  • In this video, I wanted to build my RED Komodo 6K camera rig/setup with you. I have done quite a bit of research and binged a ton of other rig build videos on the Komodo (I really geek out about this stuff sometimes). I feel that my build has a good balance between cost and functionality. Included in the video will be some RED footage along with my honest thoughts as a freelance filmmaker who started out with an A7III.

However, after doing much research, I still believe that SmallRig offers some great quality products if you are trying to build out a full rig without spending too much $$$.

    As someone who's still very green to the high-end professional video project side of things, I really appreciated your personal development as a photographer/filmmaker. I started taking paid gigs with the A7iii and now using the Canon R5 I feel a bit stagnant with my skillset which has me thinking about cameras like the C70. To someone who's never really worked with a pro-level camera and worked with mirrorless it can be daunting, but getting out of my comfort zone and doing something like renting these types of cameras to practice with is something I'm definitely considering as I continue to grow my own brand/business this year. Always love your videos Ed!

      Thanks Scott. Really appreciate the support! I completely can relate to your situation. What probably doesn't get talked about enough is how so many creators are using photo cameras to shoot video. Once you get a designated video camera, it really shifts your perspective in how you approach client work. Definitely would try renting a few cameras before committing to one! The C70 and Komodo are two very different cameras and if you're coming from an R5, you might really like the C70

    • @RandersonMedia
      @RandersonMedia Год назад

      I did that exact same thing. I have a c70 and a r5 for photo. Game …. Changer….
      Some advice is look into all the accessories too before buying it. Aka battery situation.
      Oh and the image quality is legit next level.

    Honestly the last part was the main reason I watched this video. Simply because I don't own a RED ;) But I really loved how you described your journey to own a RED with your older cameas. I think that these are one of the most reasons people watch content like this because they need the business parts of these videos. So I'd love to see you making more business type videos. Even if you and Paul are covering most of these things on MIDCONVO, dedicated scriped videos on special topics would be awesome!!!

    I agree that getting out of your comfort zone allows you to grow and develop your skills in both personal and professional aspects of life. Owning equipment that reduces the amount of friction that you have on production is super important, but I also believe that there's the right too for the right job.
    There's definitely been times where I've been on a productions where there's been budget for a cinema camera, but have gone with something more solo operator friendly as the job has turned out to be more of a run and gun situation.

Still shoot a lot of personal work with the a7iii because of the convenient form factor but learning manual focus and all the manual controls on the BMPCC is a great change of pace and also allowed me to progress my skills a lot more. Hopefully will be moving up to higher end cameras soon! Great video!

    • @edwardleefilms
      @edwardleefilms  Год назад +2

      It sort of depends. If I am using my Komodo with a simple lens kit that I already own, there are many times where I won't charge for the gear. But if it's a bigger project and different lenses or kit need to be rented, I will charge the client for the rentals. I let them know that in order to pull off the look they want, we will need additional camera gear. I find out what production value they are looking for by asking for any reference videos

    Hey Edward! Nice video! Currently I’m in the phase “5000$ - 20000$” project, but still shooting with a Sony a7IV and looking around to jump into the cinema cameras world.
    I have the chance to get a C70 for almost 4K$. A Komodo would be a better solution, but it costs also more (in Italy is around 7K, kinda double).
    I would love to know more about the C70. Do you have a video where you talk about it?

    • @edwardleefilms
      @edwardleefilms  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Alessandro! The C70 is a great camera but it was too close in territory to what my Sony FX3 does for me. So I opted to sell it and get something more cinema ready like the Komodo. For the C70, I didn't really like how it color graded and I found the CLOG color profile harder to correct than RED or BRAW. I think if you need convenience, AF, and a flip out screen -- the C70 is a good choice. But if you are looking for something to grow into and rig out, I personally just prefer the Komodo or even Black Magic

    • @edwardleefilms
      @edwardleefilms  3 месяца назад

      Hey Francesco! I think the Komodo is still an amazing camera. I still use it on my higher budget shoots. I will say in comparison to the BMPCC, it's not a crazy step up. I think BMPCC punches way above its weight for the price. I often even miss my pocket cam. However the RED is much more notable on set, its much easier to rig up (or down), and I prefer the R3D files that come out of the red camera. With that being said, if you want a cinema camera that you can grow into and plan to work towards larger teams, sets, or gear. The Komodo is great. If you plan to be a solo shooter and just want a good image -- I'd save your money and stick with the BMPCC.

