No Orcas are NOT vicious. They never attack humans in the wild. In captivity? They will at one point because those mini puddles are NO way to keep them. It is tge equivalent of living in Harry Potters closet.
I was there for the Rhode Island incident, when the acrobats hanging by their hair fell. Took my little sister and we had front row seats. I remember the audience had no idea what happened at first. Next, it's time for the horrors of amusement parks! I have had my face smashed in a waterslide, bruised my entire right side of the torso on a spinning ride, nearly been thrown out of a ride, and watch several people get injured in a simulator...
I really thought I was going to fly off a waterslide at a turn. I'm too fat so I guess I built up too much momentum. I love amusement parks but I won't go until I lose the weight.
The group high wire fall is a classic example of experience causing safety complacency. A less experienced tightrope walker would request a safety net because they aren’t very confident in what they are doing and are more afraid of the danger, while the experienced tightrope walker has done it so many times that they think they couldn’t possibly make a mistake.
inclined to think the same for the hair hanging.if they're an established group doing their own rigging they're probably a little lax on how often they switch out their carabiners, i.e. 'oh yeah, that's pushing the 10% wear threshold but we're probably fine' and nobody bothering to disagree. Also they're professionals and it's a fixed, indoor attachment point, they really have no excuse to be using aluminum over steel.
The Chinese say "It is the strong swimmer who most often drowns." It is because the strong swimmer overestimates his abilities and underestimates the strength of the river.
In the Ken Peters incident, they cite his survival to the fact that he was an experienced free diver, so every time he came up he was able to breathe efficiently and keep his heart rate down throughout the entire situation (she dragged him down far more than two times, to the bottom of the tank, for longer each dive.) Petes got out because he coincidentally had unrelated hobbies. Terrifying.
@@LubnaSiddiqNot only did he make it, but he became a fierce advocate for orcas after his time as a trainer. In the documentary, Blackfish, he explains that the majority of orca trainers have very, very little experience if at all before they’re slapped onto an orca. He turned out to be a pretty amazing dude
I love how Mike didn't blame anyone for doing those stunts or taking risks, but did get upset when they carried away the volunteer. The reaction to the accident does matter so much for him, and indeed outcomes depend on that reaction
I’m so glad you covered both shamu and kastka. Seaworld are the problem. The last straw of trainers being in the water was dawn. Orcas are so extremely intelligent and the fact that they are treated like this are disgusting. there are videos of them smashing their heads into the wall. Truly disturbing and sad to see them suffering in captivity.
The fact that we have all been made complicit in the abuse of orcas and dolphins as children. We were brainwashed in to thinking imprisoning and exploiting these animals was ok.

