Cheers Scott, yeah it's pretty big since we built this new spray section, about 60ft in total I think
Brilliant mate that is excellent 👌
Thank you!
Thats A real Nice booth, i need such A place
Thank you, I really needed it, my old booth was a run down old shed. Cant do without it now!
Nice job mate.
Looking good.
Have a great 2020
Thank you patrick, same to you too.
Next vid, next Monday 😁👍
Nice one chaps, great workshop 👍👍👍 Glad to see you're back and look forward to more videos 😎
Thanks very much Nick, it's always nice to get comments like this.
Yes, hoping to get a video out every Monday.
Cheers 👍😁
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop You're welcome 👍
Hi Ryan. What did you use for the fan filters? Couldn’t see them in the description.
Great setup guys. I only wish I had the room for a dedicated spray area... Keep up the good work.
Thank you Mark,
Much appreciated!
I guess its all about how much space you have spare to build something .
Our next video is this Monday and its all about using the sprayers so stay tuned if you can :-)
Thanks you Ryan
Do you ever use any solvent based paints with the airless? What paint would you recommend for colours on mdf?
I do very rarely.
You do get a slightly flatter finish with solvent based but the drying times between coats is a few days. Airless puts it on a lot thicker than roller or brush and ive found that the first coat can take up to a week to fully cure before I spin a component over or key up ready for 2nd coat.
I always use johnstones and they mix any colour any sheen.
I mainly use a water based johnstones eggshell
Great video chaps , lovely big workshop is it in your garden?
Thanks maty, no not in the garden just on a little plot 😁
Hi there , you did a fab job on your spray booth looks great
Thank you, there is a video going live tomorrow morning (Sunday ) to do with the spray booth 👍👍
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop nice one buddy. Look forward to it 👍
Its on now mate, EP#35 👍
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop cheers 🍻 👍
Great booth! What size CFM are those fans ? And are they each vented separately or is that back section hollow ? And the whole back of booth gets vented ?
Thanks, I think I have links in the description for the fans and info will be there. They are both just vented separately into the outside 👍
Hello quick question regarding the fans do they both need a speed control or will one run both the fans ??
Love your channel 👍👍👍👍👍
Hi, thank you!
These fans have a separate speed controller for each fan so if you buy 2 fans you'll have 2 controllers.
Thanks and glad you like the channel👍👍
Hello,
Love your videos, great job!
The fans should be a problem for you. Think you cool everything down in just a few minutes when you send the air right out. I've been thinking of building a recirculating system. Would be cool if you made a video about it because it shouldn't be that advanced.
Hi, Do you get dust specs settling on the stuff you paint when it's drying in the open?
Not really mate, if I was spraying with hvlp with pu paint or a really shiny paint then perhaps you may notice a spec or 2 but now with the eggshells and house hold paints I spray.
With those powerful fans, do find that the paint/finish gets sucked out of the room before it hits the work piece - - especially when using an air sprayer?
Hi no not at all with my setup. I use airless sprayers and they spray out quite heavy compared to other hvlp type guns 👍
Hiya workshop looks great. what size is the spray shop side?
Thank you!!
I think the sprayroom is 8x5m off the top of my head 👍
Thanks for all the content. Massive help. Where did you get the floor grid from?
From ebay I think, its just that grid to put on grass, soil to let the grass drow through then you can walk on it
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop Thanks a lot Ryan
Your welcome 👍
Looking great, good job with that.
Quick question. I have used acrylic primer on my mdf (sprayed on) and the first coat raises fibers on the flat part of the mdf so i sand it down and do another coat but it then raises more fibres. Its a pain in the arse and cant get a perfect finish. You think this is due to the mdf being from B&Q and being cheap and nasty? Thanks in advance
Thanks Craig and I like your question.
I've battled with this problem for a long time and tried lots of methods to get over it.
Firstly I sometimes notice that some MDF boards have more large yellow softwood particles in them. These are the bits that raise.
I've also noticed that some boards raise more than others.
