Worst Roller Coaster Accident At Cedar Point

- 2015 was the year for one of the worst and most preventable accidents at Cedar Point. Where a guest was hit by a roller coaster after hopping a fence. The ride in question was Raptor, the park invert since 1994. An attraction with an impeccable safety record. Yet, caused one man's death all because he wanted to retrieve his cell phone.

I was working at CP that day. From my understanding, him and his whole group were intoxicated. They had asked an employee and he was told that they had to wait until the end of the night and get it at lost and found. He did not want to wait.
I wouldn't want to wait either, what if someone else grabs my phone during the day.
@@SirGriefALot they wouldn’t stop the whole entire ride just to grab someone’s phone, which they tell people to not bring their phone on the ride due to things like this. he could have just waited instead of setting himself up to die
@@SirGriefALot who the hell is gonna see and wanna grab a phone in that fenced off off limits area dummy!
@@SirGriefALot no ones gonna go into the restricted area to retrieve the phone
@@SirGriefALot Look... you could have eyed the phone from behind the fence, and watching until closing. Assuming you cared that much about the phone, and needed to guarantee nobody else grabbed it. Entering something that dangerous... is insanity.
Also worth noting that in Cedar Point’s 150+ year history, this is the ONLY death in the park NOT attributed to natural causes
Well… that’s a little lucky considering what happened with Shoot the Rapids and also the fact that the lady from the dragster incident may be as good as dead given her brain injury…
@@Mygary what were those 2 incidents? Just curious, as I grew up in Sandusky and cedar point was a 2nd home as a kid. I always felt very safe there.
@@daddyfuse50ook up the top thrill dragster incident. A bolt or something came from the ride and hit a lady in the back of the head. I dont know the full story tho, El toro ryan has a video on it
@@Mygary The fact that you consider someone dead because they're mentally impaired is disgusting.
@@Mygary Also, only 1 person was hospitalized in the shoot the rapids incident.
Stupidity. Two fences. He had to jump TWO fences. The short decorative fence that separates the grass from the midway, and then the really high low zone fence with signs that say "keep out or die"
The signs should say: “RESTRICTED AREA. KEEP OUT OR DIE!”
@@jordonfreeman166 They basically do. I don't remember the exact verbiage, it's been a while since I worked on raptor.
@@jordonfreeman166 it should be common sense lol
“This area is RESTRICTED. Stay out unless you wanna lose your head”
Some people truly have a mental breakdown if they lose access to their smartphone, and it’s kinda socially accepted. Scary
I've never lost an item on a ride personally, but when my mom lost her watch on Dragster the park staff retrieved it and shipped it to our house a few days later. Like you said, you just gotta let park staff know and they'll help you.
Weird question, but how’d she lose her watch on dragster? Did the band break or something?
@@therealkhretz I wondered the same thing when it happened. From what I remember, the clasp broke from holding onto the lap bar, maybe vibrations.
My moms watch came off randomly at church and it was cause the clasp broke
A lady lost her phone on magnum the last week of august. They told her to leave her name address and description of the phone and they’d ship it to her.
A similar situation happened at Six Flags Magic Mountain with Ninja in 2008 with 20-year-old Carlos Ibanez attempting to grab his hat by climbing security fences. He was struck by the train shortly after despite people pleading for him to stop. He, unfortunately, but not surprisingly, was pronounced dead the next day. I really don't understand why people can't just wait until the end of the day to ask employees to grab it for them.
It was batman not ninja wasn't it??
@@stuartmax147allen3 I'm pretty sure it was at the Batman at Over Georgia.
@@jonahperegoy4672 yeah
For everyone replying to this comment, that was a completely different situation that just happened to occur in 2008 as well. Weird how 2008 had two of these accidents happen
Yea so pretty sure that’s incorrect. There isn’t really any way to get under ninja by jumping a fence, and the type of car it uses would make it unlikely for someone to drop their hat. There haven’t been any instances like these at Magic Mountain. I believe it actually took place at Batman in Georgia.
I'm really glad the front row was empty. can you imagine being in the front, seeing him and there's not one damn thing you can do about it? not only would you have broken legs but you would need therapy for a very long time to straighten your mind out
I really agree that woulb be terrible if there were people in the front row
And the drunk would have shattered your leg as well.
call me heartless but if i broke my legs i'd sue the family i wouldn't lose sleep either if someones so dumb they'd risk others lives for a broken phone maybe we don't need them
@@shakeyhandsshedmodelrailwa2494 Based
You likely wouldn’t have half of your leg anymore. At least that’s what’s happened in other cases. The unlucky rider doesn’t go home with a cast and wait it out, they go to the ER with a missing part of their leg or the bones fully cracked out of the skin with just flesh holding it together. The chances of walking again are slim, and the chance your life will ever be the same are absolutely 0%. Because someone else did something so stupid.
I feel really bad for the riders on the ride. Thankfully the front row was empty, but if it wasn’t somebody else could have been injured.
I was just on it yesterday (and in the front car), your feet really dangle on that ride, but I'm pretty sure even in the front car they are shielded by the fuselage.
Really weird coincidence, but I was at cedar point with my family the day that this accident happened. My dad's name is also James Young. And he was the same age as the guy who was killed. So my dad gets a call from his mom, who is really freaked out and like "oh thank God you're ok, I was watching the news and they said a 45 year old guy names James Young was killed at Cedar Point today". Really freaky.
Edit: His boss also called him, and I remember my dad saying that he was almost offended that people would think he was stupid enough to run under the tracks to pick up a cell phone lol
damn wtf
James Young is such a generic name and many people go to Cedar Point every day.
@@jasonnelson9141the 45 years old part though
You can replace a phone, or a hat or anything else, but you can’t replace a life.
Omg I think I saw that quote crochet on a pillow in my great grandmother’s house, because that’s how ancient that type of constructed quote is! 😅
But you technically can literally replace anything or anyone, there are literal replacement mothers and father called “step parents” for when a man or woman would… REPLACE… their former spouse… what you can never have back are past memories and experiences
it seems like you hear a lot of similar stories from suspended coasters only. seems like there's an assumption that as long as youre standing under the track, like a classic top of the track coaster, you're safe from being struck, not considering what an invert even is. but fact is entering into the restricted area of any coaster is dangerous
A similar incident happened on Batman The Ride at Six Flags Over Georgia in 2008, but it was much more gruesome. A teenage boy (who was probably about 16 or 17 years old) attempted to retrieve his hat he had lost on the ride.
Not only was he hit by the train, he ended up getting beheaded by it. Yes, BEHEADED! I don’t know if it was just as bad as James A. Young, or even worse. Probably the ladder.
Either way, moral of the story: DON’T WANDER AROUND IN RESTRICTED AREAS OF ROLLER COASTERS!!! Especially ones that are suspended above the track like this one!
A hat? This guy risked his life for a HAT? Wtf is wrong with people, What’s next risking your life over a bracelet or some shit?
Yes, Mr Young was decapitated by the Raptor train.
Wasn’t there also a little girl sitting in the seat that hit him and her whole leg got shattered? Or is that a different story I’m not sure
I can't help but notice that you spelled "latter" as "ladder" It's just funny.
I know this was almost a year ago, but you're thinking of a different accident, albeit one that occurred at the exact same ride as the 2008 incident. This one happened in 2002, and it was actually a groundskeeper who got struck by the train.
I hate when people are so bias to their own family members that they will defend their stupidity. It is not immoral to cut off your family if they are a problem.
So if your family member died even while being reckless and intoxicated, you would not go to the funeral?
Even though this doesn't warrant a family member disowning him, I agree that families don't always need to defend each other and can cut them loose if needed.
It's been way too long, glad to see another upload

