Yo! When Abel says “meet my boys” initially I also thought like, yeah, his homies, human beings. But the more I listen I think his “boys” are his various drugs. I could imagine him saying “meet my boys” and sticks out his hand with a baggie, some pills, and a joint. The way he says “if you get too high come over and ride it out” makes me feel like they’re actually alone, she’s not in a room full of his homies getting passed around. Also, I discovered The Weeknd about a week after Echoes dropped so I was able to binge listen all 3 mixtapes and I listened to some kind of Weeknd song every.single.day.for.YEARSSSS. All 3 also rotate as my favorite, sometimes it’s HOB, sometimes Thursday, sometimes EOS, different songs grow on you and just hit different at different times. Hope you listen to the extra 3 songs on Trilogy (one bonus song per mixtape) and then Kissland next!
D.D. is a Michael Jackson cover of Dirty Diana from MJ's Bad album i believe. Montreal is his shout out to the city that he has the most inspiration of Trilogy. And yes, theres no Brazilian talk in there lol. Outside is one of my favorite tracks from Abel ever. XO/The Host is him basically him introducing the girl to his lifestyle and his inner thoughts of taking advantage of her morals or lack thereof and siphoning the energy from her like a vampire or parasite. She's his Host. He and his boys, be them actual members of his crew or drugs used to strip her down is up to you to decide. Initiation is basically or initially thought to be a train ran on ol girl, while she's under the influence. Same Ol Song is him saying the girl he's actually genuinely interested in is for the streets and missed out on him but she's just a typical rat. The Fall is him saying hes going all in on his goals and he's not afraid of it not working out because he's come from nothing and isnt afraid of going back to it because he knows how to survive. Why does everyone think the ending bars in echos of silence are Abel pov. He clearly says “and you replied... I like the thrill” and he switches notes to a higher note to reflex that that’s the reply from her to his question to why does she keep coming back if she knows it’s not going to end well. And Thursday did not kill her self she attempted to OD these mixtapes are about a weekend out partying and it’s ups and downs. The girls he talks about in echos are strippers and girls that want him know bc of his fame. As before they wanted him for the drugs or bc they were drugged out. And these are the unfiltered thoughts of a man or boy bc he was only 16-20 making this shit. Which is crazy in itself L. My take on Initiation is he and this girl have left a party and went to his loft to continue the party. I feel like there's people there from his crew (XO) and Drake's. My opinion is the initiation is doing a bunch of different drugs hence the the mention of different substances and alcohol because he says "shut the door before you take your f***ing clothes off baby". He wants her to be wasted with him and have sex all night. His "boys" are the drugs and alcohol. He refers to his guy friends as his "ninjas" (for obvious reasons I'm not repeating the word he used out of respect) not his "boys." These lyrics in particular are what made me reach my conclusion : Work that back til I tire out, roll that weed, put the fire out Taste that lean when you kiss my mouth, get so wet when I eat you out and if you get too high baby come over here and ride it out. There's no mention of him "sharing" her. As far as The Weeknd goes he's a character and his lyrics are loosely based on his life with some exaggeration. He's an awesome storyteller! The overall theme of kiss land is basically the same character the weeknd as he is, but in a new different/strange environment, The Weeknd has never left Toronto before and with his newly discovered fame, it has taken to him to another part of the world (Japan) , one not like his own world, this place is what is kiss land. So it's this same character but in kiss land or japan. When united,3 song got added,twentyeight for hob,valerie for thursday and till dawn (here comes the sun) for eos. I think you missed the first and last one i mentioned,which means you understand less off the mixtapes. i advise you listen to them! Montreal is actually in french btw,seeing he is from canada which speaks english AND french... not spanish hahaha (eos). The mixtapes were all released in 2011,in chronological order which i represent as different pov's and situations. For example durint the host i feel it is th girl the weeknd's talking to's pov, and the fall the weeknd's pov(my opinion) also, i think hob is him trying to lure the girl in, thursday is her falling for him, in the end leaving/dying and eos his reflections and inner self, hia fear of being alone. Many XO's say it's his best work. He takes you through leaving Canada for the first time (at 21 years old) and the tour life he's experienced up to this point. It's more grand and his vocals are insane! As usual his lyrics are exceptional. Go into it with an open mind, I think you'll enjoy it.