@@lyd4610 They are definetly the problem, but since I already wrote a comment answering why I'll just paste it here, though somehow I get the feeling you won't read it all With the Orcas there's a couple things people need to understand. There's three types of animals that do not do well in captivity: those whose lives consist of migrating large distances constantly, those who are highly intelligent, and those who are highly sociable...Orcas are one of few species who are all three alongside elephants. The second thing is that places like SeaWorld are NOT conservation projects, they are NOT rehabilitation centers, they are NOT breeding centers either, however they ARE amusement parks which means their main motication is making money and that means skimping on adequate enclosures, enrichment and food for the animals and also skimping on having actual cientists watching over the animals and instead having underprepared students/regular people with lackluster training in charge of highly intelligent animals, which leads to abuse and a lot of stress put on them...which then leads to the animals going mad and snapping seemingly "out of nowhere" and when a highly intelligent species snaps it is never pretty
Well I didn’t watch most of this. I was mostly covering my mouth and eyes at the sight of the injuries. I am now convinced that the circus is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world edit: I meant to put mouth and eyes, but stupid auto correction and there was no need for correction on it
yeah, a lot of people don't realize how dangerous it is - so many professionals, so much practice and skill, and yet these accidents can still happen. I have so much respect for those people.
Acrobatics and stunt work can be extremely dangerous. I remember Cirque du Soleil changing their rules on safety lines and netting after a fatality and numerous injuries.
I was front row at a cirque de sole when the two men on lines were swinging out wider each time and on one epic round the guy slammed right into the metal tower that they use to climb up to the trapeze. My heart was just oh no. Medics ran over, he eventually stoop up and gave a thumbs up that he was ok. THEN GOT BACK UP ON THE LINE TO FINISH.
My doctor used to work at Sea World with the orcas. He comes out on the Black Fish documentary, Dr. Robert Ventre is his name. Every time I have an appointment with him I ask him to tell me stories about SeaWorld
I'm always grateful when a circus performer uses a safety harness or net as a backup in case of a fall. Barnum and Bailey circus came through recently and they had nets underneath the trapeze performers and they don't use animals anymore. Having safety in place doesn't make the act any less difficult or impressive. It should always be a priority when possible.
I went to see the recently. I was happy to see the safety equipment, but rather sad about no animals. Some animals do seem to enjoy performing tricks (dogs and horses).
Nets are mandatory for trapeze above certain highs nowadays the also have a side wire with a person holding it trained to do so or just to the side of the trapeze depending on the act.
Yep! I saw Ringling barnum and bailey twice when they last came through, and my first thought on the highwire incident was "where's the safety net?" And the motorcycle ball was not diminished by not having freaking firecrackers on the bikes. This was their last run using animals, but fun fact: their elephants are all now living at a sanctuary started years ago by the circus.
That last one was horrible, why the hell did they pick him up! You see someone lying there like that and not being consious or not responding well, you call 911! This made it so much worse!
My guess is ironically in hopes of avoiding a lawsuit. They needed to get that guy out of there to whatever quack doctor they might’ve had backstage. So some rep could come out and say he was fine. That they grabbed him to carry him out without even checking on his condition or calling 911 screams that show is a traveling tent full of all kinds of violations.
Hope you feel better. I had a back injury and it never went 100% normal again, even after 12 years. I get very bad pain if I vacuum or do laundry from bending and lifting. Physical Therapy is hard but you get better long-term results.
I’m sure these are just the cases that miraculously weren’t fatal. I’m 100% certain the list of deaths attributed to circuses is as long as a freight train.
yea pretty sure they chose non-lethal ones to make it more palatable to a wider audience. try searching for FATAL circus accidents if you prefer that kind of video.
They are likely also mentally and physically prepared for the worst whenever they are doing the dangerous stuff. After doing it for so long they had to have had other (though maybe less severe) accidents and their bodies probably instinctively react in ways that keep them safer- hold your breath and relax your body if an animal is dragging you underwater, tuck your chin to your chest if you’re falling backwards to try to prevent concussion, etc.
It looked like an attempted assisted backflip for the last clip, but both the flipper and the assistant didn't know what they were doing. You barely need to do any lifting as the assistant, you just guide their legs over your shoulder, but the flipper splayed out, making his legs go over the guys face, and the guy didn't know to just move out of the way once the flipper's head was out from under to not be injured. Following that with a terrible carry was just a perfect video of what not to do.
Thank you! I was looking for a comment about the last clip. Most of them are just about the orcas or personal experience. It was very chaotic and uncomfortable to look at... I wasn't even sure who was supposed to lift whom🤷♀ Sth like that shouldn't be allowed with an audience member without any safety ropes and/or those 5cm high mats you use in gym class at school... They're not soft, but at least cushion the fall a little better than the hard ground.
Dunno what was attempted but that guy literally broke a very major law for the circus actors(well used to have laws nowadays dunno),whatever the case you don't do things like that wth volunteers.
Not just the terrible carry, but the lifting to seating right after the flip because of the possibility of a neck injury. Unless the whole thing of him being ‘knocked’ out was an act. But if not, the whole thing was really bad.
There was a tv show that used be to aired on TV called Scarred. It covered injuries from extreme sports like skateboarding, rollerblading, bmx, etc. I’d love to see your reaction to those injuries.
4:47 Speaking of the strength of hair, they tested it on Mythbusters, they were testing alledged prison escapes, Kari made a rope out of hair and was successfully able to use it to climb down the side of a 3 story building. Just FYI, the other two: Grant used bed sheets and succeeded, Tori used toilet paper, his ripped and broke when he got to about a foot off the ground but he landed on his feet and it wasn't that high so they said "close enough". 9:00 That sort of looks like a professional wrestling move called the Spanish Fly, in that move, they hook up facing in opposite directions, and simulatenously flip, one doing a forward roll, the other doing a backflip, difficult to pull off and very dangerous. The killer whale incidents are very controversial, there's a documentary film called Blackfish that talks about the effects being in captivity has on orcas, There was one in particular that attacked several other orcas and killed 3 trainers. SeaWorld in particular has taken a lot of criticism for it and has been losing millions for years due to the backlash. They were talking about ending the orca program and shows at their parks, but seems like they've flip flopped on that. Several states have banned having orcas in captivity now though.
That was Tilikum. He was present with some other orcas in the first fatality, then had some stoned weirdo sneak into his tank at night in the second incident (who wouldn’t react poorly to a stoned stranger sneaking into their bedroom at night), and then the last happened during a show and really brought the issue of orca shows to public attention m. He was one messed up orca. He’d been captured from the wild, so he knew what he was missing.
I always appreciate when Dr. Mike addresses that people may need emotional therapy after serious injuries to go with the physical therapy. Especially in situations like these where the patient is definitely going to put themselves back into a position where they could injure themselves again.
7:31 people keep animals in CAPTIVITY and just expect they won't feel hurt, tortured and act out being aggressive and violent. There are NO cases of this type of whales/dolphins actually killing humans when they're on their natural habitat. We are NOT part of their diet. But if you are out in the ocean and you see a few of these whales gathering together it probably means there are BIG SHARKS around (which is their primary source of food) and generally they hunt sharks that actually present deadly risk for humans. Don't be afraid of the whales, look around for sharks and try to swim away as fast yet calmly as possible.