What you said is probably half of the problem, buying low grade MDF. I've heard that medite is a good brand of MDF but only places like Lathams probably sell it, most other places probably sell cheap boards.
-Try and use MR mdf, this is alot more dense and its moisture resistant so the grain shouldn't raise as much
-The first coat needs to dry asap or the moisture in the paint will raise the grain.
2 ways I use to reduce the grain rising is literally spray a dust coat on first, very fine and just enough to cover the MDF just about but little enough to dry within 5 mins or so.
Second heat the panels you are spraying.
I have a space heater and I use it in 2 ways.
Once all my materials are in a pile in the spray room I point the space heater at them to heat them.
The other way is once I've sprayed the dust coat it needs to have the heater on it asap.
Down side with dust coat is that you will need to apply 3 coats per face ( I guess it depends on your sprayers you are using).
Does that help?
Thanks Ryan
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop Star man. Thanks for the advice. Am glad I am not the only one who suffers with this. I will probably invest in the MR board on my next project. Will also give the fine mist coat and the heating trick a go and will report back to you with the outcome. Much appreciated. Great channel, learning a lot from your videos so thank you 👍
Your welcome, and thanks.
Yes let me know how it all goes and if there are improvements.
I dont think you will get it like glass but will be interesting to know.
Thanks 👍
Use oil base
Great looking spray room completely different from the places we visit and view in the joinery sector normally very small or very production line feel - particularly like the bespoke made holding racks! Don't hesitate to ask if you need any spray, sanding or spray booth components and if you haven't already check out our training video on the correct type of filters for spray booths you need to ensure best practise filtration in spray booths www.ultrimaxstore.com/blog/how-often-should-you-change-spray-booth-filters/?
Hi,
Thank you for the nice comments :-)
I definetly will keep you in mind (and vise versa I hope for more of our videos )
Thank you Ryan
that would be great really liked your booth design - was that even a coffee machine in there ! - when you need to cover your timber structure ready for spraying we can even supply the peelable gramos coatings so you start with a nice white coating too www.ultrimaxstore.com/gramos-aquapeel-ultra-peelable-coating-a4618-c-27-p-42387110
Where did you get the fans from are they recirculating what are the blower outside
Hi Norman,
Thanks for the questions.
The fans were bought from Amazon, they are 400mm diameter with a controller ( Each one will come with their own controller )
Here is a link:
amzn.to/2N2ICu1
There will also be a link put in the description.
Im not recirculating the air (if that's the question), im just sucking in air from a few vents in the walls, and leaving a door/window open.
Any other questions and where to get other stuff just ask.
Thanks Ryan
Love the paint set up where did you buy all the materials for the racks trying to set up a room like it and I really like the set up you have it’s very well done
Thanks Joe, I've finally got the workshop and spray room to how I want it.
The question about the racks is actually an up coming video I had planned very soon, but as you asked I'll let you know.
The mobile racks are made from scrap timber, mainly scaffold boards ripped down the middle and also cls timber.
The wheels are lockable and swivel 50mm castor wheels.
The poles actually came from a 3m x 3m cheap £18 gazebo I bought from Ebay or Amazon.
These gazebos supply you with enough poles to make one complete mobile rack as you see in the videos. It's far cheaper to buy the poles like this.
Cheers Ryan
The London Craftsman thanks Ryan I have taken a lot of the ideas you use and applied them to my shed very happy with it. Love the videos
Thanks Joe, appreciate the nice comments.
I'll keep making them.
At the moment I have a few vids of heating water with solar panels and also a coil, but I'll get back into the woodwork vids asap
Hi where did you buy your fans from bud. Thanks
Hi a link should be in the video description 👍
I noticed your fan are not atex rated?? explosive!!
I spray water based latex, don't need them
Adding the foam onto the shelf’s doesn’t it allow you to flip pieces quicker without damaging the finish?