    Hey Edward. Watched your x100v video and just want to say I really like you’re filmmaking style. The intro with the strings was absolutely excellent in terms of footage, aesthetic, and editing; specifically the AV timing.
    Context:
    Lately, I’ve been making an effort to compliment someone once a day, who deserves it. Key word; deserves. What I’m saying is this isn’t empty or altruistic. I really enjoyed it and connected with your style. Typically many of us don’t hear a positive comment from anyone, even when its clearly deserved. I invite you to try it, and push through the discomfort of recognizing the abilities of those around is. It’s been very rewarding. And no, this isn’t some copy and paste “chain mail” haha.
    So, Best of luck going forward as a filmmaker. I wish you lots of success. You clearly have a real talent, coupled with an ability to weave many layers of a story for your audience. I see talent in you. Nurture it. Keep working.
    Take Care,
    G.

    Edward, great video, as I’m building out my Komodo very similar to your build. I have a question on the SmallRig top handle. Did you purchase the 35mm or 48mm nato rail? How does the nato rail mount to the top handle? Also, it looks like SmallRig has recently upgraded to a slightly newer monitor mount, replacing the mount you used. They appear almost identical to me.

    • @edwardleefilms
      @edwardleefilms  Год назад +1

      Hi Gary! I purchased the 48mm nato rail and it comes with a screw that just mounts directly on the top handle itself. The the nato monitor mount onto the 48mm rail. If they make a newer one I’d go with that! As long as it swivels and tilts you should be good 👍🏼

      Thanks. Also, it looks like the SmallRig top handle hangs over a bit on the Outrigger handle on the opposite side of the handle. Is this the case? If so, I would have hoped that they would have lined up better.

    • @edwardleefilms
      @edwardleefilms  Год назад +1

      I think the Komodo is better than the C70 but not necessarily just on specs. For some reason, I had to work extra hard to get the C70 CLOG footage to look the way I wanted. The window for mistakes or not exposing correctly was much smaller. Whereas with the Komodo, I find myself being less worried in post because the R3D files edit so nicely. I know you can shoot RAW on the C70 too but with that camera, I never thought the extra data it required was worth it

      There is probably a ton of different ways to answer your question but one practical tip that really helped me early on:
      Look at the people you think are "succeeding" in the content creation business. Study their videos and reverse engineer their tactics (edits, pacing, cuts, color). Then continue to stack your new work next to theirs until you get to a point where you can confidently say that you are at the same quality.
      I did this early on and was just always brutally honest with myself. I still am and this has caused some perfectionism in certain areas but overall I think it's helped me in the long run

I pitched them on $60K per year. They didn’t blink. You can have the portfolio all day, but you gotta get in the trenches and help people out in their businesses first. Hi Edward. I’m highly considering moving to the Core Gold Mount plate and batteries like you did. How has your experience been, now that you have had your setup a while? I already have the SmallHD Indie 7, so I would power it just like you do. Would you still recommend your G-Mount plate and batteries? And can you confirm that your battery level shows up correctly on the Komodo/Indie 7?

    • @edwardleefilms
      @edwardleefilms  Год назад

      Awesome question! I'm overall 8/10 satisfied with the GM Core Plate. There is a very slight wiggle/play if you move the plate up and down. Not enough to disconnect the camera but if you are nit picky about small play room on things, this is definitely a thing. But for the price bundled with the GM batteries Core offers, it was a great deal still imo. I also like how seamless it integrates without any overheating and proper battery readouts. It's also RED approved which gives you an extra piece of mind. If you need something super snug fit, I was initially looking at the Bebob Cocomodo Plate

      Hi Edward. I received my Core Gold Mount plate today, and luckily it fits very snugly on my Komodo with no movement. So far, I’m very happy with the so,Union. My lemo cable arrives tomorrow to power my Indie 7 monitor off of the plate. 👍

    Spending $1900 on a monitor and cable so you can control the camera on a bigger screen, and then realizing that using RED Control app on your phone does all the exact same things. (and even way more customizable if you spend the time with it) And no need for cables or powering.
    Sure, it doesn't work 100% of the time, but it doesn't require a $500 cable to work, either. That's a tough pill to swallow for a cable that definitely won't work forever because it's a cable. Also also, how do you run timecode if that cable is taking up the 9 pin? Is there a different solution?