I agree. But its fascinating that there is no documented attack of wild living orcas or dolphins. Only those held in captivity attack humans. I wonder why 🤦♀️
@@Lisa_Harlow There are quite a few documentaries on RUclips that explain it, one that gets mentioned quite often is blackfish. If I had to explain it I would say: Imagine you're on a covid isolation with your partner. Normally you're probably both at work or not something but in Isolation you can't go to work you're basically captive in a very small bubble with at least on person that intrudes on that space. Both of you would go crazy and be angry and everyone and everything. Imagine you're a Orca, the biggest killing machine in the wide wide ocean, then you got kidnapped stuffed into a small pond with little to no outlet for your energy, your drive. But then a human comes and wants to do tricks with you. The rest is written in history. Those orcas are severely different than their freely living comrades. They get abused, beaten, starved, dumbed down of course they would act like they do.

what i want to point out is that the guy driving the motor bike in 5:49 that didn't catch fire managed to stay calm throughout this situation. It would have been so easy for him to freak out, lose control of the bike, and land on the other guy. credit to him
Most circus actors when going for their acts esp. extream ones have multiple plans for worst case scenarios going through their head, they tend to expect the worst and some of the first training you get is psychological, used to be ppl got filtered from the circus for not being able to keep calm in stressful scenarios.
Watching Doctor Mike, as he knows which part of the body was injured in an accident amazes, impressed me. It's amazing how much he knows, even though he hasn't just learned them. Also, I think you learn a lot of things in med school, it's amazing to me that Mike only recognizes them by sight (and what could have been damaged). I want to be like that, that's all there is to know, maybe I'm going to med school. Thanks Doctor Mike! Also that you put on subtitles, so I can learn English, too, and I can write a comment like this. Keep it up! ❤️❤️❤️
7:30 YES! Doctor Mike you have a lot of influence….you could do something about raising awareness about not supporting shows that make wild animals do performative shows. Let wild animals stay wild. If we have captive wild animals don’t use them for entertainment by riding them or making them do uncomfortable tricks. Show how they can learn with positive reinforcement to do things they might naturally do in the wild without having to ride them. Make their habitat as similar as possible to what they live in in the wild. Things like that. Some animals are injured and can’t survive in the wild so can’t be released, but that doesn’t mean we need to force unnatural things, like a person riding on or swimming with them
Love how it goes from "he hit his head" to "DECAPITATION!", haha. Would love to have Doctor Mike as a consultant while making a particularly violent video game.
I used to work in the circus and our human canon also missed his net. He landed on the ring boxes. He definitely had a broken arm and I think a broken leg but no major injuries. Still scary though!

Here are a list of symptoms. • Headaches. • sore throat. • runny nose. • the shakes. • feeling too warm or cold. • overly sweating. • stuffed nose (sometimes) (edit: I also do get fatigued, that's about as normal as it can be with the cold or flu.)
Holy C.... great video Dr. MIKE but I had a serious goosebumps on my arms all the way . Big respect for all of them making us entertain but still so scary. 😮 Happy and "no injuries " Sunday Everyone. ❤
That last act was sooo negligible, you could tell the poor guy regretted it as soon as he volunteered and god knows what the other guy was going to do to him? 😮
Exactly and why would he need someone to help him do a simple backflip. The proper way to spot is not to hang on to someone but a trainer holds there arm out and as one jumps up and back the momentum carries them. If one has trouble with the carry through of the legs then the spotter will assist in pushing them over quickly and react if they notice something, in fact belts with ropes are used for the young with one person on each side until eventually like training wheels they are let loose.
@@BrianMurfitt it’s true. But once one learns them then it becomes like riding a bike but this is definitely not how I would want to learn either, but hey, maybe their beer was good idk.

8:56 the person in red pants is just supposed to get lifted and flipped over the other dude's shoulder. His hands were placed improperly. They're supposed to grab the hips so that the hips immediately begin rotating around the shoulder. You're right, that is unforgivable. Especially because this stunt is a basic swing dancing move.
in high school, our english teacher showed us _blackfish_ (2013), a documentary on the effects of seaworld's orca shows, and it makes the clips at 6:49 and 7:34 much more harrowing. it should be common sense that an animal in captivity would lash out at everyone in its limited environment to try and get out of it and back into the wild.