@@timothywait9457 why tho
I can honestly see 90% or more of the gp trying to retrieve their own phone from wherever no matter the risk. God forbid IG or FB waits unfortunately now.
I blame these $1,000 phones. They cost a small fortune and folks feel like they gotta get the "hottest new item" I doubt he would have been that pressed if it was a cheaper model. My cousin worked there and said he kept quoting the model of the phone and how much it costs ...smh
Y'all sound like old people. Blaming the phone and not the idiot who jumped the fence lol
Fanny packs are my new favorite thing! They keep everything secure and fit easily and on your lap and don’t affect the restraints!
We been using those since the 90's when we used 2 go 2 Geauga Lake Amusement Park
The avarage weight of an B&M train is a ton per cart long train (so a nine cart train weighs 9 tonnes)
Not to mention the perceived weight based on the speed of the train.
A classic case of natural selection
Excellent analysis. well done!
Cedar Fair would save so much frustration if they just had free locker bins for every coaster, and didn't try to price gouge guests.
That is in no way justifying this situation. But it keeps idiots from losing phones and doing stupid things (usually harassing staff).
Fr like do they expect me to pay for a locker I will only use once? Busch gardens also needs to take note!
Actually, the majority of idiots taking phones on rides are doing it so they can take videos. They wouldn’t even use a free locker if available.
Dude you can store your stuff in the steel vengeance lockers for a significant period of time even after you get off the ride
free lockers dont stop guests from being stupid. i work at an attraction that has free lockers bc our ride is not suited for loose articles, and people still get pissed, scream at me, refuse to use them, and ultimately lose their items. like every other group wants to fight abt their stupid loose articles.
Definitely, paying for lockers sucks. Thankfully I’ve never had to worry about my phone because either my mom doesn’t ride the coaster and she keeps it in her purse or I can put my phone in one of those cubby things in the queue.
What made it worse is raptor has bins for loose articles.
You are so right. No one should jump fences. Especially a teacher.
It was a stupid decision, stupid decisions have consequences. People saying that they would go in and wouldn’t want to wait, they wouldn’t stop the whole entire ride just to grab someone’s phone, which they tell people to not bring their phone on the ride due to things like this. he could have just waited instead of setting himself up to die. Your life is more important than a phone, listen to park rules and stop bringing your phones on just for a video instead of enjoying it in the moment!!
I bet the phone was broken too. Back in 2015, if your phone fell out of your pocket while walking, they got cracked to hell.
I’m not that attached to my phone.
Never bring any loose articles onto a roller coaster. Empty your pockets, put everything in your bag and put it in the baggage area before you get on. Use a locker where possible if you've got valuable items, or at least keep them out of sight.
If you lose anything on a ride, ask a member of staff to retrieve it.
Exactly, it only costs a little bit of money to put your stuff in a locker, which is not worth more than your life or someone else’s life. People just don’t understand!!
@@cassidy7661 At Thorpe Park, there are three roller coasters (The Swarm, Saw: The Ride and Colossus) that have warnings about loose articles featuring displays of items presumably lost on the rides.

