Anything from small, cheap amateur setups to large pro setups.
Thanks for the suggestion! 😃
This was AWESOME!!!
Dear Black Magic, I think some accessory consolidation is in order.
In other words, the next model needs to have some of this stuff built in/on.
Its a cinema camera it's supposed to be modular meaning you buy the brain and choose the rest of the parts. If you were expecting an all in one camera experience I recommend buying a high end camcorder.
OMG I'm so glad you escaped from that closet your captor trapped you in 😂
😃👍
Great build out Gerald! I’m still on the fence about which way I’m going to go and I have to put the BM back in the running after checking this out. Thanks for making my life more confusing now ;)
Haha. You're welcome, Reginald! My pleasure. 😃😂
Great video!
Thank you! 😃🙏
Yeah, i hit subscribe every time.
Indi Mogul and Interviews and this is super juicy knowledge. I got a problem, I am becoming a gear head. Coming from custom loop PCs background this camera is making me hungry for builds. Il stick some RGB on it....
jokin mate asif I'd do that
😜👌
The mount of the monitor and the focus wheel is ingenous, but i miss the description of what parts you used to do this. Seems like you start with a Smallrig BSE2431, then a DJI RS-004? And from then...what are those?
I've been trying to figure it out too. I'm pretty sure he's using this as a rod holder: store.dji.com/product/ronin-s-focus-motor-rod-mount
Great video, loving the power option advice, and the follow focus looks cool.
The polar pro basecamp matte box would set that rig off a treat!
Next intro "I like to mess with audio in DSLR video shooter's new studio"
can you link the smaller accessories and adapters too?
justinhammond same please!!!
Cheers!
I used to have something like that. I suppose I could look into doing it again! Haha. Thanks for the suggestion. 😃
Well then, it's hardly my idea at all. I'm just a time capsule carrying a message from past Gerald. :D
Thanks for the suggestion! 😃
Great video! Why did you opt for the .71x over the .64x metabones?
Thanks! Because the Sigma 18-35mm is an APS-C lens, so it's better suited for 0.71, as the 0.64x has some vignetting.
Hey! Thanks. They just use a rubber-t-shape to keep them in. If you pull gently close to the hole with pliers they come out without damage.
I wish SmallRig made the a MBSB support for the Nikon-2-MFT variant. I'm having trouble with the rig lacking rigidity in my GH5s rig setup that could be easily remedied if I could secure it further at the lens adapter.