Hi Joe, the foam is great to protect the newly painted face (once its cured and flipped over)
The London Craftsman cool stuff just waiting to flip some pieces there now. Thanks for all the advice it’s a great help
hi there
fantastic job with the spray room the sliding doors are a great idea to keep the the two spaces seperate and clean if you don't mind me saying the fisheye on the video spoils the
viewing of the video it really distorts the imagess as otherwise i love your videos
happy new year
Thank you Simon for the great feedback, it really does help.
I will 100% keep the fish eye in mind.
We have already made another 2-3 videos so the videos after that will be a smaller lens angle.
Thanks Ryan 👍😁😁
hi ryan
i look forward to seeing them as i used to be selfe mployed in the fitted furniture trade and i really enjoy these type of videos
i had to give up my job due to chronic disc disease and arthritis on my discs
so i would advise any one in the furniture trade to look after their back as
when it gives trouble it is very painful in fact im in pain every day
i know that now there is so much better information on health and safety
and looking after one self than when i started almost 30 years ago
i lookk forward to seeing your work
regards
james
Hi mate, did you ever make a video about the construction and materials for your drying racks @ 1:02 thanks Gaz
Hi Gary, ive been meaning to make this video for ages! I've had the materials and poles since I made this video.
I probably won't get a chance to make it for a bit.
I buy a cheap £15 3mx3m gazebo from amazon for all the poles, use scrap timber for the frame and £5 for some castor wheels too, again off amazon. I'll try and make this video ASAP 😁
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop Hi mate, have finally decided to knock up a spray booth for my workshop. Can you advise on the fan sizes your using, been looking at open fronted booths and sealed booths, but feel your design would suffice for my purpose. Checked out some of the filters I need and going to be ordering a roll, same size as you mentioned in the video. So for good air flow, do you need that door open? Also using only water-based paints the fans surely don't need to be Atex rated do they? I have read that as long as your not using flammable paints, like solvents, then industrial extraction fans are safe.
Hi !
Are the links for the fans in my description? If not let me know as that link will take you to the ones I bought.
I only use waterbased too so these fans are fine, no need for expensive fans.
Yes, they suck in tons of air so definitely need a door open and maybe a window too depending on the speed you have it on 👍
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop Yeah, located the link! Thanks again, much appreciated. So you purchased the 16", they are powerful, got a 4900 m3/h and you have two. I know they are on a controller, what's your setting? surely not full wack. Thanks again.
Hi, no I have them on low to medium most of the time. I just have 2 to cover more area👍
Where are your fans extracting too?
Hi,
I have a filter at the front and at the back of the fans and they are extracting into an unused space/land.
I only use water based and oil based paints through this booth, so no smelly solvent based paints.
I’m on a mission this year to make work easier, more profitable and more enjoyable, looks like your doing the same
That's good to hear maty, yeah its definitely helped having this new addition.
Good luck with it, and if you have any questions it will be nice to hear back from you.
Thanks Ryan
Afternoon. I have read that Lacquer is the way forward with Kitchens due to quality and also drying time. Whats your thoughts or what are the complications with it
Hi Darren sorry this message slipped through the net.
I guess it depends what lacquer you are going for, water based, AC, PU , etc.
I dont really have the set up for hvlp using AC, pre cat, or PU so if I'm applying lacquer it would be water based using my airless Sprayers.
I use morrells brand which seems to be ok, but that's the only info I can give you on this subject.
Sorry 😁
can u tell me why ur extractors are low level im setting up my own small spray booth and head is pickled with dos and donts
Hi, my theory behind the fans being low down is that when spraying the over spray will generally fall to the floor, rather than above the work.
It also allow the over spray to dry and turn to dust before it hits the filters and fans.
That's my thinking behind it 😁
.thinking along the same lines myself.
smaller workshop smaller paint booth but have been making it work .place looks sweat lad .keep up da good work
Thanks Johnathan
Some of auto booth use the downward flow, that way dry overspray is not picked up then set on new wet work.
Where do you vent out to?
Just to an open space behind the building
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop Out of curiosity, doesn't what also vent out all warm air or do you just heat it as you go?
