The distinction between the original and "unoriginal" versions: The Weeknd released his three mixtapes in 2011 for free download. After he signed to his label, they re-released those as his album Trilogy, and the changes made were that the songs were remastered and some of the samples didn't clear, so they were excluded. Now, on the respective 10-year anniversaries of each tape, he's been re-releasing the original versions of the mixtapes, because he got the samples to clear now.
the "remastered" versions where just more clean sounding but lost all the rough and raw appeal of the OG versions. Echoes of Silence was the only exemption, but House of Ballons and Thursday sounded better on the mixtapes.
The Weeknd actually has gotten inspiration from portishead. His song Belong to the World from his album Kiss Land samples portishead. I think the sample is from Machine Gun or something along those lines.
You were right on with all your comparisons! The Weeknd said that Portishead influenced a lot of Trilogy. It borrows a lot from the trip hop movements in the 90s. I love how The Weeknd was able to borrow so much from movements in the 80s and 90s and still make something that will appeal to a traditional hip hop/R&B crowd. I remember when this record came out back in 2011. I was so tired of how generic R&B had been at that point (Chris Brown, Usher, etc.) But then Frank Ocean and The Weeknd brought something new to the game.
I honestly love these experiences you present to us, Mr M! It genuinely takes me back to my reaction and the little bits you pick up on in terms of production elevates your reactions from the rest.
I love when you break off into tangents and the main point of the video isnt even there for like 10 minutes. Its honestly like im in person just jammin out with you. Theres nothing better than throwing on some music and seeing where it takes you.. love your channel my man much love from new york!
@@mercurialno6 you're on your way there! you're unique which means you're incomparable. XO fans (the weekend fans) loves to watch reaction videos and they will be with you not only in your journey to the weeknd's discography, but also to witness your success!
Glad you noticed the trip hop influences in early Weeknd songs, he even samples Portishead on his album Kissland, which you should definitely get round to listening to - it has a very cinematic production if that makes sense
When I was in high school I use to always say this sounds like something that would be on massive attack’s mezzanine or Portish head . Man I miss when The Weeknd was working w/ doc McKinney. That’s when he was at his best . Ive been listening to his first 3 tapes for 10 years straight and it doesn’t get old , kissland also .
Never been a huge Weeknd fan but I do remember listening to this back in the day and vibing to it - and this just reminded me of how much better his earlier stuff was.
genuinely get so excited for a reaction everytime you put one out! love that you're covering the weeknd and can't wait to see you add your musical touch to the rest of his projects
keep up the fantastic work my man! the genuine happiness you get from listening to all diff types of music brings me joy, and I learn quite a bit from you as I am so out of touch with musical instruments/sounds, etc. so thanks for all the knowledge you drop along the way too!
Nah , he should do Thursday & eos , kissland too . His first 3 tapes & kissland is his best work . Maybe I’m just biased torwards those projects because I was 16 when they dropped and I would listen to it EVERY DAY for like 3 years lol and to this day 10 years later i still do , the new stuff just doesn’t hit the same . Bring doc McKinney back !!
Mercurial there is no one like you! You make me enjoy music so much and I thank you for it! P.S please check out Kanye and Travis Scott’s best friend Kid Cudi and his album “Man on the Moon”!!!
You should definitely put together a compilation of your covers. I remember your Runaway by Kanye cover being something I’d prefer over the original. That guitar in House of Balloons was fantastic. Keep up the great work!
Great experience Mercurial as always! Thank you for your work. When are we going to get a tour of your collection these days! We’d love to hear your favorite pressings and Crown Jewels of the collection.

When you started playing guitar to house of balloons completely improvised i was blown away . I can’t lie
Adding that guitar with the bass on Glass tables girls was too fire 🔥
The original mixes just have a special place in my heart as they are the original versions which were polished in trilogy a year later.
It's just come to me! The song I was trying to think of!!! The Asphalt World by Suede. Never mind... better late than never! Ha ha!