This thought occurred to me when i bought my ticket, i ended up getting a pair of shorts with pockets that all zip or button.
Your back! Know if you will make a video on the possible Seaworld Parks & Ent./Cedar Fair buyout?

No buyout. F Sea World.
I want to remind you he jumped NOT 1 but 2 different fences to get his HAT, DONT BE THIS GUY
Huh makes sense now. I remember it being down for most of the summer that year and every employee I asked was like no comment
I was there either on the day or 1-2 days after the incident. I was feeling very light headed and dizzy that day so roller coasters weren’t on my mind, but I did notice a lot of activity around Raptor. If I was there on the incident day, I’m pretty glad I was so lightheaded and didn’t go on the ride.
Lol cool story bro
I was there that day. I was in the park but I didn’t know that happened untill I got home. It was insane
ALCOHOL, that's his problem. Dead now.
Love how you put in the “broken cellphone box” from Untamed (a hybrid coaster!) in Walibi Holland 😂 “Let op” means “Watch out” :) #Dutchlessonoftheday
I lost a phone on the jojo roll of Hydra at Dorney. I said screw it and left it. They called my mom and got my address from her and it arrived at my house a week later.
Well as always my heart goes go out to the family and I am truly sorry that Mr Young had to die but he was old enough to know better not to go jumping over fences into restricted areas. I know, he probably thought he could grab his phone quickly and get out of the way. But from the looks of the area, it looked like it was tight and there was really no place to get out of the way. But still he had to have heard the train coming. I hate to be contemptuous but this is a very stupid way to die.
I rode raptor a day before that incident
7:01 I actually thought you were gonna say yes! XD
And Raptor is lower than one might think. It comes out of nowhere from the midcourse back into the infield to the station. I did a video back then that shows the area in slow motion.

He went under the coaster that hangs under the track, which has free bins to put your stuff, in one of the worst possible spots on the entire ride, after jumping 2 fences. It's all on him
I remember going on an inverted ride and the safety thing kept hitting my head
My thing is, how can he not time it right? Like how were him (and the kid from Six Flags Over Georgia) not able to clearly see the ride coming and just wait till it goes by. No one talks about that, but like how stupid can someone be?
My thoughts exactly, shouldn't be going into restricted areas in the first place but you should be able to see the train coming or at least hear it approaching with the screams of its passengers.
I was looking for someone to comment about this idea. I agree, if you absolutely have to go into that area, yes, look and listen, and also, to add to this, stay flat on the ground or use a stick or something to retrieve the phone? But ideally, don't enter the restricted area. I read in some other comments, that he was intoxicated, no excuse for his actions, but may shed some light on why he did what he did.
@@porkysparodies Oh yeah I believe I read that too. That would definitely shed light on why he pulled such a stupid move without using his head first.

I have visited twice (2015, 2018) and I remember this being some big deal especially with next years coaster being named valravn, glad they kept the name but it was in jeopardy if I am remembering correctly

Fanny packs made a comeback because of your video. Well done.
Same exact thing happened to a boy and a grounds keeper on the inverted Batman rollercoaster at a different park. Put up new signs that say, "DO NOT ENTER UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR HEAD KICKED OFF."
This summer, as my daughter and I were in the entrance line at Cedar Pt, I saw something hit the pavement about 10ft in front of me. A girl picked it up… dropped cellphone from one of the Gatekeeper early-entry riders. So lucky it didn’t strike anyone; and there were a lot of people in the area where it came down. Some asshat didn’t secure their phone; and there are free bins at Gatekeeper to put your stuff in! smh
Same thing happened for me but it was on TTD which is 420 ft if you didn't know if that struck someone that would've been terrible.
