This album holds a special place in my heart (as it does with many others) released just before we went into lockdown for the first time, with Abel creating an immersive experience through the world of After Hours acting as pure escapism from reality at the time. It's arguably his best body of work.
Couldn't agree more. It came out at the right time. Especially when spurs were playing so poorly or not playing at all and this album was one of the few things I found solace in.
Crazy thing is his label urged him to not drop it amid the Coronavirus craze as music sales began declining, but he went against their wishes to stick to his word for the fans and was awarded with his most successful album yet!
Also, as for other albums by the Weeknd, Starboy and Beauty Behind the Madness are okay. Enormous hits on them. But Kiss Land is the one I'd love to see you react to. Atmosphere and sounds unlike anything else. A gem that never got the attention it deserved.
The new camera/camera angles are making the videos feel like full productions and are certainly separating you from the rest of the generic low effort reactors out there, keep it up 🙏 would love it you reacted to some Outkast maybe? Aquemini would be amazing
After Hours was the first Album I ever Listen from The Weeknd, and godamn. I've been a fan for Months now, listened to his whole discography and never turned back. He already has an album ready to be released just couple months from now and I'm hyped. Quick Sidenote, The Delux Version has extra 3 Songs! Nothing Compares, I miss You and Final Lullaby. which are one of my favourites From him.
this album released just before we went into lockdown and i was also going through a break up of a 2 year long relationship, this album helped me get through all of that and it will always have a special place in my heart
TIMESTAMPS (8:34) - Alone Again (12:40) - Too Late (16:39) - Hardest To Love (20:10) - Scared To Live (24:43) - Snowchild (28:48) - Escape From LA (34:40) - Heartless (37:56) - Faith
After Hours was to me the top album of 2020 and it wasn't even close. Yet, this album got zero Grammy nominations, which was a snub not just to The Weeknd, but every producer and engineer who absolutely killed it on this album. The production is pristine and The Weeknd always delivers with some of the best vocals in the industry. I love that you caught some of his more sci-fi references like Philip K. Dick and how you brought up Vangelis a lot. I believe The Weeknd is quite the sci-fi geek himself as he has a big attachment to synthesizers and the 80s sound. Faith is my favorite track off the album, and it's the perfect ender for your first reaction video here. The atmospheric ending with him singing over police sirens is the closest he's been to that really dark melancholic RnB Weeknd from his Trilogy era ever since he took on the new futuristic pop-driven Starboy persona. Faith is the perfect track in combining both his new and his old into one.
Hey man, I’m a 22 year old Dominican American dude in the south who works with kids all day and I absolutely love your videos. This one in particular brought so much comfort and relaxation. Thank you so much for your content, sir. I’m giving a description of myself so you can know it’s a real person with a real life getting a lot out of your content (just in case you need reassurance that your content is important to people) oh and I really like your new podcast
I am SO looking forward to you listening to the second half! After Hours (the song) is my favorite song on this album. I hope you are as blown away as I was. I also cant wait to see you do more Weeknd. I have a feeling you will really enjoy Kissland.
If you are looking for a desolate horror movie in an album form then 'Kissaland' (my personal favourite from him) will definitely be a great reaction video let alone experience. The songs are generally longer and much more layered as well, lyrically it has his best work bar 'After hours' I'd say.... Also man, your insight into the different sounds and rythms makes these videos infinitely more enjoyable! Loving your uploads a lot. Looking forward to many more!!
One of my favorite Music RUclipsrs, ive been following since the Bandana video and watching the growth of the channel and seeing your journey across the genres has been a privilege, cant wait till 100k!
I loved your unique reaction and take to this record! Notice how before the second half of Escape From LA starts (32:00) you can hear a phone ringing before he starts singing about his girl in the studio, and also just before the outro of Faith (41:15) you can hear an siren before he starts singing about ending up "in the back of a flashing car"! The production on this album is phenomenal and it's amazing to see you do it justice.
The thing people need to understand about you mr.mercurial is that ur ability with a range of genres is you can dissect an album and deconstruct it picking the bits that people with a mind full of music can only picture and that’s why you are a musical genius
You're in top form here #6. Really appreciate the immense effort you put into the listening and editing. You seemed to genuinely enjoy this one a lot too. Looking forward to part 2 :)
Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) had a great deal in producing the sounds on this album. He has a super varied sound across many electronic genres and composed the score for Uncut Gems more recently. Check out his work! Its amazing. Great reaction as always, can't wait for part 2.
Fantastic album, can’t wait for the rest of the reaction. Also The album description is a bit outdated so it doesn’t mention Save Your Tears as being one of the singles, but you’ll likely recognize it. Massive hit this year
Excited for part two, you are always phenomenal Mr. Mercurial. Please more Weeknd, no matter which direction you decide to go, although I will say Kiss Land is definitely his thriller album and Echoes of Silence has a, dare i say, better version of Dirty Diana.
i love this! by any chance can you listen to mac miller’s Faces?! it is an old project of his that recently just came out on all streaming platforms as well as on vinyl! i really do recommend it is a nice listen as well as a nice way to get into mac since i noticed that you haven’t covered him yet!
I guess the closes comparison to Thriller would be Beauty Behind the Madness, I'm sure plenty of music journalists probably called it 'The Weeknd's Thriller album.'
Really? I’d say it would be Starboy. That was his huge pop album. The biggest song from the album, the title track ‘starboy’ is comparable to thriller (song) for obvious reasons, ‘I feel it coming’ as the big r&b song (billie Jean), and maybe ‘false alarm’ as the equivalent of ‘beat it’ as the fast paced, high energy banger.
You have the greatest reaction channel. Keep up with this, I'm sure many people feel the way I do. Please consider reacting to Death Grips, I think they would match with your chaotic style and energy. You might also like that this band prefers to be listened without reading the lyrics :)

this album defines my lockdown escapism to a tee.

His best to date.
Musically standing side by side with trilogy & kissland.

Mentioned Vangelis a few times here, Kissland is heavily inspired by Vangelis Blade runner OST
YEEEES , trilogy and kiss land his best albums
YES, BBTM and Starboy have tremendous highlights but are very inconsistent as albums. He was really in his bag on After Hours
Kissland is literally his worst album

I just love how this album is massively influenced by UK sounds.
A lot of 2 Step, Jungle and DnB in that album and I LOVE IT !
Hardest To Love drums instantly reminded me of Chase & Status - End Credit
The Weeknd Is top 3 of our generation deny it all you can but it will go down that way.

This album sounds like what the people of the past thought the future would be like, and I love it.
Blade runner & 1984 vibes for sure. Phillip K Dick
After this album, you should do 808s and heartbreak by kanye. Such an amazing project
Or Graduation
This album shows that super mainstream pop can be truly artistic too
His is because he started as an alt god , so he brings bits and pieces over to his pop stuff .
I love how cinematic this album is. Deserves its own movie.
Been waiting for this one. After Hours (title track) was my most played song in 2020 by a substantial distance
BEST IN THE GAME! The Weeknd is also very good.