Hi Mike. You should read the latest studies regarding C-Spine collars - they're very soon to be taken out of pre-hospital practice in the UK as there is growing evidence that more damage is caused by fitting them. We're using less invasive methods, orthopaedic stretcher and head blocks, to prevent further injury. And back boards are so out of date they're known to cause significant harm through sores and pressure in the wrong places. I know you're a family medicine Doctor, but you might find this interesting.

Poor Shamu, I don't understand why orcas are still kept in captivity to this day. Only animals I can think of that actually live shorter lives in captivity than in the wild and that alone is reason enough to ban the practice of keeping orcas in aquariums. I love zoos and support keeping most species in captivity if done correctly but I hate SeaWorld or any zoos who cares more about profits than the well being of animals.
Doctor Mike, re: the reason we have fear installed into our brains - I would love to see you react to Nat Geo’s “Free Solo” documentary from 2018, about Alex Honnold! The documentary said Alex’s amygdala is underactive, which is why he seems to have no fear in free soloing (rock climbing without ropes/safety) gigantic mountain walls. The amount of emotional neglect Alex experienced, growing up, really makes his lack of emotion (let alone ability to name his emotions) make sense. Also his having had to learn how to hug people.
Hi Dr Mike! I think it would be cool if you did a book review on "When The Body Says No" by A Canadian doctor named Gabor Maté. It has a very interesting message that is valuable for people to hear but it also seems like, in my limited medical knowledge, there are some misleading statements. It would be interesting to have his claims compared with the literature.
I usually am an advocate for responible and ethical captive programs for many animals, but large mammals especially aquatic ones are just not in that category. Sad to see for sure. Even large land mammals can at least have natural reserves, and its worth noting that it takes those massive reserves for similar sized land mammals and asshats like SeaWorld dont even attempt something remotely similar aquatically for the orcas and porpoises. Gives responsible captive breeding programs, zoos, and research programs or even unrelated responsible private keeping of other animals (like small reptiles or fish) a bad name.
The orcas are like villains. Akaza lost his wife, Shigaraki accidentally k!lled his family, and Mapleshade lost her kits. And they all became villains. Broken. Orcas attacked the people, after being trapped. Misunderstood.

Only being able to read the minds of hypothetical people must be annoying.
Terrifying.
I would say free diving is a very much related hobby, otherwise yeah that definitely saved him

It's almost as if the orca was just fighting its own instincts to pull the guy down
His having confidence in the water and having trained his body to be under for long periods absolutely saved his life.

I am now convinced that the circus is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world
edit: I meant to put mouth and eyes, but stupid auto correction and there was no need for correction on it
I mean well uh
yeah, a lot of people don't realize how dangerous it is - so many professionals, so much practice and skill, and yet these accidents can still happen. I have so much respect for those people.
Less impressive and safer than lumberjack, mining, oil rigging, farming and construction.
@@chrishughes3405being a circus performer is less impressive that those jobs? What?
@@kazu9445 I suspect they're one of those people who don't see entertainment as "real job".

A good show will keep your eyes above the net, anyway. Plus, some of those nets are practically invisible when the lighting is done right.

It will never cease to astound me on both how delicate the human body is, and, conversely, how durable it is.

As a professional circus artist currently out with a back injury… this video was amazingly painful to watch lol
I hope you’re on the mend soon!
Are you with CdS?
Get well soon buddy!
Hope you feel better. I had a back injury and it never went 100% normal again, even after 12 years. I get very bad pain if I vacuum or do laundry from bending and lifting. Physical Therapy is hard but you get better long-term results.
Hope you're mending up well, ouch! May I ask what epic thing you were doing that caused you to get injured?
Man the fact that most circus professionals survived the injury is surprising to me
I’m sure these are just the cases that miraculously weren’t fatal.
It may seem like a goofy job, but we really got to give those people respect for what they have to go through
You don’t get to that level without experiencing more than a few falls, so you’d quickly learn how to minimise the damage when possible… or quit.
I wasn't even sure who was supposed to lift whom🤷♀
Sth like that shouldn't be allowed with an audience member without any safety ropes and/or those 5cm high mats you use in gym class at school...
Oh my god such a good idea
The FMX rider at 6:15 actually got his start in my hometown. We all were devastated to see his accident and glad that he made it out okay!
The Mythbusters thing is so cool! thanks for sharing!

Imagine you're on a covid isolation with your partner.

The amount of emotional neglect Alex experienced, growing up, really makes his lack of emotion (let alone ability to name his emotions) make sense. Also his having had to learn how to hug people.

@DoctorMike
We need you to be like a sportscaster for injuries. You are so good at this.
9:00 okay, dont ever particiapte if they want YOU to do the act. Ive gone to a circus before, and they did involve the crowd here and there. The most interactive someone got, was to do a roll on a drum and then hit the crash symbol for a trick. Doing stuff where you ask a random guy to flip you around is so dangerous
